I think it is normal for people to be racist.
It is only when bigotry sets in that racism is a problem.
You walk in to a room with 100 people of another race and 2 of your race, you are going to congregate with the people of your race.
That is a NORMAL human condition....probably a survival instinct.
Now if you use that to hate or cast someone simply because they are different, that is bigotry.

I've been a member Catholic churches that were majority Hispanic and majority Black and majority Vietnamese. I never felt threatened at all. I am white. I never once heard any of the parishioners utter such racist comments.

In my posts, I never stated that Rev Wright comments were not racist!! Or should I say just as racist as G.Ferraro's statements!! DogNDC, you say that Hagee, Parsley, and Robertson, and all their associates are racist. Can you back that up? Hagee attacks both Catholics and Protestants who hold ANTISEMITIC views. Also, these men do not hate catholics, they disagree with the Catholic heiarchy.( spelling incorrect, I know.) and they are not condoning or applauding violence against anyone like Wright is doing. If the Vatican was bombed by Baptist terrorists, they would not say that they had it coming. If you have some quotes that show that any of these men ( Hagee, Parsley, or Robertson) are racist, please share them with me.

If a person wants to fly that flag, that is their right, and I have no problem with that. But on a state or govt building, NO!!, The American Flag is to be flown over those buildings, not the flag of a govt tried to leave the union( TREASON) and declared war on the US. So I guess its OK to display the Russian flag or Mexican Flag on a state house on the same level as the US Flag?? I know there are rules as far as how to display the US flag but again, if you want to fly your confederate flag, have at it, but on the certain buildings, NOPE!

I'd say it's a little of both and I could give you dozens of examples, of course most are isolated incidences but when taken in context I believe they paint a representative picture.
About 3 or 4 weeks ago we had good weather, I live in a community which isn't finished yet and is still selling lots/houses... a bunch of people were outside working and playing in the yard... 3 white, a black and a middle eastern.. so down the road comes a car going slow obviously checking out the neighborhood, the people in it were black. They drove right past 2 of the white guys and the middle eastern guy, then pulled over and asked the black guy about the neighborhood, the schools, etc.
Is that a bad thing? Heck I don't know. I certainly wasn't offended. If I was checking into a neighborhood I would most likely pick out the guy that seemed to have the most in common with me to ask.. the guy with the basketball hoop or the visible golf clubs in the garage or the guy cutting the grass with a beer in his hand. I'm not going to pick the guy that looks like I have nothing in common with. So with little information to go on, the black guy trusted the other black guy... big deal. That is probably a mild example of racism, but it doesn't show bigotry. JMHO.
But the point is, the kids in the car subconsciously observed that... and in some small way, were taught to trust another black guy over the white and middle eastern guy....

I don't know if it has aired yet or not, but the transcripts are posted already. perfection I know, I know...giving speeches doesn't make a good president. But this speech reminds me a lot of JFK. I just watched it, great speech! I wasn't sold on Obama until i heard his speech today. It was first of all, from the heart. I could tell that this subject, that of overall racial injustice between everyone was something that needs to change and would help America. He did tie it back into his whole "Change" motto though, that he is an element of change for this country. Secondly, he distanced himself from the minister by saying that his beliefs are old and outdated, wrong, and part of the racial divide in this country.

This isn't just in humans, this is across the higher animal kingdom (chordates). More often than not, animals will associate with those that are most similar or they think they already know. Especially in primates! Individuals viewed as different or not of the norm are usually thrown out of the group, or not admitted at all. This is an evolutionary instinct that helped groups survive in the past. "If it doesn't look, act, smell like you, dont touch!"
Thats not saying that we can't overcome that feeling just that it's easier said than done.

Matter of fact, i feel very safe over here.......and i was talking about Ballpeen.....i've only replied maybe 4x's regarding this topic......open your eyes and read what i said.......i chose to stay away from topics like this,because most people think EVERYTHING is SWEET(fools gold)......so i responded because someone choose to say something, that was totally uncalled for and i won't close my eyes to something that was so hurtful and not called for.......this is 2008,not the 60's and beyond......black people were told to shut up and keep their mouths closed or it would be an hanging or beaten.or have dogs attack them.......please....i will continue to speak when things are said w/out thinking when it comes to my race.

I just don't feel there will ever be a homogeneous mix of races or religions....there never has. What makes you think we are so smart now to figure out a problem that has plagued mankind since we were fighting over bones and flint rock??

I think the sooner we realize the parameters that are going to be involved in a relationship, the sooner the relationship stands a chance of working.
