Not saying that Stefanski is toast, or that we'd hire a coordinator if he is .... but here's some names to consider ...... just in case. (and truth be told, I have trouble surviving 3 and 4 win consequtive seasons or even a 5 win season if we somehow beat the Bengals) https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/ranking-nfl-head-coach-candidates/Naturally, all eyes in the NFL are currently fixated on what the playoff picture will look like as we rocket toward the regular-season finale in Week 18. However, only a select few franchises will actually enter the race for a Lombardi Trophy this season. As for the others, they'll be picking themselves up by their bootstraps and start planning for a better tomorrow in 2026. Within that group that is on the outside looking in on the postseason are organizations that could be reevaluating their head coaching position as Black Monday looms. Already, there are two open jobs in the NFL in the New York Giants and the Tennessee Titans after they fired their head coaches midseason. However, more are expected to follow and be open by this time next week. When the dust settles on those firings, the next question will center around who could be the next coach up. Below, we're going to highlight some new blood who could enter the conversation this cycle. Specifically, we'll be ranking the top 10 candidates who have no prior history of being an NFL head coach. So, while the likes of Robert Saleh, Kliff Kingsbury, Mike McCarthy, Brian Flores and other veteran coaches will certainly be at top of mind, we'll exclude them for this exercise to take a look at some up-and-comers. 10. Grant Udinski Current position: Offensive coordinator, Jacksonville Jaguars If you're outside of Jacksonville, you probably haven't heard of Udinski, but he'll be an intriguing name to follow this hiring cycle and in the years to come until he gets scooped up. Earlier this month, CBS Sports NFL insider Jonathan Jones reported that Udinski, who turns 30 in January, could be getting head coaching interviews as early as this cycle. Of course, given Udinski's age, he may still be a few years away from securing a job, but it's not hard to see why he's garnering interest. Last year, he was the assistant OC and assistant quarterbacks coach with the Minnesota Vikings, who saw Sam Darnold resurrect his career with a 4,300-yard season. While he does not call plays for the Jaguars, Odinski has been a central piece to Trevor Lawrence finally clicking and leading an offense that is in the upper echelon of the league in scoring. 9. Mike LaFleur Current position: Offensive coordinator, Los Angeles Rams Whenever someone is under the Sean McVay umbrella, they're seemingly destined to get looks as a potential head coach at some point. For LaFleur, the younger brother of Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur, he could prove to be one of the latest in that regard. The 38-year-old has served as Los Angeles' OC since the 2023 season, and while he largely doesn't call the plays in L.A., he's helped spearhead the most prolific offense in the NFL this season. Los Angeles leads the NFL in points per game (30.1) and is second in total yards per game (394.6). Along with his connection to McVay, LaFleur also branches from the Kyle Shanahan tree, working under him as the passing game coordinator in San Francisco from 2017 to 2020 before leaving to become the offensive coordinator for the New York Jets under Robert Saleh. That stint in New York has the potential to hurt him as he did call plays over his tenure there, and the results were lackluster with Zach Wilson as the main signal-caller. Still, his pedigree under McVay will likely warrant him a look or two. 8. Anthony Weaver Current position: Defensive coordinator, Miami Dolphins The Dolphins are on the outside looking in on the playoffs and are potentially looking at a transformative offseason, particularly as they are projected to move on from Tua Tagovailoa in some capacity. While the season looked like it was going to result in an unmitigated disaster after a 1-6 start, they did level off, thanks in large part to Anthony Weaver's defense. Over the last nine games, where the club has gone 6-3 down the stretch, the former defensive end oversaw a unit that is allowing just 20.1 points per game entering Week 18. During his first year on the job in 2024, the Dolphins were a top five defense in the league in total yards allowed. That should set up the 45-year-old to garner some interviews. 7. Lou Anarumo Current position: Defensive coordinator, Indianapolis Colts Anarumo has been a popular head coaching candidate dating to his days as the defensive coordinator of the Cincinnati Bengals. However, he's yet to elevate to that role. After six seasons in Cincinnati, the 59-year-old was let go by Cincinnati after the 2024 campaign, but has landed on his feet quite well, quickly being hired as the defensive coordinator of the Colts. While most of the attention in Indy has been paid to the offense beginning with Daniel Jones and recently surrounding Phillip Rivers, Anarumo's defense has quietly been solid. They are among the best run defenses in the league and in the top half of the NFL in takeaways. Not only that, but Cincinnati's struggles defensively in 2025 only further prove he wasn't the problem. This stint with the Colts has seemingly boosted his stock back up to the point where he could once again have his fair share of interview requests coming in. NFL coordinators with something to prove: Which ones are trying to keep job, which ones could be head coaches? Jared Dubin NFL coordinators with something to prove: Which ones are trying to keep job, which ones could be head coaches? 6. Todd Monken Current position: Offensive coordinator, Baltimore Ravens Monken became a fascinating candidate a year ago after coming back to the NFL following a successful stint as the OC at Georgia and pulling the strings of a high-octane offense with the Baltimore Ravens. Over the 2023 and 2024 seasons in Baltimore, Monken's offenses were essentially top 10 across the board. During that stretch, Lamar Jackson also won the NFL MVP in 2023 and nearly won it again last season. This year, however, the Ravens offense has stalled out, in part, due to Jackson not being healthy. While that's a valid reason for the unit dropping off, it likely dents Monken's stock at touch. Nevertheless, the 59-year-old still should be one of the more popular candidates, particularly for teams looking for someone with an offensive background. 5. Jeff Hafley Current position: Defensive coordinator, Green Bay Packers Hafley is in his second stint coaching in the NFL, initially entering the league in 2012 as an assistant with the Buccaneers before making stops with the Browns (2014-2015) and 49ers (2016-2018) as their defensive backs coach. After that, he dipped back to the collegiate level for some time, working as the co-defensive coordinator at Ohio State for the 2019 season before taking on the head coaching role at Boston College. He's since spent the last two years as the DC in Green Bay and has steered the ship of some of the best defenses in the league. In Year 1 during the 2024 campaign, Green Bay was top five in the NFL in total yards and takeaways, and top 10 in the league in points allowed. This year, Green Bay has continued to be one of the sturdier defenses, but the unit did take a hit after losing star pass rusher Micah Parsons to a torn ACL. In spite of that, Hafley has shown he can be a strong defensive play-caller and has head coaching experience (albeit in the college circuit), making him a strong candidate this go around. 4. Chris Shula Current position: Defensive coordinator, Los Angeles Rams As we noted with LaFleur above, if you're a coordinator who is even remotely attached to Sean McVay, you're going to get attention during hiring cycles. That said, Shula's affiliation with McVay shouldn't be what has NFL decision-makers turn their attention toward him. Instead, it's the strong play by Los Angeles' defense over his tenure. Since assuming the DC role in 2024, the Rams have the fifth-highest pressure rate in the NFL and sixth-highest sack rate (including playoffs). He's taken a young unit and helped put L.A. in the thick of the Super Bowl conversation this season, where the Rams are holding opponents to 20.4 points per game, which is in the top third in the NFL. Shula's defense also has the third-lowest red zone touchdown rate (46.9%) and eighth-lowest third-down conversion rate (36.2) entering Week 18. Of course, Shula's blue blood background as the son of former Bengals head coach David Shula and the grandson of the late Hall of Fame coach Don Shula doesn't hurt his chances. 3. Klint Kubiak Current position: Offensive coordinator, Seattle Seahawks Kubiak has bounced around quite a bit over the last few years, but the next step in his career path should be as an NFL head coach. Most recently, Kubiak, the son of former NFL head coach Gary Kubiak, has served as the offensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints in 2024 and is now in that role with the Seattle Seahawks. In both spots, he's impressed. While the numbers don't exactly show it, Kubiak had a Saints offense punching above its weight class in 2024. When he left for Seattle this year, the numbers began backing up what our eyes told us during Kubiak's Saints tenure. With the Seahawks, Kubiak has formed an offense that is second in the league in scoring entering Week 18 and tied for fourth in the NFL in yards per play. Kubiak has continued the revitalization of Sam Darnold and, in some respects, even has him playing better than he did with Minnesota last year. Kubiak has also helped wideout Jaxon Smith-Njigba set franchise records in receiving yards and currently leads the league in that category. If you're looking for an offensive-minded coach, you'd be hard-pressed to find many as promising as Kubiak. 2. Jesse Minter Current position: Defensive coordinator, Los Angeles Rams Minter tops this list when it comes to defensive-minded head coaching candidates this cycle, who haven't had a kick at the can already. The 42-year-old started in the NFL working under John Harbaugh as an assistant with the Baltimore Ravens (2017-2020) before eventually finding his way to Jim Harbaugh, where he served as his defensive coordinator at Michigan from 2022 to 2023. There, he helped the Wolverines win a College Football Playoff National Championship before following Harbaugh to Los Angeles to work under him as his defensive coordinator for the Chargers. Over the last two seasons, Minter has had the Chargers defense playing at an elite level. In 2024, L.A. was the No. 1 scoring defense in the league. The unit is currently allowing the seventh-fewest points per game (20.1) in the NFL entering Week 18 this year, and is in the top half of the league in both turnovers and sacks. With the Harbaugh pedigree on his résumé, it won't be surprising to see Minter as a head coach sooner rather than later. 1. Joe Brady Current position: Offensive coordinator, Buffalo Bills Brady will be a highly sought-after candidate this cycle after the 36-year-old has impressed over his tenure as the offensive coordinator in Buffalo. Last season, he helped Josh Allen to an MVP award, while orchestrating an offense that finished No. 2 in the NFL in scoring and No. 10 in the league in total yards. This season, Buffalo's offense has taken a little bit of a step back, but one could argue that it has more to do with personnel than it does with anything related to Brady. Despite some questionable play at wide receiver, Brady has Buffalo entering the final week of the regular season ranking sixth in the league in scoring and fifth in total yards. The Bills also have arguably the NFL's best rushing attack, spearheaded by Allen and James Cook. Brady is the prototypical young, offensive-minded coach that organizations seem to love hiring. The question is whether or not the right opportunity comes around that forces Brady's hand to leave Josh Allen's side.
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

Don't you have to be good at your job to be considered for a promotion?
How Schwartz isn't on that list is beyond me.

https://dawgpounddaily.com/jim-schw...obs-is-exactly-what-browns-fans-want-nflI thought I saw a headline where Schwartz said he'd be interested in a HC spot specifically in Cleveland, but now I can't seem to find it. If we are canning Stefanski, I'd be ok with promoting Schwartz. The fact the D is still playing tough is a testament to his leadership and the attitude on that side of the ball... especially considering how they know they have to do all the heavy lifting to earn a win. It also offers a clear path to keeping that side of the ball intact in spite of a regime change, which we will need to do. I think JS also offers the best chance of a "guaranteed" upgrade to KS. He's got HC experience and I would go as far as to say he's learned from his mistakes in Detroit (IMO, he's tempered his personality a bit).

JMO but I think it would be beneficial and helpful to have a "Head Coach Defined" video or article - either from ex-players of Championship caliber teams or possibly former HC's. Becasue being a good coordinator or a good college HC does not translate to always being a good HC.
I suspect it would be hard to keep Schwartz if a new GM/HC is brought in - so I guess a Def minded HC is a possibility. I'd prefer to keep Schwartz if at all possible. And yes - I'd have him on a short list for HC.
Brian Flores, Mike LaFleur and Schwartz might be my top 3 if I had to come up with a short list. It'd all be about the individual and how they lead people and an organization more than any other element. Developing talent and working with a young roster would be a second priority - Jesse Minter might be of interest if you wanted to build on your D with the best defensiive lineman in the NFL on your team and a lot of supporting talent.

How Schwartz isn't on that list is beyond me. I'd imagine Schwartz's age plays a significant role. He's a wonderful DC, but what are his connections/ties to being able to bring in a younger OC to run that side of the ball as opposed to an older OC whom he may have a past history but is no longer considered "on the cutting edge" of today's NFL offenses? I think the days of being a HC have passed him by. Also, it was not long ago he stepped away from the NFL because of the mental grind and semi-retired. That has to factor as well.

Looking into the future a bit...should the Browns retain Stefanski for 2026 a name that is mentioned as a potential Browns HC is Marcus Freeman, the current Notre Dame HC.
Freeman is an Ohio native, growing up in the Dayton area and played LB for the OSU Buckeyes from 2004 to 2008..he was redshirted for 2005 due to a knee issue.
Freeman was drafted by the Bears in the 5th round of the 2009 draft. Freeman was cut by the Bears in the final cuts..he was signed by the Bills and then the Texans in 2009 before announcing his retirement due to an enlarged heart condition,
Freeman coached at Ohio State, Kent State, Purdue, Cincinnati and Notre Dame.
As of now, Freeman is a long term possibility as a future HC..jmo

Klint Kubiak would be the least personnel change toward the offensive players. Kubiak could potentially keep Schwartz. How much of a change would Kubiak be compared to Stefanski? Because they have a similar offensive philosophy.
I get the argument that there isn't much to salvage on the offense, but replacing personnel and being productive enough to make the playoffs will take a few years.
If Schwartz is also replaced, will this mean changes on the defense as well?
Berry has already started incorporating younger players. Those young players should start paying dividends next year.
I think the offense under Stefanski needs tackles, another receiver, and a quarterback to be effective. Making a coaching change seems unproductive.

I personally like the Kubiak/Shanny system... but we're going to be turning over a significant portion of the offensive roster regardless of who (if any) coaching changes there will be.
Beyond that, I'm a little tired of the latest wunderkind coordinator trend that's going on with HC hiring right now. So while I'll probably like what Kubiak would try to do with our O, I'd still be worried if he brings the right attitude/approach to the job. I'm not really sure what impact he'd actually have on the team.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

God this bums me out. I get it, I'm less confident in Ski than I've been at any time during his tenure. But the chances of getting it right in the short run are just so slim. I mean, throw a dart at that list. Any of them could or couldn't be good but like QBs, only one or two of them tops is a realistic and viable choice.
My thing is, I don't think we're actually that far away. Yes, it's hard to rebuild an entire OL well in one off season but not out of the rhelm. But a new OL and a true #1 WR and a retool on special teams... this is a different team. That's not so far fetched in one off season.
I think we have a ceiling with the QBs on the roster, we're just not more than a potential wild card entrant IMO. But if just a new OL, WR & ST retool, and maybe some more depth players at CB and RB, and we're an 8 to 11 win team. Win 10 or 11 games, we're in the think of the AFCN and not worried about coaching changes.
Last thing.. WE KNEW they weren't going to be great this year. OWNERSHIP KNEW that we weren't going to be great this year. AND.. and... and it's just absolutely true that we're still living and breathing in the wreckage that was the DW trade fiasco. The single biggest screw up in pro sports history according to many.
I know none of us have a vote in whether Ski goes or not, but it just seems like bad timing IMO.

I believe that some coaches prefer to be a DC or OC because they’re still coaching, trying to make players better, and they have a lot less pressure, fewer things they need to worry about.
I wouldn’t want to be a HC, in my NFL dream world I’m a D coordinator.

I agree. Keep KS and give him another year with some better players on the O-Line, WR and further development with Shedeur. We don't need any more turmoil. Jimmy Haslam said at the beginning of the season that 3 wins wouldn't cut it. Well, we won 4 so far so KS should be safe!!

If it is decided that the Browns will fire KS.
Then I would promote Schwartz to HC.
He has the respect of the locker room. He knows the players. He knows about coaching every position on the field.
He is a leader.
I would do everything to make sure I kept Tommy Rees. He is a young OC with a bright future in the NFL. I don't think he is ready yet to be a head coach.
Working under Schwartz would round out his resume and he might be a guy who we could consider down the road.
Schwartz is a no nonsense guy who is a straight shooter and a damn good coach. I don't care at all about his age.
I will take his knowledge over a first time "hot" coordinator.

My top choice would be Chris Shula as HC and he would bring over Mike LeFluer as his OC Rams cannot block LeFluer because it is considered a promotion as he currently does not call plays in LA
My 2nd choice would be Chris Shula with Josh McCown as the OC

I agree about Schwartz for the same reasons IF a change is made. If you hired a new HC outside of the team he would probably change the DC too and that would be even more turmoil. We have a good D in place I would hate to see it disrupted. I still say we should keep KS and AB for another year. Let's have another solid draft and FA signing period and see where we stand in a year. With the right moves and the further development of Shedeur I think we can contend next season.

I've never understood moves like these....what qualifications does this guy have re: a GM hire? Because he played 25 years ago and does color commentary for games?......Ok.

I don't understand them either. Maybe it's appealing to the fan base from a P.R. standpoint? Congrats on the payday though, Troy!
It's as goofy as the idea of Haslam hiring Peyton Manning to run the organization.

Pete Carrol might be a one year fill in HC...there are various possibilities to fill the HC position for 2026.
I just looked up Freeman's contract commitment for the future and learned that 5 days ago Freeman just signed a new contract that addresses his 2026 contract. Not sure if there are commitments beyond 2026.
Also, Freeman is loyal to his players so it looks like the soonest he might jump to the NFL would be 2027.

Now we have to look at that sorry ass list and take it seriously. Gahh. I hate the Browns like 50% of the time anymore. I never hated them more than after the DW trade but I had been recovering. But then just more nut shots. The default state of the team is just hopeless dysfunction.

I think coordinator and position coaches on the offensive side are almost more important than our upcoming HC hire. IMO, an overhaul of the staff on the offense side is overdue.
I bet we could go and get Callahan (the younger) to be OC. He was OC in Cinci from the 2019 season (the year BEFORE Burrow was drafted, Dalton's last year) until he left to be HC of the Titans. 2019 was a ROUGH year for their offense, but they showed marked improvement and had bright spots on their evolving offense. An old/spent Andy Dalton is probably significantly better than what we're going to send out there next year, but we do have some young talent on this roster that could benefit from a coach that's seen a successful offense built.
I think we need to put together a "heavy" offensive coaching staff regardless of who we hire for the top job.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/ml...67ea30351b4233bd6b938169838ecf&ei=27Schwartz has at least left the door open to being a HC... which translated from coach-speak tells me that's what he wants. He put off promotion talk when he was asked leading up to the Bengals game, but he's got at least one defensive star going to bat for him.

IMO Tommy Rees will someday be a head coach.
However, I doubt that he would be a candidate now.
If so, I just cannot see Jim Schwartz working under him. It would be an insult to Schwartz to be overlooked as the head coach.
Because of that Tommy keeping his OC position with Schwartz as head coach might be a consideration. Of course that would be Schwartz's decision.

I certainly like your line of thinking at least to some extent but there's only one problem. The HC assembles his coaching staff. Unless of course you hire a puppet and dictate his staff to him and I can't imagine that working out well. Who the OC will be moving forward "should be" decided by the new HC unless of course Haslam and the FO hires a HC they don't trust to assemble his own staff.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Agreed. That most was more an extension of my line of thinking from my previous post. I think the offensive side of the ball needed an infusion of coaching talent/blood regardless of whatever is happening at the HC/OC position. I think part of reforming this offense is to make sure we are as good as we can be on the coaching side.

I read that and nearly responded the same. You can definitely present those scenarios during the HC interviews though and see how receptive a HC is.

You certainly can. I'm just not too sure a quality HC candidate is going to take it well that an owner and GM are trying to name drop who should be their OC or which journeyman QB would do well running their system. That just sounds like it would be an awkward situation at best.

Face it, the only options are going to be the ones with out a lot of other options. We're CLEARLY the least attractive option of the teams available. No clear cut #1 QB and a very muddled QB room generally with a media lightening rod and a sexual predator, a lot of needs on offense that no one can be sure what Berry will do with, a major question about if Berry will be here if next year if the team isn't immediately successful, an owner who cares but is no-nothing and likes to occasionally grab the wheel with both hands... yea, I don't know. If I've got options this year or next, I might hold off. Yes, head coaching gigs are rare and valuable wherever they are but if you're looking at this gig, it's got more questions than answers. We'll have someone in here, We can be sure of that. This should be fun!

Maybe looking at Gannon as DC with JS being potential HC - Philly connection there - right up Berry's alley.
Hoping they are not considering him for HC.

Schwartz is the only one that makes any sense. Then hire an actual OC and set him loose to prove his name. I don't support any HC hire that want's to change our DC or change our Defense to a 3/4 defense. IF they do that might as well take a break for a decade.

Agree. Any possible incoming HC who wants to fiddle with our D needs to be dismissed from the proceedings. It would only make him look bad.

If he wanted the DC gone, I'd rubber stamp that. I trust that Harbaugh knows how to put together a defense and hire a DC.

My guess is the Raiders.
I don't think Harbough would take a job in the North division.

Also think the idea of him coming here is pretty ludicrous. That's why you'd have to give him the farm. But he still won't take it. Raiders or Giants. Or TV.

All I know is that the second guessing of the Browns coach would be greatly diminished. I would back up the Brinks truck as well, but I don't think he would take the Cleveland Job.

If he gets an interview and doesn't get the job, or if he isn't even a candidate, it would be clear the Browns don't think he is good enough. Why stay somewhere when they tell you that you don't have a future with the team?

In the end it will come down to the quarterback situation.
The Raiders have the first pick.
The Giants and Titans have their quarterback.
You go where ownership supports you and there is a quarterback you can win with.
Harbaugh will have his choice.
It will be interesting if KS gets the Giants gob. Dart was passed over by Berry.
If KS goes there and wins big. The Browns once again gets to wear the dunce cap.

In this thread it was reported his agent has been contacted by all 7 teams with a HC opening. Do you really think anyone with Harbaugh's stature in the NFL coaching world would consider the Browns even one of the top 3 or 4 destinations to continue building his legacy given all of the options available? He's used to having a QB. The Browns don't have one.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

There are only 32 NFL head coaches.
Lots of coaches and coordinators who want a chance.
However, be careful where you go. You can do more harm than good in some cases.
Vrabel gets it right and goes where there is a new star rising at quarterback. He is riding a rocket.
The Raiders have the first pick in the draft where Mendoza looks like the bet.
The Titans and Giants have young first round quarterbacks as well. The Cardinals and Falcons both have unclear futures at quarterback. The Ravens have Lamar.
Then there is Cleveland. What is the prospective head coach looking at?
You have to be honest. A good defense with players under contract. An offense under water. The OL is completely toast. Not a single true asset to build around.
The worst receiving unit in the NFL. And the cherry on top. No quarterback who currently would be considered a starter. And the 6th pick in a draft with little chance to find a solution.
Unless the new guy sees Shedeur as a legit starting QB which is hard to imagine. We will be passed over by the best candidates because it looks like a deadfall trap.
Somebody will take the job. Right off the bat you would question his judgement.

He's used to having a QB. The Browns don't have one. Baltimore has always had some sort of strength/advantage over their opponents. Early on it was their D along with a competent O... with Lamar's emergence the offense has done most of the heavy lifting in getting them wins while the D has kinda regressed (nowhere to go but down from the Ray Lewis/Ed Reed/Ngata years). The Browns have their defense, and I think established coaches see opportunity instead of struggle when they see stuff like the Browns offense (hurting for talent, but a few pieces in place and clear commitment to build with lots of resources). I think the conversation is less the history and makeup of the team, and more the workings of the FO and how Harbaugh can do what he wants to do if he comes here (which, to your larger point, is also a tougher one for us to navigate given Haslam's rep).

I suppose we are just going to have to agree to disagree here. I believe when looking at opportunities you look for the best opportunity available to you. He became the Ravens winningest coach, won Super Bowl XLVII, and earned NFL Coach of the Year honors. I think almost any team struggling who needs a HC would agree to give him a lot of control.
Any team drafting before the Browns is a struggling team. All of them are looking for that HC to turn their fortunes around. Turning any of those teams around would not only be a challenge but a great accomplishment. Some of those teams have QB's to build around. And I think another major key is an issue you brought up yourself. Haslam's reputation to meddle in everything.
I guess we'll just have to see how it all pans out. But If I were to wager, I'd give pretty good odds Harbaugh will only be in Cleveland when he comes here as HC of the opposing team.

The Browns should be doing everything in their power to get Harbaugh here.
But they are an unserious clown show of an organization so I doubt they will even try.
LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

When you have the ability to choose anywhere, you don't choose the place where success is least likely. The reason Cleveland is seen as a dog in this HC search is because our path to success is so muddled. A coach in Cleveland right now with Haslam and Berry and the dual distinction of being relatively powerless over the factors of success in the near term future and yet having all the pressure to field a winner asap or Berry is going to be gone and you with him as soon as the DW hex is lifted. No matter how nostalgic or history oriented someone may be, they look at the reality of stepping into a situation and evaluate the likelihood of navigating it to success and what the risk is if you're not pretty quickly. Cleveland not only doesn't have a QB (a coaches highest priority) but also doesn't have a viable path to one and the ones they have are highly problematic for a whole bunch of reasons besides not being good QBs.
If only they had waited one more year to kick Ski to the curb: you know what you have in Sanders, you likely have most of a rebuilt OL and a few new WR's, maybe you traded down again and got a 2nd pick next year and your out from under the DW yoke. You can make a decision one way or the other and this job looks a whole hell of a lot better. But we're dumb. We do dumb things and we do them dumbly. Harbaugh is not dumb.

Since it seems some seriously think Harbaugh would come here in the first place, here's the only outside shot scenario I see it working. If Haslam agrees to let Harbaugh hand pick his own GM. It's not as if Haslam never hired a HC first and let that coach be a part of the GM hiring process before. But with Harbaugh I don't think being a part of the process would be enough. He would have to have control. As we saw with watson, once Haslam sees that bright shiny object, he will let nothing stand in his way to get it. As of now it appears Barry has Haslam in his hip pocket. But I guess we'll just have to wait and see how far down that pocket he is buried. Since at this point in time it seems everyone is just throwing crap against the wall to see what sticks, there's my contribution to it.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Miami will go hard after Harbaugh.
The owner is tight with Harbaugh family.
McDaniels is IMO a OC not head coach.
I hope the Browns do not consider him for other than OC.
McDaniels as OC and Schwartz as head coach would be interesting.

It was rumored that the Browns have been interested in McDaniels for a while, but I'm at a loss to explain why that would be or what the connection is.
I'm with you that I don't think he's anywhere near talented enough as a coach (head or OC) to make up for his goofy approach. Dude shouldn't be a serious consideration.

He destroyed the Browns in a game.
His offense is very inventive. The route concepts are really good.
He will be hired IMO but not as a head coach.

When I heard that 7 teams inquired with Harbaugh's agent, meaning one with a coach, my first thought was Miami.

From what I've read McDaniels he has a good football mind but just isn't a leader of men and doesn't manage his staff well, poor communicator. So, naturally, he's perfect for the Browns.

The Browns will look at a bunch of people.
I would not even venture a guess.
The only thing that I think changes this entire process is Harbaugh.
Haslam would hire him in a heartbeat. If he were to say yes. Everything else would stop.
Berry will begin the parade but Haslam would end it with a yes from Harbaugh.

I'm not even entertaining the Harbaugh thought. I mean, there's a chance I could wind up with Gal Godot. Not a very good chance, mind you. Probably best I not spend too much time on that one.

The top 10 NFL standings
1. Bo NIx 2. Sam Darnold 3. Derek Maye 4. Trevor Lawrence 5. CJ Stroud 6. Matthew Stafford 7. Josh Allen 8. Brock Purdy 9. Caleb Williams 10. Jalen Hurts
I can keep going. Herbert, Rodgers, Love...etc. These are the QBs that made the playoffs. I highly doubt all those HC's are leader of men. I will guess they can manage a team and know how to get the best from their star QBs or get the most of their talented QBs.
Edit: apologies if I’m coming off harsh. Most of these coaches are good managers and creative offensively

Harbaugh or bust. Give him whatever he wants. Give him so much money he can't refuse and fire everyone he doesn't want. PERIOD. I bet he would keep our DC too.

I hear your point and upon reflection I actually agree with you. I would much rather have the technician than the cavemen. Prefer if they're the best of both of course but all things being equal, lean geek.
Separately, Miami has been painful to watch this year and if we thought the Browns were badly coached, I invite you to watch that Miami monday night game a few weeks ago. I hate when Trey Aikman is the announcer but I found totally agreed with him that game. It was mystifying from a coaching perspective. One game isn't everything of course and he's certainly had to work with a dog at QB. But in the games I've watched, they just didn't look cohesive or like they had a real game plan, like.. lacking a firm leadership grip. Thieu games against Pitt and the Ravens, they looked worse than us. Of course maybe I just caught the bad games. They did win more than we did, so there's that.

Who woulda thunk that the Bengals would be the moist stable team in the AFCN this year?

From the standpoint of their HC you would be correct. At least to this point. But they came in third in the division so I'm not so sure I would consider that stable.

I know that line is as old as the hills on granny's chest and twice as dusty but if you use it sparingly enough in just the right places it will still work every time.

The Daily Mail is not a reliable source of news - it is not a lot better than the Inquirer - so I'd check anything they claim. This does appear true and is all over lots of sources. https://www.espn.co.uk/nfl/story/_/...arbaugh-giants-expected-barring-setbacksUnsurprising. 1 down - hope we find ours soon and we land they guy we want and not choice number 4 or 5.

Makes sense. I think this is also sticking it to Baltimore in a way. Reports say the organization/Jackson wanted Monken fired and Harbaugh refused. Now the tandem is heading to work together again with Dart.

As it stands today I think three guys are finalists.
Schwartz, McDaniels, and Udinski as a dark horse.
Udinski is interesting. I listened to an interview with him and the Jags DC being interviewed together by a Jags reporter.
He has a presence. He is very respected by those who know him. He is young and does not have a lot of experience.
So, that may exclude him. But if he commands his interview. He might be the guy Berry recommends to Haslam.

Good luck Johnny boy, I’d choose Cleveland, Pittsburgh or any city over NYC…
At least he isn’t in the AFC North. A weird time in this division and I hope this organization gets its head out of its butt…won’t hold my breath…

I don’t mind the youthfulness IF he can have experienced coordinators (like Shchwartz) surrounding him. The only concern is just how many of those types of connections he has built and whether older guys want to work under such a relatively young HC. Some of the pressures need to be relieved while he finds his groove and you don’t want too many coaches doing that at once…

Sean McVay was 30 when he became the head coach of the Rams.
One thing about sports in general.
If you have the goods. People inside recognize it and will accept youth.
Inside there is no hiding. You cannot fool professionals.
If you know a trade and show up to work. People know right away if you can do the job or cannot.

Having been in the director level role of a few companies with responsibilities of overseeing many divisions and employees on various levels over the years I can tell you that sometimes a young person comes along and they just have the leadership and organizational wherewithal and you can usually see it pretty quick. There's a lot of people who fake it and they can still sometimes be successful if they know how to surround themselves with the right support and they know where their deficiencies lie and can compensate in ways. But a head coach of a football team is so public and just such a different animal. They have to have that CEO confidence and the mind for organization and running people. That's the biggest deal with those roles, it's that you have so many different roles. X's and O's of course but the personnel management is the real trick. It's better if people just naturally fall in line behind that person, they just have the gravity. That tends to accumulate with age. But not always. Some come out of the box like that.

The more I read about Udinski the more I think he may be the right choice.

He is young and doesn't have a ton of experience, but every time I read something about him or listen to him talk, it is clear to me that he has a great football mind. If it were up to me, he would be the next head coach of the Cleveland Browns. It's clear that he is very detail-oriented and that is exactly the kind of coach the Browns need. One quote that stands out the most to me is from Trevor Lawrence, who had arguably his best season as a pro this year with Udinski as his offensive coordinator. “I’ve never really met anyone like him. The way he approaches the preparation process, the attention to detail, you know just the game planning in general… There are no stones that are left unturned in his approach with us in the QB room.” https://brownswire.usatoday.com/sto...rkind-grant-udinski-saturday/88189753007So, after that, my biggest concern is how do you handle a locker room? I asked AI if he's a disciplinarian... Based on available reports, Jacksonville Jaguars Offensive Coordinator Grant Udinski is characterized more by a collaborative, detail-oriented, and energetic coaching style than as a strict disciplinarian. He is described as a "rising star" in the NFL coaching ranks known for his communication skills and work ethic.
Key characteristics of his coaching approach include:
Collaborative Process: Udinski views the coaching process as a collaborative effort, not a dictatorship.
Clarity and Detail: He is praised for his ability to simplify complex schemes and deliver a clear message to players, which helped in the resurgence of quarterbacks like Sam Darnold and the development of Trevor Lawrence.
High Energy: Sources frequently mention his energy and passion for coaching, which translates to interactions with both coaches and players.
Strong Work Ethic: His dedication is notable; he once lived in his car early in his career to pursue coaching opportunities. While discipline is an inherent part of any professional sports environment, public descriptions of Udinski focus more on his intellectual capacity, communication style, and collaborative leadership rather than a reputation as a stern disciplinarian. In contrast to (same question): Yes, Jacksonville Jaguars coach Liam Coen demonstrates disciplinary actions, particularly in response to the team's high penalty rate, hinting at potential personnel changes and expressing frustration with a lack of execution, indicating he's holding players accountable for discipline while also fostering a positive environment.
Evidence of Discipline: Personnel Changes: After a tough loss where the team gave up a big lead and led the NFL in penalties, Coen suggested personnel changes were coming due to poor performance and discipline.
Focus on Execution: He's publicly shown frustration with the lack of production and discipline, especially on the offensive and defensive lines, signaling a need for better execution.
Balancing Accountability & Positivity: Accountability: Coen aims to hold players accountable by highlighting weaknesses and areas for improvement.
Psychological Safety: He also strives to create psychological safety, allowing players to address mistakes without deflecting blame, which is a form of discipline through guidance.
In essence, Coen is seen as a coach who pushes for accountability and discipline, using both direct action (personnel) and positive reinforcement (psychological safety) to achieve it, according to reports from late 2025.He'll need to be more like Coen in order to command an NFL locker room. jmo Then lastly, I don't see this at all: Schwartz walks in and says "see ya, boss, don't forget to lock the door, even if you're sleeping on the couch". So, I'm guessing this hire would see Schwartz hit the door, maybe evenwith a little uncontrollable laughter on the way out.

And yet our offence stunk and we interviewed Reed for head coach. Dolphins offensive minded HC McDaniel has been thrown out there and their offense was bad. Even Authur Smith OC of the Steelers has been mentioned in an article as possible candidate. Steelers offence wasn't that much better than the Eagles so I threw Patullo's name out there.

I have lived in metro Atlanta longer than my birthplace of Cleveland.
However, I have never been a Falcons fan. I am a huge Braves fan.
I wish Kevin well. He was pure class all the way and I thank him for his time as head coach of the Browns.
I hope he wins big for the Falcons.

That validates nothing . When was the last the Falcons ownership Made intelligent front office moves? You can't even let it die after he's gone. You either have a serious obsession or are a troll. Neither one is healthy. He was obviously one of the top HC candidates in the NFL and you pretend you know better than all of those NFL owners. He was the second hire only to Harbaugh out of every HC candidate on the market. Let that fact sink in for a minute. And BTW the Falcons have a much better roster than the Browns. You sound just like a lot of Titans fans when New England hired Mike Vrabel.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Did the see the pool of coaches that are interviewing Its not a impressive list outside of Harbaugh who is a Giant now. Schwartz is not HC material. Stefanski going to give the Atlanta Journal Beat writers the same canned lines he gave in Cleveland I have to coach better . I have to look at the film . Meanwhile if Atlanta fans think he can develop Michael Pennix They are in for a big disappointment

Nobody cares what a HC says when he wins. He made the playoffs with Flacco after he was pulled off the couch. But then a lot of people like to play the role of Nostradumbass.

He made playoffs with Flacco as perfect things fell into place . Among those things facing weak azz schedule when Flacco came in. Bottom feeder defenses . Then what happened when the Browns faced the Texans ? Reality set in .want to be average . Hire Kevin Stefanski. Want to be good or better ...hire Jim Harbaugh. Stefanski won nothing of significance in Cleveland. A under .500 coach. Yawn

Another classic example of press and fans not reading it right. And we still don’t know if any of the conjectures that he wanted away from the Browns or someone in particular is just BS or not.

The NFL is something. Sure is. If the refs would have called a catch a catch, he might be there for another ten years. I agree that was a horrible call. As soon as the receivers back hit the ground the play was over. The defender then ripped the ball out of a tackled players hands and they called the play an interception. That led to Denver winning the game and now a coach losing his job. Terrible call and made worse when replayed and not overturned. Same thing happened in the Rams/Bears game, but the officials got it right and ruled a knee was down so the play was over before the defender pulled the ball away.

The NFL is something. No kidding.. For comparison sake, Marv Levy took his team to the Superbowl 4 times in a row,, Lost all for and stayed on for years after. Today, it's win now or take the highway... As if the only reason a team wins or loses on just the coach.....

It is bad enough that the refs determined the outcome.
I don't get it.
I don't understand the owners.
My inner self is an optimistic person. I am for sure a half full guy.
I cannot be that with the Browns. Haslam is a loser. He has proven it over and over again.
We have not hired the head coach yet. And I have zero confidence that this will come out right.
The Browns are in a position where it has to be Sanders. They do not have any other answer.
And there is no answer within sight. Berry is still the GM?

Same thing happened in the Rams/Bears game, but the officials got it right and ruled a knee was down so the play was over before the defender pulled the ball away. I didn't think it was bad call because it looked to me as though both players had their hands on the ball when his back hit. Neither had sole possession and the defender won the battle for possession. But that's neither here nor there really. It can certainly be seen in both directions and is questionable. The fact that his job hinged on that one play being the reason for the loss and deciding his fate is the crazy part of it and the refs really have nothing to do with that. That's on the Bills leadership.

I can see both sides but my inclination is that if there's call that could go either way, they should default to the team with possession keeps the ball. That really could have been called either way. My first reaction was that he was down. I get that it looked like he didn't have full possession but I feel like he had enough at the point of being down. It was only after that that his possession came into question.
I feel like Buffalo and Cleveland have a similar kind of tragic luck. When all the chips are in, the magic usually breaks bad. Like, everything has to go right, and it never does. My roommate in college was a Bills fan and I had a front row seat to those superbowls breaking his heart. It felt so Browns. Incidentally, I also have a friend, was major Saints fan, who has never watched a single down of NFL football since the pass interference no-call in 2019. Turned the TV off and washed his hands of the NFL forever and never looked back. I mentioned to him this year that it looks like they may have a QB and he told me he simply doesn't care anymore. Sometimes I think we would be much better served to go that route. But here we are.

I get what you're saying. If only we had the strength to just walk away. I've come close a few times but never quite managed to get there. It's caused me more pain and disappointment than it has caused me pleasure over the decades. Maybe somewhere down deep inside we are all masochists to a certain degree.

I look at plays like that with my orange & brown sunglasses on...if it was Denzel Ward stripping that ball away for the INT, the refs definitely would have called it a completed catch for the Bills (which it was was IMO)

Not to sidetrack, but honestly I felt the refs gave the game away when they randomly decided to start calling DPI on Broncos last drive. Bronco's O wasn't moving the ball at all, and then that DPI (which was no worse than the no-call on the Buffalo pass into the endzone) put them well within FG range.
I don't like the INT call, but that didn't necessarily seal it.

I don't like the INT call, but that didn't necessarily seal it. Dude. I was ecstatic to be watching a game where they just let them play -- and I mean "old school" let them play -- then boom, flags flying everywhere, mostly for the same team. Before that, no ticky-tacky bullsh#t. WRs weren't getting calls for a little tug ten yards after they grabbed two-fists full of jersey on their cut. Neither was the DB that was violated on that cut. Football. Then not football again. In Browns speak, they almost actually almost got it right.

I am tired of 40 yard pass plays that get the PI call.
Call a fifteen yard penalty and first down. So many of the calls are judgement calls.
That game on one play they don't call it then they do call it on two plays.
The last play where the guy threw his helmet. He was right there was no PI.

I hear you, but it was worse than that (IMO). They "calibrated" both teams' DBs all game to a more physical level and gave a clear signal how they were calling the game (staying out of it)... then changed tack at the worst possible time.
Regardless of where you fall on the "let them play" argument in terms of PI calls, the absolute WORST thing you can do is change how you're calling the game at the end. That first OT DPI call literally gave them the game (Buffalo didn't score, so a FG wins it).

Buffalo now becomes a top destination for potential head coaches.
McDermott was allegedly the #1 choice when Andrew Berry was part of the Sashi Brown group that was ultimately overridden by Haslem in favor of Coach Bootyskins. I wonder if they will try and bring him in even though it looks like the HC focus in on young OCs or Schwartz.
At DT, context and meaning are a scarecrow kicking at moving goalposts.

I’m pretty sure the Browns isn’t his top choice. Or anyone’s.

Who wouldn't commit a 15 yard penalty to prevent a TD or 40-50 yard gain?
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

I agree that they allowed them to play more physical than most NFL games do. But there has to be a line drawn somewhere. Allowing DB's to be more physical isn't the same thing as legalizing a mugging.

And all I'm saying is that if you're allowing mugging to happen then the least you can do is be consistent until the end of the game, and not arbitrarily change your mind (as if new refs were subbed in on the last drive).

I guess it's a matter of perspective. From my vantage point it appeared the refs allowed them to play physical and those DB's just keep pushing the envelope to the point they had to make those calls because there has to be a limit at some point.

And I literally almost typed the exact same thoughts on the "calibrated" front. 👊

Who wouldn't commit a 15 yard penalty to prevent a TD or 40-50 yard gain? I know this won't be popular, but I'm actually in favor of a tier system. This, of all penalties (maybe in any sport) is the most subjective. One more layer won't kill it. Have a spot variety for an egregious offense and a simple 10yd penalty for those of the incidental variety. This also gives humans and human nature a chance to correct itself after the fact; when they huddle-up or from the booth. One may say this complicates the game more; I say I'm tired of seeing too many games ruined and it's worth it.
