Yeah, im under 30 for that matter and own every Jay-Z cd. While for Monsters tastes, Elvis may not have made anything better than Jay-Z, to state it the way he stated it is just wrong.
I personaly would much rather listen to Jay-Z, but thats just me, obviously many, many people would much rather listen to Elvis.
I hate when people try to argue that one artist is better than another, everyone has different tastes.

Elvis was way more style than substance. That's not a bad thing, but at the end of the day it was his hair and his hips and his lips that got him where he was...that's not to say that the Beatles fresh faces and moptops didn't help them, but there was more to their later years than that...Elvis was just good music, but not deep music or complex music...he's a Justin Timberlake sort of figure, but he's become so much more mythic because of the society he was introduced to.
Jay-Z? Elvis? Apples and oranges.

JMO, to put Elvis and Jay-z in the same sentence is almost laughable.
Man, I just don't get it all of this at all. This is coming from someone who is only twenty years old, Why does this current generation favor rap and R&B more than Rock?
Jeeze, I guess it's a growing trend or something, I have no idea. Some people jsut don't know what good music is anymore, it's quite sad.

As far a music, like what some have said above. Every one has different taste. Not better, not worse, just different. So "good" music is purely subjective.

Ive had my martin for 10 yrs, no complainst at all from me, my dad shoots a martin warthog that is probably 30 yrs old +
i picked up an older horton hunter elite crossbow for a 100 bucks, THat thing is dead on, a little loud, but dead on
i thin my martin is heavier then the norton
as far as the matthews adrenaline, my friend purchased it right before deer season in michigan
his quote "its the best bow i ever shot"
heard the matthews and the diamonds are absolutely amazing and fast

It's totally subjective. I'm 29 years old, and was born and raised in the suburbs. I love a variety of music, and own cd's that range from Pachebel to Billy Joel to Electric Light Orchestra to Clay Walker to George Strait to Cindy Lauper to Prince to NWA to Ice Cube. - You get the point. I own one Elvis CD, and I bought it for the song "Suspicious Minds." I own over 20 cd's released by various Rap artists. Different people like different stuff.
I agree with the notion that the quality of music today isn't what it used to be. Personally, I think 1970's R&B/Soul Music is the greatest music ever made.-Great voices, real instruments, great rythm, great lyrics, and sometimes, a political message.-see "Ball of Confusion" by the Temptations, or "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" by the Temptations, or if it's great rythm you seek, listen to "The Rubberband Man" by the Spinners. -Incredible music. Anyway, back to the point, popular music of today is not, absolutely not, as deep, or as pure, as music pre-1980. The use of instruments today is scarce, and when instruments are used, they are often electronic. Songs are often resampled versions of old songs, -see Puff Daddy.
I have nothing against Jay Z. I feel that TylerD titled this thread "Jay-Z on par with Elvis" to spark the debate that is at hand. Jay Z's sales figures are great, but, they are not comprehensively compared those of Elvis Presley. There were fewer people, and fewer sources of media, in the country when Elvis ascended to popularity. Also, the change that Elvis inspired to the mainstream North American political, and social, landscape, is rivaled only by the changed brought upon by the Beatles. No other musician/band, has ever reached, or come close to reaching, the degree of influence that Elvis, and the Beatles, attained.

And you would be wrong here. I know plenty of kids that I'll assume are of your generation (since I don't know how old you are). And they all know and appreciate Elvis. Just because you don't, don't assume everyone else in your age bracket feels the same way.
Elvis' influence on American culture is frankly too large to ever just be forgotten. Without Elvis, there wouldn't be a Jay-Z and so on and so forth.

First off....You need to understand music in it's self.
this is like trying to compare apple's to orange's.
Dif. era dif. type of genre.
My self ...I believe rap and music and or singing is not in the same class, again jmo....but you can not compare the two. ie....it is like saying Hank Williamns and Static -X ,is in one the same. Not so! Two totally different types of entertainment....Yes I said entertainment! Because that is what it is !.....They are both entertainer's and both relate to different people.

Today in school, I dare you to ask any kid walking down the Hall if they know who Elvis is? If you find 1 in 10 that doesn't I'd be amazed.
The "older" generation may know more about who he is and what he has done, but only those living under a rock don't at least know of him.
Jay-Z may be great at what he does, and in his genre. But as far as overall influence on society he hasn't matched up.

I'm a huge Jay-Z fan, but you are just being ignorant if you think that.
There is a whole younger generation that knows about Elvis from the Lilo and Stitch movie and tv show on Disney. My 3 year old nephew knows quite a few Elvis songs, and can sing them word for word.
I would say that Elvis' song "In the Ghetto" is better then any of the songs Jay-Z has put out. He was singing about poverty in the ghetto long before Jay-Z
Its all about your taste in music, but there is no way that Jay-Z will ever be as big as Elvis.

Well I may be the odd man out here but in my mind both are very overrated.
Elvis wasn't a great guitar player and he didn't even write his own lyrics. His impact was mainly just influential. Never been a big Elvis fan, when it comes to early rock I'll take some Chuck Berry maybe even a little Buddy Holly and yes I'm aware Holly was influenced by Elvis but he was the better musician.
As for Jay Z he is also wildly overrated in my mind. I don't think there is another genre where the skill or talent of the artist is more incoherrant with sales than in Hip Hop. Most of the MC's that sell the most have the least talent. Now Jay-Z is one of the better mainstream MC's but as for best ever or even best of this decade he isn't even close. In fact I wouldn't put him in my top 10

For the record these are my top ten FAVORITES. This list doesn't necessarily go in order of skill for example I will concede that the argument can be made that Rakim and Pharoahe are quite possibly better lyricist than Mos Def. However everyone on this list I would put ahead of Jay-Z in terms of skills. And for the record my top four are all extremely close in which ones I like the most with Nas and KRS being tied for 1st and Mos and Chuck D following a fraction of a hair behind the other two.

Nas goes by a shortened version of his real name (Nasir Jones). Chuck D is simple a nickname for Carlton Douglas. So the answer is yes but who cares if they adopt stage names.
Bob Dylan doesn't go by his real name, Mark Twain isn't the famous writers real name, Jimi Hendrix's first name was Johnny so what if he changed it to Jimi. Bottom line who cares what names their mother gave them.
