Also Antonio Gates hurt his big toe, so he might drop out and that would send Winslow...right

Rookie left tackle Joe Thomas was named to the AFC Pro Bowl team Tuesday. Thomas was chosen as a first alternate last month and was named to the team when Jason Peters of Buffalo dropped out due to injury.
Thomas joins teammates Braylon Edwards and Joshua Cribbs as Pro Bowlers. Three others -- Eric Steinbach, Derek Anderson and Kellen Winslow -- remain first alternates.
That's great news and well deserved, IMO.
The Browns are well represented for the first time in a long time.
Just one problem....All of our Pro-Bowlers and alternate Pro-Bowlers are on offense.
Now lets hope that the Browns can continue to grow this offense into an unstoppable machine and begin to build the defensive side of the ball.
A lot of work to be done, but a big congratulations to the entire organization and especially to the guys who played their butts off. ...WOOF...mac

Just an incredible rookie season. Bias aside I didn't see an AFC LT have a better season.
I just can't believe we got one of the elite elites. Left Tackle - the toughest position to fill and in my opinion one of the few positions that will defy parity in the NFL. But it must be complimented. For so many year Ogden was not properly complimented and was a rare elite LT without an offense.
Joe T - faced some of the best pass rushers in the NFL. His only sack was in the snow game where the DE fell and crawled through the legs of the Pocket and got to DA.
Whenever we needed yards we seemed to have what we needed on that left side. The ability to work with the OL as a unit in a running attack amazed me considering he was a rookie. Pass Protection I knew his technique was there and could shine on the Island...but the running game is so much teamwork, character and determination. It takes years for a Zone Blocking Scheme to work with proficiency.
Again I got to take my hat off to Marshall our OL coach. Our execution was good for a first year OL. Imagine how much better we will be next year and the next.

Now I got to start pimping another position...lol
But I can't believe after all these years we have the best LT to come out in a long, long time!!!

I agree, I don't believe that Gates will risk further injury by playing in the Pro-Bowl Game! He has already been named, so that would kick in any incentives in his contract. Congrats Joe, You Earned it this year!!!! JMHO Go Brownies!!!

Nothing more to add here about JT's year and prospects beyond.
But wanted to throw in the the Browns won a coin flip with the Buccaneers to get to that 3 hole and select him. There's no doubt in my mind that Thomas would have gone to the Bucs in that scenario.
Thank you Lady Luck!

This is as good as any place to fess up. I was not high on us bringing Marshall in. He was fired by Houston after his OL was terrible. The guy obviously did a good job this year. Yes, we had a lot more talent, but what our OL did was exceptional. I apologize, Coach Marshall.

I would be calling the kettle black if I disagreed with you here. I thought we would be doomed with Marshall. I guess it's another case of a coach just needing some talent.

I have to admit, I wasn't sure what to think when we brought Marshall in either. However, when you watched the guys play together all season long, you could see that the protection was organized and the technique of the individual linemen was improved over a season ago. Some of the credit belongs with Chud (protection design and giving DA the ability to see where pressure might be coming from and adjust the formation accordingly). However, you have to give Marshall credit for getting these guys ready to go individually and collectively as a team. Also, we were VERY lucky to have only suffered one major injury across our starting five (for a change). Tuck filled in beautifully when Seth went down. It was a pleasure to watch these guys work this year!

Gates and Tomlinson might both be out for the Pro Bowl. That could mean Winslow and Lewis get free tickets to Hawaii!
.....we should hear soon.

Lewis is a first alternate? I must have missed that. I know Winslow and DA are one step from the Pro Bowl, but didn't realize Lewis was, too.

I don't know if they ever published a list of the alternates......Here is what we have now. AFC Pro Bowl Roster After I look at it, I wonder about Lorenzo Neal too. He's out with a broken leg.

Prime example imo of how a good coach still needs talent to be successsful. It kind of makes you wonder what some of our other coaches and coordinators could have done with this group that unlike other Browns teams had talent..............not complaining though I'll keep the coaches we have.
Congrats Joe.............you are the cog that turned the wheel all year long bud, and deserved to be there in the 1st place.

Edwards, Cribbs, and Thomas have all punched their tickets to Hawaii, but that may not be all.
Lorenzo Neal has a broken leg (not sure if Vickers is the alternate), I've heard Antonio Gates may not play (KW2 is next on the list), and LT has stated due to his injury de doubts he plays in the probowl. Fred Taylor and Jamal Lewis were the next alternates. Taylor made it after Parker got hurt. If LT doesn't go I think that means Lewis takes his spot.
The only reason people get lost in thought is because it's unfamiliar territory.

Vickers is only going to get better as time goes.. He really showed he was worth letting Smith go, and he filled the spot like a Vet.. He was everything I expected.. This kid will be the automatic first down on a short fields..
As For Joe T.. WOW, he's in a league of his own..

Just a little more Joe Thomas pimping here - for the BQ and the AP pimps over the past draft a big concern was the run blocking of Joe Thomas. Many of us JT pimps tried to convey that this was imitation scouts fodder from their web sites.
Well here is an excerpt from an OL statistical website - link will follow.
LEFT END LEFT TACKLE MID/GUARD RIGHT TACKLE RIGHT END TEAM ALY Rank ALY Rank ALY Rank ALY Rank ALY Rank 1 NE 4.48 11 4.99 5 4.75 2 4.65 7 4.39 10 2 NYG 4.85 7 4.37 14 4.70 3 4.46 12 4.87 3 3 CLE 5.97 1 5.14 3 4.35 8 4.73 3 5.07 2 4 PHI 5.30 2 6.00 1 4.20 14 4.58 10 3.66 24
We were ranked #1 on runs around the left end. And the #2 rank was over a half a yard behind us. You cannot run around Left end without the Left tackle sealing the corner. And on quick pitches he did well getting to the 2nd tier.
And runs over the Left Tackle...we were #3 in the NFL. True a lot of that attests to the team work of Steinbach and Thomas but still these are amazing numbers and results for a Rookie OLman.
mmmmm...OL stats (in my Homer bacon voice)

Lawrence Vickers was the shizz all year.
His play alone probably accounted for at least 250-400 of Jamal Lewis' 1300+ yards. Almost every timee you saw JLew get to the 2nd level unslowed, it was because of a key block thrown by Vickers. In an interview, Jamal as much as said it himself. Talked about developing a "feel" with his fullback. and how he and LV worked as one.
Also saw him catch a couple out of the backfield... and he didn't look too bad doing so. (I STILL hope they dump that quick handoff/Vickers line plunge play, tho- only worked once or twice this year, out of how many (?) times....)
And yes- he'll only get better from here on. (Talk about upside...)
Joe Thomas- even if he didn't get ANY Pro Bowl consideration, it wouldn't matter to me. I know what I saw... and what I saw was this: A LT spot that has been locked down for as long as we care to keep this guy. (...can you say "franchise tag?"...) I don't see us needing to worry about LT for at least 10 years (barring injury) That alone is priceless to a team that is trying to grow a dynasty.
I love having our players acknowleged for the pro bowl... it means that we are doing some things right. What's even cooler is that THIS MANY made any sort of pro bowl list.... just think how many more might be there in another year or two....
scary.

Before it is all said and done....we might add KW2 (Gates injury) and possibly DA, and Steinbach if any one else drops. Not sure on Jamal's reserve status.

Hey I got a question it's kinda off topic but oh well it's still about Joe Thomas.
Do you think that Jake Long is going to better(kinda hard to do that), worse, or the same as Joe....I personally feel if both were available last year we would have still took Joe Thomas...
Thoughts?

I don't think Long will do as good as Thomas, but that isn't really saying much. Thomas had an extraordinary year for a rookie LT. I think Long will do well enough for being a rookie, and will develop into a good LT with time.

Yes. 2006 and 2007 Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Ten_Con...man_of_the_YearThat said, I don't think Long's got the chops to be better than JT. I think Joe's play at Wisconsin wasn't nearly as good as its been in his rookie year in the NFL, and that's why Long was considered for the award over Joe. That, and Michigan's only loss was in the last regular season game to the #1 team in the nation, and Wisconsin's only loss was halfway through the season to Michigan. On top of that, Wisconsin kind of had a cakewalk schedule aside from Michigan. If Jake and Joe were neck and neck for the trophy, they probably gave it to the better team -- Michigan. Still, I don't know that Long will be that great of a tackle. I think he'd make one helluva tackle on the right side, but on the left he might just be decent enough to get by.

Well, Joe and Long are different guys. My impression of Long is that he's probably physically stronger than Joe is (the guy is definitely a road-grater type of tackle). However, Joe is quicker and I think his technique was MUCH more sound coming out of college than Jake's will be. I think Long is a very good prospect who will DEVELOP into a good starter at either right or left tackle. However, I don't think Long is (or will be) the player Joe is (or will be) be when all is said and done.

Thomas also has one of the fastest learning curves I've seen in a long time. Watched last year at training camp and was very impressed with how fast he fixed a problem after the coaches told him what he was doing wrong. Kid has some skills and we have yet to see how far those skills will take him. (and how much he will improve them.)

I don't think it is even going to be close. Long is a mauler. He doesn't have the feet, the agility, the smarts, the technique of Joe.
And if you know me at all............I am not one to just pimp Brown's players. Joe is the real deal. I think he will go down as one of the greatest LTs to ever play the game.
Long will be okay. I actually see him more as a RT. And I gotta say this.............someone was mentioning about Joe improving greatly this year. Dude, Joe was way better than Long in college. I think Joe won the Outland and Long apparently won the Best OL-man in the Big Ten, but awards are overrated.
I knew Joe was the best offensive lineman in college last year. Hell, I sure argued long and hard about us drafting him. I have never been more sure on a player than I was on Joe. He was the surest pick I've seen come out of college since..............hell, I can't think of any that you all might know. I was going to say Peyton Manning, but all QBs have question marks. I had ZERO questions about Joe.
I'm telling you guys................Joe, if he stays healthy, is going to be a first ballot HOFer. I've ripped Savage in the past, but the guy made a GREAT pick when he chose Joe.

Damn Vers, that's some serious props coming from you man!
What do you think of long as a RT (should he, by some freakish miracle, fall to a point where he was on the board when we picked and was our top rated player )?

Yeah, I don't give a lot of props, but Joe deserves them. PPE...........let me tell you this..........as much as I pimped Joe before the draft, I was still surprised by how well he played as a rookie at the second most difficult spot on the football field. The guy is amazing. Damn, I just wrote in passive voice again, but I am too tired to fix it. *L*
Drafting Long at RT? Wow. You know I love to draft offensive lineman, but I wouldn't use my top pick on an o-lineman this year. And I am not really sold on Long anyway. He wears down late in games. He is big, mean, and physical. But his technique isn't quite up to par and his endurance is suspect. I think he will be a good player, but I couldn't justify picking him when we have so many other issues.
We both know we have to go defense w/our top pick. I still believe that if you have a good offensive line, a great defensive line, and a QB who can make big plays.........you can win, and win a lot.
We have one and a half covered. *L* Time to draft and hit free agency to fix the one whole that is lacking.
