IMO, Quinn will be starting this year. DA will be traded. We'll get a couple decent picks for him in this years draft. I truly feel this is what will happen. And I wouldn't mind it either. I like DA but he is too inconsistent. (yeah, there's something you haven't heard before huh?). I don't think there would be a drop off with Quinn coming in.
How in the world can you fix something... If you don't know how it's supposed to work?

"Inside our building people are genuinely excited that we have both quarterbacks," Savage said. "I don't worry about what happens outside the building. . . . I know people get their heart set on first- and third-round picks, but who are [the fans] going to look at if we let DA go and then we lose a quarterback and we're running a single wing and we go 2-14? I don't want to take that chance."
I'm too lazy to dig up the half or so other quotes that Phil's made that indicate the DA's staying. Savage is generally not coy.
And also, not to read too much into sensationalism (Phil's history with JaMarcus comes to mind), but Savage was on board when Anderson was drafted, he picked him off of Baltimore, and there have been more than murmurs that he really favored Anderson over Frye...anyone not think that Savage is particularly high on the kid?
For a city that watches QB's go down more than Paris Hilton, why are people so eager to shed an easy-to-maintain insurance policy?

Phil, give it a rest already. People want him ran out of town, they don't want to believe what Savage actually says.
For the life of me I can't figure out how some people think he will be traded draft day. Why wouldn't have we worked out that trade now. For that matter why would we offer him any contract at this point?

One of them will be gone after next year. Imo DA will be the starter game 1 and will have a chance to show that he has improved...........because if he hasn't against the Ds we'll be facing this year he'll get eaten alive. If he has then folks we have our QB and we are set for a SB run. However, if he hasn't then BQ will get a chance to show what he's got and hopefully he's the answer.
Imo there is noway that this goes on longer than this year.........in 09 one of them will be gone............Quinn because DA has improved, shown he's the man, and BQ wants his shot...........or DA becuase he failed to improve, and we don't want to pay a backup that kind of coin........jmho.
I just hope this doesn't turn out like the TC/KH crap, but you can tell it will. Both camps are lining up behind "their" guy, and the BS has already begun on talking about off the field stuff. Honestly who gives a crap how many commercials BQ does if he does his job??? Jesus!! Who cares what either one of these guys do except on the practice field and on Sundays.....jmho. I'm looking for the best QB not the best guy, person, or friend. I could give a rats butt if DA/BQ is a better person than the other, unless it effects Sundays, and i have seen no evidence ON THE FIELD (you know where it actually counts) that shows that either one has been anything but proffessional.

First off, I was agreeing with someone else who called it stupid. If you guys feel you have to verbally spank someone, try the guy who said it first. Second, maybe I should have phrased it differently. My point is not the thread being stupid, even though that is how I said it. But I was really trying to say was trading Quinn was stupid. Sorry if I confused you Daman, I know my intelligence is way below yours As for the thread being voluntary, like I said before, I was agreeing with another poster, and frankly maybe you should heed your own advice. If you feel all you can do is add a sarcastic response and a few 's, maybe you ought to just overlook my posts any time you see one, as it seems you somehow enjoy taking shots at my posts. You've done it in the past and are doing it again. I used to respect you as a poster, but lately I'm not so sure.

I understand your point, but a team may need to see what happens in the draft to determine what course they need to follow.

ahhh for those who think this is a stupid thread, please point out where I said we should trade Quinn ...... I ask what you thought would be fair compensation for him IF we did trade him.
To you GM, I honestly apoligize for my response. I misread what you were trying to say.
I guess IF we did trade him, I would have to agree with a 1st and 3rd, or a 1st and a starting quality player, hopefully a MLB.
Again, I would like to point out that when I said it was stupid (the thread) I was just replying to someone else who made that comment. No disrespect intended towards you.

I do, when I see a thread that I think it stupid, I don't respond to it.... seems simpler than telling the world that I think it's a stupid thread

Dude, get real! I am the only one who mentioned commercials. And you obviously took it way out of context. And save the BS about BQ being treated unfairly. Jesus! You guys have made up so much crap about how bad DA is that it sickens me. The BS about being inaccurate. The BS about having no upside. The BS about not having any touch. Get freaking real. Y'all have been wrong all along and I am damn glad Savage isn't an idiot and buys into all the BS that this board spews.
Jesus BigWillie........you are complaining about BQ getting ragged on?????? The guy hasn't done squat, except go 3 for 8 and most have proclaimed him to be better than DA. While DA has things made up about him on an everyday basis.
And you have the nerve to get offended? Please!
Check this out, BigWillie...............10 and 5! 7 and 0 at home. Nearly 30 TD passes. And all I hear from the dolts on this board and the ignorant media is how bad he was.
And the crazy part is that most of you are the same guys who defended Timid Couch on a regular basis. *L* I mean.........really man............

Something smells rotten with those statements. The voice in my head is telling me that he's posturing for a DA trade. If we go into training camp with both QB's...you can't go telling BQ that there's no QB competition. I'm certain he would be told just the opposite.

How does 4 of 7 with a TD sound? That's what his numbers should be...but BE didn't catch the TD. Or 4 of 8 with a TD...but KW2 dropped the TD (while standing still). - And even at 4 of 7 it wouldn't tell us a whole lot...we would need to have seen more. But we saw a lot of DA. A lot of good...and a lot of bad. We need to see less bad from the QB position.

I would've expected an astute poster to point out that he could be setting BQ up for a trade.

LOL..............let me guess. When DA was the QB, the WRs never dropped a pass and in fact, made great catches from poor throws?
Actually, I have read that crap on here. Like I said before. I'm glad Savage doesn't buy into the nonsense that pervades this board. Thank God!

Huh?
Why trade either at this point? Neither has proven to be a franchise QB and neither has proven to be terrible. Why not keep them until we are sure?
I do know one argument for not keeping them both.

Of course passes were dropped. But nobody made any miraculas catch for BQ in his short tenure at QB...it was more the opposite...
It's too little a test sample to argue over anyhow. We need to see more of BQ with the 1st string.

With the improvements we've made over the last couple of days, I'm on that bandwagon. It's just that Savage's comments do not ring properly to me. There's something up his sleeve for the QB position. He's got something in mind or my name isn't 'what's his name'.

Come on people, I sometimes get the feeling people are upset just because we won' t have anything to watch on the first day of the draft. Vers, and others can problably tell you I was one of the 1st on the "trade DA" band wagon, but get real..........We are set up pretty damn well right now. We have a QB that some on here think many teams in the NFL would have given up a 1st round draft pick for (not to mention a 3rd to boot) and another QB that most seem to think should be our starting QB next yr. Most teams in the NFL would give up quit a bit for a situation like ours. Right now my opinion on the matter doesn't really matter. I don't care what Phil says on "press" day.......the BEST QB will start for us next yr.....wether it's the "8 million" dollar man or the "Heir apperent", doesn't really matter. Phil wants to win now and the 3 yr. contract shows that.....he is giving Anderson every chance to show "he is the man', and if he doesn't.......well......a three yr. contract is very team freindly. Quinn isn't going anywhere THIS YEAR and apperently neither is Anderson........ this is not a bad thing people. I'll take good odds right now that the loser of this QB derby is not with the team the following yr. and that we get a decent draft pick out of it to boot. I am NOT an Anderson fan people,.....to be honest......I think Quinn will beat him out in camp this yr. and will be our opening day starter. But I am NOT going to complain about how this came about.......Phil is making sure we get it right, and if Anderson does beat out Quinn, well.....that means our Browns are winning and I am NOT going to complian about that either.

Yeah, the DA crowd doesn't need to shut up, do they? That's the thing with you, Vers...you take cheap shots at people with a different view of things. BOTH sides need to just STOP it.
Whatever Phil is up to, I personally think both sides of the QB debate need to zip it. I'm sick of hearing it, and I know you guys are sick of talking about it. We have TWO QB's right now. A lot of teams wish they had our so called problem.
Anything can happen, and probably will. Let's just wait and see.

considering the thick smoke screen phil had up this offseason, i wouldn't expect him to stay true to his word during the draft. either one of these guys could be moved, although its not likely to happen. the first name on phils draft sheet would have to be there for him to pull the trigger, and yet im not convinced he's not happy with where we set as it is.
only downside of quinn is he thinks he is gods gift to browns fans....

j/c... thought this would go well here: Quinn: Focused on improving Steve King, Staff Writer 03.01.2008 He is going to continue to work hard and improve. He'll continue to compete. And he'll most definitely be readyto do whatever he can to help the Browns become a winner. That was the gist of what Browns quarterback Brady Quinn said early Saturday afternoon before he began a two-hour stint posing for photos with hordes of fans as part of a promotion at the annual Cleveland Auto Show at the I-X Center. It was his first public apperance since the club agreed to terms with Pro Bowl quarterback Derek Anderson. Displaying the maturity of a veteran far beyond his years, Quinn would not allow himself to be drawn into any quarterback controversy talk. "I'm not really focusing on any controversy," Quinn said. "I'm just concentrating on everything that I'm doing to get myself better to lead the Browns." He said the he thinks the Browns bringing back Anderson is "good for the team. I'm just looking forward to the competition. We'll be able to push each other. "That kind of competition will only breed better quarterback play throughout the season." The Browns were hoping last year that Quinn would be part of that competition right from the start wth Anderson and Charlie Frye in training camp and the preseason. But Quinn never really got that chance when he missed the first part of camp as the Browns worked to sign him to a contract. When the season began, Frye was the starter, but Anderson replaced Frye in the second quarter of the season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Anderson then took over the job for good when Frye was traded to the Seattle Seahawks two days later. Quinn became the backup and the Browns re-signed veteran Ken Dorsey to serve as No. 3. He played in just one series all year -- at the end of the first half of the final game against the San Francisco 49ers -- and threw eight passes. This time, Quinn plans to be with the club from the start of camp, which will be a huge benefit. "It will be nice," he said. "It will be a good experience, something fresh, something new that I wasn't able to experience last year." One thing, though, that Quinn did experience last season was that fact he wasn't playing. It was the first time since his early days in high school that he was not No. 1. He had started all four years at Notre Dame, a rare feat for any quarterback at a major college program. He admitted that the inactivity on game days "is a little different. It takes some adjusting to get used to." Home Page 1) I do not see anything happening with these two guys other than going into the season with both of them, Anderson as the starter, Quinn as the backup. 2) I believe that the competition BQ refers to is competition in the sense that they will push each other to improve, NOT for the starting job. 3) We have two starting calibre QBs. If we were to go into the the season with only one, and he went down, we would then have none. I don't understand what is so hard to understand about keeping them both. 4) Anderson has proven he can run the offense very effectively. BQ will not be harmed by sitting behind him and learning for a while longer. 5) Phil has stated repeatedly that he is not trading DA, almost to the point of anger. If not anger, then at the minimum incredulity, which is what I am experiencing regarding this topic. JMHO.

Something smells rotten with those statements. The voice in my head is telling me that he's posturing for a DA trade. If we go into training camp with both QB's...you can't go telling BQ that there's no QB competition. I'm certain he would be told just the opposite.
Considering I'm skeptical by nature, and always looking for the angle when someone tells me something, you'd expect me to agree with you.
But I can't.
My problem is common sense. That isn't to say you or others don't have any, but rather from a pure football standpoint, I can't imagine why we'd want to trade him if we went at him so hard as to keep uppin' the offer.
Anderson is due a payment on this deal April 1st. So we COULD trade him before that point and not get hurt cap-wise. My problem stems from the fact that if we really just wanted to trade him, we could have simply left the Transition tag on him and traded him then. The truth is that if we went that route, he'd have been more attractive to other teams than if he signed the deal he did.
Remember, a team that trades for DA is making a draft pick investment in him that's long-term, not short-term. The contract DA signed is short-term, not long-term. To be blunt, you don't drop a 1st and a 3rd on a guy and take a contract that's only 3-years. If you make that kind of deal for a guy, you want to work out your own long-term deal, which is something that would have been done if he only had the transition tag against him.
But what if Savage was lying, and is willing to take less than a 1st and a 3rd? He wouldn't have gone to all the trouble of locking Anderson up first if that's the route he wanted to go. Sure, he'd have locked him down the the highest Tender, but he'd have made it known that Anderson could have been had.
Vette, I won't rule out the possiblity that he could be traded, but I think such a move is the longest of longshots, and to be honest, I think it'd be the dumbest thing we could do as an organization.
As far as letting Quinn think there's competition........there isn't, not this year. Forget Crennel and what he says. It's always been his BS line that every job is open for competition That's a load that EVERY coach in the world has to say in order to make guys work hard. Anderson EARNED the first crack at the job by throwing 29 TD's, winning 10 games, having a passer rating north of 80 for the first time since this team came back, and earning the respect of his teammates. He DIDN'T earn a huge contract because he completed a lowly 56% of his passes, threw 19 INT's, and struggled down the stretch.
So what has Quinn done to earn an even shot against Anderson?
Nothing. Both QB's are the same age, but to HONESTLY believe that Quinn could have done what Anderson did is really pushing the long odds, and to think that Quinn will be better than Anderson's body of work is reaching.
Remember the horse? The one that MUST come before the cart? That horse's name is "Make the right choice at QB." The best way to do that is to give Anderson a crack at keeping the job he earned, while having Quinn as the insurance policy in case Anderson fails. To go through all this posturing and deception when he could have simply traded DA without it doesn't make any sense to me.
Again, I'd urge you and everyone else to REALLY look at the contract Anderson signed. The guaranteed money only happens in the 1st year. If Anderson doesn't cut it, he becomes the best backup in the league, trade-bait, or a nice insurance policy in case Quinn falters, which like it or not, is a real possibility. Because of those realities, it doesn't make any sense to trade Anderson, especially when all the good veteran backup QB's will be off the market. Dorsey as the #2 QB? PuhLEASE
***Gordon, I really didn't think you could be this stOOpid, but you exceeded my expectations. Wussy. Manziel, see Josh Gordon. Dumbass.***

You're telling me, in all honesty, that during the mini-camps and training camp that Brady outperforms DA that he shouldn't get a shot? Not saying it happens. Put opinions aside. I want to win. The coaches want to win, and the FO wants to win. So how could you or anyone else possibly sit there and say that theres nothing Brady can do to win the job?
DA didn't exactly shine in training camp. Nor did he in preseason. At all. Frye was garbage, and DA couldn't even take the job from him. If he looks like that again, I can't see how the hell you can hold Quinn back.
You play the game to win.
It's a business. I don't give a damn about a contract and who's making more. The best guy needs to play. Period. You give DA the starting spot, watch 'em in camp, and see how they play it out. Just like last year.

i think you answered you own question.
DA didn't do well in camp but had a fairly decent year. thus, we've seen just how well a performance in camp/preseason translates to the real season. so if quinn does outperform DA, DA still has more starts under his belt. this simply translates to experience. hes seen defenses and is learning to read them. he'll be watching tape of his performance last year and should be able to build. basically, he has gone thru the motions and is a bit more mentally prepared going into this season than the last. quinn, unfortunately, has none of that is is still a rookie in a starting role sense.
so what if the roles are reversed from your proposition? DA's starting up the learning curve and the chip on quinns shoulder (or whatever reason) makes him perform poorly....should we trade him? even i dont think so...he's got alot to learn. he has the tools to be a good QB, but his toolbox is short a few wrenches and sockets. if we can make the case that DA will regress, its entirely possible that BQ will as well. he's no golden boy (so far anyway), he's human like everyone else. but to not consider the possibility that quinn can falter is only setting yourself up for disappointment and/or disaster.
DA has earned the spot....BQ hasn't. you dont sit a guy that took you to your best season (in the new era) because he has a bad camp....because he already displayed that camp performance says very little about what you can do in the season.

I'll answer you with a quote from......myself.........in this very thread on page 2.
Quote:
OverToad: Now, as to being relegated to the bench if he clearly outplays Anderson...........that won't happen. If he clearly is the guy, you can bet that the team won't hesitate to leave him in there. Why? Because paying Anderson is a done deal, and won't hinder us once the season has started. Remember, it's not as though we've dedicated ourselves to Anderson beyond this season. If Quinn outplays him and takes the job, Anderson is on the fast-track out of town come the offseason, and even possibly before the trading deadline.
I'm not sure which direction you think I took, but it's incorrect. Let me sum it up as bluntly and clearly as I can:
It's Anderson's job to lose, as it should be. That doesn't mean Quinn can't win it, again, as it should be.
***Gordon, I really didn't think you could be this stOOpid, but you exceeded my expectations. Wussy. Manziel, see Josh Gordon. Dumbass.***

The truth is that if we went that route, he'd have been more attractive to other teams than if he signed the deal he did.
I don't know if I agree with that.
DAs contract is nice, but it isn't a mega deal. About on Par with Quinns.
Had a team traded to get him on the tender contract, it would have but the leverage in DAs hand. The team would be pressured to get him signed with nothing other then a franchise tag to use...and the qb tag is pretty high. I don't think qbs mind too much having that tag placed on them.
I understand your points, and I do see that. I am just saying to maybe help you see there was some reason why getting DA inked was of value apart from the fact we just might want him to be our qb for a while.

I will add this...I don't think DA can lose it based on camp. It will be lost based on how he preforms in regular season games.
It would take some pretty bizarre happenings for the job to be lost before game 1.

Ya' know...With alot of folks saying we MUST GET THIS RIGHT...Why is anyone screamin' about Savage doing it the ONLY way to actually get it right???...That amazes me...
We're sitting in a perfect world right now with this...
By the midway point of 2008 we will KNOW where we stand...And I'd just about Guarantee it that both of these guys will NOT be Browns come 2009...
Go Browns!!!

I agree. That decision is the most critical decision we will have to make.
In the end one will be gone. We have to make sure we keep the right guy.

DnD...we will likely see both QBs playing in the early part of the season.
The most productive at putting points on the board while limiting mistakes will likely be the ultimate starter for the rest of the season.
Having two good, young QBs is a good thing for the Browns, but remember, anything can happen and one might be gone at any time unless Anderson has a no trade clause in his new contract.
If anyone knows the terms of Anderson's contract concerning the trade issue, let us know...thanks.
If there is one thing Browns fans should know now, Savage is unpredictable...remember Frye.

I agree. But this is the team that benched their starter 1.5 quarters into Game 1 and traded him 2 days later. So bizarre, yes. Impossible, no.
And I agree that one of the guys will be gone after 2008. Too many (potential) problems with both if that doesn't happen, IMO.

mac- I don't see them both playing early in the season. The job, this year more than any other, has to be firmly decided coming out of camp.
Now if the chosen one falters after a few games, they may make a quick switch but I don't see how they will both be given playing time once the real games commence.

Quote: Either that, or perhaps he is trying to shut the loud-mouth BQ crowd up?????
Yeah, the DA crowd doesn't need to shut up, do they?
What DA crowd? Me? That's not a crowd.
While there are posters that like DA, most are afraid to admit it. *L*
Michelle, no one on here is really bad-mouthing BQ. What grief is he getting? On the other hand, every time you open up a thread, there are people who are taking shots at DA.
Can't you understand how "old" that gets to those of us who actually think the guy is pretty damn good?
The comparison you made is invalid, because the "DA crowd" doesn't rag on BQ on almost every single thread in Pure Football. If they did, you guys would be screaming bloody murder. And I wouldn't blame you, because I know how freaking annoying it is to read garbage about a QB that you actually think is good.
I'm saying this............will the BQ crowd please lay off w/the constant attack on DA? Please?

Do you guys think Phil thinks we can have a shot at the Super Bowl now with a good defense and 2 qb's that can get the job done in case 1 goes down? I think he want's it NOW. I would still love to see a DB or another LB added to the defense. I was against the DA contract at first but look where they are heading. Look at the bright side we could still be talking about Charlie Frye

Frankly, I think they may lay off if you stop the constant whining about it. But that's just me.......
