Joe Biden's Afghanistan Drone Strike Against ISIS-K Is a Joke, and We Are the Punchline

Two days ago, a suicide bomber attacked a security checkpoint at the Hamid Karzai International Airport (HKIA) in Kabul, Afghanistan. That airport is the main point of egress for any seeking to leave that sad simulacrum of a country, before US forces comply with the August 31 withdrawal deadline set for them by the Taliban.

Re-read that last sentence a couple of times to grasp the scope of our national shame. Thirteen Americans were killed: eleven Marines, one Navy corpsman, and one Army special forces soldier. Twenty more Americans were sufficiently wounded to require medical evacuation. One of the dead was USMC Sergeant Nicole Gee, who appeared in these widely circulated photos:

Cut down to its basics; the US carried out a drone strike on an alleged ISIS-K planner…whatever that means…located in Nangarhar province. At its nearest point, Nangarhar is about 30 miles from HKIA. As it is unlikely this “planner” was minutely paralleling the province boundary, odds are he was in or near one of the handful of towns in that province.

For retaliation to be effective, it has to have three elements. It must be timely, visible, and it must be at least proportionate (my bias is towards disproportionate).

This exercise fails on at least two counts. Following up an attack that was an international story that took out 33 of your troops with an out-of-the-way attack that maybe killed one person does not say, “don’t do this again.” Rather it is a signal that you are weak, and it is open season on your people with no bag limit and no size restrictions.

As my colleague Bonchie points out (see Color Me Extremely Skeptical About Joe Biden’s Retaliation Strike Against ISIS), this is eerily reminiscent of Bill Clinton’s retaliatory attack for al-Qaeda truck bomb attacks on our embassies in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and Nairobi, Kenya, that took over 200 lives. That attack was on a Sudanese aspirin factory and managed to kill a night watchman. The flaccid response to the East African bombings was one of the factors that convinced Osama bin Laden that he could attack US targets with relative impunity.

Beyond the fact that we have no way of knowing that a strike was carried out or who, if anyone, was targeted or killed, there is a bigger problem with the story. Sorry, but there is nothing the Biden White House has earned but skepticism.

I’m not sure very many sane people believe ISIS-K was able to stage a suicide bombing plot in Kabul and waltz a bomber through one or more Taliban checkpoints without the acquiescence, if not outright assistance, from the Taliban. This attack allowed the Taliban to draw blood and plausibly blame another entity. The US has to go along with the fiction because if it doesn’t, then the chaos in Kabul turns into a very ugly scene involving a fighting withdrawal by the US and allied forces at HKIA.

Bottom line, this attack was bullsh**. It had nothing to do with deterring further attacks and everything to do with domestic public relations. It shows just how weak our hand is in Kabul and highlights the grotesque ineptitude of the Biden White House.

I'm more of a central leaning republican... There are several 'liberal' beliefs that I agree with but still tend to be a little more conservative... I did not want Trump as president in 2016... didn't vote for him in the primary.... but did vote for him in the presidential election... I tolerated him but have been praying that both side (republican and Democrat) can start finding better candidates than the ones we've somehow produced the last couple of years...

I also think we need term limits for congress.....

U.S. airstrike takes out ISIS-K vehicle packed with explosives in Kabul

Washington — The U.S. conducted an airstrike against an ISIS-K vehicle laden with explosives near the airport in Kabul on Sunday, U.S. defense officials said, the second such strike against the militant group since a deadly attack against U.S. forces last week.

Captain Bill Urban, a Central Command spokesman, said in a statement that the strike was carried out by a drone and eliminated "an imminent ISIS-K threat" to Hamid Karzai International Airport. Urban said the U.S. is confident the strike hit the target, and initial reports indicated there were no civilian casualties.

Urban said that "significant secondary explosions from the vehicle indicated the presence of a substantial amount of explosive material."

Bilal Karimi, a senior aid to the Taliban's spokesman, said the airstrike hit the vehicle near the airport. He said three suspected individuals were in the vehicle at the time of the strike. Karimi said the U.S military had told the Taliban that a vehicle full of explosives would arrive in Kabul and that the U.S. would destroy it.

Last week's attack on the Abbey Gate at the Kabul airport left at least 170 dead, including 13 U.S. service members. U.S. officials have said a member of ISIS-K carried out the bombing, and vowed to retaliate against those responsible.

A U.S. airstrike on Friday, the first since the attack, killed two "high-profile" ISIS-K planners and facilitators and wounded another, according to Pentagon officials.

Sunday morning's strike came after the State Department issued an alert warning people not to come to the airport because of a "specific, credible threat."

The operations against ISIS-K militants come as the U.S. rushes to evacuate Americans and Afghan allies from the city ahead of President Biden's withdrawal deadline of August 31. The White House said the U.S. facilitated the evacuation of 2,900 people from the capital over a 24-hour period beginning Saturday morning, and have helped 114,000 people leave since August 14.

Jake Sullivan, the White House national security adviser, told "Face the Nation" on Sunday that the U.S. would continue to go after the ISIS-K militants who orchestrated the attack at the airport.

"[The president] he also is going to talk to his commanders about whatever set of tools and capabilities they need to get the people who attacked and killed our troops at the Kabul airport and to make sure that we are degrading and debilitating the group, ISIS-K, that conducted this attack," Sullivan said. "So, yes, we will continue to take the kinds of over-the-horizon strikes like we did over the weekend against the ISIS-K facilitators and plotters. And, yes, we will consider other operations to go after these guys, to get them and to take them off the battlefield."

Mr. Biden vowed to retaliate against those who facilitated Thursday's deadly attack.

"We will not forgive. We will not forget. We will hunt you down, and make you pay," he said in remarks at the White House shortly after the blast.

Pentagon spokesman John Kirby told reporters on Saturday that there were active threats against the airport, which were "still very real" and "dynamic."

In a press briefing last week, General Frank McKenzie, the head of U.S. Central Command, said the U.S. was closely monitoring the threat of a vehicular suicide bomb in a small car or a large truck.
