There were several, and I do mean several guitar players who were MUCH better than Eddie in his prime. And I know the excuse given as to why people thought he was so great... "He influenced many of today's guitarists!" That's because they kept playing Van Halen songs until it made people's ears bleed so they were exposed to so much of his music.

I’d like to know who those “several” guitarists are. Seriously would love to hear them, because they must be phenomenal. Only ones who came close were Hendrix and Rik Emmett. Maybe Jeff Beck. Not Page or Clapton.
You obviously don’t know guitar genius when you hear it.
To a degree the greatest arguments are subjective.
If you play guitar it maybe a style that influences you. If are a listener maybe it is the genre.
BB King, Albert King, Buddy Guy, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Mark Knopfler, Ry Cooder, Joe Bonamassa, Robert Johnson, Chet Atkins, Chuck Berry, Wes Montgomery, Yngwie J. Malmsteen, Jerry Garcia.

Heck lampy, Eddie just mixed chords and reverbed his way through songs. Maybe add in some feedback.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.
I have to go back to a Beatles song. I Feel Fine is the first known recording where feedback was deliberatly used in the composition of the song. Paul hit his bass note and Lennon stuck his guitar in to the amp to get the buzz before hitting the famous opening lick.

My grandfather played with Chet Atkins one time. It was one of those highlight of his life type memories. He talked of up to his death.
I don't think there is a right or wrong. It is not a matter of knowing what they don't know.
There are great guitar players all over the world. Many are not known by the general public but have had a heavy influence on other musicians.
Of course music is personal taste and of course we are all entitled to own views. But there are times when it is, in fact, a matter of someone not knowing what they don’t know.
that’s like saying someone’s opinion matters if they think Michelangelo is a lesser painter than some guys selling $10 paintings at a tourist trap. The cream rises to the top, greatness gets established through the test of time.
Sometimes, it’s clear.
Sorry that I keep assisting in throwing this thread off the track.

What does having the ability to read and write music and understand the composition of music have to do with that? Are you going to start stalking me from thread to thread now? I sang and played in bands for decades. I don't even owe you that much of an explanation.

You spoke authoratiativly about who was or was not great at guitar. By your standards one must be able to demonstrate expertise to make such a distinction.
I'd say almost 30 years in bands, asking good guitar players who their influences were, the ability to read and write music gives me a pretty good basis. A much better basis for a valid take on great guitar players than you have on constitutional law for example.

Your knowledge of constitutional law is so small you couldn't judge who actually has any experience.
One of my favorite intros of all time. There are actually 2.....an acoustic intro for the first 2m, the a blow your mind electric intro at the 2:16 mark. That's the one I'm referring to.

I saw them about 15 years ago in town at a local annual festival. The cool thing about Tull is they play as they sounded on the records. With most bands is isn't the same live.
I get it, but I appreciate bands who play the sounds, then can do it live.
You have to understand the days are long and years are short for me at this point. Some will understand and all will understand in time, it may have been 25 years.
None the less, a good concert.
