Corner is one of those positions where experience isn't that much of an advantage. Either you can cover or you can't.
I don't think we will suffer at all with Wright and McDonald playing the edge. Actually, I think we got better.
Holly is decent in the nickle role....then we have Kenny Wright, Mike Adams and a few others....be it they are a step down.
A big question is Baxter. The guy is still on the roster. If he can come back with anything, he is a addition...I am thinking he might do ok at safety. We did play Pool at corner for a bit which might not be out of the question.
At safety, a guy to watch is Nick Sorenson. He was a late pick-up last year. Now that he has been in place a while, he might have enough to bump Pool.
In the end I think the two pups on the outside won't be a liability.
Maybe draft a guy if we have a chance or possibly sign a second tier FA.
Baxter is a free agent. We'd have to resign him.
Adams is technically a safety, isn't he?
I dunno Peen. That looks pretty thin to me. Phil has to be working on something to solidify the corners, because I personally don't feel real comfortable right now. There's a lot of potential there, but not a lot of substance. We saw some nice things from McDonald in limited appearances, and Wright got better during the season. I was very high on Wright going into the draft, and was ecstatic when we moved up to get him. Holly is a nickel back, and Kenny Wright is a pure back up. We need at least 1 more corner brought in to make me feel more comfy.

Thanks for the kind words at the beginning of your post. I appreciate it. Quote:
If I understand Vers' take correctly, he just doesn't believe that Pool has the instincts and that won't improve no matter how much time you give a player.
You got part of it right. I think he has the worst instincts I have ever seen. However, I am not saying he can't improve. He can improve his film study, recognition, etc and it would help him on the field. I am not saying that will happen, but it is possible.
Lefty said Pool improved as the year went on. I have to disagree w/that. He was the same at the end of the year as he was at the beginning of this year, and even at the end of last year when he played for an injured Russell, which is coincidentally when that defense took a huge turn for the worse.
People don't bash him much because they don't see him getting burned. I say that is misleading, because he is rarely around the ball. He is out of position way too often. It just takes him too long to react. Zero instincts.
I wonder how many tackles he had? Compare those numbers to Jones, who was paired w/Pool in a two deep zone for most of the year. I have no idea on the numbers, but I bet Jones had way more. And no.......Jones did NOT play closer to the LOS this year.
Btw..........I hope Pool turns it around. I'm not saying he can't. I just think it is doubtful. He is big. He is fast. He is strong. He is a good athlete. However, I think he is football dumb. It just takes him too long to know where the ball is going. Mr. Lost in Space.
PS: I better clarify this. I'm not saying he is a dumb person, as in ignorant. I have no idea.

Chris Crocker.
Wow I remember when he went there I was pretty mad, I liked the guy. I remember that he had some hard hits from blitzing, and they playing them back though replays. I think he still started in Atlanta so even for experience that would be nice.

Peen: I liked Justin Hamilton, but we cut him. Can't figure that one out.
I tried to find out where Hamilton is now.. I must be missing it but it doesn't look as if he's on any team at the moment!
hamilton was "waived/injured." I remember there being some sort of drama about why he was cut instead of being put on injured reserve, and the FA saying somethign about him preferring to be waived than put on IR. it didn't make any sense to me. maybe his injury was career ending? If It wasn't, I would be happy to see him back.
Re Crocker: i think he'd be a good signing for us. He was a good effort guy, had good speed (anyone remember him running down that punt returner?), a good ST guy, hard hitter, and now has good experience. We could do a lot worse as a number three safety, and he can play corner as well.
I'm going to miss Bodden. I really liked him. He had some injuries, and perhaps he'll never recover. But by the end of the year last year he was playing really well, and if he recovers fully, he's a damn good corner.

Funny you should mention Crocker. I thought of him, too.
I know a guy whose daughter went to school with Crocker and I know he liked it here. Maybe he'd like to come back. I always thought he was a decent player.

j/c Just saw we lost Ricardo Colclough. Panthers come to terms with free agent CB/KR Ricardo Colclough 1 day ago CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Carolina Panthers agreed to terms with free-agent cornerback and kick returner Ricardo Colclough on a two-year, US$4-million deal Saturday. The move gives the Panthers an extra defensive back and perhaps some help with their struggling kickoff return unit. The 25-year-old Colclough was Pittsburgh's second-round pick in 2004. The Steelers waived him midway through last season before he was picked up by Cleveland. He has played in only six games the past two seasons. Article Only article I could find was from the Canadian Press.

OK ... here's a name for ya .......
Chris Crocker. What about Betty Crocker? Why do U want a finesse safety who gets knocked on his can when in run support? I saw enough to know he's not the type of D i want here..

Because he can play the pass quite well ....... especially in a deeper zone .... which is something beyond our current FS.

i'm extremely concerned with our CB corps. dont count Holly or Bax either. (see ESPN's FA tracker: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/index)and there isnt crap out there left that is more than an average stop-gap. This to my knowledge, leaves us with 3 corners to go with our safeties: Eric Wright Brandon McDonald Kenny Wright

Crocker was not brought back by the Falcons because he was playing horrendously in deep cover.

As many posters have acknowledge, our CB situation is our team's weakest link at this point, with a depth chart of:
Eric Wright Brandon McDonald Daven Holly Kenny Wright
The remaining FA market is also extremely weak, with the top free agents consisting of Fernando Bryant, William James and Ty Law, who all have major flaws/age problems.
So what would you do to acquire a starting caliber cornerback, or would you sit still and wait for next year?
Three intriguing options out there are:
Lito Sheppard - A top ten corner when he can remain healthy, the second clause remains a major question mark. He's a better Leigh Bodden. Would cost high draft picks next year.
DeAngelo Hall - Wants out of Atlanta, and will almost certainly be traded. But would definitely require a first round pick next year, alongside other things. Do you part with say, first and second round picks next year, thinking of a young DeAngelo Hall (24) as next years first round pick?
PacMan Jones - Hear me out. If he gets reinstated, I wouldn't hesistate to offer him a deal, i'll even offer him a long term deal with a good signing bonus, because he's that good of a player. All you need to do is make sure that the contract is strongly worded to protect the team when he messes up.
And yes, i mostly consider that a when. However, say we give him a 50% chance of making it through the year. He's never been a clubhouse cancer, and he'd certainly help this team out whenever he is on the field. Language should be able to be constructed which makes him cost almost nothing in the event that he messes up again (would even help our salary cap, as likely to be earned bonus's would go back onto next years cap). Throwing a 6th or 7th round pick in a sign and trade, will net us much more quality than we'd get from that point in the draft.
This is all, of course, if he gets reinstated, which i'm not at all convinced of.
If you're Phil what do you do? Would you pull the guns on any of these deals, or sit tight with what we have now?

I'd be looking to add alittle veteran depth going into the season if possible,
There isnt many out thier right now, but it's early, and the longer we wait the lower the price for Law and others will go down, an there are always a few DB who end up being salary cap victims, we dont need long term deals from these guys just next year, I'm sure Phil hasnt over looked this need, just dosent wanna rush into doing something until he have covered all areas.

It's not a move I'd be against.
I mean, as I see it, he's not a lockeroom cancer. He can be signed to a contract well below his talent level, and a smart team can easily write the contract to protect us when/if he screws up.
I'm not sure where it can really hurt the team? Besides from a public relations standpoint maybe?

Just say 'No' to all those guys. I don't feel like looking for it right now, but Phil recently said something to the effect of 'feeling comfortable' with who we currently have. My guess is that our 4th round draft pick will be a corner or we will see if anybody piques our interest after June 1st. But I really doubt we will try to get any of the names you mentioned in your post. JMHO.
My guess is that they feel Wright and BMcD played well enough last year that they should get the starting jobs and let them develop. Brining in another veteran will only hinder their development. Plus, if our new D-line can do what they've been brought here to do, then our secondary should not have to work as hard as they have in the past.

Pac (I won't add MAN until he grows up and acts like one) can keep his underwear clean longer than he can his nose. (and thats even if he never wipes his behind.)

That's not really an answer to the question, which is: "How could signing PacMan to a deal with good protections against him messing up possibly hurt us?"
And Kardiac, I agree that the odds of going after these guys is probably low, just because of the costs involved. But, Phil has already made some risky moves so far, if he thinks another one would improve a team (For instance DeAngelo Hall for next years first) how could he not pull the trigger again?

He will want a big signing bonus IMO which would hurt us when he screws up. I can also see him dragging a few of the younger DB's down with him. Plus the press would pay more attention to him that anything the team did.

I'll tell ya' how...
Dude's a flat-out SLUG...How many times did he do what he did even while he was suspended all year???...Too many...
Protection against the CAP is fine...
How bout ROSTER protection???
U sign this slug and then he gets popped again and we're right back to where we are NOW...And even WORSE because we put all our stock in Jones...

And I might hit Blackjack once or twice after doubling down on 15, but that sure as heck isn't a smart bet 99% of the time. Besides, I have a feeling he is satisfied with who we have. He's not going to spend next year's #1 if he feels comfortable with our current situation.

I think when I listened to a interview with Savage he said that he wants to keep next year's draft intact...so my question is what in the world could we trade for Lito..? This is about the best deal I could think of: This year's 4th Next year's 2nd (As long as we dont trade next years 1st I dont care) and a 6 pack of Great Lakes

My personal opinion, is I'd rather sign a young guy with less talent and more heart & class and upside than a talented trouble maker than is only gonna end up giving this franchise a black eye down the road.....Pac has done it time & time again weather he's guilty or not isnt up to me to decide, but I can see a troublemaker a mile away.....
Sorry but Pac dosent deserve to wear the Orange & Brown.....
does anybody remember Andre Rison....
