Soccer isn't most NFL Fans cup of tea so to speak - but it's the biggest sporting event on the planet. It's happening now and in Nth America. So - here's a post about it.

While the fake injuries and play acting are noxious - here are some clips of "the beautiful game" (a name for football that was popularized by Pele)

Ronaldinho was truly amazing - always played with a smile on his face. Scored lots and set up lots of goals for others. Very unselfish.

Maradona - if you've never seen this 2 minute 30 second video of his warm up, it will probably make you smile while he casually does some amazing things with the ball.

And this is a 4 minute tribute to Maradona from a great international player -

I'm not a huge soccer fan though will watch the world cup - here's one of my favorite players who was talented and a bit of a character. Sorry - video is grainy because he played a long time ago.

Mexico played well against a bad South African team. South Korea were excellent.
Brazil Vs Morocco the pick of the games in the next 2 days.

I'll watch some of it. I never really got into outdoor soccer. Too slow paced for me. I used to enjoy indoor soccer, Cleveland Crunch and all that.

It's supposed to be hard! If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great!

Loving the World Cup so far, don’t watch much soccer, but love watching the World Cup!

USA looked the best I’ve ever seen them play. Spain plays shortly, most oddsmakers have them winning it all. Bring on ALL the games.

Soccer was not a game I grew up with.

I have never played soccer. The sports I grew up with were boxing, baseball, football, and basketball.

I have tried to watch soccer but other than goals being scored. I don't know any of the fine details of the sport. So it is hard to appreciate what I am seeing.

When I watch baseball. It is the exact opposite. I know baseball on a coaching level. I know the absolute minutiae of baseball.

It seems hard to understand that you can play soccer and the game can often end in a tie. It seems like a contradiction to competition.

But the sport has a massive audience. So, I guess it doesn't matter.

Lots of running and passing on a giant field with no standard for size.

When I try to watch soccer. I drop out early. I wish our team well and have a close friends from Morocco and France that I will root for.

No offense to anyone, but ......

Watch soccer or watch paint dry.

Bring on the paint!

Much like yourself I'm simply not a soccer fan. I have nothing against the sport but I'm just of the age that it was ever really a part of my life growing up. I do however think it's a great thing that it's a sport that is watched around the world and involves the entire globe. Something that actually gives all a common interest to share. It's great that the U.S was selected to host the World Cup and is a big shot in the arm for the economy of the host cities.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

I'll go with watching grass grow. I did leave it on while working around the house the other day with no immediate impulses to hang myself; maybe I'm turning the corner.

When soccer comes on I am reminded of a Simpson's episode.

Everybody is juiced to watch the game. Then the announcer goes "Taylor passes to Johnson. Johnson passes to Taylor." And it continues with nothing but passes. Then everyone is gone and the passes continue.

I guess if I was raised where that was the game I would be like every soccer fan.

Go Team Go.

People appreciate and celebrate a no hitter... And there are many games with low scoring. As you say, growing up with a sport helps you to appreciate it. Rugby is a great sport, a phenomenal sport, but lost on most Americans also .

The USMT has played lights out. They're going to win their group. I think when they progress to the knockout stages there will be some ground swell of support and interest.. I mean if curling at the winter Olympics can catch on a winning US soccer team can. But still, not for everyone.

RO 32 all set. USA has an easier have against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Thursday. Anything can happen but I'd put money on them advancing.

Don't put too much money on it, you won't make anything! USA is heavily favored at -750.

The ends of the Egypt vs Iran and Austria vs Algeria matches were absolutely wild finishes.

A great day of drama ... love watching penalty shoot outs unless the team I am rooting or is taking part!

Huge game for us, getting the win and keeping the clean sheet after playing a man down for over a half hour. Truly awful call on the red card.

I agree that was a terrible red card in the USA game. There also was a terrible call in the Belgium game, in the 119th minute a penalty kick was given for Belgium, which they put in for the win.

Horrible decision - no intent and as bad as the slow motion reply was, and it was grim with the foot at an awkward angle and then Balogun standing on the ankle.... it was literally just one of those things. Not malicious. Hopefully they make it through vs Belgium. I think Belgium are a better match up for the USA than Senegal.... but we'll see. Have to find a goal scorer or two.

Did not see this coming, Balogun red card was “suspended” and he is cleared to play.

Yes - it's interesting. I don't think the red card was the right call. But there are plenty of questionable red cards that don't get reviewed or overturned... there is no FIFA process to suspend or review Balogun's red card and so this will leave a bad taste in most other nations mouths.

Fifa in crisis over Trump red card row

Fifa is facing a growing backlash as leading nations urge Gianni Infantino to come clean about the phone call from Donald Trump that threatens to undermine the World Cup.

The tournament was engulfed in its biggest crisis on Monday after it emerged President Trump called Infantino, the Fifa president, to help overturn Folarin Balogun's suspension for the United States, allowing him to play against Belgium in the round of 16.

From FIFA President Gianni Infantino:

“I have seen the public comments regarding the decision of the independent FIFA Disciplinary Committee related to the suspension of Folarin Balogun, and I would like to reiterate a fundamental principle of FIFA’s governance.

“FIFA’s judicial bodies are independent. They operate autonomously, apply the FIFA Disciplinary Code, and decide cases based on the applicable regulations and the specific facts before them. Their independence is essential to the credibility and integrity of football, and this must always be respected.

“Yes, I regularly discuss matters related to the FIFA World Cup with the President of the United States, and on this matter, I did receive a call from President Donald Trump, just as I receive calls from heads of state, government officials, football stakeholders and business executives from around the world on many different issues. During our conversation, I explained that there was an ongoing legal process involving FIFA’s independent judicial bodies and that the case would be decided in due course by the competent bodies. That is how FIFA’s system works, and it is a principle that I will always uphold.

“I read the decisions of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee when they are issued. Sometimes I am surprised by them. Sometimes I agree with them, and sometimes I disagree.

“What I always do, however, is respect those decisions and the autonomy of the bodies that make them. Whether we personally like a decision or not is irrelevant. Respect for independent institutions and the rule of law is what protects the integrity of our competitions and the credibility of FIFA at all times.”
