Kevin Stefanski is Browns' winningest head coach since their return in 1999

As the Cleveland Browns defeated the Baltimore Ravens by a score of 13-3 on Saturday Night Football, another franchise milestone was defeated as well. Notching his 25th win as the head coach of the Browns, Kevin Stefanski is now the winningest head coach since the franchise returned in 1999.

Surpassing both Romeo Crennel and Butch Davis, who coaches 12 and 16 more games respectively than Stefanski, the current head coach in Cleveland has surpassed them in just 47 games coached. With three games left to go, there is a good opportunity for Stefanski and the Browns to reach 28 by the end of the season.

Stefanski’s career record as a head coach in the NFL now sits at 25-22 in less than three seasons leading the Browns.

I don't think any of our head coaches had a winning record over the course of their career w/the Browns. At least, it sure doesn't seem that way.

Schottenheimer remained with the Browns until 1988, amassing a 44–27 (. 620) regular-season record and a 2–4 (. 333) mark in the playoffs, including four playoff appearances, three AFC Central Division titles, and two trips to the AFC Championship Game (both against the Denver Broncos).

You are factually correct. And while the blame for all of the Browns woes certainly doesn't fall on Stefanski, what I take from the information you posted is that mediocrity is cetainly better than misery. I mean if that's the goal you're shooting for.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

We are currently 3-2 in the division too.

I am aware it’s the overall that counts. But usually our division record isn’t good.

Since the return we've never had a team/roster as the good as the one Stefanski has enjoyed. That's one factor. We've had a lot of bad head coaches, we've had okay coaches/head coaches who were canned too soon or didn't get a fair shake. There are lots of variables. I think we've had a 2 or 3 HC's who would have at least equaled Stefanski's record given the same roster, but that's a subjective opinion.

Gregg Williams took over a dysfunctional team that Hue had led to an abysmal record, and he started winning right away. I wanted to keep him - but now he's completely out of the NFL so, who knows if he would have ended up being as big a disaster as Kitchens?

I figured as much. When I googled Marty I was actually surprised at how good the record was and thought I would throw it up here anyway.

Though it is true that Stefanski currently stands a 25-22 for his career, that 25-22 record was attained while having a playoff caliber team each and every year he's been HC. Add to that fact that Stefanski has never finished higher than 3rd place in the AFC North with as much a possibility of finishing in last place this year as 3rd place and you would see why people are questioning him as the Browns HC. With the talent this guy has had, it's a disgrace the way the team has performed with so many elite players on the team. You can spin it any way you want but the fact still remains that with Stefanski as head coach with the elite roster he was handed has never finished higher than 3rd place in the AFC North.

I want to throw a red challenge flag on never finishing higher than 3rd place in the AFC North, ?

What were the final standings of the Browns and Ravens and steelers AFTER the Browns beat the steelers in the final game of 2020 to @ualify for playing the opening round game at the steelers in the playoffs.

I think the Browns were 2nd and the Ravens were 3rd by tie breaker, probably div record tie breaker as that usually decides a tie between teams in the same div. that have split head to head, ...

Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

Well
It appears the Ravens were the five seed, Browns the 6th seed and the Colts the seventh seed.
I was wrong, lose a timeout.
But the Browns were NOT the seventh seed that is stuck in my memory.

For some reason, I thought Pocic was done for the year. This is really good news for the Browns. Before the year, I thought he was a pretty bad player, especially in Pass Pro. However, he has had an outstanding year and our OL has struggled w/out him.

Elite players? Who besides Myles and Chubb? How many times has injuries derailed the team? Stephanski has a winning record and took the team to the playoffs.

We have had many injuries the last 2 years. Very few take that into consideration. Steub. is right. Last season Baker played hurt all year but one game. Our O-line was decimated with injuries in 2021 also. Ward was out half the season and there was more, but I can't think of them right now. This season our D was hit hard and our center position has a 5th stringer who is doing his best and Conklin has been hurt also. Let's face it, Jacoby did a better job than anyone expected and better than anywhere else he has played. That's on KS too. Ks has earned another year here with a QB the caliber of DW. JMO

I think you might be selling a few guys short. Teams don't have 22 Pro-bowlers on their teams - no team ever. In terms of realistic top level talent at a position: OL was stacked for a couple of years all be it injured last year. Bitonio, Conklin, Teller have all been top talent along the line even if age is catching up with some. Ward and Newsome were excellent together - Ward seemed to fall off a cliff early this season but back with a 90+ PFF grade this week and looking like 'the old' Ward. Johnson hasn't done a whole lot in a Browns Uni (although again played well this week) - but JJ3 was a top 3-4 safety in the NFL with his former team. Jarvis was as reliable a #2 in the league as you could ask for and while not a guy blowing by people and scoring TD's he was excellent in his role. You mention Chubb - but Hunt for 2 seasons was an elite back up who would have been able to start for half the teams in the NFL if not more. . . . I think saying our only 'elite' talent was Chubb and Myles is a bit of a misrepresentation of what Steve stated. And to my point - name me a more talented roster the Browns have had since the return? And as inconsistent and bad as Baker was at times (or all through his career if you prefer) he has still been considered one of the better QB's on our long list of failed attempts to fill that spot.

Or in the event it's needed, they might want to play a RB who has proven production in the NFL, D'Ernest Johnson. In the one year he carried for 100 carries he averaged 5.3 ypc.

He's the 2nd best back on the team after Chubb.

A couple of us were talking about leaders on the current Browns. I mentioned that I thought we missed Jarvis Landry's leadership. He's coming to town this weekend and here is a nice article where some of his teammates speak highly of him while also addressing the leadership angle.

News & Notes: Browns show appreciation for Jarvis Landry before his return to Cleveland

Landry transformed the culture in the Browns’ locker room in his four seasons in Cleveland before joining the Saints last offseason
Dec 20, 2022 at 04:26 PM

Anthony Poisal
Staff Writer

Jarvis Landry is no longer in Cleveland, but the effect he had among players in the Browns' locker room has still been felt this season.

Ask Nick Chubb, David Njoku or Denzel Ward.

All three players were among the seven still on the Browns' roster when Landry joined the team in 2018. Chubb and Ward were in their first NFL seasons and Njoku was in his second, and each of them can vividly recall the energy Landry brought to a team that initially lacked it after their 0-16 season a year prior.

"Jarvis taught me a lot," Chubb said Tuesday. "I came in here as a young rookie, and he was Jarvis Landry. Just on and off the field, everything, he's always there for me. A great person, a great player, a great leader. He was a big part of me being who I am in football."

Njoku credited Landry with instilling a true winning mentality in the building.

"I think he was one of the main reasons we got this thing turned around, along with obviously a few other players," he said. "I have to give credit to him for the majority of it because he had the mentality and the mindset of winning and pushing through adversity. I feel like that rubbed on a bunch of players at the time when he was here."

Those memories will come back this week when the Browns host the Saints, Landry's current team, on Saturday at FirstStadium. Landry signed with the Saints last offseason after four storied years with the Browns that are the most successful seasons since the franchise returned to Cleveland in 1999. He ranks 15th in franchise history with 3,560 receiving yards.

The top memory many players — and fans — remember most from Landry was his famous speech during a wide receivers meeting on an episode of HBO's Hard Knocks. The expletive-filled, but passionate speech about practicing through pain and not taking days off was considered a rallying cry for the team that season, which ended with a 7-8-1 record and represented a major step in a positive direction following the winless season.

"I remember the video," Chubb said. "What he said was true: If you're healthy, you can practice. You should, and things needed to change around here. Ever since then, things have changed. It's a lot of doing what Jarvis did here."

Landry backed that speech up by playing through several injuries during his career — a rib injury in 2020 and a knee injury in 2021 were among them, yet he continued to play each week and participate in practice, often giving cornerbacks a true test of the intensity that was to come from an opponent on game day.

"You couldn't take any days off with him," Ward said. "You had to lock in. He gave you those game reps that you looked for going against a guy like that to get you ready for the game."

Now, the Browns will face Landry in an actual game, and they expect nothing less than what they saw when Landry was their team leader.

He'll be on the other sideline, but he'll still be missed.

"If we had Jarvis here, it'd be amazing," Chubb said. "He was a great player and a great teammate. We all love him."

So, you are retracting your previous claims of Baker having a terrible supporting cast and are now acknowledging that he was surrounded by elite talent? It's good that you are growing as a human being.

Quite the contrary, the elite talent was never the issue - it was the injuries to the QB and the supporting cast that you refused to acknowledge. All I read here is the injuries this year and not having Watson. The Browns are performing worse this year than last year and that's a fact. Considering the way they have played, imagine what the record would be this year if Brissett/Watson had to go out on the field with no Cooper, an injured but playing DPJ, no Conklin, 50% Wills, no Hunt for 8-10 games, no Chubb for a couple of games, and let's tie your left arm to your side for 15 of the 17 games. Imagine if you will an injured Watson having his LT out and the 3rd string guy playing while blocking TJ Watt and your OC or glorified HC isn't giving the tackle any help as TJ Watt brutalizes Watson.

Fortunately, this thread isn't about our former QB but the poor HC the Browns have currently. You can't leave it alone because the guy lives in your head. Either way, it doesn't change the fact that Stefanski has had the most taented roster and squandered it now 2-years in a row. 3rd place in the division isn't cutting it and Stefanski has never been better than 3rd with all that talent - FACT!

I see Chubb having the biggest boost this week. We will have to run a ton and Pocic has been very good in run blocking.

I see the same poster that wants to mention former QB and make that the focus of the thread is at it again - You mentioned OBJ and the WR's, I thought OBJ was straight trash for the Browns, injured or not knowing where to line up most of the time. The one poster who appears to have any sort of inside knowledge of the team (GM) verified OBJ was free lancing routes ... so I don't agree with his name being dropped into the talented list. DPJ in his rookie year was pretty good and a pleasant surprise if not a world beater - he was battling through or was injured last year for much of the season and has reverted to what we hoped for based on his rookie season, hoping he takes another step forward next year with a talent like DW throwing him the ball.

I wasn't talking about Baker. I was talking about how steve changes his stories depending on the topic to further his agendas.

Maybe that's what you think you did. But in reality you just made it about Baker. Others can decide for themselves.

The Ski thread is closed...so I'll put this gem here:

"For Deshaun and really all of the players, there is a comfort level that comes with game reps, and there are certain situations that come up in games – you cover a lot in practice, and we have covered a lot of situations – and then sometimes situations come up in games that are unique, and it gives you an opportunity to cover them in the moment," Stefanski said on Sunday. "Then, this morning sitting down and watching the tape with all of the quarterbacks, we can go through all of those moments, take our time and talk through them. I think for Deshaun in particular but for all of our guys, for Deshaun getting into these game reps, getting into these situations and understanding why we are calling things and how we are trying to attack the defense.”

Ski seems to forget this for every pre-season slate of games.

While this is good news, it does not mean he will play this weekend. Designated to return and eligible to practice does not mean that he will be added to the active roster and be on the field this week. Hopefully, he will be but it is possible he may not play another down this year.

Ski is a project manager, not a head football coach. He manages the team.

LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

Of course, Vers made it about Baker. He shifts any post to Baker if anyone questions the Browns poor season, Stefanski's poor head coaching, or a player's lack of production. He uses the same tactic in every thread and it's all trying to sell how bad Baker was and "look at us now." Well, Baker is gone, and he has been gone since before the season started. The Browns upgraded the QB position, got better play than expected from Brissett, and the team is worse than last year. Worse than last year even after upgrading at QB, upgrading at WR, Conklin only missing 2 games instead of 10, Wills not missing any games compared to 4 last year, Chubb not missing any games compared to missing 3 in 2021 and Hunt missing none this year compared to missing 9 in 2021. Now injuries are a part of the game and I recognize that fact. However, injury wise, the injuries the Browns have had on offense in 2022 are pale in comparison to 2021 and the most important piece, QB, was upgraded and performed better as most posters on this forum state. The results though are poorer than 2021 with a better lineup and significantly less injuries.

Here's a stat for you to chew on, through 14 games, the Browns upgraded less injured offense has scored 34 TD's compared to the 32 TD's the Browns scored last year through 14 games with our great OC/HC Stefanski leading the way. In these last 3 games, the Browns offense has to score 6 TD's just to equal 2021's dismal results of 40 total offensive TD's. Better players, less injuries, and riddance of a horrible injured QB and the Browns are on pace to just score (based on average per game) a single TD more than the previous year. Yep, Stefanski deserves another year...................LOL. Doing less with more - that's Stefanski's moto.
