I would love to have Boykins. I think he would be the perfect fit as a point for us.

Depends on the price. If they want a salary dump, I'm fine with it. If they simply want a trade exemption, I'm fine with it. But if they want any of Gibson/Brown etc. no deal. Boykins is Jeff McInnis, without the personality issues. He is a bad defender, and with a coach that puts as much focus on D as Mike Brown does, how much PT would he actually receive? I like Earl Boykins, but I'm not sure that he is necessarily the greatest fit.

Cavs: Cleveland Making Move For Maggette?

By Wendell Maxey Jr.

The mantra says it all. Too bad the distant voices from rumorville scream louder.

The Cleveland Cavaliers claim this season is "All For One. One For All" and with the Cavs boasting the best record in the East, a modest four game win streak, and sitting in first place (21-12) atop the Central Division, you would think those words speak the truth.

Not so fast.

Maybe the tagline should read "All For One. One For All. And One More."

Could Cory Maggette be the one more in Cleveland?

According to an NBA executive, the Los Angeles Clippers have recently defined exactly what they want in return for Corey Maggette. An executive who spoke recently with the Clippers noted they want a solid veteran player, a young player with potential, and a future first round draft pick in return for Maggette.

The Clippers apparently are in talks with at least three other teams.

Are the Cavs one of the three teams in the running?

The San Antonio Spurs and Miami Heat are clearly two of the three teams who inquired about the Clippers swingman who is averaging 15.2 points per game and 5.6 rebounds per game in his seventh year in the league.

One published report explained Spurs' team officials continue to speak with the Clippers about Maggette but remain hesitant about parting with both Brent Barry and Beno Udrih in a possible deal as well as their first round pick. The Heat apparently offered James Posey, Dorell Wright, and a future first round pick but talks have not progressed since the initial report came out last week.

This leaves Cavs General Manager Danny Ferry in an interesting position. Cleveland has as much a chance at acquiring Maggette now that trade talks have stalled between all parties involved and if Ferry can meet the trade requirement Los Angeles has put forth-a solid veteran, young player, and a future first round draft pick-Maggette could be Cleveland bound.

Ferry has options here and players to tinker with, namely David Wesley, Aleksandar Pavlovic, and a future first round pick.

Wesley could fill the solid veteran role for Mike Dunleavy and be an immediate impact in Los Angeles. Although the 13 year veteran has seen limited time with the Cavs, Wesley is the answer to the Clippers point guard situation with an injured Sam Cassell on the sidelines.

Pavlovic would be the second player involved. At 6,7, there are few things the forward's game is missing in Cleveland. Playing time tops the list. Drew Gooden, Donyell Marshall, and Anderson Varejao have the low post on lockdown with Pavlovic (4.6 points per game, 14.1 minutes per game, in 22 games played) easily the odd man out. Is he the main man in a deal for Maggette?

The one snafu could be the future first round pick demand. It's slim pickings with the Cavs 2007 first pick going to the Phoenix Suns this year but perhaps Ferry could interest the Clippers in a first round pick a little further down the road in 2008 or 2009.

Some argue why grab Cory Maggette with the Cavs rolling and Larry Hughes holding down the guard position and LeBron James on the wing? The answer is simple. If you have a chance to acquire a player the caliber of Maggette, it's worth dabbling in. He's hasn't averaged less than 15 points per game in the last five seasons, gets to the line with ease (ranks #1 in the NBA in Free Throws Per 48 Minutes-10.71) and coming off the bench is nothing new for Maggette, a role he knows far too well in Los Angeles.

Something says Maggette wouldn't argue the point if Mike Brown asked the same of him in Cleveland. A chance to play alongside James and on a team clearly destined to go deep into the postseason makes the decision that much easier. Playing time wouldn't be an issue. Maggette could also help spell James so the "Chosen One" doesn't become the "Burnt Out One" as the season grows on and as the postseason nears.

Time will tell if the Cleveland Cavaliers actually show interest in a deal with the Los Angeles Clippers for Cory Maggette or if this is another moment of trade speculation in the NBA. But you never know what can happen unless you ask.

Ask away Danny. Ask away.

Yeah, we've been playing great on defense lately and Snow is a big part of that. Having a healthy Hughes and the way Gooden is playing is making up for what Snow lacks on offense. I like Boykins, but I don't think he'd be a good fit. I like that Maggette rumor though...

At 7.0---7.8---8.4 QO I'm not sure our cap can absorb Maggette...Need to figure...

But Maggette would be interesting fo sure...Tell ya' what...Just to have him around when Hughes goes down AGAIN would be worth everything...And to spell Bron???...PRICELESS!!!!!

Yeah, that wouldn't work. Wesley and Sasha both make under $2 mill a year...

I don't know about Maggette. We need inside presence and a passing point guard ... Not another Small Forward/Shooting Guard. Unless we plan to trade Larry Hughes as part of the deal. <img src="/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

I love getting Maggette. Those are the kind of moves we need to make. All the big dog teams have 8-9 starters on the teem that results in deep talent. We do not. Getting Maggette who has 3 years left on his contract is big.

But the writer is wrong. Wesley makes 1.75 mil. It would take Snow's 6 mil and Sasha's 1.9 plus a first round in 08' to match Maggette's 7 mil. a year.

The question is whether the Clippers would do that.

I like the Boykins move. Between him and Snow we would have a pretty solid PG. We could bring Snow in down the stretch for defense, and use Earl when we need an offensive spark. It would be a good combination.

I'm not sure I'd touch the Maggette deal if they want Brown or Gibson, a veteran, AND a future 1st rounder. That's too much, plus he carries a large salary.

Brian Windhorst reported over the weekend that Denver most likely would dump Boykins for a trade exemption, especially when Carmelo comes back from suspension. I'd much rather do that because, as another poster pointed out, we have enough SF/SG types.

• Though they are running hot now, the Cavs still might look at getting another guard before next month's trading deadline. Two names that have emerged as potential targets, the Denver Nuggets' Earl Boykins and the Dallas Mavericks' Anthony Johnson. It might seem crazy for the Nuggets at the moment, considering Boykins is routinely putting up 20-point nights, but he figures to get his playing time slashed once Carmelo Anthony and J.R. Smith return from suspensions. Another factor is that Boykins, who is making about $3 million this season, is expected to opt out of his contract at season's end. He's somewhat of a shoot-first guard and isn't a great defender. That might make him a complement to Eric Snow, who is a good defender but not a shooter. Boykins is from Cleveland and has a good relationship with James.

Johnson is the Mavericks' third point guard and has been rumored to be available, although it doesn't seem like it will happen in the near future considering the Mavericks have been playing almost perfect basketball. But things change in the NBA in February. Johnson, who also makes about $3 million, knows Cavs coach Mike Brown and his system from when both were with the Indiana Pacers and the two have a good relationship.

Along with a player, another thing the Cavs might be able to offer both teams is luxury-tax relief. Both the Nuggets and Mavericks are currently over the tax line, and the Nuggets in particular are interested in getting a few million off the books to get below the line. The Cavs own two trade exceptions that can be used to acquire a player without returning equal salaries. The more valuable one is valued at $2,091,480, which they picked up when trading Luke Jackson to the Boston Celtics in October. The Cavs also consider themselves about $2.5 million below the luxury tax line, which they'd prefer not to cross. Their payroll figures to be about $63 million but that includes several million in bonuses that only will be paid out to Hughes and Donyell Marshall if they reach certain win totals.

cory maggette would be nice, but i have a feeling we'd have to give up more than we'd want for him, and he's not really what we need...

even with the wesley/pavs/draft pick for maggette not being able to work, i don't think the clippers would pull that deal anyays, they're not doing well, but they should pick it up and make the playoffs...
