It didn't all start under Trump. It started decades ago. Trump said there would be a crisis. Crybaby ilk said "orange man bad" and did everything possible to thwart any actions he took. Biden became president and opened the borders (with free prizes) causing the biggest migration catastrophe in the history of America.

They are both big deals. Just kike the current situation on the border is a big deal. There needs to be a lot more border agents and a lot more immigration judges to deal with the backlog of immigration hearings as a starter and I think there needs to be adjustments made to our immigration policies. That's something currently being negotiated between the GOP and the Biden administration.

I don't think there are many people that don't see it as a big issue. That includes the Biden administration. The only question remaining and being treated like a political football is how to best address the problem moving forward.

Texas blocks federal border agents from processing migrants in Eagle Pass public park

Washington — Texas state officials this week abruptly blocked federal U.S. Border Patrol agents from entering and patrolling a public area in the border town of Eagle Pass where they typically first encounter migrants who cross the Rio Grande illegally, two U.S. officials told CBS News on Thursday.

After seizing control of Shelby Park in Eagle Pass, Texas National Guard units deployed by Republican Gov. Greg Abbott have prevented Border Patrol agents from entering the area, the federal officials said. Border Patrol has used the park in recent weeks to hold migrants in an outdoor staging area before they are transported for further processing, including last month, when illegal crossings soared to record levels.

Earlier Thursday, Texas state officials prevented Border Patrol boats from patrolling that area, one of the officials added, requesting anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the press.

"They are denying entry to Border Patrol agents to conduct our duties," the official said, noting they are not sure "what authority (Texas officials) have over the federal government."

In a filing early Friday with the Supreme Court, the Justice Department described the extraordinary standoff between Texas and the federal government. Citing testimony from local officials and photos, the Justice Department said Texas was using armed Guardsmen and vehicles to deny Border Patrol agents and federal National Guard soldiers access to roughly 2.5 miles of the U.S.-Mexico border.

"Texas's new actions," the Justice Department said, "demonstrate an escalation of the State's measures to block Border Patrol's ability to patrol or even to surveil the border and be in a position to respond to emergencies."

Under federal law, Border Patrol has a legal responsibility to process migrants on U.S. soil and determine whether to detain them, transfer them to another agency, deport them or release them into the country, pending a court hearing. The international boundary between the U.S. and Mexico is located in the middle of the Rio Grande in Texas.

Eagle Pass Mayor Rolando Salinas said the small city, which administers Shelby Park, did not give Texas state officials permission to take over the area. "This is not something that we wanted," Salinas said Thursday. "This is not something that we asked for as a city."

Michael Perry, a spokesperson for the Texas Military Department, which oversees the state National Guard, said the actions taken by the state were designed to prevent illegal crossings by migrants.

"The Texas National Guard has maintained a presence with security points and temporary barrier in Shelby Park since 2021," Perry said in a statement. "The current posture is to prepare for future illegal immigrant surges and to restrict access to organizations that perpetuate illegal immigrant crossings in the park and greater Eagle Pass area."

In a statement Friday regarding the events in Eagle Pass, White House spokesperson Angelo Fernández Hernández said Texas was seeking to "politicize the border."

"Governor Abbott continues his extreme political stunts that not only seek to demonize and dehumanize people, but that also make it harder and more dangerous for Border Patrol to do their jobs," Fernández Hernández said.

The seizure of Shelby Park is the latest and most brazen effort by Texas state officials to challenge the federal government's authority on immigration. Under Abbott's leadership, Texas has bused tens of thousands of migrants to Democratic-led cities, arrested thousands of migrant adults on trespassing charges and fortified the banks of the Rio Grande with razor wire and floating barriers.

Last month, Abbott signed a law known as SB4 that would allow Texas law enforcement officials to arrest, jail and prosecute migrants on state criminal charges of entering the country illegally. The law, which criminalizes an action already illegal at the federal level, is being challenged in federal court by the Justice Department and civil rights groups. It is set to take effect in March.

In an affidavit attached to the Supreme Court filing, Robert Danley, a top Customs and Border Protection official in Eagle Pass, said Texas' actions were preventing his agents from patrolling the Rio Grande and processing migrants, including those who may be in distress. The park's seizure by the state, Danley said, has also reduced Border Patrol's surveillance capability in that area by 90% and created safety risks for both migrants and agents.

Now, Border Patrol is being forced to process migrants near a busy highway, Danley added.

"Without access to the staging area, mobile intake and loading onto transportation must occur on the shoulder along Loop 480, a busy two-lane highway most frequently used by commercial traffic traveling at a high speed," Danley wrote. "Because of the lack of physical space, there is an increased risk to both migrants and agents of traffic-related injury."

When he asked Texas officials to explain their actions, Danley said he was "advised that Texas does not want Border Patrol to be able to arrest, process, or transport migrants out of the identified area."

They should. Legally. Immigration laws and guidelines need to be overhauled. That is currently being negotiated between the GOP and the Biden administration. Some wannabe John Wayne acting governor has no place in that process. This is one park along of a total of 1254 miles of border that Texas shares with Mexico. The impact of such an action is negligible in the grand scheme of things. It's a political stunt plain and simple.

Just like that razor wire immigrants keep lifting up and crawling under. It hasn't stopped anyone or anything. The fact people keep falling for these stunts i find simply amazing. And many of them are otherwise intelligent people.

US says Texas blocked border agents from entering park to try to save 3 migrants who drowned

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) — The U.S. Homeland Security Department said Saturday that Texas denied federal agents access to a stretch of border when they were trying to rescue three migrants who drowned.

The federal government’s account came hours after U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar said the Texas Military Department and Texas National Guard “did not grant access to Border Patrol agents to save the migrants” Friday night. Mexican authorities recovered the bodies of a woman and two children Saturday across the border from Eagle Pass, Texas.

“This is a tragedy, and the State bears responsibility,” said Cuellar, the top Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee’s subcommittee for homeland security, in a statement.

The drownings come amid escalating tensions between Texas and the U.S. government over immigration enforcement. On Friday, the Justice Department told the U.S. Supreme Court that Texas had taken control of an area in Eagle Pass known as Shelby Park and were not letting Border Patrol agents enter.

The Texas Military Department said in a statement Saturday night that one of its units had searched the river after Border Patrol alerted them of the situation but did not find any migrants. The statement did not address the U.S. government’s claims that Texas authorities had “physically barred” Border Patrol agents from entering the park at the time.

Homeland Security echoed Cuellar’s account of the distress call. In a filing to the U.S. Supreme Court on Saturday, Texas acknowledged seizing the city park on the border but said the federal government had mischaracterized its actions and it was trying to resolve any disputes over access.

“In responding to a distress call from the Mexican government, Border Patrol agents were physically barred by Texas officials from entering the park,” Homeland Security said in a statement. “The Texas governor’s policies are cruel, dangerous, and inhumane, and Texas’s blatant disregard for federal authority over immigration poses grave risks.”

The park lies in a major corridor for migrants entering illegally from Mexico and is the center of Abbott’s aggressive attempts to stop them, known as Operation Lone Star. Migrants are periodically swept away to their deaths by the current of the Rio Grande.

Abbott’s office referred questions about the drownings to the Texas Military Department, which said its security personnel saw Mexican authorities responding to an incident across the river about 45 minutes after Border Patrol made the state aware of the situation. The department said it maintains water rescue equipment and works with local paramedics to assist migrants needing medical care.

“At no time did TMD security personnel along the river observe any distressed migrants, nor did TMD turn back any illegal immigrants from the US during this period,” the department said in the statement.

Cuellar, who represents a Texas border district, said Mexican authorities alerted the Border Patrol to the distressed migrants struggling in the river late Friday. He said federal agents attempted to call and relay the information to Texas National Guard members at Shelby Park, without success. Agents then visited the entrance to the park but were turned away, according to the congressman, who said they were told a Guard member would be sent to investigate the situation.

The 50-acre park is owned by the city, but it is used by the state Department of Public Safety and the Texas Military Department to patrol border crossings. Although daily crossings diminished from the thousands to about 500, state authorities put up fences and stationed military vehicles by the entry to deny access to the public and Border Patrol agents this week, according to a court filing.

In its Supreme Court filing, Texas challenged claims that Border Patrol agents were denied access. They said the Border Patrol has scaled down its presence since summer, when the state moved its resources and manpower to the park.

Federal agents were also granted access to the area to secure supplies, the state said.

Cuellar said there was no immediate information available about the victims’ nationalities, relationship and ages. The Mexican government made no public statements.

On Saturday members of the public held a ceremony at the park to mark the deaths of migrants in their region. Julio Vasquez, a pastor, said access was granted after making requests with the city and sharing pictures showing the entry still fenced up and guarded by members of the National Guard and military vehicles.

They know that under Trump his worst month , his worst year, were better than Biden’s best month and his best year. They know that there were more encounters at the border in 2023 under Biden that there were from 2017-2020 under Trump. That is the disaster that has blown up our border under Biden. Biden could take the steps necessary to start to reverse this mess. He could be Trump 2.0 with border policies. Lots of the more “normal” dems are asking him to do more to deal with it. But he has the looney lefties pretty much calling the shots.

We do not need “comprehensive immigration reform “ to deal with this . We just need a pres who puts Americans first . And illegals you see wading across the rio grande, digging under a border fence or coming thru a hole in the wall are not applying for amnesty. They are illegal immigrants and should be loaded into buses and shipped back where they came from. For those who come to ports of entry we should hire thousands of amnesty referees and station hundreds at each port of entry. Amnesty claims should be acted upon within days not years, and until the ruling happens they remain in Mexico or are detained at the border. No one is released into America.

These simple steps will help reduce encounters at the border. Here is a simple rule to remember. If you reward something you will get more of it. If we stop rewarding illegals when they arrive they will stop arriving.
