I always got the sense that Mayock wanted to be the smartest GM in the room. He took some head scratchers in the first round annually.

Mayock's rise to GM isn't really any different than John Lynch's, they're both ex-players the only difference is Mayock became a draft guru and Lynch became a NFL broadcaster.

Then he needs to be the first one in the room and then immediately lock the door.

I don't think it's all that terrible if you have a plan... but it's gambling, plain and simple. Speed, quick twitch and athletics jump off the page. Drops make him much more like Anthony Schwartz and less like the "DeSean Jackson" he was compared to coming out of the draft. I liked him a little more than I should have coming out, but still thought 21st overall was about a round too high.

At the end of the day (imo) a 7th and a 5th (two drafts later) isn't that big of a check to write. I mean, if the conditional pick remains a 4th -- you got some of what you wanted and expected, right?


Maybe they have some plans on how to use his "intriguing" skill-set. There's no excuses for his crappy play, but the Eagles (and Hurts) didn't do him or themselves any favors.

I'm guessing new OC, Texas born and bred Wes Phillips, probably loved him at TCU... and the Vikings didn't think the price was too high for the upside.

I liked Bum. I liked when the head coach could have some personality and not just dress up in league approved dress. I always liked Bum on the sidelines wearing that 10 gallon cowboy hat.

The fact we took on $20MM was obviously a contributing factor.

and, chances are, we'll have to throw that sort of contract at him again to keep him from leaving as soon as this deal is up. He never wanted to be here. Period. He's only "excited" about being here because we gave him the most insane contract, ever. So, to think he won't bolt as a free agent is just wishful thinking.

I don't think a lot of top-tier FA QBs leave their team. The team does what it has to do to keep the guy. I really can't remember the last one to leave his team as a FA. Can anyone else?

I posted the tweet because it was news. I also posted it because I think it shows just how badly the Browns want to win. I do think the contract is an outlier like the tweet said. And I commend the Brown's FO and ownership for having the guts to stick to their necks out and do what they had to do in order to acquire a top-tier QB. They recognized they were not going to win it all w/what they had at qb and they made a move they surely knew had to be unpopular on many levels in order to win. It may never work, but damn it, at least they are trying.

And I would not rule out in 3 years when 60 mil is the average for a QB, that he doesn't start making a stink and try to force his way out.

Of course he will. He signed the 2nd richest contract in football in 2020 and 3 1/2 months later he was demanding a trade. Berry and Stefanski have no power now. They mortgaged that power when they sold their souls and their morals to get Watson in the name of winning. Which leads credence to the fact that if things don't go exactly as to what Watson has planned, Berry and Stefanski will be toast or he'll be demanding another trade. Count on it!

I would absolutely fully expect contract demands in year 4. No reason not to think this is almost guaranteed. Possibly at the end of year 3. Hopefully his play earns him a favorable response and Browns Fans will be saying "Pay the man, he's worth it" ....

Agreed. If I was the owner of the Browns, I would never have approved this trade.
I would much rather have gone through this season with Baker then drafted a rookie Qb to start next season in what looks to be an extremely talented and deep draft

I find it impossible to root for the guy so I am not finding great enjoyment rooting for the Browns. As such, I cancelled my NFL ticket. I suffered through all those losing seasons and never wavered. When I cancelled they asked me why. After I explained, they actually suggested that I root for another team. Really? I am not quiting the Browns, I am suspending my patronage. Who just finds a new team?

I'll stick around, I'll pay attention, I'll be happier when they win than when they lose, but my enjoyment is tainted. I won't be able to enjoy a Browns win led by watson nearly as much as if we had nearly any other Qb (the exception might be micheal vick). When watson is gone, I hope to come back in full force. But who knows. After a few years I might just quit football altogether. Doubt I will leave hear because I consider many of you to be friends, even though I have never met any of you in person.

I think you speak for many posters and fans. And I am in the exact same situation with Sunday Ticket (I've not been a direct Tv customer for maybe 3 years, and paid for it separately).

That's a pretty big loss. I think he had double digit sacks last year.

I respect everyone’s opinion on the Watson situation. But I re-upped for Sunday Ticket no problem, and can’t wait until DW is our QB, hoping we still are in the playoff hunt by then.

I don’t feel great about this whole thing, but I don’t feel any less passionate as a fan. I (we) have gone through a river of poo since the late 80s.

Probably not going to go all that well this year, bro...........but long term............we got our guy.
