Aren't people more inclined to want to hang out with a fun person at a club other than a bummer.

I have a seven year old nephew who has ADD and I can only stand him for about 10 minutes before I have to go scream and pull my hair out.... Hanging out with Chad Johnson would probably be about the same... that is if I could last the full 10 mintues.

I don't know how some of you find it inconceivable that many people think it's funny for a man to change his legal last name to "Ocho Cinco".

That's not the part I find inconceivable.

Dude- I only read the first couple of inches of type, but I gotta agree... seeing that stoopidazz name written into a basically academic-reading legitimate article is funny as hell... in a bizarrely absurd way. Love the official redirect, too.

I can just hear it now:

"Licence and registration, please."
"Yessir, officer... here ya go."
Well, Mr. uh- is your last name hyphenated... you know- like a married feminist?"
"Uh- yes. That's right. Hyphenated.. Like you said."
"Well, Mr. 'Ocho-Cinco'... do you know how fast you were going?"
"About 65?"
"More like Ochenta-y-Cinco. Here's your ticket."
"Uh... thanks, I guess...."
" De nada. Buenos noches, Chad. Drive safely."

Michelle you may not think it's funny but to say some of us are "sad" and that you "worry about us" because we find humor in stuff that you apparently take way too serious is a bit stupid.

It may be stupid that he changed his name and it may affect you and get annoying to you that you have to hear about Chad Ocho Cinco but to be honest to not snicker about someone changing their name to Ocho Cinco means either A.) its not your type of humor. or B.) You take things a bit too serious.

For the last time, this isn't just about his name change. Also, I never said I find those of you that like him "sad". I said: "It's so NOT funny it's actually sad. I worry about some of you." It meaning the persona he portrays. If some of you love the guy, that's fine by me, I just don't understand the attraction. He's a very childish dude and I guess I thought higher of the fans here. It's that simple.

I'm with Michelle, I think it's more stupid than anything. It's over the top and unnecessary. It's like he can't be happy if he's not the center of attention... EVERYBODY here knows a person like that and it gets to be too much after a certain point.

I'm in the process of changing my name because of getting married, and let me tell you it is far from "funny". Spending hours on the phone, sitting in government buildings and court houses for hours, going through security everyday, shelling out cash left and right for parking, fees, and what-have you.... Anybody who would willingly do this is not very smart in my book. It's a pretty expensive and time consuming "joke" or "media stunt". Whatever you call it, it's just dumb. JMHO.

There's real bengal fans out there?

Actually, I grew up with a kid who is a Bengals fan. Only one I knew. He moved to Chicago so I don't really talk to him much....though I did text him after that 51-48 win last season.

Any real fan sees that he has become pure poison to the team. Most CJ fans today (who are also Bengal fans) are either bandwagoners or just plain clueless.
He said himself, "I'm not a football player, I'm an enternainer." He needs to go audition for Mad TV with all the other comedy rejects.

Wouldn't do it. I had a Chris Henry sig with a mugshot once, and the refs deleted it due to considering it "smack." Don't know if they'd consider that being the same.

LOL, I'm pretty tired but I'll take that as a compliment. So thanks.

I did have to add a caveat, I didn't mean "CJ fans" to be directed at posters here in any way.

...maybe it's a girl/guy thing up to a point? You ladies probably weren't into the Stooges as kids either, were you?

just tossing it out there- I got no answers.

_____________________________

It seems that there are 3 camps of folks regarding CO-C:

1. those who are entertained by him
2. those who are annoyed by him
3. those who watch and just shake their heads, not knowing what to think.

The ANNOYED GROUP seem to fall into 2 camps, as well... the ones who are footbal purists, and dislike the non-traditional aspect of his personna in favor of a team player, and the ones who simply don't find endzone celebrations, off-the-wall interviews, and outrageous stunts their cup of tea.

I'm not here to tell anyone what to think regarding this dude. For me, I find some of his stuff extremely funny. The rest... not so much so. If he cut down on about half of it, and gave us only the best of it, I'd be much happier.

Pepto.... funny. It ws between players and private...until it 'leaked' to the media
HOF jacket... stupid.
Sidelines proposal? funny.
CameraMan? stupid.

To be honest, I think he's more entertaining and unpredictable in interviews. His mind is quick, and there's a Robin Williams-like unpredictability to his responses. I see enough boring, predictable, cliche-laden, "tell me nothing" type interviews from any number of players every single blessed day. Chad is NEVER that type of interview.

C'mon... do you really think he's conviced he can beat MPhelps in a swimming pool? He knows how hard it is to be at or near the top of an athletic profession, and dude just set 4 or 5 world records against fellow specialists. Yet Chad says this stuff with a straight face, and plays the role to the hilt. Tony Kornheiser and Mike Wilbon got the joke. I got it. Lots of others did, too... and folks are talking about it in bars, living rooms and dens all over America.

I think he's spoofing on all of us while he's still in the public eye. His career is only going to last into his 30's, and he's having the best time possible with it while he can. As long as his antics aren't a distraction for my team, I get to watch him like I would some actor on a sitcom: goofy, mindless entertainment that happens to occasionally tickle my funny bone.

Humor is subjective. If you don't get the joke, or even if you do get it but don't find it funny, that's understandable to me. No one person can make everyone in the world laugh.

I'm just one of those folks who find him to be more clever than crazy.

Clever... in controlled doses, that is...

I can't agree with you about him being "quick" and "clever" in interviews.

I've watched him in a few interviews this year where he didn't know what to say, and ended up just sounding like a jackass. And not because he was trying to be funny.

Yeah, some stuff he has done is funny, but I'm more with that 3rd group. I just shake my head most of the time. Laugh sometimes, but mostly shake my head.

I can't speak for anyone else, I just feel like there is a time and place for everything. When you're on the field you "do your job", plain and simple. If you're good at what you do, people will notice. You shouldn't have to say it and act like that...

This is what my main problem is because he's on my team... his head isn't 100% in the game and his performance suffers.

You make some good points, BTW.

It would amaze me if the NFL is not already thinking about banning names from uniforms. I wouldn't be surprised if we next have some player's agent seeing the marketing opportunity to change a guy's name to Dodge-Ram, Bayer-Aspirin or Ex-lax or Ben-Gay or something in exchange for a hefty price.

I fall into the second group. I find him extremely annoying and wish I'd never hear his name again.

I found him ammusing at first but quickly got to the point where I wished he'd just disappear.

Thought I have to admit the petmo and Tiger things were both pretty funny.

[edit] Early years
Ocho Cinco's first love was soccer, but he chose football in high school because it gave him more opportunity.[4]

[edit] College career
After graduating from Miami Beach Senior High School in 1996, Ocho Cinco attended Santa Monica Junior College in 1997, where he was a teammate of future Carolina Panthers star wide receiver Steve Smith. In 2000, Ocho Cinco transferred to Oregon State University after being aggressively recruited by coach Dennis Erickson. Alongside future Bengals teammate T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Ocho Cinco led his team to an 11-1 season and a victory over Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl that year. He also broke a school-book record for the longest touchdown reception by any player in their school's history with a 97 yard reception in a game against Stanford University.

Ocho Cinco finished his sole season at Oregon State with 37 receptions for 806 yards and 8 touchdowns.

[edit] Professional career
The Cincinnati Bengals chose Ocho Cinco in the second round (36th Overall) during the 2001 NFL Draft.

[edit] 2001-2005
Ocho Cinco saw moderate playing time as a rookie, catching 28 passes for 329 yards and one touchdown. In 2003, Ocho Cinco set a Bengals franchise record by recording 1,355 receiving yards. In 2004, Ocho Cinco caught 95 receptions for 1,274 yards and 9 touchdowns. In one of the most impressive games, the 58-48 win against the Cleveland Browns, Ocho Cinco had 117 receiving yards. He later surpassed the record in 2005, recording 1,432 yards. Ocho Cinco has led the AFC in receiving yards for four consecutive seasons, and he has made the Pro Bowl 5 straight times in 2003,2004,2005, 2006, and in 2007.[5]

[edit] 2006
On April 20, 2006, Ocho Cinco signed a contract extension. The deal, which pays Ocho Cinco an additional $35.5 million, will last up to 2011.[6]

During the first half of 2006 Cincinnati Bengals season, Ocho Cinco saw little activity. After being bogged down by an early injury, Ocho Cinco's productivity endured a sharp decline. During the first eight weeks of the 2006 season, Ocho Cinco only caught two touchdown passes, while only amassing 483 yards. However, after shaving his Mohawk and changing his mentality, Ocho Cinco had a breakout game in a losing effort against the San Diego Chargers. Ocho Cinco accumulated 260 receiving yards and scored two touchdowns, which broke the previous Bengals record for most receiving yards in a game.[7]. He went on to amass 190 receiving yards and 3 touchdowns in a 31-16 win over the New Orleans Saints in the following week. This gave him an NFL record 450 receiving yards in back-to-back games, breaking the previous record of 448 set by San Francisco 49ers receiver John Taylor in 1989. In the following week, Chad gained 129 yards receiving breaking the three game receiving record since the NFL-AFL merger in 1970 and coming within 40 yards of the all-time record.

Ocho Cinco finished the 2006 season with 87 receptions for a league leading 1,369 yards and 7 touchdowns. He was the first Bengal ever to lead the NFL in receiving yards. He and Houshmandzadeh also became the first Bengals teammates to each amass over 1,000 receiving yards in the same season.

In addition to being one of the most productive receivers in the NFL, Ocho Cinco is also one of the most popular ones. In the fan voting for the 2006 Pro Bowl, Ocho Cinco finished first in votes for wide receivers, and fourth overall with 987,650 total votes.[8] He has earned nationwide attention for his flamboyant attitude, which is often seen during his infamous end zone celebrations after catching touchdown passes. In a list released in August 2006 by Fox Sports listing the top 10 showboats in professional sports, Chad topped the list.[9] Furthermore, Ocho Cinco has drawn even more attention to himself with his gilded grills, earrings, and as of 2006, his bleach blond mohawk, which he eventually shaved off after subsequent losses.

Before teammate Chris Henry was suspended for eight games of the 2007 season due to off-field issues, Ocho Cinco spoke of Henry in an interview with ESPN which was featured on NFL Live. He said in the interview of how Chris tried to act like a "hardball" and went a little too far, and that "everyone gets it".

[edit] 2007
In the first game of the season, on Monday Night Football against the Baltimore Ravens, Chad Ocho Cinco scored the game's first score on a 39-yard touchdown pass from Carson Palmer. Following the touchdown, Ocho Cinco grabbed a jacket that resembles the Pro Football Hall of Fame inductees' jacket that said, "Future H.o.F 20??". Ocho Cinco finished the game with 5 receptions for 95 yards and a touchdown. In the next game against the Cleveland Browns, Ocho Cinco racked up 209 yards on 11 catches for 2 touchdowns in the 51-45 loss. This gave him a career total of 7,229 receiving yards, breaking the Bengals franchise record previously held by Isaac Curtis. The very next game against the Seattle Seahawks, Ocho Cinco totaled nine receptions for 138 yards as the Bengals lost again. Against the New York Jets, in which the Bengals won 38-31, Ocho Cinco had 3 receptions for 102 yards and a rush for 15 yards.

In the fourth quarter of the Bengals Week 9 loss to the Buffalo Bills Chad was rolled off the field on a stretcher, with a reported head injury. Ocho Cinco had dove out for a pass, with under a minute left in the 33-21 loss, and then was sandwiched by Donte Whitner and Coy Wire. Ocho Cinco was reported to be moving at the hospital.[10] He finished the game with three catches for 48 yards. A CT scan performed to detect nerve damage came back negative. Ocho Cinco did not miss any games due to the injury.

Over his next two games, Ocho Cinco didn't score any touchdowns or gain more than 86 yards. But he had a breakout performance in a November 25 win over the Tennessee Titans, catching a career high 12 passes for 103 yards and 3 touchdowns. This gave him over 1,000 receiving yards for the sixth consecutive season. He also surpassed Carl Pickens as the Bengals all-time leader in receptions.

By week 15, Ocho Cinco and Houshmandzadeh both gained over 1,000 receiving yards for the second year in a row. However, a loss to the San Francisco 49ers that week ensured the team would finish the year with their first losing season since 2002. Ocho Cinco finished the season with 4 catches for 131 yards and 2 touchdowns in a win over the Miami Dolphins, giving him 93 receptions for 1,440 yards and 8 touchdowns on the season.

His 1,440 yards set a new Bengals franchise record, breaking his own record of 1,432 in 2005. It was the third time that Ocho Cinco finished a season with a new Bengals record for receiving yards. Ocho Cinco's yardage was third most in the NFL, his receptions were 12th most, while his touchdowns were tied for 15th most in the league. Ocho Cinco was passed up on for the 2008 Pro Bowl team, instead selecting his teammate T.J. Houshmandzadeh.

He has played in 103 consecutive games since his rookie season in 2001.

On January 13, 2008, Ocho Cinco was a guest on ESPN's Mike & Mike radio show. During the interview, Ocho Cinco addressed how the media and team treated him during the 2007 season, saying, "I was labeled selfish and a cancer, and it hurt...Fingers were pointed at me this year. If the team and the organization wants to further itself (make the playoffs), I think you need to get rid of the problem...It hurt me. To do me that way and not to have my back. Things were said, and nobody came to my defense." However, head coach Marvin Lewis commented on the issue by saying that the Bengals will not be trading Ocho Cinco. "He is a Cincinnati Bengal for quite a while." Lewis said.[11]

On February 4, 2008, Ocho Cinco was selected as the replacement for Patriots' receiver Randy Moss in the 2008 Pro Bowl. The selection marked his fifth consecutive Pro Bowl selection. Ocho Cinco and teammate T.J. Houshmandzadeh were both selections, marking the first time a pair of Bengals receivers have made the Pro Bowl in the same year.[12]

Also on February 4th, Chad Ocho Cinco's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, stated that Ocho Cinco will not sit out the 2008 season and will play, but would not say whether it will still be with Cincinnati or not. ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported that Ocho Cinco felt betrayed by Marvin Lewis and was privately threatening to sit out the 2008 season.[13]

On February 14, 2008, Marvin Lewis announced that the Bengals have never discussed trading Ocho Cinco and won't unless the right deal is there. Reports stated that Ocho Cinco has been looking for a deal with the Washington Redskins. Lewis also stated that he has not spoken to Ocho Cinco since the last regular season game, yet when asked about the trade rumors, Chad said "Call me, Dan," referring to Redskins' owner Daniel Snyder.[14] On April 22, the Cincinnati Bengals' declined a Washington Redskins' trade for Chad Ocho Cinco involving a first round 2008 NFL Draft selection and a 2009 NFL Draft selection.[15]

On NFL Network's NFL Total Access, Ocho Cinco said he did not want a pay raise from the Bengals, but rather a "change of scenery".[16] Ocho Cinco then refused to speak to reporters and missed the offseason workout programs and practices.[17] On April 16, Ocho Cinco announced he wanted to be traded before the 2008 NFL Draft or as soon as possible afterwards. Ocho Cinco also said he would not attend any Bengals' functions, mandatory or voluntary, despite what quarterback Carson Palmer said about Ocho Cinco reporting to the team's mini-camp.[18] The next day, April 17, teammate T.J. Houshmandzadeh told ESPN that it would be best for the Bengals to trade Ocho Cinco. "I think eventually he'll show up, but then you have to worry about how much of a distraction he'll be," Houshmandzadeh told ESPN.[19]

On June 3, nine days before the opening of the Bengals' mandatory minicamp on June 12, Ocho Cinco told ESPN The Magazine that he would be returning to the Bengals for the camp. "Am I coming back? Of course I am," Ocho Cinco told the magazine in the issue of which he was featured as the coverboy.[20] Ocho Cinco's agent Drew Rosenhaus, confirmed reports that Ocho Cinco will indeed show up to training camp and honor his contract. [21] On August 5, Ocho Cinco returned to practice after his ankle surgery on June 18.[22]

In the Bengals' August 17 pre-season game against the Detroit Lions, Chad Ocho Cinco suffered an injury to his left shoulder and did not return. Initial reports were that it was a mild separation, which was later echoed by Marvin Lewis: "We'll be able to treat it conservatively, and he'll have to get his strength back in it. It came out and went right back in on the field."[23] A later examination revealed that Ocho Cinco actually suffered a partial tear to the labrum. However, Ocho Cinco plans to play the entire season and stated that he had spoken with the Cleveland Browns' Kellen Winslow, Jr. and Donte Stallworth and the Philadelphia Eagles' Brian Westbrook, all of whom have played with a similar condition. Ocho Cinco stated that "I'm lifting my normal weight. I do everything normal now. Everything. It's been what? Eight days? I'm back to normal."[24]

[edit] Bengals franchise records
Ocho Cinco holds the following records in the Bengals organization:

Most receiving yards in a season (1,440)
Most receiving yards all-time (8,365)
Most receiving touchdowns (49)
Most receiving yards in a game (260)
Most seasons with over 1,000 receiving yards (6)
Most touchdown receptions in a game (3, tied with several other players)

[edit] "The List"
During the 2005 NFL season, Ocho Cinco announced that he would keep a checklist, entitled who Covered 85 in '05, that would evaluate the defensive backs that successfully managed to cover him. On November 2, 2005, Marvin Lewis, the Bengals head coach, replaced Ocho Cinco’s list with another one entitled, Did 85 do everything he could to lead his team to victory 11-6-05. The list, an obvious parody of the original, asked several questions regarding Ocho Cinco’s performance both on and off the field.[25] According to the Bengals' official website, the list was aimed to galvanize the Baltimore Ravens, whom the Bengals would play in four days.[25] Ocho Cinco was not pleased with the new list, as he had developed a superstitious faith in the older list. Ocho Cinco had a stellar performance during the game, prompting the return of the original list.[25]

In 2007, Degree and Yahoo! created an online version of his checklist at TrashTalk85.com.[26] The checklist allows fans to vote for which NFL quarterback Ocho Cinco would like to play catch with the most. Every vote helps him raise money for his charity project,"Feed the Children".[26]

[edit] In the media
Chad Ocho Cinco appears on the cover of EA's NFL Street 3. He is the main adversary in the game, and narrates the tutorials with Clinton Portis and Byron Leftwich.[27]

[edit] Nickname
On October 25, 2006, in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, Ocho Cinco announced he would prefer to be called, "Ocho-Cinco" ("8-5" in Spanish). During the October 29, 2006 game against the Atlanta Falcons, Ocho Cinco wore "Ocho Cinco" instead of "C. Johnson" on the back of his jersey during warm-ups. This was prior to an interview where Chad "called out" Deangelo Hall, or, as to Ocho Cinco, Deangelo "Fall." Quarterback Carson Palmer ripped the label off Ocho Cinco's jersey to reveal the usual "C. Johnson".[28] According to ESPN, Ocho Cinco was fined US$5,000 for the stunt (pending appeal).[29]

He changed his name, legally, to Chad Javon Ocho Cinco on August 29, 2008.[30]

[edit] Personal
Ocho Cinco is a cousin of former NFL wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson and current NFL cornerback Samari Rolle.[31]

On May 5, 2007, Ocho Cinco was sued for allegedly not giving away a Lexus that was supposed to be raffled off. The suit added two plaintiffs that claimed that they have won trips from Ocho Cinco (one to Europe; one to Hawaii), that Ocho Cinco never awarded.[32]

On June 9, 2007, Ocho Cinco raced a thoroughbred racehorse over a furlong (220 yards) for charity. Ocho Cinco, given a 110-yard head start, beat the horse by twelve lengths.[33]

What's HILARIOUS to me is that 85 in spanish is ochenta y cinco. The guy is so dumb that he changes his name to eight five and not eighty five.

Yeah, that Wikipedia article is hilarious, especially the part where it points out what a dishonest, lying POS he is.
