They only hate socialism when it's something they don't need or want. Ike heavily taxed the wealthy and created the largest infrastructure plan in U.S. history to that point by building the interstate highway system. I think we could move further left and copy some of the European countries who are WAY left of the USA and who are always ranking highly on quality of life, education etc. To add - like some countries in Europe: further left of anything like the Democrats ... And none of them communist.
