https://thehill.com/homenews/admini...administration-sought-to-undermine-covid

The Trump administration deliberately undermined the nation's coronavirus response for political purposes, including by weakening testing guidance and championing widespread "herd immunity," according to a new report from the House panel investigating the pandemic response.

The Democratic staff report released Friday was a summation of the year's work investigating political interference in the pandemic response from Trump officials and the former president himself.

In interviews with officials and from uncovered emails and other documents, the committee found that the former administration failed to heed warnings about supply shortages, blocked public health officials from speaking publicly and neglected the pandemic response in order to focus on the 2020 presidential election and on promoting the lie that the election was "stolen" from Trump through widespread fraud.

New evidence released by the panel Friday highlighted the frustration and anger among senior public health officials with Trump's embrace of the herd immunity strategy.

In one instance, Trump held a roundtable event at the White House in August 2020 with some of herd immunity's top proponents that was organized by Scott Atlas, a radiologist who became a special adviser to Trump.

According to emails obtained by the panel, former White House coronavirus response coordinator Deborah Birx described it as “a fringe group."

"I can't be part of this with these people who believe in herd immunity," Birx wrote in an email to then-Chief of Staff to the Vice President Marc Short. "These are people who believe that all the curves are predetermined and mitigation is irrelevant -- they are a fringe group without grounding in epidemics, public health or on the ground common sense experience. I am happy to go out of town or whatever gives the WH cover," she wrote.

Other details released by the panel Friday showed the Trump White House intentionally “softened” the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's public health guidance for faith communities.

Jay Butler, the deputy director for infectious diseases, told the panel in an interview he was pressured by the White House to publish guidance for faith communities that “softened some very important public health recommendations,” such as removing all references to face coverings, a suggestion to suspend choirs, and language related to virtual services.

Butler said he felt the guidance "was not good public health practice" and would put people's lives at risk

"I was doing a lot of soul searching about whether or not I should have agreed to even make the change in the document. Clearly, it was a directive, but that was a real struggle as I felt like what had been done was not good public health practice," he told the committee.

Former Biden COVID-19 adviser: 'Viral blizzard' about to hit the US

A former COVID-19 adviser for President Biden's transition on Thursday warned of a “viral blizzard” that is about to hit the U.S. as COVID-19 cases rise and concerns about the omicron variant continue to fester.

Michael Osterholm, who served on Biden’s coronavirus advisory team during the transition, said in an appearance on CNN that the health care system could be overwhelmed as omicron becomes more prevalent in the U.S.

"I think we're really just about to experience a viral blizzard," Osterholm told CNN's Erin Burnett. "I think in the next three to eight weeks, we're going to see millions of Americans are going to be infected with this virus, and that will be overlaid on top of delta, and we're not yet sure exactly how that's going to work out."

"What you have here right now is a potential perfect storm," Osterholm said. "I've been very concerned about the fact that we could easily see a quarter or a third of our health care workers quickly becoming cases themselves."

Omicron was discovered near the end of November in South Africa and, despite quick action from the U.S. to ban travel from areas where the variant was prevalent, the new strain has been found in dozens of states.

Early studies of the virus show it is more transmissible than the previous delta variant, but possibly less severe.

Infectious diseases expert Anthony Fauci said omicron will soon be “dominant” among COVID-19 cases in the country.

Omicron "will assume a dominant role very soon, I would imagine within a period of a few weeks to as we go into January," Fauci said recently.

"Besides the toll of suffering and death which will inevitably go up if in fact we have that convergence in the winter months of flu and omicron and delta, we could get our hospital systems overwhelmed," Fauci added.

Omicron more likely to reinfect than delta, no milder: study
By Clara-Laeila Laudette (Reuters)

Researchers found a significantly increased risk of developing a symptomatic omicron case compared to delta

The risk of reinfection with the omicron coronavirus variant is more than five times higher, and it has shown no sign of being milder than delta, a study showed, as cases soar across Europe and threaten year-end festivities.

The results of the study by Imperial College London were based on UK Health Security Agency and National Health Service data on people who tested positive for COVID-19 in a PCR test in England between Nov. 29 and Dec. 11.

"We find no evidence (for both risk of hospitalization attendance and symptom status) of omicron having different severity from delta," the study said. Although it added that data on hospitalizations remains very limited.

"Controlling for vaccine status, age, sex, ethnicity, asymptomatic status, region and specimen date, omicron was associated with a 5.4-fold higher risk of reinfection compared with delta," the study, which was dated Dec. 16, added.

The protection afforded by past infection against reinfection with omicron may be as low as 19%, Imperial College (ICL) said in a statement, noting that the study had not yet been peer reviewed.

The researchers found a significantly increased risk of developing a symptomatic omicron case compared to delta for those who were two or more weeks past their second vaccine dose, and two or more weeks past their booster dose.

The study involved AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccines.

Depending on the estimates used for vaccine effectiveness against symptomatic infection from the delta variant, this translates into vaccine effectiveness of between 0% and 20% after two doses, and between 55% and 80% after a booster dose.

"This study provides further evidence of the very substantial extent to which omicron can evade prior immunity given by both infection or vaccination," study lead Professor Neil Ferguson said in ICL's statement.

"This level of immune evasion means that omicron poses a major, imminent threat to public health."

But Dr Clive Dix, former Chair of the UK Vaccine Taskforce, said it was important not to over-interpret the data.

"The conclusions made are based on making assumptions about omicron where we still don't have sufficient data," Dr Dix said. "For example, we have no data on the cellular immune response which is now probably driving effectiveness of vaccines."

"This is a crucial missing assumption in the modeling."

Some of the conclusions are different from the data emerging from South Africa, where vaccines are holding up well against severe disease and death at present, he said.

"There is a huge amount of uncertainty in these modeled estimates, and we can only be confident about the impact of boosters against omicron when we have another month of real-world data on hospitalization ICU numbers and deaths," he said.

An earlier study by Britain's SIREN looking at reinfection risk in health workers, which was carried out before omicron emerged, found that a first coronavirus infection offered 85% protection from a second for the following six months.

The data analyzed by Imperial College was based on 333,000 cases, including 122,062 of delta and 1,846 which were confirmed as the omicron coronavirus variant through genome sequencing.

Imperial College's Professor Azra Ghani, who co-led the study, described it as "essential for modeling the likely future trajectory of the omicron wave and the potential impact of vaccination and other public health interventions."

The new findings could accelerate the imposition of tighter restrictions across a number of European countries in a bid to stem the new variant's spread.

yea looks like its easier to get infected BUT it doesnt affect the lungs anywhere near as much, so more in line with a very severe flu. still a problem, but it looks like the virus is finally mutating to a lesser version of covid.

knowing that, its a bit odd how the economy got overly spooked about Omicron.

Florida man using thong as mask in protest kicked off United Airlines flight

A Florida man was kicked off a United Airlines flight Wednesday after attempting to fly with a red thong on his face in place of a mask.

Adam Jenne told NBC affiliate WBBH that he's pulled the panties stunt on several flights in an effort to make a statement.

“I think the best way to illustrate absurdity is with absurdity,” he said. "Every single flight has been met with different reactions from the flight crew."

The United flight crew was not amused. Jenne was removed from the flight.

"The customer clearly wasn’t in compliance with the federal mask mandate and we appreciate that our team addressed the issue on the ground prior to takeoff, avoiding any potential disruptions on the air," said a statement from United shared with NBC News.

The TSA requires travelers to wear masks at airports, on planes, buses and trains. The mandate has been extended through at least March of next year.

Jenne refuses to comply. "I don't wear the mask in the airport at all, at all." He later compared his law-breaking to the bravery of civil rights icon Rosa Parks.

The Federal Aviation Administration has been grappling with a spike in unruly behavior on planes all year.

In a typical year, the FAA sees 100 to 150 formal cases of bad passenger behavior. Since January, the FAA has recorded more than 5,660 unruly passenger reports. More than 4,070 of them were mask related.

Actually the article 40 posted said there were no signs it is less severe than that Delta variant. But we have seen other reports as well that indicate otherwise. I think it's a little too early in the game to draw any conclusive determination one way or the other at this time.

Some of us are just better prepared for it than others.

One of the oddest things I think there is about all of this is that many of those same preppers that have invested in underground bunkers, huge weapons stashes, ammo stashes, and food storage..... all in preparation for the end of the world, are many of the same people who refuse to get a covid vaccine which are 90% of all those dying of covid. I guess they've made a choice which gambles they wish to take of dying and of what they wish to gamble dying of. Obviously it's not the actual risk of dying they're concerned with.

You talking about those Preppers who didn't have to run out for toilet paper and groceries when all this began?
Unlike you, they weren't and still aren't running around risking Covid.
They are stocked up on meds and every other thing they need.
Their kids are home schooled and safe too.

But by all means, feel superior to them as you roll them dice.

Irony certainly isn't your strong suit. You see, to some degree I'm a prepper myself. Some of the very things I listed describe me. Guns, ammo, food are all things I keep well stocked.

The difference is that I also have been vaccinated and got the booster shot. Because I'm not going to sit here on one hand and say I try to do everything to protect myself and my family and then ignore getting vaccines that give myself and my family a 90% better chance to not die of Covid.

Try to keep up next time.

There's actually one much bigger silver lining, hopefully.

If this strain is not nearly as deadly, and many are asymptomatic, this helps the march towards "herd" without the mass casualties we've seen throughout this pandemic.

Many scientists, at the beginning, said that we would need a strong "menu mix" of vaccinated (once the vaccine were to come out) and previously infected to ever get to a point of herd immunity. A lot of that talk was squashed once the vaccine was ready and politics and science intertwined, but the ideal makes perfect sense.

Maybe omicron is a blessing in disguise (although I hate to use that term) in the long term?

That's because the Chinese population in America aren't enough nor have they shown the propensity to create consequences for their actions. In this case that's different.

“Fully Vaccinated” and “Boostered” Pocahontas Has Symptomatic Covid-19
By J.D. Rucker • Dec. 19, 2021

If you thought Elon Musk was the only thing on Senator Elizabeth Warren’s mind, she now has something else to keep her busy.

JUST IN – Democrat Senator Warren has breakthrough #COVID19, experiencing mild symptoms.

— Disclose.tv (@disclosetv) December 19, 2021

Despite her “rare” breakthrough case betraying the narratives that the “vaccines” and booster shots will protect you, she took to Twitter to use her condition as an opportunity to push more vaccines and booster shots.

“I regularly test for COVID & while I tested negative earlier this week, today I tested positive with a breakthrough case. Thankfully, I am only experiencing mild symptoms & am grateful for the protection provided against serious illness that comes from being vaccinated & boosted,” the Massachusetts Democrat tweeted. “As cases increase across the country, I urge everyone who has not already done so to get the vaccine and the booster as soon as possible – together, we can save lives.”

As cases increase across the country, I urge everyone who has not already done so to get the vaccine and the booster as soon as possible – together, we can save lives. https://t.co/lyVapoCE3A

— Elizabeth Warren (@SenWarren) December 19, 2021

Let’s pray that Elizabeth Warren and the multitudes of breakthrough cases are able to recover. But let’s not dismiss the fact that being fully vaccinated and fully (for now) boostered does nothing to prevent symptomatic Covid-19 from striking.

The narrative? The narrative says 10% of Covid deaths are among the vaccinated. 90% are not vaccinated. Try again Weedhopper.

We now have 21 friends who are vaccinated and have covid. They got it from people who were also vaccinated.
*everyone has taken home tests and tested positive and have the symptoms.

1. no one knows who self report that they have covid. (the number of people who have covid are probably significantly higher than reality)
2. half of them thought they couldn't get covid or give it to someone because they are vaccinated.

if you have covid, don't go out and spread it around. stay home. it's not hard.

If you are vaccinated, you can still get and give covid.

How many of them are in the ICU or have died from it? No matter how many times it gets explained to you, you either don't get it or don't want to get it.

the fact that you cannot or refuse to comprehend that you can still get or give covid is mind-numbing.

the number is around 10%
--- who cares how many are in the ICU. if a hospital worker gets covid... they have to quarantine for 10 days. which reduces the overall staff
