My first college football game!

Wasn't my first but I was at that game. The funniest part about it was the opening kickoff. Thankfully OU's defense shut it down.

Speaking of the Bobcats, they're up 17-14 on Wyoming in the 2nd. 1st and 10 in the redzone looking for more. QB Theo Scott has looked very good. Cal transfer.

Remember the tall guy who ran onto the field in his boxers and climbed the goal posts?

One of my friends, went to high school with him. LOL

I was watching that game. This is the second year in a row that the MAC school knocked off a major conferance opponent on in their first game. last year they beat Minnesota. Pitts defense was kicking butt with their blitz. But they went to the well way too many times. Schools like BG win because of smart coaching. I was thinking that BG has to know Pitt is blitzing so they need to call a screen or a draw to catch them off gaurd to seal the win. Sure enough.

Did you see that excessive celebration after that sack by Briggs? I thought that was a BS call. I would like to see more of Briggs. He might be worth a look at in the future as a tweener 3-4 OLB/DE. But he might be a better fit as a 4-3 DE. But like I said, I have to see him play more and might check out his physical attributes and stats. He did a pretty good job getting to the QB against a Big East o-line. If he is under the radar he might be an UDFA that would be worth a look for the right defense. Im not even a huge college football fan but I like to play "couch GM". Im not even sure if the guy is coming out this year.

I did like that 54 yard FG I saw during the Ohio St. game. That would have made it well over 60 yards. Hopefully Wells is alright. OSUs o-line made it an easy day for the offense for the most part. They say college football doesnt have a preseason. This was pretty much a glorified practice for OSU that gave his former school more money then they could get for any other game. I wish YSU would have stuck with Rowan at QB a little more. This kid has been lighting it up in practice the past few years but never got a chance to play because of the upper classmen. But if the coaches felt he was better, they would have played the underclassmen anyways.

I would like to see more of

I was on the field at Toledo when Pitt was ranked 9th in the country and we upset them, it was great. Dont know if Dave was the coach then or not.

My buddy was just over here, and he is an OSU fan, and I asked him the same question... Would you rather Michigan lose every game, or lose only one game a year, to Ohio State?

He couldn't really answer. Because he loves to see Michigan lose, but would like them to win, so OSU's strength of schedule is better.

I think I'd rather them win every game except against us...

But really I'd like to see more big ten teams win out of conference.. because I'm tired of everyone saying how bad the Big Ten sucks.

Still a one score game but Michigan clearly can't win this game on offense. Defense has been decent but it needs to get some TO's. Bend but don't break has held them to some FG's but takeaways and field position is going to win it. Defense has been on the field WAYYYYYYYY to much in the first half though. Sheridan should have about 4 INT's right now. Keeps trying to make the difficult throw and misses when a guy does comes open. QB play is clearly going to be the achilles heel.

P.S. Game Over.

Offense isn't putting up 21+ in the second half, which is probably what it would take to win this one. After seeing the QB play, Mallett transferring definitely set us back a year here. A seasoned QB with a strong arm and this offense would probably look a lot better.

Defense is WORN OUT. Had the ball for 2/3 of that half.....probably running twice as many plays if I had to take a guess.

I don't have the game on here, they're playing USC.

But damn Nas, opening season upset 2 years in a row? As much as I hate Michigan, I hate seeing the Big Ten getting ripped on. I don't want to hear it from SEC fans, critics, etc if they fall.

I don't know how much of an upset this is. Utah was 9-3 last year and returned everyone. Teams were thought to be pretty evenly matched. QB play has been the difference. Utah has a 5th year senior who's been on the money all game and Michigan has a 1st year starter who clearly isn't that great. I would probably adjust my season expectation from 8-4 to 7-5 after seeing this game. This is a great offense, as Utah is showing but you need the QB to make it work.

I agree - I don't see this as an upset at all... Utah is a very good team and UM has an entirely new offense... tough match-up.

J/C,

At OSU we have gotten spoiled with our good kickers, but good grief, this Sakoda guy for Utah can really kick..

He absolutely drilled that 53 yarder..

Not a good throw for Threet in that situation. He had some good throws and then some really questionable throws. They're in trouble this year at QB.

Defense thought the game started at 4:45.

If Michigan can get average to above average QB play, their defense will surely win them some games. Can't miss a guy wide open on 4th down. Basic throw and catch.

Probably stick to 7-5 after watching this game. Make a bowl and try to find a frosh in '09 who's ready to play QB.

I do enjoy seeing Rodriguez all sad walking off the field, though.

Just like his players and fans he left in West Virginia.

After watching this game and looking at their schedule, they should have 4 easy wins: Miami (OH), @ND, Toledo, @Minnesota.

I don't think they've got the talent to beat Wisconsin, Illinois, and @Ohio State.

The real test of this year will be the close games: @PSU, MSU, @Purdue, and Northwestern.

I don't think Michigan is in for a long year. A long year by Michigan standards? Maybe. But, they showed some heart today, and I think they'll finish around 7 or 8 wins, and get into a bowl game.

I don't know, when Utah was playing serious (trying to score, no stupid penalties), they were moving the ball at will. The Utes tried their best to give the game away and still prevailed.

Michigan's playcalling was atrocious. It's like Michigan was deliberately playing into the defensive strong points and daring Utah to stop them....which they did. Utah found Michigan's weak points and exploited them....no adjustments were made to those 8-15 yard passes. Why Utah abandoned that strategy late in the game I'll never know....it's like that interception changed their game plan. Those receivers were still wide open from what I could see on TV.

Fantastic defense in the second half nas! If ya'll get a QB I think you'll be alright... Treet or whatever his name is could be pretty good... he had some decent throws today but just too many mistakes by both teams.

I agree... it's not up to Michigan standards per se, but even their fans have ot know that it's a transition year... I see 7 or 8 wins as well which is a solid year. They were talking about the possibility of a losing season during the game and I just don't see it. Their defense is solid and they have talent on offense... their QB situation needs to improve and they just have to leanr the system better.

LOL. When they were "playing serious"? Are U serious? Probably the funniest comment I've seen in some time. So Utah was thinking...."ok, this is only a 1 score game, not quite time to start playing serious again." Come on man.

Michigan's defense pretty much imposed it's will on Utah with its' halftime adjustments. The stupid decision by Sheridan at the end of the half is what cost them the game. 15-10 at half and they don't have to play catch up.

Play calling wasn't the problem, decision making was. Both QB's seemingly decided where the ball was going before it was snapped. No read and react at all. 4th down play was a microcosm. Threet locked on to the out while the seam route came wide open on a busted coverage. Wasn't a DB within 10 yards of the slot receiver but Threet decided before the ball was snapped that it was going to the outside guy. Those things happen with inexperience.

From what I saw in the second half, it wasn't all that disappointing. If Michigan's defense plays at or near that level they're a top 20 or so team if they can get decent QB play. With it, they're good enough to beat someone they shouldn't.....without it, they're going to lose close games to good teams (which they did today) and probably take a few 2 score beatings. All in all, about what I expected. Thought the defense would keep the offense in it.....if they had made a few more plays, they would have won. Probably going to be the formula from here on out. D will keep it close and the offense will win or lose the game late.

I'm curious as to what you thought of UM's OLine and blocking.. Utah was camping out in the backfield, setting up tents and starting bonfires at will.

Well, they're VERY green. Only 1 guy with any playing experience. Thought protection would be average and that's about what it was. They'll get better as the season progresses.

All phases of the game were pretty close to what I expected, with the exception of the QB play. Thought it would be a bit better then it was.

Going in to this game I thought Michigan would win but I also thought they surely could lose (hence the -3 line). Utah is a solid team that was just barely better. Even so...with better execution, the wins I expected (7 or 8) will be there.

Anyhoo.. just for FYI, my bookies spot card had Utah getting 6 points..

Glad I could amuse you on this sad day.

You honestly don't think Utah went into a "prevent" offense after that interception? Those same receivers were open that were open earlier (at least on the plays that we actually got a camera view). Johnson just hung onto the ball.....and with the stupid penalties, Michigan was let back into the game.

I'll take Cal minus the 6 points. In fact, I did take Cal minus the 6 points. I'm already 4 for 4 today with Utah +3, BGSU +14 1/2, Florida -35 1/2, and USC -20 1/2.

Give me 6 for 6 on the day with Cal -6, and Clemson -4 1/2
