like I said in week 3 guys .. no one will give us what we want .... we won't be stupid and offer him what his agent wants .. and he will be here next year on his one year tender .... and then BQ WILL BURY HIM starting from day 1 in the OTA's and will be our starter for the next decade ...

*Yawn* ...

That is the problem diam as soon as the Team switches to BQ which will happen, DA's value will drop considerably. We will still be able to get solid compensation for him but we wont get the high first rounder and then some, we are able to get for him right now.

I believe the reason for RAC getting a contract has nothing to do so much with him having 2 years left but to show any players that we try and bring in that...

we are stable
we have a coach that will be here as long as any players we bring in from free agency. especially if they like RAC
we reward those who do well in the organization

If we do those things then the FA can feel comfortable knowing their coach will be here for the next... x amount of years.

The funny thing is that whatever coach can quit or get fired at any time and the contract means nothing

"Crennel's agent saying he's a "lame duck" head coach if he doesn't get an extension. That's complete and utter BS."

Truly utter BS...cause his Lame Duck season would be 09 not 08.

Vers...I think you're worried over a trivial point...not trivial in that high costs hurt you and others in the pocket. But trivial in the drop in the bucket regarding a contract.

If 20 mil to Butch didn't hurt you that much I can guarantee RAC's raise will not hurt you not even close.

The Brown's operate season to season on a fiscal basis. We are one of the richest franchises in profits and income. Randy is not losing money he is making money!

Could he say...hey lets reward the fans and not RAC - lower the ticket prices? I guess so. But its not a either or situation.

It doesn't hurt the organization one bit economically.
And I really don't think it comes close to effecting the Fan economically. That even being part of the equation is a non-argument. This coming from a businessman view. And a sports franchise has a different goal but you are talking the business side of the franchise. RAC's reward doesn't remotely effect the business aspects.

Now what are the upside. Reward and stability shown to players, young coaches - anyone who wishes to join this franchise.

The way we treated KW2...the way we treated Baxter and Bentley. Even TW by putting him on IR...he had that injury for 4 weeks. But we showed respect to him as a Veteran and didn't release him.

All this adds up. Now we are on the verge of becoming a winning organization...more heads will turn enviously to us. And when they look they will see this is an organization that treats their people right.

RAC paid his dues...paid for them long and hard. These past two seasons could not have been easy for him or his family. Yet we never really saw him waiver. Yet every morning we saw him come into his pressers with a smile...And a Good Morning How are you all? Steady to the task.

If you are worried about ticket prices going up...then you should hope we don't win a Super Bowl??? Of course not, well why let RAC's reward worry you.

And what makes ALL of this really crazy is that Mary Kay Cabot said that Linta said it, but Savage is saying that he didn't..

So we don't even know if it was ever actually said or if Mary Kay just made it up.... it's the damnest thing with Cabot lately.. I used to like her because she seemed like the only Browns Beat Reporter that just reported what she heard,, now it appears her hearing is going south or something.. too bad really.

How the hell does a guy drop in value if he didn't do anything to warrent a drop in value..

I mean, if BQ beats him out,, that doesn't mean he isn't the same QB that won 10 games last season.. it merely means that BQ is better..

How that causes DA's value to drop is way beyond me...

If he loses out to BQ there will be perception of him not being good enough to win the job over essentially a rookie. As soon as he becomes other teams will lowball us as we have already made the decision to start BQ and we will be looking to get something out of DA. I feel that will be less than what it is right now.

The Garret deal is because he will be the next HC in the big D period. It wont skew the coordinator pay scale as much as you think. When there is more at stake for the organization to make sure they keep ahold of their future than you will see high coordinator dollars. It will be the exception and not the norm.

Too bad it doesn't work that way.

Each and every single contract that goes above and beyond the last one sets the scale. Regardless of why he gets $3 million, it changes the landscape of every single negotation along the way.

Maybe,, but I doubt it.. BQ was a first round pick,, when drafted he was expected to take the starting role,, it was always assumed that BQ would be the starter here at some point.

That was delayed by DA's performance, which I might add is what it is and nothing can change it at this point.. it's in the record books..

His value is pretty much already established... the only thing that can mess it up is if he goes to camp and STINKS...... If that happens, then I think your theory of his value dropping will have merit.

The thing is, DA kinda stunk in camp last season also, so there may actually be reason to assume he's a lousy camp guy that just turns it on during the season... Can't say I like that, but who knows, stranger things have happened.

i don't know what chud's salary was, but it is possible that the going rate for coordinators today is similar to head coaching rates of a few years ago....

i used garret as an example...maybe jones was stupid...but if you want to keep a guy from taking a head coaching job...you just might have to pay him similarly...

this in turn makes head coach salaries go up....its a vicious circle...

it is possible that chuds pay, was close to (or slightly higher) to rac's after chuds extension....so they just extended rac, and gave him more cash too...

who knows....i could be way off base here....i'm just speculating as to why it could have happened...

I think Assassin is right on this.

No doubt agents will jump all over that as a starting point for their clients, but everyone knows the score.

There will be the natural escalation in salaries as the years go by. The Garrett deal will even contribute to that.

But not the point that it will become the 'starting point' for all others.

I just wanted to chime in with: I really don't care at this point what is happening in negotiations with RAC OR Anderson...... I want to know what the deal is with Jamal. RAC is under contract and we still hold the rights to Anderson.... Jamal is a Free Agent in less than 2 months and we NEED to wrap him up before he hits the street.

Kind of funny you brought this up because I thought quite a bit about the same thing as I was watching Turner run today.

I'm wondering how much Savage wants to get younger at the position. Plus, the 'a hungry Jamal is a good Jamal' comment keeps entering my consciousness.

I know we want to bring him back. I think we all have every reason to believe the FO definitely wants the same thing.

But now that things have settled down a bit, I think the contract will have to be very friendly to the Browns to get something done.

A few thoughts..
First..like I said on the other thread for Cleveland coaches..I'd wait before I give someone a extension..
HOWEVER if they give Rac one..I think it's more for him building morale on the team and getting the players to play for him..
A show of faith that will draw FA's here...

On DA...no matter what any media people say or fans ...Phil's gonna do what he thinks is best..if the offers coming in are not acceptable for him DA is here another year..the fact they haven't inked him long term already..and long term I DO MEAN 4- 6 years is evidence they really don't feel he's a lock..
I would be a bit surprised if we get the best offers and Phil doesn't ship him out..

He didn't show anything in practice before the season..so they really couldn't see his skills...
PPE..yes I'm curious about Lewis also...

Attack, Rish and Purp,, For the moment, I'm not too awfully concerned about any of this.. I mean the guys that haven't been signed, Anderson and Lewis..

Not having DA or Lewis signed is, IMO, not evidence of anything other than Phils cautious, calculated steps and the process by which these things happen.

With Lewis expecially, it's a negotiation, Savage throws out a number, the agent comes back with a different number, then Savage throws out another number and so on and so forth..

That takes time and it's not like there is nothing else going on.. I mean we have the Bowl game this week... Lots of scouting happening.. That's got to be a little time and thought consuming..

In about 15 days, I'll join you guys in your thinking. But for now, it looks pretty normal to me!

Yeah, I know, thus my reason for not being concerned... I think it's safe to say that Phil has proven that he knows what he's doing.. so like they say from the land down under... No worries mate!

Deadlines usually help one side or the other.....the side that feels it can gain push by backing up to the deadline will usually do so.

I was watching the SD game with an eye on Turner. I know Turner will likely be playing when Jamal is retired.... BUT... I was not overly impressed. I know it's just one game.... but IMO I'd take Jamal over Turner, hands down.

Get him signed... Phil!

I had the same thoughts, but like you said it was just one game...and it was the Pats. I thought he did get some tough yardage at times.

I still think this is a real possibility for this team, especially if we hit any snags with the Lewis talks.

Throw in Chud's familiarity with the guy, and I can see him being a Brown.

In case things dont workout with Jamal, we have nice duo of Jason Write and Jerome Harrison.

I am more concern about OB spot. Situation like us (having 2 serviceable QB) can create some unwanted problems in chemistry of team.

When Turner hits the open market, he'll be in demand. No matter how much (if at all) he likes Chud, money will talk. We know what we got with Jamal. I'm with you, I say we keep him.

U mean backups..Wright is nothing more than a role player and not a every down back..he lacks breakaway speed and super quickness..
Harrison has the speed and cutback ability but he cannot seem to pickup blitzes...either he improves his blocking or he'll be cut ...

If Lewis isn't resigned the Browns will need a back more than a QB..we have two..

Of course this reply is to all but I know out of all the posters - you have probably been the most steadfast on stating that you could care less about anything except us winning a Championship! Which when you come down to it that is the goal as players and as fans...heck even the ball boys.

Championships runs...are made in December...always have and always will be!

Well how did our boy DA fare as a December QB?

His December quarterback rating was a mere 66.6 with 7 touchdowns and 8 interceptions.

Not a tell all just one of many reasons why I don't think DA had as good a season as his supporters claim he had.

What makes it worse is look at the opponents that we faced in December:
12/2 - Zona
12/9 - Jets
12/16 - Bills
12/23 - Bengals
12/30 - 49ers

A cupcake of a December that one could ever get!

Basically...I see DA remaining a Brown for the simple reason that other teams really won't be sold on him as a starting QB. At least not with great compensation of draft picks and long term starting QB contract. Mid-season, heck the talk was escalating from 1st round n 3rd round compensation to possibly seeking 2 first rounders via the Franchise tag. How far has DA dropped since then?

I have no agenda, my motive is strictly Browns...my fear is that we will waste some great Post Season Opportunities on DA. I don't see him as the one.

I love your selective use of stats. Maybe you should mention that one of the five games was played in a blizzard, while a second was where Palmer had a QB rating of only 44.

Also four of those picks came in one game. Now I'm not saying DA is a great QB. I really feel right now that he is about average. I just find it amusing how people who I believe are usually credible going to great lengths to try to justify things.

Browns Send Offers to 2 Top Free Agents

By TOM WITHERS – 17 hours ago

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Browns have made contract offers to quarterback Derek Anderson and running back Jamal Lewis, key players they hope to keep off the free-agent market.

A team spokesman confirmed proposals were sent to the representative for both players, but he could not provide details about the length or value of the deals.

Anderson, who won 10 games and threw 29 touchdown passes in his first season as a starter, is scheduled to become a restricted free agent on Feb. 29. If the Browns can't lock him up with a long-term deal before then, they can tender him with a one-year contract worth $2.52 million.

The club would then be able to match any contract offers made to Anderson by other teams or receive first- and third-round draft picks as compensation if the 24-year-old signs with another team.

Lewis rushed for 1,304 yards and nine TDs in his first season with the Browns, who signed him to a one-year, incentive-stuffed contract worth $5 million last March. Lewis, who can become an unrestricted free agent, has said he wants to stay with Cleveland.

However, keeping him could be a challenge as several other teams may attempt to sign the 28-year-old, who is coming off his most productive season since rushing for 2,066 yards for Baltimore in 2003.

Meanwhile, the Browns have yet to finalize a contract extension for coach Romeo Crennel. His agent, Joe Linta, met with general manager Phil Savage during this week's Senior Bowl activities in Mobile, Ala.

Crennel led the Browns to a 10-6 turnaround in his third season. He has two years remaining on a five-year package he signed in 2005. Savage recently said the Browns would "do right" by Crennel.

Focus on Romeo Crennel: NFL coaches ride ejector seat
Saturday, January 26, 2008
BY Steve Doerschuk
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

For incoming NFL head coaches, the distance between hello and goodbye leaves little room for conversation.

Omnipresent is the bottom line: Hurry up and win.

Ominous is the subtext: Get to a Super Bowl within five years or get out.

Ongoing talks to enhance Romeo Crennel’s contract must be viewed in a proper context.

They’re a “thank you” for going 10-6. They won’t prevent an “excuse you” if the Browns backslide to 6-10. Crennel could be paid off and sent out. At least, just about anyplace else, he would be.

Feb. 8 marks the three-year anniversary of Crennel’s hire, the night he won a third Super Bowl as New England’s defensive coordinator.

Just like that, he’s head-coaching establishment. Only 12 of the 32 NFL head coaches have been with their current teams longer than Crennel has been with the Browns.

Of those dozen, only Jacksonville’s Jack Del Rio and Cincinnati’s Marvin Lewis, both hired in 2003, have failed to take their teams to Super Bowls.

Every hire before ’03 — Bill Belichick, Tony Dungy, John Fox, Jon Gruden, Andy Reid, Mike Holmgren, Mike Shanahan and Jeff Fisher — has taken at least one team to a Super Bowl.

What does that tell you about where Crennel must go from here to still be there in 2010?

“Generally,” Crennel concedes, “if you don’t win enough games, you aren’t going to be here. If you show enough improvement and progress, then you have a chance to be here.”

More than one-third of the league’s current head coaches were hired in 2005 or 2006. Coaches in that group fit several profiles:

• Safe for now. Crennel and Green Bay’s Mike McCarthy had breakthrough seasons.

• Disappointing. Eric Mangini of the Jets and Sean Payton of the Saints went from the playoffs to the dumper.

• One the bubble. Buffalo’s Dick Jauron, Minnesota’s Brad Childress and Houston’s Gary Kubiak need a breakthrough season.

• Teetering. The Rams and 49ers went from mediocre to bad under Scott Linehan and Mike Nolan, respectively.

“Our goal” Kubiak said before facing the Browns late in the season, “is to become a playoff football team.

“If we keep battling for that, that is the toughest step we’ll ever take. But that’s why we’re all in this business.”

Or, sans playoffs and Super Bowls, why they’re out of business.

All but a few head coaches are one bad year away from the hot seat or the ejector seat. Eighteen head coaching jobs have come open since the end of the 2005 season.

This is why a hot young prospect like Josh McDaniels, New England’s 31-year-old offensive coordinator — and a former Crennel underling — can reject interview opportunities.

It’s not a matter of whether he will attract another interview.

It’s almost as if he could give it five years and pick his city.

Not to mention that we went three and two in those games, with one loss coming on a controversial endzone call at the end of the game (following a beautiful pass by DA).

No take on JL...? Qute possibly the most important decision of this off-season... Hum... If no JL, is it FA or a high or the first draft choice of this upcoming draft for a new RB toy...? No running game for the Browns or at least a significantly reduced one is a HUGE negative for the Browns in 2008. No matter whom the QB is...

Why the BQ stuff on this thread? DA is the starter next year unless the Browns get a 1st round and something pick or he gets severely injured... You know it and so does everybody else here...

Your acceptable draft picks for DA, scenarios 1,2,& 3 are valid. The rest are ... You know better than that...

If I was DA and the 3 year offer was for middle of the road NFL starters $$$ and much/most of it was guaranteed I would have already signed it...

The thing that scares me about the DA situation is the Tony Romo situation... From a contract stand point... The Cowboys waited and then ponyed up... The Browns may do the same or have to... If DA can play another year like last it will be worth it and it will probably happen.. If not...

I believe RAC deserves a guaranteed raise for the remainder of his existing contract. I don't agree that his contract should be extended. All in due time...

Chud and Garrett come to mind when I read this........The money these guys are making now...seems good enough to keep them where they are...Without the added stress and worry of the HC position...

Or like the article states...They may be waiting to choose their city....

Why the BQ stuff on this thread? DA is the starter next year unless the Browns get a 1st round and something pick or he gets severely injured... You know it and so does everybody else here...

I believe JL ends up back here .... hence no take on him .. this proccess just needs to play out with him .. these things VERY VERY VERY RARELY ever get done till push comes to shove ... and at the end of the day .. were a good fit for JL and hes a good fit for us so I think we get it down .... we just need to sort some things out such as # of years and options and stuff .. and none of that will be sorted out till near the deadline when both sides know what the true market is for JL ...

My brother ... oh my brother ... we see eye to eye on a quite a few things ... this one I am not sure if we could be further apart on ... *L* ..

BQ will be our starter from the first game on next year no matter where DA is .. unless BQ gets hurt ... BQ will bury him this off season ...

Quote:

Your acceptable draft picks for DA, scenarios 1,2,& 3 are valid. The rest are ... You know better than that...

Bro .. my 5th scenario is where I said it started to get murky for me .. and quite frankly I almost said murky at #4 ... so were actually pretty much in agreement on this one ...

we both would jump at 1 - 3 .. and then starting at 4 or 5 I would ahve to think about them .. U on the other hand would appearanlty dismiss them without any thought ... not that far apart ...

Quote:

The thing that scares me about the DA situation is the Tony Romo situation... From a contract stand point... The Cowboys waited and then ponyed up... The Browns may do the same or have to... If DA can play another year like last it will be worth it and it will probably happen..

Gonna be hard for DA to do from the bench ...

I hope all is well my brother ... WOOF WOOF WOOF to U and yours ...

"I love your selective use of stats. Maybe you should mention that one of the five games was played in a blizzard, while a second was where Palmer had a QB rating of only 44."

Ahhh...talk about selective Pdawg.

1. the Winter game with Buffalo didn't skew his stats. Don't know what his rating was for the game...I know his completion pct was low but did avg. around 15 yds per completion. But no turnovers.

2. Ahhh now the big fantasy game by DA supporters. The Bengal game.
Terrible wind how can we blame DA.
a. 3 out of his 4 INTs came in the 2nd n 3rd qtr...the strong altering winds were from the other directional. All 3 of those INTs came from the better throwing direction.
b. INT #1 a short pass 2-5 yards down field straight in front of DA...panicking a little as some pressure came through a horrible pass to his check down...INT and easy score by Bengals. Nothing to do with the wind.

c. INT #2 very next play - had a wide open KW2 breaking outside 10yds downfield with plenty of YAC...had to be visable as he foregone that option and instead chose BE in the same vision zone but around 10 yards further and with multiple coverage.
Terrible throw and terrible decision - again the pass didn't have any implications of being wind aided in its err.

d. INT #3 after a long opening drive with some nice passes by DA we are 1st and Goal on the 9 DA chooses to go for a KW2 who had 2-3 in coverage and hit one underneath coverage guy in the back to have it carome off and into the defenders hands.

He should have thrown that pass deep in the endzone where only KW2 could catch it or it goes out of the endzone...bad decision, bad throw none wind aided.

3. 4th INT...4th qtr heading in the bad direction...I think was definitely wind aided. As DA tried to hit an out on the left side about 10 yds down field and threw right into the teeth of the wind - fell way short and was INT'd. Game wise - Bodden INTs it on the next play and brings it one yard closer from where we left off...we did lose 12 seconds in the change of possesions. Its not about stats but sometimes the when and where comes into effect as well. Skewed cause of the wind???? BS

DA earned that rating whatever it was.

"I just find it amusing how people who I believe are usually credible going to great lengths to try to justify things."

Its called a Deadbate Pdawg...I'm going to what great lengths to justify things. I'm stating a fact...he digressed the 2nd half and he continued to digress in our 5 games in December - His play digressed....some out there if I talk technically they say sorry thats your opinion and I'm not buying....when I go and show numbers that they can digest I'm going to great lengths to try to justify things.

I'm called long winded by some...so I tried the short winded approach. Credibility? You think mine suffers by saying that DA digressed and especially digressed in the month of December with an unbelieveable easy schedule?

Laugh all you want and then call my post lacking credibility.

"Now I'm not saying DA is a great QB."

Well how bout being credible and state something pertinent in the equation here....Snow day and Palmer had a bad day too. Of course the Bengals having nothing to play for and were totally depressed as a team had nothing to do with it. It was probably one of our best defensive games although the DA backers will also make some fantasy about us losing the game because of our defense.

Funny I too feel DA is a very average QB...but I see one of stating why he feels that way...the other stating that I have no credibility for my statements. When yet all the satements I have made are factual. So tell me why you think DA is just Average? What makes you come to that conclusion. Surely it has to be something better than my incredulous efforts to show that DA's rather mediocre accomplishments in Dec against powder puff competition is the reason.

I see - all are allowed to join the deadbate except for me? Love the way that works.

You can join the growing crowd of those who loathe me...trust me I don't care one way or another.

But don't call my football Incredulous...not with what is brought to the table by others.

Oh one last thing...the quote - "His December quarterback rating was a mere 66.6 with 7 touchdowns and 8 interceptions."

those words that give you concern to call me on my credibility and mock me with a - sorry not mine. The are a direct quote from the staff writers of the Browns

Look down under the Highlighted - AREA OF CONCERN.

So I see me repeating an Area of Concern sited by Cleveland Browns Team Staff Writers - gives me a lack of credibility in your eyes. otay...but I think the is on you.

"Not to mention that we went three and two in those games, with one loss coming on a controversial endzone call at the end of the game (following a beautiful pass by DA)."

Don't even get me started with the Zona game - another bad game of DA's.

I see so in your eyes a 3-2 record in December against a Cupcake of a schedule is stellar in your eyes...

In other words if we play the worst of the worst All 16 games, 6 or more (15 games = 6 - what we do in that extra game well home we win away we lose )

I'm sorry I think in that post you are trying to mock me in I was talking about becoming a championship team. You talk to me about average and mediocrity well to each their own and what they covet...

"No take on JL...? Qute possibly the most important decision of this off-season."

I know sort of referred to Diam but hope you don't mind me replying.

JL
1. He expressed in detail his wish to be a Brown....also this is his twilight of his career and I think he considers us as a contender. If he is looking for a long term contract with mega bucks in signing bonuses...not sure if we will sign but I'm sure Savage will give him a good lucrative 3 year offer.

2. With a good Zone blocking scheme and there is no doubt in my mind as this OL remains intact it will only get better. Getting a successful RB is not that hard of a job.

3. Its a very strong draft class and we also know outside of picking up the blitzes (we usually give JL a rest anyways and put in Jason Wright) a rookie RB has the easiest transition into the NFL. We will have the opportunity of a pretty good RB rounds 2-5. Regardless of signing Jamal or not we could be investing in one regardless of our NEEDs...the value of BPA might be too great at some point. All depends who, what and where we have them rated at.

4. Next year is an equally strong draft class...pending on some Juniors coming out - again if Jamal is steadfast on a long term contract we might find it more prudent on signing a younger prospect like Turner who has fresher legs that should sustain a consistant production over the next 4-5 years. I think between 08 n 09 we will have some investment of RBs in the mix from the draft.

DA...hes not a guaranteed starter for 08. He is a guaranteed starter coming into the camps - ya think if nobody is interested in him this vests his hold onto the starting position??? He is destined to be our backup...his season didn't change anything in his future. We call him our starter and then offer him quality back up QB contract...sorry I don't care if its 5+mil a year for 3 years - 24 year old and you lock him up for 3 years??? You have nothing but big question marks about him...and no I don't think we came close to 5 mil a year in an offer.

RAC - liked him from day one. Don't mind the extension at all - he doesn't show any aging at all. Continuity is good and there is no rush to get it done as he is not in his Lame Duck season in 08...that is in 09. The fear of ticket prices going up as valid argument is rather absurd...considering they went up without the extension being made anyways....prices go up with the success and popularity of the team...not how much we spend on coaches and possibly buy outs if things don't work out.
