Purp,

Don't be bashful about making it known what the site costs. I did not even know that the pay pal had been set up and that you had the equipment costs that you do, until I read this thread.

I am sure that if you let it be known that the money is needed to run the site, we as a community will not allow this site to go away.

Honestly, most people on the internet do not think about the cost and upkeep to run a site like this on the side. I think it would be good to have atleast one week a year where we had a stickied thread in the tailgate and or Pure football running a donation marathon. Do it on a peak off season time frame either after the draft or during the preseason for maximum exposure without entering into the season. Make it known the cost of the site maintenance and equipment overhead and have a running total each night of where we are in terms of reaching the goal. Maybe even make it a locked thread so that there can be no bullying to get people to donate, but make the information available. I am sure that we as community will not let this site disappear.

I think it's nice that 26 of you donated $5.00 each, with me bringing up the balance.

Seriously, though, thanks a lot PPE. If I didn't have a kid on the way, I'd likely be forking over some more serious dough. But, I have to be able to afford all my caviar and Crown Royal.

Finally a good excuse.

Caviar. Ugh.

Better off just donating that money.

As most of ya know, I am no computer Einstein. I know what paypal is but I am old school and will pay with a money order just like I do on that auction site.

Purp, if you will pm me a p.o. box or an address to send money to, I will kick over 10 bucks. I like this site and will help with what I can. Doesn't sound like much, but all of us together, it will add up. I thank you for starting this site.

I know I've had major problems many times over the past couple of days. I'm just trying to be patient.

I will admit to having been somewhat of a "lurker" on this board as well as the old board. I do visit this board though every day and I don't what compelled me today to check out the Fan Feedback forum.

Purp, I wanted to let you know through my first post that I chipped in to try and help out. I probably won't post much but I would like to see this board stay up and running and you shouldn't have to do it alone.

Thanks to you and the regular posters that keep me coming here for all my Browns info.

David

I really don't feel comfortable giving out numbers, but I'm gonna do it anyway so that hopefully folks will understand where things are at:

I think Purp said the new equipment is around $2k. I doubt our cheap asses got close to that.

I'm up to just over $2,300 on it and am looking at a minimum of another $300 just to get it shipped to and installed in the new datacenter.
It's all been paid for up front out of pocket (with the help of the current donations) with the hopes that the donations and such would backfill.

All parts have been ordered and are in hand or en route to be here by Wednesday. The majority of the machine was assembled last evening, actually.
If you wanna see it, here are some pics I took last night to show a few friends:
Server Pic 01
Server Pic 02
Server Pic 03
Server Pic 04

What you see there is a Supermicro 2U rackmount server case, a Supermicro dual Socket771 motherboard, two 2.33GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon processors, eight 2GB Fully Buffered ECC DDR2 DIMMs for a total of 16GB of RAM. The add-on card you see is a SIMLP-IPMI card for remote management - as long as there is power to the machine, even if it is turned off, I will be able to control it and have KVM-over-IP. Then, there are hot swap trays for 8 hard drives. We will be running 6 of them, Seagate 7200.11 750GB, in a RAID 10 -- and there will be two more drives (yet to be purchased) that will be in the last two bays as "cold" spares so that I won't need to ship a drive in the event of a failure.

As a comparison to the hardware we are currently on:

The current machine is a single-core Athlon64 3500+ with 1GB of ram and only two 250GB hard drives.
We will now have 8 cores and 16GB ram and 6 active drives.

It is a quantum-leap ahead in performance capacity.

I hope he gets enough to do things they way he wanted to... it will only make the board better....

I'm a stubborn S.O.B. ... it'll get done the way I want it, no matter what. It's just a matter of how much of the burden gets shared.

To date: There have been 27 donors and they have contributed a total of 712.01.

To be completely honest and transparent, the number of donors is much lower than I thought it would be... however, the total amount donated thus far from that lower number astounds me, and is really very touching. There is no way I could have gotten as far as I have with this without those donations. I could have come close, but there is no way I could have gotten it done already... we'd still be probably two months out from getting to this point if I had to do it all on my own.
On the behalf of EVERYONE here - A huge Thank You to all who have given.

Wow.. That is a machine.. i wish I had that as my desktop.. but anyways what operating system are you going to running that on?

VMWare ESXi, then Windows Server 2003 x64 for the web & database stuff and a smaller Windows Server 2003 (x86) VM for Exchange Server 2003 (Exch2k3 doesn't run in a x64 environment, even with WoW).

Doing the VM's also improves disaster recovery.

Also... the machine is also a little more powerful than those specs now as I recently added (will be in my hands this afternoon, actually) an Areca ARC-1220 x8 SATA II controller and with it, all 8 drives will be run in a RAID-6. It'll give me the balance between fault tolerance and screaming performance that I'm looking for.
