Luckily, after this, our piping will be all new so we SHOULDN'T have any issues as least until AFTER we sell this place in a couple years.

The problem with new homes is a lot of them come with HOA's attached to them. Pretty much all new houses in California come with these now, which is just like paying rent on top of the actual cost of the house.
Depends on what you get from your HOA fees... I know that for what we pay in HOA fees, I could not afford to either build an in-ground junior olympic pool, nor could I afford to a pool membership on that... I also couldn't afford to buy and maintain a big playground or a big open lot for football... Yea, sometimes the HOA nazi's drive me nuts with overly restrictive covenents but for the most part they are ok....

No, that's been somewhat updated, plus I can get that work done real cheap (best friend's hubby is electrician, he charges me next to nothing)

I absolutely love our "old" home, it's a 1890 Victorian, and I've completely redone all the electrical and plumbing without any problems, as a matter of fact, this home is more in square than alot of homes I have remodled in the past, so if anyone is thinking about buying an older home just make sure u get a good inspection first, then enjoy living in the present with the past. It's like a living history

Well, if the repair of the copper requires them to dig up the slab, and even then they can't guarantee that that will fix the problem. That and it may happen at another spot along the line. I would have then rerun the lines. You said it's split level and half the house is run through the floor joist in the basement I would assume then, so they should be able to just re-plumb the one half of the house now if money is an issue, with CPVC or Pex tubing though the soffit / attic. If it were me, I would seriously consider a mano-block installation though. It's where the piping is all run to a panel (much like a fuse/circuit breaker box) then out to each location in the house. This allows you to turn off a specific line in the house should something happen, rather than shutting off all the water. It will cost extra, but if you plan on doing more remodeling, it could prove useful.

Interesting thought there. We do plan to remodel the kitchen and add a fridge with ice and water in the door. That set up seems to be the easiest way to have everything set up and ready to go.
Anyway, the estimate came in and seems very reasonable. I'm sure I'll have plumbers in the house next week! LOL!

When I redo my plumbing, I'm going to put in one of those pressure equalizers/distributors. It's like a manifold that ensures equal pressure to all water outlets. That way, if someone is taking a shower, and a toilet is flushed, or the washer is running, the pressure to each stays balanced. It actuallt looks a lot like the picture you posted.
I'm also considering going tankless for my water heater. I wish I could afford to do it this year because I think there are some tax credits available for a high efficiency system ...... but maybe they'll extend those programs.

the mano-block is basically the same thing, different names for different regions I guess. Kind of like soda vs pop.

Well a water line for an icemaker is usually tapped off your kitchen sink valve, so that's really not relevant, but you may want to mention that to the plumber if your sink and fridge are on opposite sides of the room, he can drop the line in while he is there for minimal charge, versus calling him back in later to do it.
Just be sure he puts a junction box with a valve behind the fridge when he does it, and not just drop a line in that comes out of a hole in the wall. Much cleaner installation and makes for easier replacement should the line break one day, which they do do if you move the fridge occasionally for cleaning and stuff.
but like Ytown said, the central distribution system also helps with pressure changes. Since a typical installation has "branches", a line runs across your house and then each fixture branches off of that, so if someone at the end of the line is taking a shower, and then someone else up the line flushes the toilet you see a drop in pressure in other lines.
Tell you what, if i ever build another house, I'm going to insist they put each room on a separate circuit for electrical too. Currently if I flip the breaker for the front entry it turns off the living room, half the dining room, anything in the master bedroom on the living room adjoining wall, and the entire den. Same with the kitchen circuit, it shuts off the 3rd bedroom and the guest bath. And the garage circuit shuts off all the outdoor outlets and lights as well, except the pool light, which is part of the front entry/living room circuit.

We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

Ha! Same here on the electrical front. Turn off the breaker for the rec room (ground floor) and the electric for my office (top floor) shuts off.

I don't believe that the code allows for that. (unless you put in one HUGE breaker box) IIRC, for new construction/remodels lights go on one series of breakers, while outlets go on another. Also, only so much potential load can on any one breaker, so they get distributed over several rooms so that you don't need dozens of breakers to do the job of 10-12.

Extra panels aren't all that expensive. I have a seperate subpanel in the basement to run all of the basement stuff. So if I need to turn something off in the basement or if it flips, I don't have to go the garage where the main panel is.. or if I'm working on something, it's right there (and I installed it myself so I labeled it correctly, I don't have 4 breakers in a row called "Lights"... )

My biggest problems are due to the last owner being a "do it yourselfer" If you hear those words run like hell.
Truer words have NEVER been spoken! Recenlty sold a dandy one like that... This is why home inspectors make the big bucks.
Lees, I'm sorry to hear about your troubles. I hope everything gets fixed soon. Or you CAN just move!

BB, have you ever seen the movie 'The Money Pit" with Tom Hanks and Shelly Long... There you go.
I bought a 10 year old condo over in Walden in 1999.. I ended up spending 50K replacing all the plumbing in the house.. It's not always the age of the home, but the quality of construction..
My best to you.,.,,, hope it all works out

I'm a do-it-yourself type of guy but I do quality work, the house we bought was done by people who think they are do-it-yourself people but weren't, I noticed it and figured the cost of me fixing it was worth it. Not all do-it-yourself people are bad, some know what they are doing and take pride in the fact they did it and saved money.

Oh I totally agree. I didn't mean to offend anyone. I know a handful of people who ARE very knowledgeable. This particular house was not owned by one of those.

If/when you start researching this, please keep me in mind,....and let me know what you think. I want to do this too, if for no other reason than to save space, in addition to money/efficiency.
