This could be very good news if we land Piolli soon. Then we could get started on acquiring our new HC.
With that thought, I do have to say.....I feel badly for RAC and Savage, I really did want this team to succeed when they first were hired. However, for various reasons it just didn't work and it's time for the Browns to move forward. I wish RAC and Savage the best!

I would be interested in Mangini because of this point.
This is a guy whose QB basically imploded over the last 5 weeks of the season, and who was still in the hunt for the playoffs, in a division where the worst team went 7-9. They went 4-2 in this division.
It's not like San Diego, who made the playoffs by virtue of their 8-8 record being better than Denvers'. It's not like the AFC North, where divisional foes had the Browns and Bengals to beat up on. The only other division with such competitive depth was the NFC South, where the last place team (New Orleans) ended the year at 8-8.
I think that Mangini got a pretty raw deal in New York .... and can easily see him being successful elsewhere.
BINGO!
ah, but with the whole spygate issue, would Piolli be interested in Mangini???

i kept reading everywhere during spygate that mangini will probably be blackballed and he'll never be a hc again. i refuse to believe that mangini will be near the top of pioli's list since pioli was hurt because of spygate (loss of 1st rounder in addition to the sting/negativity of the betrayal) and he'd probably go with mcdaniels first. really, we don't need mangini. think about it, mangini was the "youngest" hc when he was signed. if anyone, pioli will be someone who knows how mcdaniels stacks up against mangini anyways. if anyone here doesn't think this is something that pioli hasn't been on top of, they're plain wrong. further, if pioli/mcdaniels keeps rac, we have some insurance in that mcdaniels has a resource. who'll know the players better than rac? that saves mcdaniels plenty of research time. all indications are that mcdaniels/mangini/pioli are all in very good terms with rac so there's no reason why they wouldn't trust rac anyways.

1. NE was 11-5 but it was against a very easy schedule....the AFC East this year probably had the biggest joke of a schedule ever...MIA is 11-5 after 1-15 and they (MIA) managed to play 1 Top15 defense in 16 games, lol (BAL btw which they lost and will lose again)..I have seen a lot of Pats games this season....their defense was just bad and the backups (hint --> draft) not there to fill in for the injuries
2. You like their 2007 and 2008 drafts? They are ok? Really?
They had 8 (!!) 2nd day picks in 2007 and most of them aren´t in the nfl anymore already...not even 1 worthy backup. In this years draft they selected CB Wheatley and OLB Crable in rounds 2 and 3 and both couldn´t hit the field with the number of injuries at both spots....they signed O´Neal, Colvin and Seau to fill in...even UDFA rookie Guyton was ahead of Crable and 4th round CB Wilhite ahead of Wheatley? wtf? those 2 look like busts already
In 2006 he wasted his 2nd on WR Jackson whom they cut already and followed that up with wasting 2 valuable mid round picks on 2 1-dimensional TEs in Thomas and Mills (both were considered later rounders)...all that with Watson (2004 1st rounder) and Graham on their roster?
2005 was a bomb of a draft...and somewhat masked and made up for the following 2 misses. Mankins, Hobbs, Kaczur, Sanders and Cassel...nice
2004 Wilfork in round 1 was great, Watson late 1st a big overdraft in hindsight since he´s oft injured and pretty mediocre at best. 2nd, 3rd and 4th rounder are out of the nfl for 2 years now...
Summary: I could go on...but it´s pretty much the same pattern: he hits on his 1st rounder (if Maroney qualifies??) and is pretty bad from there on out....lots of huge 2nd and 3rd round busts...too much for my liking....he is good at picking OL and DL...OL even in later rounds, that seems to be his strength...but he overdrafts a lot and seems as inept at drafting WR as Savage
I hope his FA-skills are MUCH better

Ytown is pretty much right on with that thinking... Mangini does appear to be solid....
The question that remains,,, what is his and Piolis relationship like? I keep thinking about Spygate...

I just do not have a good feeling about this....he does not seem to be above average at drafting....1 thing I like is the fact that he trades down or away for value in upcomind drafts (anti-Savage)....something we have not seen the Browns do
well i don't know if thats entirely fair....both teams situations were (are) vastly different....in cleveland we didn't have a solid core of starters....we had to get them, and get them quick....in ne they already have the solid core of starters, so they go for depth, and replace a starter here and there....
thats why when faced with injuries, our team crumbled..and a team like ne just keeps on rolling....
now i don't fault savage for the route he took, you have to win some games to stick around long enough to get to that depth building point....

So what if their schedule was easy? They still won with their backup QB and had more comp from Miami..
I showed you their 07 draft..why did they pick so low in those rounds??? The Pats were in the AFC championship ..so their record dictated where they drafted..low in almost all the rounds.

Spygate......Something tells me Bellieack is the guy, Pioli & Mangini might understand that even though many fingers pointed at Mangini, his actions were still when he was working under Bellichek, Pioli might understand the why's of Mangini's actions. Working under bellichek's umbrella is pretty intimidating and for a Asst. to refuse to do something could mean being fired and blackballed from coaching on all levels by bellichek, just a thought. Pioli and Mangini might just understand whats behind the story and leave it at that.

Despite what gets reported on the dong show, let's look at it from both sides of the fence.
The point you and dong pose could go that way. But if he were so supportive of Billicheck, why is looking at leaving NE?
It could easily go either way. Maybe he thinks Bill hung him out to dry by cheating. That Bill soiled his reputation by spygate.
So is it the cheater he's mad at? Or the one who pointed it out?
As much as dong would like to portray a different picture, do you get offended by murderers or the witnesses that get them convicted?
It could go either way. And nobody has anything of substance that I've seen to show which way Pioli looks at it.
But once again, if he's SO LOYAL to Billecheck, why is he looking to leave the Kraft family? And why is Lerner looking at interviewing Mangini? Would you interview both guys knowing one isn't willing to work with the other?
Nobody can truely say until we see how this thing pans out IMO
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

I agree, what we all have to remember also, no matter where these guys come from, or from under who's wing, they all still have thier own coaching style and thier own Ego's, many coachs are pretty down to earth, but realize these guys didnt make to hwere thier at by being yes men, they have thier own opinons and dont have problems voicing them, Yes many came from billachek, but he dosent control them, or own them,
Bellieack needs to remember that these men have helped build the pedistal he now stands on, and what student dosent wanna beat thier teacher.

Cleveland Browns will interview former Jets coach Eric Mangini by Mary Kay Cabot Tuesday December 30, 2008, 2:01 PM
CLEVELAND -- The Browns will interview fired New York Jets coach Eric Mangini soon, possibly today or Wednesday, a league source said today.
The Browns are also going hard after Patriots Executive Vice President Scott Pioli, who worked with Mangini in New England. The two were even in Cleveland together in 1995 and spent most of their careers together. But it remains to be seen what their relationship is following Spygate -- when Mangini accused the Patriots of taping the Jets defensive signals last year.
One league source said, "I think it could be worked out.''
Mangini is also still very close with Crennel from their time in New England. In fact, there was some talk that Crennel would join Mangini in New York if he kept his job with the Jets. If Mangini got the Browns job, it wouldn't be far-fetched to think he'd ask Crennel to stay on as defensive coordinator. Crennel indicated Monday that he would be open to that kind of situation, depending on the head coach.
Go Browns!!!

I don't like the whole Pioli-Mangini-Crennel thing....I like Pioli, but I want Spags or Schwartz. It's nice to be friends and all, but I'm concerned how that will play out when the shiznit hits the fan like it always does in Cleveland.

Yes...that would make sense..it would also eliminate the dysfunction the article mentioned..each enitity has someone to report to. If I'm Lerner ,he needs to stabilize his organization.

It's big risk, big reward.
Crennel is a great D-Coordinator. But how does switching from head coach to D-Coordinator work out when you bring in a head coach who isn't liked so much by his players.
I think that Mangini will show to be a good coach, but I would like him to hire a totally new coordinator rather than keep Crennel.

hey, i'm just speculating. that said, being loyal to billichick and wanting to further your career are not mutually exclusive. it's clear that coming here would be the next step in his career as he tries to build his own legacy by building a team with his own say instead of having the net that billichick made the final decision. anyone would want that opportunity if he believed in his ability.
that said, no one absolved billichick of spygate but the bigger issue is that it was betrayal by an assistant that owed everything to billichick. if that doesn't have any impact in pioli's decision-making, i'd be surprised. if pioli can overlook it, though, then there's obviously no issue. this is all speculation on all our parts until everything shakes out.

I'm totally opposed to RAC staying on in any manner or form. Both sides need a clean break. It's just time to cut losses and move on.

Clay,, I'm not sure I understand what your saying..
You make it sound as if the problem is when Mangini was the DC under Belichick..
That's not the strained relationship I'm speaking of... I'm talking about Mangini ratting on the Pats for Spygate...

If we go with a young HC I'd like to see us back him up with some experienced assistants like Baltimore did with Harbaugh. It had to help Harbaugh a great deal to have coaches like Cameron, Ryan and Rosburgh around.

Pioli seems as perfect a GM possible...I know that is Randy's #1 option. Hopefully he won't get out of Cleveland as they meet today...unless there is a signed contract in hand
Almost automatic will be the hiring of McDaniels who these two are supposedly very close and have dreamed of working together...That dream also often seemed to be Both of the working together to bring a Championship to the Browns
So if McDaniels is HC an experienced Coordinator is wanted.
Well guess who that is. HELLO RAC I don't care what you all think of him as a HC...but he is one heck of a DC.

I dont know enough about spy gate really, I guess from what I was reading people worried about Pioli & Mangini's being able to get along becuase of what happened with spy gate & Mangini blowing the whistle, From my point of view, they were both probebly put into that situation (by Bellieack ) so possibley from their point of views there ok with each other, knowing it was bellieack who anisiated the problems.

Maybe... If it comes down to Pioli and Mangini as the guys in charge,, we better hope they are ok with each other....
Aww.. Lerner isn't that stupid.. he's gonna know from talking to them if they could coexist.. If they can't.. one of them won't get the job.. pretty simple I guess.

Why Pioli-to-Browns is a sure thing
Don Banks...SI.com Scott Pioli is finally ready to make the jump from New England The Browns, fresh off 2008's debacle, are ready for a savior Pioli could bring Pats' Josh McDaniels to be new Browns coach Scott Pioli would be a good fit as general manager of the Cleveland Browns, where he was an employee from 1992 to '95.
The NFL's hiring and firing season can be a confusing swirl of speculation, conjecture and misinformation, but sometimes a marriage of team and candidate just makes too much sense not to happen. Like Scott Pioli becoming the next general manager of the Cleveland Browns.
At this point, all we definitively know is Pioli, New England's vice president of player personnel, has been given permission by the Patriots to interview for the Browns GM job, and that Cleveland owner Randy Lerner has made landing Pioli his top, full-steam-ahead priority. Though a specific timetable for Pioli's interview with the Browns is not yet known, I'd say any minute now is a reasonably accurate window. And it won't take long for the two sides to strike a deal. In fact, if Pioli is not the Browns new decision-maker by the end of the week, I'd be shocked.
My confidence in this particular case of match-making is based on many factors, not the least of which is these two: After years of being considered one of the league's best general manager candidates, Pioli is finally ready to make the jump from New England, should the right offer come along. And the Browns, after the debacle of their 2008 season, are most definitely ready to welcome a savior. That's why Lerner won't stop at anything to ensure that he makes Pioli "the right offer.''
Cleveland is by no means the perfect job for Pioli. I believe he'd rather be hired by an NFC team, if only to avoid the specter of competing against both Bill Belichick's Patriots and his father-in-law's Dolphins (Pioli is married to the daughter of Bill Parcells). But Pioli can't control the fact the short-sighted Lions opted to not even give him a phone call before they promoted Martin Mayhew to general manager Monday, or that St. Louis will go with Billy Devaney as a one-year GM while the franchise remains for sale.
When all is said and done with the game of general manager musical chairs unfolding in the NFL, Pioli is expected to interview with the Browns and probably the Chiefs, the other team that has him atop its wish list. And while Kansas City may be attractive to him given the Chiefs' patient and stable ownership situation, plus the easier assignment of competing in the AFC West, there's something that convinces me Cleveland will be Pioli's new place of employment.
Pioli's ties to the city can't be underestimated. He cut his NFL teeth working for the old Browns as a personnel assistant from 1992 to '95, on what turned out to be something of an all-star front office cast led by Belichick as head coach. He likes Cleveland, has a close friendship with Indians general manager Mark Shapiro and has long considered restoring the Browns to prominence.
It wouldn't hurt, of course, that Pioli might bring the Browns new head coach along with him from New England. Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is a native of Canton, Ohio, and Pioli and he as a package deal would mean another key hire steeped in the Patriot Way. That would allow the new Browns regime to hit the ground running without much of a transition or learning curve.
My guess is at this point Lerner really only has to sell Pioli on Lerner. The two know each other, but not well, and what each man has to determine in the course of an interview is how quickly a comfort zone develops between them. Because there's plenty of work to be done in Cleveland, where Pioli would be granted autonomy in personnel decision-making and likely command a salary in excess of $3 million per year.
Among the earliest decisions that would hit Pioli's desk would be how to get value of some sort for Derek Anderson, the team's former starting quarterback. Also, how to improve an offensive line that had been a strength in 2007 but finished this season as an obvious weakness. And which version of running back Jamal Lewis is the real one: the 1,300-yard model of 2007 or the struggling 1,000-yard model of 2008?
I'm sure Pioli isn't under any illusions about the last-place team he'd inherit in Cleveland. The 10-6 record of 2007 proved to be a mirage, and he knows he wouldn't have a roster ready to compete with the likes of anyone but Cincinnati in the AFC North. The Browns need to get younger and cheaper in several spots, but they have just four picks remaining in the 2009 draft thanks to moves made by former general manager Phil Savage, further limiting the speed and scope of Cleveland's rebuilding phase. And we haven't even mentioned yet what to do about either Braylon Edwards or Kellen Winslow.
Still, by the time the dust settles and the first weekend of 2009 is in the books, I expect Pioli and the Browns will have walked down the aisle together. After nine years of spectacular success in New England, Pioli needs a new challenge, and Lord knows the down-and-out Browns need Pioli's reputation for personnel acumen. That kind of common sense match-making and clarity is the way it's supposed to work in the NFL's hiring and firing season, and sometimes, amidst the speculation, conjecture and misinformation, it even does.
Go Browns!!!

I said this in another thread, but I think Ferentz might be a good coordinator candidate. Seems like none of the other names being thrown around would settle for a coordinator position (except Romeo ), but Ferentz is probably the biggest college coach being named. And why not let him work his way up to the eventual pro coaching job so many think he is destined to acheive.

First things first. I'm interested in Pioli - then, I want to let him do his job. If he wants to hire Mangini and considers him the best man for the job, then I've got to trust him.
I wonder if any of these interviews (especially Mangini and McDaniels) are being done with Pioli's recommendation.
And in that potential HC list, who is the minority candidate? Does keeping RAC on staff avoid that requirement?

Interested in Pioli ... Just say no to Mangini ...
water...I heard on STO (Sports Talk Ohio), on the program, All Bets are Off, that Mangini is meeting with Lerner today, in New York.
It's been said by me and even those in the know, that Pioli/Mangini team would be unlikely due to the spygate thing. Just what this news of Mangini being interviewed by Lerner might mean...?...I can't figure out at this time.
Maybe the rift between Pioli and Mangini has been patched up or maybe Mangini is being interviewed because of the convenience of both men being in New York and available.

Or maybe the media started saying it so much that they just assumed it was true. There may have been a rift, but probably not that big of a deal.
you had a good run Hank.

I have a tendency to look at our team through the Division .. I don't want RAC back running the " D " .. All I am interested in is a guy who runs a Bal or a Pit. type " D " Period ! As the owner I would make that paramount in my selection of a GM and or HC... Nothing , absolutly nothing to talk about until that point is settled .. And I don't like Mangini at all as a HC. for my Browns ...
Why is Lerner talking to HC. prospects before he hires a GM .. Going to hire a Coach and then the GM ????

I'm all for getting as many talented coaches on our staff as possible.
in accordance to that and the fact that it is seeming more likely that we get Pioli as GM very soon, I would offer the following setup as best case scenario (and I think Schwartz is a legit top-candidate...but the overall strength here is fantastic)
GM Pioli HC McDaniels (since Pats can block him making lateral move to be our OC) DC Mangini (his focus was on secondary) Asst. DC / Front-7 RAC (making him the perfect complement to Mangini) OC Brian Schott (not sure if Jets have released him from his contract yet)
Then, we'd still obviously have a lot of coaching holes to fill in, but that is quite a start there.

I'm guessing that it won't happen that way..Mangini wasn't bad as a HC of the Jets.. in fact, it seemed as if he was pretty good.. someone will over him a HC job.
McDaniel is the flavor of the month for a coordinator to move up to HC.. so someone will offer him that,.. maybe us. Don't know.
RAC is gonna wanna know who his boss is... with Pioli, Mangini and McDaniels,,,, it could get confusing. My guess is that he would move on.

So, what you are saying is that you want to completely blow up not only the coaching staff, but the roster as well and not have a chance for success for quite a few years to fit your philosphy? We do not have a smash mouth, grind it out set of offensive personnel. Even Joe Thomas isn't suited for that style. So, we can either go with something that's proven successful, acquire a FO and staff that knows that style and can make it successful, or we can scrap everything and hear the fans whining for another 2-3 years while we overhaul everything.
I'd rather get a coach that can adapt to personnel that is available and utilize it to be successful. This isn't the 70s anymore and football is changing from 3 yards and a cloud of dust.
