I don’t get this trade for the Saints at all.

Possibly to trade up for a QB?

Why not wait until the draft when this deal is probably still on the table and you know who is taken?

They still have a trade to make. The more I think about it two mid round firsts probably isn't enough to move high enough.

Either they're positioning for a mega trade closer to the draft to get their QB, or they just really wanted multiple cracks at the first round this year.

There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

If this trade is part of a larger trade up to get a QB then it makes some sense. If not the Saints just got taken to the cleaners.

They gave up a 3rd to turn #18 into #16 and then they bought another 1st using capital from the next two drafts, and they flipped their 7th to a 6th.... that's actually not too terrible.

The real question is why didn't they just hang onto 18 and buy 16?

I read some conjecture on this deal that the Saints needed to get a little extra "talent" this year without elevating their cap # much.

Giving up future firsts is never a good idea if your starting QB is Jameis.

I just don’t understand why they did the trade today. This same trade would still be in the table draft day and they would have a much better idea of who they’d get. It’s a weird time to make this kind of trade.

I won't argue that one bit. It does seem odd, but perhaps they just wanted to nail down their plan now and not leave it to chance?

Seems like they don’t have a plan then. They just traded a ton of future draft capital for a mid first round pick and the uncertainty of that pick.

I do kind of wonder which team approached the other. I can see the Eagles wanting the future capital in case Hurts doesn't work out and they had a ton for this draft. Not sure what the Saints would be looking at. Probably OT and something. Maybe they like one of the QBs and wanted to get in front of Pittsburgh. Does seem a bit premature, though.

I don't think they just made the trade to make the trade. They have a plan.

As someone said, maybe just to acquire more cheap talent due to cap concerns.

Hey, maybe they want Baker. I could see Baker doing well in New Orleans. Maybe Baker and our 2nd for one of the 1sts?

I have a feeling someone is going to make a trade for Baker. He brings less risk over drafting a rookie QB in a rookie QB class that isn't exactly transcending.
