The reason I used the was because you said "in the same vein" while referring to Karen Carpenter and Janis Joplin. They were two singers with completely different styles, to say the very least. Sorry you misunderstood that. I wasn't criticizing your opinion, I was offering my opinion of your opinion regarding Joplin as one of rock's greatest vocal talents. Nothing more and nothing less. No, it wasn't directed at you...and I didn't mean Staind...I'm not a particular fan of Staind but I feel they at least hold credibility...I was thinking along the lines of Nickelback or Creed or any of the other ninety bands that I think are all the same.

I kind of agree with you on the Nickleback, Creed thing. Though I do enjoy some of the Nickleback songs. I was kind of more thinking of all the Seattle ands that came out right after Pealr Jam hit it big. The Meat Puppets, Gin Blossoms and those type of bands.

Old School, I'd have to go with Freddy. A few years ago Elton John and Axl Rose had to do a duet of Bohemian Rhapsody, probably because they wouldn't be able to pull off at least one part of the song by themselves.
Present day ... go ahead and laugh, but Dexter Holland of Offspring. Seems like I can never hear a good Offspring cover because nobody can hit the same notes that Dexter does.

jc.. OK, this thread is going all over the place. To truly determine or name a "Best Vocalist" some guidelines should be stated. Because I'm sorry, when I think of good vocalists, Janis Joplin really did not have a good voice, she had great songs, but have her since a Whitney Houston tune and you'd thing Roseann Barr was doing the national anthem again.  Eddy Vedar(sp?) as well, really doesn't have what I would consider a good voice, he sings his songs well, but his voice isn't all that appealing. I would consider a good vocalist as someone who has a decent range, good solid pitch, and the ability to sing most any song and make it sound good, and even more so, do it without effects and still sound good.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

You are correct Jules, Joplin had her hits in the 60's....whereas the Carpenters had most of their hits in the 70's.

Actually as far as being right, I think you are. Joplin passed in 1970 so she definetly wasnt from 1970s. Though Carpenter started in 65 she was a drummer I think at the beginning. I would ay as a singer Carpenters fame came in the 70s.
