I'm glad you just saying no to every single team means that DA isn't going anywhere.

I would like him to talk to the Dolphins and Falcons about a possible 2nd round pick this year and 1st round pick next year.

That 'values' out to 2 2nd round picks...which depending on where the 1st round pick is next year could be fantastic for us (and Miami's 2nd round pick this year is really the last pick in the 1st round thanks to Belicheck cheating).

I would bet that if Anderson's agents are smart though, they are ringing the marketing bells in Minnesota. That would be the perfect situation for him (great OL, very good RB's)...they just need a WR to pan out and he'd be set.

According to the article, we've already tendered DA and will receive a 1st and 3rd round pick if he signs elsewhere. Come on, Dolphins!

I don't know how this will play out and I won't speculate w/out the facts.

I do have to say this though. It seems like most people think this is a win-win situation for the Browns. I agree that it could be, but if DA walks and realizes that "huge upside" that Savage talked about and BQ flops like a Couch, a McCown, a Losman, a Harrington, a Leaf, a Schuler, a George, a Boller, a Grossman, etc, etc, etc.............than the Browns could lose. And lose in a big way.

I hope he stays and the decision is made by performance, not on hope.

I agree with Spec here......seems as though some team has emerged and is seriously interested. Tampering is rampant throughout the league and my guess is that a team has already told DA or his agent that a better deal is out there.

Truthfully, 20 million is nothing for a starting QB over a 3 year period....especially one that made the pro bowl. There has to be a few teams out there that are more then likely in the 5 year, 30-35 million dollar range with 14-16 of it guaranteed. Unless DA or his agent believes there's something better, there's absolutely no other reason to leave 10 million guaranteed on the table. JMHO.

Ok,

lets say Miami does put an offer in for DA, then decides to trade the #1 to Dallas for their two #1s and Barber/Jones, how funny would it be for us to get our #1 back that we traded to Dallas last year.... Maybe it is me, maybe its the beer, but I think that would be funny.

That can't happen. Teams must use their picks in a tender situation, they can't trade their picks for other picks and then use those picks.

Anyone have any idea who the team who would give Anderson the offer sheet is? I've heard someone guess Carolina, and it makes sense I guess. I would've said the Vikings, but after thinking about it a while I think it's probably not them. Anyone hear anything that's not just speculation? All I've heard on boards like this the past 48 hours is how Anderson is looking like he's gonna test free agency and if he doesn't take the 3years/$20M then he's as good as gone, but I haven't heard the name of one potential suitor out there.

What about the Niners?

I know they have a lot invested in Alex Smith, but putting credence into him at this point is like plugging your ears and humming. Plus, they have a low first round pick if I'm not mistaken.

If feels foolish to speculate, but I'm bored.

They don't have their 1st round pick, so they can't meet the required compensation. IIRC a team must use their original pick, and not one acquired by a trade. So, if Miami were interested in DA, they could not trade their pick down and then use that lower one for compensation.

We would be able to work out different compensation with a team before they made an offer to DA, but Savage (as of now) said he has let it be known that he would not take less than a 1st and 3rd.

Draft position alone would likely rule out Miami and KC.

It won't be a first round pick. I'm guessing two 2nd rounders (2008 & 2009). That is, if he's traded.

Honestly, I think he's going all in with that hand.

We'll soon find out if we "win" DA for another year or "win" a 1st and 3rd

not really that good of a deal if you look at some of the other qb's

he's contract is equal to (if you double it) 6 years 40 mill 20 guaranteed

The same can be said for almost any good quarterback in the league. Not saying DA is Tom Brady, but his line struggled in the Super Bowl, so he did as well.

Not unless someone ELSE named OverToad said that, because I didn't.

The VALUE of the guy sitting in front of Woodson can change the teams idea of which direction it needs to go. More on that in a moment.....

What you're either unable or unwilling to see is that because the price to get Anderson is a 1st and a 3rd AND a high-end contract, he isn't the lead domino right now.

Bro .. theres an old saying that hardly ever pertains to U .. but in this case its the best advice I can give U ..

While the compliment part was favorable, the rest smells kinda like that chocolate-covered pig that came out from the wrong side of your barn door

Or maybe you mean I'm diggin' a deeper hole such as when I told you Anderson would be offered a $10+ million dollar guarantee to sign, and you told me I WAY OVERSHOT his value

You won't mind if I prove you wrong again, will you?

Quote:

With a quarterback who struggled at times in his first full year as a starter, the Vikings could be looking to bring in a little competition.

Or a lot.

Per Don Banks of SI.com, the Vikes are interested in Texans backup quarterback Sage Rosenfels. Rosenfels generated a passer rating of 84.8 last season, appearing in nine games. He was 4-1 and a starter.

Tarvaris Jackson was 8-4 as the starter in Minnesota last season. His passer rating of 70.8 barely put him on the right side of our patented Kordoza line.

Banks says that the Vikes have offered a third-round selection for Rosenfels. The Texans want a second-round pick.

Regardless of whether the deal goes down for a two or a three or not at all, the message to Jackson is clear -- one way or another, there will be competition for the starting job in 2008.

So the Vikings have now made my point for me.

Who would you rather have: Sage Rosenfels or Derek Anderson?

WHY are the Vikings after Rosenfels over Anderson? You need me to tell you, don't you *L*

Because Anderson's value........the 1st and a 3rd and his big contract..........are far tougher to swallow than the 3rd (or 2nd) that it'd cost to get a STOP-GAP QB.

Now......If Anderson could be snatched up for a 2nd round pick, you gotta know the Vikings would be all over him. I don't think there's a person on this board that would argue Rosenfels is a better prospect than Anderson.

Remember, A leads to B leads to C:

A: Savage hit Anderson with the highest Tender because he doesn't want to let him get away unless we get majorly compensated

B: The Viking aren't currently willing to pay what it'd cost to get Anderson because of the costs, despite the fact that he's the best QB on any market right now

C: David Dunn is being smart by waiting because if a deal for Rosenfels falls through, the Vikings, who are now stating they aren't willing to hand the job to Jackson, may be forced to increase what they pay in order to land a QB.

Sorry bro, but as we CLEARLY see, a lesser quarterback is getting more attention because Anderson's costs are prohibitive.

Summary: Anderson isn't the first player. Another stop-gap QB is.

Quit while I'm behind my 3-legged behind

You're 0 for the last 2. Care to try for the trifecta?

On a more serious note, if the Vikings have decided that Jackson isn't a lock for the job, they may throw up the white flag and go after Anderson if they can't land Rosenfels. To say it's out of the question is selling the entire situation short. If Dunn didn't feel as though there isn't a team out there that could conceivably make a move for Anderson, he'd have signed the offer and been done with it.

I get your point. You're stating that if a team commits to Anderson, they will make him the starter. I get that. What you aren't accepting is the very real possibility that a team may not be able to land Plan A, and be forced to overpay for the privelege of landing Plan B, which is Anderson.

I'm not saying they don't deserve big $$$, it's no secret that our team improved b/c of the improved OLine, Chud, and little else. I'm just saying that despite the sound of $20mil, it's not really a competitive offer.

Browns | Savage says if Anderson doesn't accept offer they won't bring him back
Thu, 28 Feb 2008 14:44:09 -0800

ESPNews reports Cleveland Browns general manager Phil Savage said that if QB Derek Anderson does not accept the team's three-year, $20 million deal, the team will not re-sign him.

web page

Yeah...That's NOT what he said...

Want to see ANOTHER instance of horrid media reporting?

Check it out:

Savage: Anderson almost out of time with Browns

BEREA, Ohio (AP) - The Browns want quarterback Derek Anderson back, but are prepared to begin the Brady Quinn era if no deal can be reached.

Cleveland has tendered Anderson a one-year offer for $2.5 million in 2008, and also made a three-year offer - reportedly worth $20 million, with $10 million guaranteed.

If Anderson declines the multiyear offer and becomes a restricted free agent Friday, it's unlikely he'll be back, general manager Phil Savage said Thursday.

"If he's willing to take the walk out there, there's got to be some indication there's something at the end of the rainbow," Savage said.

If Anderson signs with another team, Savage said the Browns wouldn't be able to match the offer. Instead, they'd take the first- and third-round pick draft picks they'd receive as compensation and turn to fan favorite Quinn as the starting quarterback.

"If Derek wants to be a Brown and really wants to stay here in Cleveland and play with the players that are on our team, then he can do that rather easily," Savage said. "We can look in the mirror and know we put a strong offer out there.

"But he's earned the right to get to this point because of his play last year. We're in a good situation either way."

Savage said the team's position isn't an ultimatum. But with free agency around the corner, the team has a budget with Anderson's three-year deal and another without it.

A message seeking comment was left with Anderson's agent, Mark Humenik.

Cleveland is desperate for help on the defensive line and at linebacker, and Savage expects to target those positions immediately in free agency.

The 24-year-old Anderson threw 29 touchdown passes and 19 interceptions last season and went 10-5 after taking over as the starter in Week 2. He made the Pro Bowl as an alternate.

Quinn, from Notre Dame, was limited to just eight passes as a rookie after the Browns traded their first-round draft pick in 2008 to take him with the No. 22 pick last April. He would remain the backup if Anderson agrees to the three-year deal.

"There's a comfort level that Brady can walk in, administrate the offense and do even more than that," Savage said. "He does have some mobility, is physically strong and has a good arm. The mental part is going to end up being his greatest strength."

If Anderson leaves, the Browns would be in the market for an experienced backup, Savage said.

Talk about putting words into Savage's mouth

Short of breaking the bank by rolling the dice on Anderson, you can rest easier knowing that the FO did all they possibly could to keep Anderson here. In that way, I agree it's a "win-win" situation, because if we ARE going to lose Anderson, we'll have landed his replacement a year early, and gained some salary cap relief as well as an extra 1st day selection.

The only other options were to give Anderson a HUGE contract that he clearly doesn't deserve, Franchise Tag him which, again, is something he doesn't deserve, or trade Quinn, which would be extremely premature.

My $.02...

I'm vaguely excited about DA getting the tender. It opens up a lot of interesting opportunities.

Also, I wouldn't count the Lions out of the DA sweepstakes. Here's why:

1) The honeymoon with Kitna is OVER! A lot of last year's meltdown was laid on his doorstep by the media, fans, and to a lesser extent, coaches and management. A lot of people believe they need a new QB.

2) What kind of offense will Colleto run? I really don't know, but I wouldn't count out using DA in it. All I know is that I was at Purdue when Colleto was the coach there, and it was not good.

3) Matt Millen is enough of a cowboy to make this move. He can't make himself any less popular here. He can pull the trigger on this and say, "I made a move to improve this team, bringing in a winner and a football player." That's his mantra now, he wants real "football players".
It would also take the pressure off him having another first round bust. I think 15th would be a very nice slot to have!

SAGE TALKS END

Judd Zulgad of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports that talks between the Vikings and the Texans regarding a trade that would have sent quarterback Sage Rosenfels from Houston to Minnesota have ended.

The Vikings offered a third-round pick; the Texans wanted a second-round pick.

The Vikes could now pursue J.P. Losman, who has asked to be traded out of Buffalo.

Guess they figured they gave up a 2nd rounder for Matt.... and Sage played about the same level as Matt when he was in there... that they both equal 2nd rounders....

I dunno... would have taken the 3rd.

I agree with your first reply completely!

I believe there is a within the next two hours, last ditch contact offer from the Browns to Da and a counter offer waiting back for the Browns...

Either way none one here has a clue as to what did, will or may happen... That one of the reason we all enjoy this so much... The overall range of the possiblities discussed on this topic and most others is NICE!!! SWEET for the most part...

Outside of some here who believe their personal opinions and prognostication hold more merit than any others here... We all have agendas...

No matter what happens the Browns hold the leverage and are in the drivers seat... Either DA signs or he get 2.5 mil next year and pizzes away an nice fatty, (the supposed 3 year deal)... Or he roles the dice on the chances he nuts up again next season for the possibilty of a bigger fatty from someone else or possibly the Browns... Either way the Browns win this year having 2 young guns under 25 and next with some additional high picks for some more D studs and a solid vet QB, or a two year proven high quality NFL QB/DA... Whats not to like about this whole sits???

Despite the investment, Schaub is still unproven. He had a very rough first season and fought with several injuries. Rosenfels showed to be a competent short-term guy, and he's familiar now with the offense.

I've the feeling that they are hoping the Vikings can't find anyone else and cave to the 2nd rounder.

Getting back to Anderson, if Rosenfels is worth a 3rd round pick to one team (a 2nd rounder to another) then it's well within belief that a team would be willing to do something with Anderson. Likely? I won't say that, but it's suddenly possible. All it takes is one, hehe.

Oh I agree 100%.... Matt played well at times this year, but until the Texans invest in an OL and running game they will continue to be almost good. Matt was quick with his reads and threw very well... but still had pressure all year.

Getting back to Anderson, if Rosenfels is worth a 3rd round pick to one team (a 2nd rounder to another) then it's well within belief that a team would be willing to do something with Anderson. Likely? I won't say that, but it's suddenly possible. All it takes is one, hehe.

I didn't look at it from that perspective... does make things interesting.

What about the Niners?

They don't have their 1st round pick, so they can't meet the required compensation. IIRC a team must use their original pick, and not one acquired by a trade. So, if Miami were interested in DA, they could not trade their pick down and then use that lower one for compensation.

We would be able to work out different compensation with a team before they made an offer to DA, but Savage (as of now) said he has let it be known that he would not take less than a 1st and 3rd.

Draft position alone would likely rule out Miami and KC.

I believe the wording is a pick equal to or better than their original pick. So they can use a traded for pick, it's just that that pick can't be lower than their original.

Then again I see a lot of websites of people supposedly in the know that Miami might trade down with Dallas and then use one of those picks to sign Anderson. I don't believe that is allowed but what do I know and these guys are so-called gurus/experts.

Dude .. I guess I'm even dumber than U thought ... cause for the life of me I can tunderstand why U are saying any team would have a #1 choice of a BUM OFF THE STREET (whats available for free is JUNK) .. and a #2 choice of a guy that will cost them a 1st rnd pick ... that MAKES NO SENSE ... I don't care how u spin it ..

if you;ve all ready lowered yourself to go to a guy off the street as opposed to going for DA and giving up your #1 ... I have no clue how losing "your" guy off the street makes giving up your #1 and going after DA that much more appealing than choosing another bum off the street ..

it is U thats having the comprehension problem here ...

and oh by the way .. this is one of your best spin jobs ever ... and thats a pretty big pile of cra .. err I mean spin ...

is it true U hired a real estate agent in Never Never Land ....
