Ravens | Scott letting team match New York's offer
Fri, 27 Feb 2009 11:42:38 -0800

Rich Cimini, of the New York Daily News, reports unrestricted free-agent LB Bart Scott (Ravens) has called the Baltimore Ravens to give them a chance to match the offer he has received from the New York Jets, according to a source.

Nothing is done until the ink is dried.

"Reached an agreement with" means nothing. The only thing that matters is "Has signed with".

Vrabel becomes a Chief.

Chiefs get LB Vrabel from Patriots
By John Clayton

The Kansas City Chiefs were the youngest teams in football last year but new general manager Scott Pioli wanted to install some veteran leadership.

Pioli accomplished that task by trading an undisclosed draft choice to the Patriots for 33-year-old linebacker Mike Vrabel.

Vrabel is one of the leaders of the Patriots defense, and it will be his job to teach a good work ethic to the Chiefs.

In trading Vrabel, the Patriots cleared $3.35 million in cap room.

It seems like there's a lot of talk about people going to the Jets, but then it's not as "final" as they make it seem.

Kemoeatu to the Jets. Oh, wait...

Scott to the Jets. Oh, wait...

NY media jumping the gun a bit???

Didn't Scott do the exact same thing to us when he was a FA before?

We shouldn't be surprised by that, nor should we really be upset by it. We shouldn't make a big splash in FA just because it's the FA period. If there isn't someone that can immediately come in and upgrade a position, no use overpaying for someone else.

I remember him using us in a similar way. I'm not sure if we ever actually gave him an offer. I do remember him making a comment about Cleveland Stadium being built on a garbage dumb this past season.

I agree. It is such a departure from how Savage ran the team. I was just pointing that out.

other than the biggest trade of the year so far.

I'm glad we're not chasing after these big name free agents with overpriced contracts this year. It was alright the first few years we did it with Savage because we had so much cap room and so little talent, but now that the balance between caproom and talent has closed a good bit it's nice to know we look like the draft is gonna be our building tool from now on.

Wow. That seems awfully cheap for a player of his ability. I guess when people know you need to move someone the price drops. Kinda like what would happen if we were actively shopping DA.

Yeah i think last year they were wanting a second for him. I would believe it has more to do with them wanting to clear up some salary space.

His ability? He didn't even start last year. Not that he isn't a decent corner, and he's not very old, but he couldn't beat our Sheldon Brown for the starting spot.

That conditional pick in 2010 is reportedly as high as a 2nd based on playing time.

So while not cheap, still a decent value.

Jason Brown signs with Rams...

Quote:

In what should no longer be a surprise to anyone in South Florida, free agent center Jason Brown has agreed to terms with the St. Louis Rams, an NFL source told The Miami Herald.

Brown, one of the top centers available, did not visit with any other teams.

The Dolphins instead focused their attention on grabbing a center/guard for less money and less profile by signing former Cowboys lineman Joe Berger.

The Dolphins did not host any other players on visits Friday in what was a rather quiet start to free agency for Miami.

The team instead has made it clear it plans to fill several of its needs with better-valued players later in free agency and through the draft.

So far so good for free agency even though we haven't signed anyone.

Brown and Bart Scott are out of the division.

And it also looks like Ray Lewis and T.J. Houshmanzadeh might be on their way out as well.

Not bad.

Was surfing the web and ran across this little tidbit.

Quote:

After quickly patching a couple small holes on offense with career backups who project as starters, the Broncos have gone about overhauling their defense with proven starters.

The Broncos have signed free-agent safety Renaldo Hill, a starter the previous three seasons with the Miami Dolphins, to a four-year, $10 million contract with a $3 million guarantee. The deal is near identical to the contract former New England receiver Jabar Gaffney received from the Broncos.

Hill and Gaffney are represented by the same agent, Drew Rosenhaus.

Meanwhile, the Broncos are engaged in serious negotiations with free-agent linebacker Andra Davis, according to a source close to negotiations. Discussions have focused on a two- or three-year deal.

A six-year starter in Cleveland, Davis, 30, is an inside linebacker from the 3-4 system who was second on the Browns with 90 tackles last season and has averaged 103 tackles the past six seasons.

The Broncos also were scheduled to bring in Philadelphia safety Brian Dawkins for a visit today. While every free agent player who visited the Broncos today arrived with the parameters of a deal already in place, there's a chance Dawkins could give the Eagles another chance. Dawkins, 35, has spent his entire 13-year career in Philadelphia, earning seven Pro Bowl honors.

Dawkins, Hill and Davis would headline the Broncos' free-agent group that also includes running backs Correll Buckhalter and J.J. Arrington, Gaffney and longsnapper Lonie Paxton. Like Gaffney and Hill, Buckhalter and Arrington already have signed four-year deals while the Broncos agreed to a five-year contract with Paxton.

Should Dawkins and Davis sign, the Broncos would continue scouring the free-agent pool for a starting right cornerback, nosetackle, at least one defensive end and possibly a backup quarterback.

San Francisco defensive tackle Ronald Fields, another Rosenhaus client, also could visit the Broncos today.

There are always quite a few different "Free Agent Tracker" sites out there each year but I think the one on nfl.com is the best one to reference if you're looking for a specific player.

It lists alphabetically, and has Position, Status (RFA, UFA, Franchise), Ht/Wt, and years in the league:

I think the only big name we were targeting was Derrick Ward...and apparently he's not a 1st tier commodity anyways. We'll let him stew for a while and then make him a fair offer. Let it set in that he's not going to make top 5 RB money.

Other than that we should go for 2nd tier guys. There's only a Hundred plus FAs to choose from

i am wondering myself!!! is ward scheduled for any visits with anyone... and how about the safety from NE that it says we are interested in... I wouldnt mind trading others for Draft picks... BE if we could get a 2nd and 4th this year i would do it... there is no way he will resign with us...... Coles ? it depends on his price... I though would not trade rogers at all....? unless we get a top 20 draft pick this yr for him....mmm????

Jason Brown was one guy I had hoped we would look at, along with Bart Scott and Chris Canty. Matt Birk is still out there, but he's 32. I know there are some good Centers coming out in the draft, but I like having a veteran at C. Maybe Fraley won't look so bad if we can upgrade at RG.

Dolphins' Goodman to visit Broncos and Browns

BY JEFF DARLINGTON
jdarlington@MiamiHerald.com

Cornerback Andre Goodman, the Dolphins' lone remaining free agent starter, has scheduled his first two visits with other NFL teams: the Denver Broncos and the Cleveland Browns.

In a text message to the Miami Herald, Goodman said he would visit Denver today and Cleveland on Sunday. The chances of him resigning with the Dolphins appear unlikely but not entirely out of the question.

If Goodman's trip to Denver goes well, he could quickly reunite with former Dolphins safety Renaldo Hill, who signed a four-year deal with the Broncos that will earn him $10 million with a $3 million signing bonus.

Goodman and Hill were both starters in the secondary for the Dolphins last season.

Nah with the extra 2nd there is a good chance we will get our Center of the future in the top 50

too much money and he was just OK and young...nothing extra special.

Now he is what? Top 3 paid Centers in the NFL??? Sorry bad bang for the buck.

Mangini and specifically Kokinis where explicit that they are pretty much done with the building through FAgency. Oh we will fill our needs with young 2nd tier guys but not big players at all. I'm pretty sure we are close to 27-30 mil now in cap space.

Started at 17mil
NFL added 2009 adjustment and every teams cap was raised...missed the exact amount though so anyone who can show it - I'd appreciate it.

Trading KW2 gives us 3.6 additional cap space?

We are not in a mess regarding the cap...even if there was not adjustment and I got that completely wrong we are 20 mil above the cap.

But we will no longer be big splashes in the FA market. Possibly in the future when we are in that ONE PLAYER AWAY stage???

I think we are keeping our cap relegated so that we can resign players. BE being the first. He's much more valuable to this team than KW2. At least until we get a clear picture on the New CBA when it comes along and spells thing out for us in planning.

On the horizon...will Stallworth be given his walking papers opening more cap space up? Hard call cause some think he was given a Show me contract last year and if not happy we easily get rid of him. Some think he has a poison pill in his contract making it impossible for us to release him. But if its doable then we are talking about more room to our cap and we can buy a FA WR if you notice nobody is knocking down any doors in those WR areas. So that tells me they won't be that expensive.

Andre Goodman played well last year, I think he would be a good signing. He a veteran, but is turning 31 this year so he's not ancient. Definitely an upgrade over Cousins. I would really like to sign him.

COWBOYS PICK UP KITNA FOR HENRY
Posted by Mike Florio: Saturday, February 28, 2009 4:32 PM
Two days after cutting veteran Brad Johnson and one day after watching Brooks Bollinger become a free agent, the Dallas Cowboys have addressed their needs at the quarterback position by swinging a deal for Jon Kitna of the Lions.

The Cowboys announced the move moments ago.

Kitna, a 12-year veteran, landed on injured reserve during the 2008 season under circumstances suggesting that he really didn't have a season-ending injury. The fact that the Lions got anything in exchange for Kitna is a positive, given that they undoubtedly would have cut him at some point.

In return, the Cowboys have given up starting cornerback Anthony Henry, who started all 16 games in 2008.

Both players are in the last years of their deals. Kitna is due to earn a base salary of $1.95 million, and Henry will receive a base salary of $2.6 million.
