That's what they are supposed to do. The guy/gal getting the baton is supposed to take off, stick their arm back, and wait for the passer to put it in their hand.

That's the way sprint relays are done... the runner putting his arm back is suppose to take it from the other runner.. so when they stick their hand back the batton is suppose to be placed right in their hands... then the trailing runner isn't suppose to let go until the anchor takes it rom them.
In the men's it looks like Tyson had the batton in his hands but never closed his hand to take it away from the third runner.
In the women's I don't think it ever got into Larun's hands...
oh well.

Funny Olympic ritual I noticed: Why does every volleyball team hug after every point won??? All I had seen were the women's teams playing. So I thought it was a woman thing. Wrong. I'm watching USA men vs. Russia. And they do it too. After every point. Group hug.

Man, I feel bad for Lolo Jones. Did anyone else see her 100m hurdles final?
She was cruising for the gold when she just nipped the 9th hurdle (of 10) which threw off her pace and she ended up finishing in 7th. If she hadn't done that, she wins easily.
She really took it in stride once she overcame her emotions and was very gracious. It was really pretty inspirational, but man, I felt really badly for her.

I have to say, one thing I really love about the U.S. in the Olympics is the diversity of last names.
When you see other countries, you can always guess what kind of last names they will have, for the most part. There are the "easy" ones, like Japan, China, etc. Russia and Poland often have very distinct last names. The English and the Australians have very "English" last names.
But when you come to the Americans, you have a really great mix. I mean, look at the last name of some of our athletes and the broad spectrum that they represent. I always enjoy seeing that.

I had the same thought a couple days ago. You really can appreciate how the US is a melting pot in terms of population in comparison to all the other countries... not just the last names, but also in the looks of the competitors.

Yeah, in her interview you would've thought she just finished second in a regular track meet. She looked really composed in the interview. Then a few minutes later they showed her under the stadium with her head on her knees and just bawling her eyes out. I felt horrible for her.

Sanya Richards... settling for a single bronze medal until her last race- where she came from over 1 second behind the Russians to win in the last 50 meters.
Jason Lezak... 32 years old, in a sport that favors swimmers under 26... bringing it back against the world record holder to out-touch the arrogant French smacktalkers for the gold.
Dawgs...EITHER of these two races/stories would be worthy of its own feature-length movie.
The human interest angles, the gameday drama of competition, the "overcoming all adversity" nature of each race....
...it's everything I wait 4 years to see... each and every time.

Same here. II watch pretty much everything in the summer. In winter all I really wanna see is the bobsledding, skiing, and hockey. Curling has grown on me too. but it's not the same at all.

Agreed that the Winter olympics are the little brother of the two. This was a good Summer Games, even if you take away Phelps. With him, perhaps it was even great? Made for an exciting two weeks of TV for me, anyway.
Also, happy that my girls got the silver and handed Brazil its first lost set of the games. Brazil was friggin' beastly, though.

Curling is awesome, I tried it once at Winterhurst and I have never fallen on my ass that many times in my life. This from someone who has played a bit of hockey.
The Mens voleyball final is on TV right now, not as eye pleasing as watching the women play but the match itself is awesom. US is up 2 sets to 1 right now and trying to get the third set.

I was forced to take curling in college to satisfy my last gen ed PE credits.
Class met at 8:00 AM, and I was commuting from an hour away. I HATED that class... until I actually went to it.
Curling is a great game! It requires strategy, finesse, control, teamwork, communication, and a good deal of athleticism. I was hooked after two or three classes, and NEVER skipped a one. I was actually sad to see the semester end, because I knew that was prob the last of curling I'd have in life.
Since then, I've watched it every year on CBC (Canadian TV) and get into it almost as much as if I were on the ice.
Just recently found out that there are a couple curling clubs in my area.... think I might check them out when I get a chance.
ALL DAWGS: If you're tired of your bowling league, try curling... it provides the same comeraderie.... and you get to chase every shot all the way to DA HOUSE!!!
a real blast... and a cheap sport to get into, as well...

of course, we couldn't imbibe during class time, but the teacher stressed it's importance REPEATEDLY... in case any students decided to take it up after class...

I know this is late but did anyone watch the Womens soocer gold match? It was between the US and Brazil. The score was only 1-0 but I have never seen a soccer match played so hard that I was on the edge of my seat. It was definatley an outstanding sporting event to watch. Especially the desire of Brazils Marta. She almost tied the game by herself with so much will. Then the rleentless defense of the US team was also a spectacle.
