Here's an update on Taylor:

Sean Taylor is still listed in critical condition after six hours of surgery during which surgeons fought to save his life and repair a severed femoral artery in his groin.

He has survived the surgery and is in a coma.

Sean's girlfriend called 911 at 1:45 Monday morning reporting that he had been shot by home intruders. He was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami where surgeons fought to repair the severed femoral artery.

The femoral artery is a large artery that lies close to the surface in the groin and upper thigh. It is about as big around as your thumb and carries blood from the heart to the the legs. It is one of the main arteries of the body and a person will bleed to death in less than 4 minutes if this artery is severed.

Common complications from extreme blood loss are kidney failure and brain damage, as the kidneys and the brain require a constant blood supply to bring oxygen to sustain the life of the tissues.

Sean is in a coma, in intensive care, in critical condition after surviving 6 hours of surgery. At this point, his condition could improve, or it could deteriorate.

Washington Redskins owner,Dan Snyder, running back Clinton Portis, vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato, trainer Bubba Tyer, and other players are gathering in Miami to provide support and prayers for Sean and his family.

Investigators are interviewing Sean's girlfriend and other relatives who were in the home at the time of the shooting to try and determine the exact circumstances of the shooting.

Details including the number of intruders and the number of times Sean was shot have not been released. His family has requested that the hospital release no details of his condition.

Updates will be posted here as they become available.

UPDATE 4:15 pm CST:

Sean's attorney has described the break in circumstances.

According to him Sean and family and friends were at Sean's Palmetto Bay home when they heard sounds of a break in. Sean grabbed a machete (he is not allowed a gun as he is on probation) and went to see what was happening. Two shots were fired and he was hit by one shot in the groin. The number of intruders is unknown at this time.

The Crime Scene Investigation team remains at Sean's house collecting evidence and have been for the last 15 hours. Police investigators continue to question friends and family who were at the house at the time of the shooting.

There was some time lag between the shooting and the 911 call as Sean's girlfriend ascertained that the intruders had left and was able to get to Sean to help him and call 911.

Sean remains unconscious and unresponsive in intensive care. His condition is described as touch and go and very grave.

Best of luck to you, Sean Taylor!!!

Just by severing a femoral artery? I don't know about that... do you have any sources?

Well, not that I believe the rumor he's spreading but, if he lost enough blood and his heart stopped beating for a time, it could leave him brain damaged.

Well this is similar to the way I became paralyzed. I dissected my aorta (thoracic aortic dissection) in a car accident. When they went to repair it, they had to clamp off the blood flow to my brain and spinal chord for 23 minutes which caused an aneurysm on my spinal chord. The Doctors were worried that I suffered brain damage (I didn't) but I was paralyzed from T5 (right below chest) down due to the lack of blood. I have an incomplete injury, meaning I have feeling and some use of muscles below the injury.

So it is quite possible that if he survives, he could suffer brain damage or some sort of paralysis.

It's not that close to the surface... But they did get it right that it is a big artery... in the groin it's about the size of your thumb and down your thigh it doesn't get much smaller. Runs right along your femur bone.

Most of the time if you severe your femoral artery it's night night time. It's one of the biggest arteries in the body and is pumping a TON of blood very quickly. He's lucky to be alive.

As some have said he could have some serious brain damage even if he lives due to the amount of blood loss.

My prayers go out to him and his family and the Redskins nation.

Don't assume it is accidental and call the guy a moron.

Yeah because the guy who shot Sean is such an angel! I mean Taylor is obviously the bad guy in this, minding his own business at his home, and he gets shot... Sounds like a terrible person, he deserved what he got...

I think you're misinterpreting. I'm saying that if sean had a gun instead of a machete, this may have turned out differently. As in; he would be able to protect himself a bit more effectively.

Man, he truly is lucky to be alive with a severed femoral artery. I've got to think someone acted quickly and put a ton of pressure on that until EMS arrived. He owes someone big time.

Hopefully he pulls through and can thank them himself.

Really, what is up with that?? And you call yourself a browns fan.

In all seriousness, this is horrible. Best of luck to Sean and his family. But, I agree this isn't just some ordinary robbery.

Agreed. Some people make assumptions and just say things without thinking. The guy has not regained consciousness yet and is critical.

I'm willing to bet that this "robbery" or "burglary" isn't going to turn out to be that simple. This was probably done due to his "Thuglary" (yes i just made that word up). It was probably the result of some kind of illegal activities that Sean is or was involved with. I may be wrong.... but I doubt it.

Did you learn to make moronish statements in the navy, or have you been practicing all your life ?

Taylor house was broken in to the prior week. In fact he was in Miami to check on his home, and to get a second opinion from Dr John Uribe on his knee injury he suffered in the Philly game. That is why he wasn't with the team in Tampa.

You know , nothing he has done in the past has anything to do with this issue. however, many of you love to run the thuggery line out there everytime somthing happens to a former Cane.
As if the Buckeyes are choirboys.

Check the police blotter, you will find more thuggery in Columbus than Coral Gables now.

To make statements such as the ones you have made, when a persons ( yes persons, not players ) life is in the balance, shows what kind of person you are.

The Navy must be real proud to call you one of their own.

I guess some people can't focus on the issue at hand, that a young man's life is hanging by a thread, and we should all just be hoping he makes a full recovery, whether he can play football or not. For God's sake, the guy's kid was there. Imagine if he saw his dad laying on the ground, shot.

I think we should just forget about our own little agendas here and think about what's truly important.

I understand what you're saying, but I don't recall anyone saying "oh, yeah, former miami player - serves him right".

And how the Buckeyes came into this I have no idea.

His life isn't in the balance anymore. Sean Taylor died.

I still stand by my words. There was more to it that a burglary.

Sean Taylor dead.

Report: Redskins' Taylor, 24, Dead After Shooting
PALMETTO BAY, Fla. (CBS) ― Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor has died, a day after he was shot in the leg, said family friend Richard Sharpstein.

He said Taylor's father called him around 5:30 a.m. to tell him the news.

"His father called and said he was with Christ and he cried and thanked me," said Sharpstein, Taylor's former lawyer. "It's a tremendously sad and unnecessary event. He was a wonderful, humble, talented young man, and had a huge life in front of him. Obviously God had other plans."

He said he did not know exactly when Taylor died.

Doctors had been encouraged late Monday night when Taylor squeezed a nurse's hand. But Sharpstein said he was told Taylor never regained consciousness after being transported to the hospital and that he wasn't sure how he had squeezed the nurse's hand.

"Maybe he was trying to say goodbye or something," Sharpstein said.

The 24-year-old Redskins safety was shot early Monday in his home in the upper leg, damaging an artery and causing significant blood loss.

Taylor was in his fourth season with the Redskins after playing at the University of Miami, where he was an All-American in 2003. He led the team with five interceptions but had missed the last two games because of a knee injury.

This is horrible news, God take care of the ones he left behind.

I've absolutely zero proof to say what I'm about to say, but this isn't a simple break-in, not with his history.

Was listening to the early show with Jason Smith on ESPN radio this morning - phone lines in the home were cut, there was the knife left on his bed from the break-in a week ago...this was a hit.

Should be much, much more to come out of this story.

http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/11/27/obit.taylor.ap/index.html

MIAMI, Florida (AP) -- Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor has died, a day after he was shot in the leg, said family friend Richard Sharpstein.
art.taylor.02.ap.jpg

Sean Taylor never regained consciousness after being taken to a hospital, says a family friend.

Miami-Dade Police were investigating the attack, which came just eight days after an intruder was reported at Taylor's home. Officers were dispatched about 1:45 a.m. Monday after Taylor's girlfriend called 911. Taylor was airlifted to the hospital.

Sharpstein said Taylor's girlfriend told him the couple was awakened by loud noises, and Taylor grabbed a machete he keeps in the bedroom for protection. Someone then broke through the bedroom door and fired two shots, one missing and one hitting Taylor, Sharpstein said. Taylor's 1-year-old daughter, Jackie, was also in the house at the time, but neither she nor Taylor's girlfriend were injured.

"It could have been a possible burglary; it could have been a possible robbery," Miami-Dade Police Lt. Nancy Perez said. "It has not been confirmed as yet."

Taylor was shot at the pale yellow house he bought two years ago in the Miami suburb of Palmetto Bay. Taylor played at the University of Miami, where he was an All-American in 2003, and was also a high school standout in the city. His father, Pedro Taylor, is the police chief of Florida City.

I agree with you. While it's extremely sad that he's gone, and his little girl will now grow up without a father, I feel there is more to this story that we may never know. And Sean Taylor fans may not want to know. I'll leave it at that.

Hearing what went on there in the past week or so it sure seems that someone was sending him a message. One that he would have been wise to heed. Sad.

Truly horrible in every sense of the word, whether it was a simple burglary or something planned. In the end, it's just as sad.

I've been through this too many times personally, so I really feel for his family. Just terrible.

I'm no Policeman but normally ya dont hear robbers brusting thru a door to shot somebody, normal robbery's just involve breaking in & stealing things.....There is definatly another motive here, and alot more to the story than we might ever know.

Sean Taylor

MIAMI (AP) — Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor has died from injuries sustained when he was shot in the leg, said family friend Richard Sharpstein. He was 24.

Sharpstein said he did not know exactly when Taylor died.

Taylor was shot early Monday in his home in the upper leg, damaging an artery and causing significant blood loss. Miami-Dade Police were investigating the attack.

Taylor played at the University of Miami, where he was an All-American in 2003, and was also a high school standout in the city. His father, Pedro Taylor, is the police chief of Florida City.

Taylor had a troublesome first two years in the NFL after he was drafted No. 5 overall by the Redskins in 2004, but he had mostly behaved after his daughter, Jackie, was born in May 2006.

Taylor has been fined at least seven times during his professional career for late hits and other infractions. He was also fined $25,000 for skipping a mandatory rookie symposium shortly after he was drafted.

In 2005, Taylor was accused of brandishing a gun at a man during a fight over some all-terrain vehicles that had allegedly been stolen. Last year, he reached a deal in which he pleaded no contest to two misdemeanors and was sentenced to 18 months' probation. The pleas prompted another fine from the NFL but kept his football career intact.

This isn't directed at anyone person that posted here,,,, but geez people.. hate the guy, think he's a thug, call him names if you must, even question his manhood if it makes you feel better,,

But for Cryin out loud,,, a life has been snuffed out.. I don't give a damn whether it was truly a burglary or if it was something else.. A young man who seemingly was turning his life around (from a personal standpoint) was shot and killed..

A little respect is in order!

R.I.P. Sean Taylor......

Lesson learned... Do the right thing. I mean he could have just been a victim, but he has had his trouble in the past, and could have been a target because of it. Seriously... who shoots someone in the groin!! crazy..

My prayers go out to his family, his girlfriend, his daughter, and all loved ones.

Another one gone by the bullet....
