Cavs: Cleveland Making Move For Maggette?

The mantra says it all. Too bad the distant voices from rumorville scream louder.
The Cleveland Cavaliers claim this season is "All For One. One For All" and with the Cavs boasting the best record in the East, a modest four game win streak, and sitting in first place (21-12) atop the Central Division, you would think those words speak the truth.
Not so fast.
Maybe the tagline should read "All For One. One For All. And One More."
Could Cory Maggette be the one more in Cleveland?
According to an NBA executive, the Los Angeles Clippers have recently defined exactly what they want in return for Corey Maggette. An executive who spoke recently with the Clippers noted they want a solid veteran player, a young player with potential, and a future first round draft pick in return for Maggette.
The Clippers apparently are in talks with at least three other teams.
Are the Cavs one of the three teams in the running?
The San Antonio Spurs and Miami Heat are clearly two of the three teams who inquired about the Clippers swingman who is averaging 15.2 points per game and 5.6 rebounds per game in his seventh year in the league.
One published report explained Spurs' team officials continue to speak with the Clippers about Maggette but remain hesitant about parting with both Brent Barry and Beno Udrih in a possible deal as well as their first round pick. The Heat apparently offered James Posey, Dorell Wright, and a future first round pick but talks have not progressed since the initial report came out last week.
This leaves Cavs General Manager Danny Ferry in an interesting position. Cleveland has as much a chance at acquiring Maggette now that trade talks have stalled between all parties involved and if Ferry can meet the trade requirement Los Angeles has put forth-a solid veteran, young player, and a future first round draft pick-Maggette could be Cleveland bound.
Ferry has options here and players to tinker with, namely David Wesley, Aleksandar Pavlovic, and a future first round pick.
Wesley could fill the solid veteran role for Mike Dunleavy and be an immediate impact in Los Angeles. Although the 13 year veteran has seen limited time with the Cavs, Wesley is the answer to the Clippers point guard situation with an injured Sam Cassell on the sidelines.
Pavlovic would be the second player involved. At 6,7, there are few things the forward's game is missing in Cleveland. Playing time tops the list. Drew Gooden, Donyell Marshall, and Anderson Varejao have the low post on lockdown with Pavlovic (4.6 points per game, 14.1 minutes per game, in 22 games played) easily the odd man out. Is he the main man in a deal for Maggette?
The one snafu could be the future first round pick demand. It's slim pickings with the Cavs 2007 first pick going to the Phoenix Suns this year but perhaps Ferry could interest the Clippers in a first round pick a little further down the road in 2008 or 2009.
Some argue why grab Cory Maggette with the Cavs rolling and Larry Hughes holding down the guard position and LeBron James on the wing? The answer is simple. If you have a chance to acquire a player the caliber of Maggette, it's worth dabbling in. He's hasn't averaged less than 15 points per game in the last five seasons, gets to the line with ease (ranks #1 in the NBA in Free Throws Per 48 Minutes-10.71) and coming off the bench is nothing new for Maggette, a role he knows far too well in Los Angeles.
Something says Maggette wouldn't argue the point if Mike Brown asked the same of him in Cleveland. A chance to play alongside James and on a team clearly destined to go deep into the postseason makes the decision that much easier. Playing time wouldn't be an issue. Maggette could also help spell James so the "Chosen One" doesn't become the "Burnt Out One" as the season grows on and as the postseason nears.
Time will tell if the Cleveland Cavaliers actually show interest in a deal with the Los Angeles Clippers for Cory Maggette or if this is another moment of trade speculation in the NBA. But you never know what can happen unless you ask.
Ask away Danny. Ask away.
