If that happens I am sure he'l find away to be called for holding one last time some way some how. Losing him really wouldn't bother me, I didn't like the signing from day one, so if we part ways I don't think it will hurt that much, he can be replaced by just about any RT in the league starter or backup available or quite possibly just some guy with a pulse, someone within these restraints would work.

2. then guys like Toad saying Joe would have been "lucky" to have been a serviceable 3rd WR and that he was worth no more than league minimum for that reason ... when in fact they have no idea what Joe can bring to the table health wise ....
There's more to it than that, and I'd think you'd have figured out that Tucker's restructure continues to play a role here.
In the grand scheme of things, it's hard to justify asking Tuck to take veteran minimum, but then settle for giving more to Jurevicius. Talk about sending mixed messages.
Above and beyond that, expecting a 34-year old, worn-down receiver to come back and be worth more than veteran minimum after sitting out a year then having 7 knee surgeries is a gamble not worth taking. Frankly, I don't care if he was willing to take $1.2 million, as asking Tucker to take veteran minimum but not Jurevicius would cause bigger problems.
Besides, don't play that "you don't know all the facts" crapola card with me. You go there all the time bro
Oh yeah, forgot to add your just bitter because you don't know if Quinn can throw it deep enough to get it to receivers who aren't TE's or 6'5 possession guys

So we'd be willing to gamble on im for 850k but not 1.2 ... OK .. cause that 400k in the grand sceme of things is so important .. *LOL* .. your only actual non Toad spin point here is asking Tuck to do it and not Joe ... and even that has quite a bit of spin to it .. both of these players have had there agents gauge the interest they would get from other teams .. i believe u even mentioned that somewhere else ... *LOL* .. Joe obviously has some value out there and would like to pursue it .. where Tuck either had no value or decided he did want to stay here for what ever reason ... unlike U I do not know ... and unlike U I will not act like i do ... U know I wasnlt going to even post this but it is just so U ... I had to ... Quote:

Don't be surprised if we either hear that he has suddenly restructured or he's released. They have been trying to restructure him for awhile now and he's been kicking & screaming, so to speak, not to. I think the roster bonuses are due this weekend so the timing would be right.

I am a big fan of JJ. I knew his career was over when he didn't make it to the field last year. Hopefully, I'm wrong.

Perhaps. Time will tell. Some team may be desperate enough for a 3rd down receiver that they are willing to overpay. Since we're in a rebuilding program here, it's not worth it for this team to overpay. *shrug* Different teams have different needs.
You also need to take into consideration how having a re-injured Joe on this team would hurt the receiving corp depth. It's not like we can carry 7 receivers in case Joe and Stallworth (he's still on the damned team?!?) get hurt again. That's part of the big picture.

Can't see it happening. He's over paid but we don't have many options at this point. Get him a good guard and he'll look much better.

Honestly, doesn't it boil down to this.....If JJ was willing to take a sizable pay cut (even if it wasn't down to league minimum) and the Browns still cut him either they don't think he's healthy or they're just cleaning house to clean house.
Now, he may not be healthy. But couldn't we find that out inside of 2 weeks of training camp?
And please don't tell me this is a money thing. We're far from being over the cap. And while we've signed some decent filler players I hardly think they've broken either the monetary bank or the talent bank, so to speak.
Obviously, JJ wasn't going to be here very much longer. But now, unless we use our first pick on a WR, which is a fairly dumb proposition, we have no one who we know can catch a pass. Braylon might snap out of his funk but I don't know that you can count on that.
Sorry, I'd cut Stallworth in a heartbeat before I'd cut JJ. Hell, just on past performance I think you can count on Stallworth missing at least 8 games.

Based on the reports that say they approached him about a pay-cut, it is about money. If they thought he wasn't going to be healthy or just wanted to clean house, they'd have cut him long-ago.
As for taking a receiver at 5, I'm a FIRM believer in Crabtree, regardless of any so-called "conventional wisdom" that says you don't take a receiver that high. I was a firm believer in Roy Williams, and he put up some very good numbers on a very bad team. I view Crabtree as the next iteration of Chad Johnson (from a physical standpoint, not a mental one ). If we took him, I wouldn't be displeased at all. In fact, unless Curry is there, Crabtree is probably my #1 choice. That can clearly change after the combine, but for now, that's where I'm at.
Keep in mind that REGARDLESS of whether or not we'd kept Joe, we STILL needed a receiver badly, and would have been stOOpid to rely upon Joe's health, just as we're stOOpid if we're planning on relying upon Tucker's health.

i've started to warm up to the idea of crabtree, if raji and curry are taken, at number 5 but here are two concerns:
1) the guy is supposed to be a vertical threat but was measured at 6' 1", not the listed 6' 3" 2) with that stress fracture, he could do no measurements (yes the 40 is overrated but not the broad jump or the drills) nor could he run routes and do any catches. given the unknowns, how can we justify him at #5? i'm asking because i haven't seen him play and i know he's been a highly talked about prospect.

I'm confused. Kokinis and Mangini are both football guys and they are running the team. How can you say they're not football guys? Both have been part of winning organizations.
Joe didn't want to go to training camp and be cut. The front office also is giving him an opportunity to and another job by releasing him so early. I'm not sure how you can condemn the front office without knowing what actually occurred.

You're right to be cautious.
I have my own beliefs based on what I've seen over the years and what I believe I know. Having watched Crabtree for a couple of years now (primarily because I've been forced to watch TTU on TV so much) I think I have a good grasp on him. Everyone else should be cautious.
However, for me, I'm beginning to have to decide what risks I'd want and which one's I wouldn't. It looks like Curry will be gone, and we have no need for a QB or a LT. That leaves Orakpo or Crab. Given the choice, Orakpo has more questions for me than Crab, so I'm favoring Crab. I won't demand that others take my word for it. I'm simply stating why I feel the way I do.

between the pass rushers and crab, i think crab would be the easier choice, particularly if we're intent on shipping edwards. that said, can you
1) explain what you like about crabtree? was he a burner? an all arounder? is he a "dynamic" receiver in that he makes the tough grabs?
2) elaborate why raji, the dt from boston college, wouldn't be in consideration? or are you assuming he's going to be gone for sure?

I have seen little of Crabtree. I have seen considerable amounts of Heyward-Bay and Hakeem Nicks... I like both of them. I think both of them were hampered by less than stellar QB play and very inconsistent offenses in general so both are better than what their stats indicate.... I am not a technician when it comes to breaking down route running and the finer points of playing the position so I'll leave that to somebody else to go copy what one of the draft sites says and pretend like they already "knew" it....
But if I thought there was a chance to get Heyward-Bay or Nicks with our second pick, I might get upset at taking Crabtree with the #5....

I'm not up for an injured WR that's never played in the NFL at #5 money,....
While I understand the JJ move, I am in the camp that says he should have been given a shot,....HOWEVER,....the other side is, if he REALLY wanted to play he would have taken the associated cut (like Tucker). Since we do not know all of the 'real' discussion, I'm going to assume the FO knows what it is doing. JJ DID not contribute last season, has decided not to display that he can contribute this season, and I think we can all agree that we NEED CONTRIBUTORS.
Have a good retirement, Joe.

EXCLUSIVE: Browns Release Kevin Shaffer
By Site Staff
Posted Mar 12, 2009
Scout.com's Adam Caplan reports this evening that Cleveland Browns right tackle Kevin Shaffer has been released following a failure to reach agreement on a new contract.
When the Cleveland Browns released Joe Jurevicius last evening after failing to reach a new contract agreement, a message was sent.
That message got even clearer today, as multiple sources have informed Scout.com's Adam Caplan that the team has failed to come to an agreement with RT Kevin Shaffer, and that the offensive lineman will be released.
Emails to the team requesting confirmation were not yet returned.
Shaffer signed with the Browns as the team’s left tackle in 2006, sliding over to the right tackle slot in 2007 after the team drafted LT Joe Thomas with the third pick in the draft, a move that the player initially disliked.
Shaffer was an expensive signing for then-GM Phil Savage. Inking the Falcons tackle to a six-year deal with $12 million in guaranteed money. Savage was gambling that Shaffer would continue the development seen over the first few years of his career.
After being part of the one of the league’s best offensive lines in 2007, Shaffer’s performance ebbed in 2008, in part, perhaps, due to the loss of Ryan Tucker at the right guard position next to him. The combination of Rex Hadnot and Shaffer manning the right side was visibly less effective than the year before.
The team, clearly viewed the contact out of line with the tackle’s performance. If Shaffer is released, there will be some significant salary cap impacts both this year and in the future. While the team will save $1.455 million of cap space by cutting Shaffer, they will also assume $4.56 of "dead" cap space due to bonuses rolled forward into this year.
The release makes the Browns thin at yet another position. Ryan Tucker, if healthy, may be a candidate to return to the right tackle position
A source close to the player has told Scout.com that the door is not entirely closed to his return. At this point, however, the big right tackle is free to seek employment with other teams

Ok.....What I saw in Crab......
College corners didn't have the ability to get him off of press-coverage. Granted, he'll have to get better because the best corners he faced in college aren't as good as most of the corners he'll face every Sunday, but that's a given (so why did I feel the need to say it? *L*).
Crab was FAR more quick than fast. In that regard, he's alot like Edwards. Remember, Edwards wasn't a burner, but was quick in and out of cuts. I view Crab as a young version of Chad Johnson in that regard, because while Chad isn't a burner, he's so quick in and out of cuts that it's damned-hard to stay on him. While he isn't as imposing as Edwards, he's a physical receiver at 6'1 and about 215. He's young enough to where he can put on another 5-10 pounds and not lose an inch of burst. Unlike Edwards, he catches with his hands, not his body. Those hands are big, so it's nothing for him to snatch the ball out of the air. He also ran a ton of crossing patterns in college so he's not afraid to go across the middle, unlike Edwards. I've also seen him go up and get balls at their highest point, much like Calvin Johnson. He also doesn't have a primma-donna reputation such as what Edwards had coming out.
The downsides are about straight-line speed, experience, and routes. Much of the positives being given out revolve around "great route running." That's bunk. He worked in a spread offense where he didn't have to go straight-up against corners all the time. He'll need a little work on that to get better. He also isn't a true burner. Then there's the fact he's only got a couple of years of experience.
To be blunt, there's only one receiver over the past 15-years that I"ve seen come out who I thought more of and that was Calvin Johnson. I put Crab between him and Roy Williams in terms of ability and production coming out.
So why do I rate him higher than Raji? Because I think we have a greater need at WR than at DT or DE. We have exactly ONE "reliable" *cough* *cough* receiver on this team right now. That's Edwards We have numerous DT's and DE's on this team. If all things are equal, WR is a greater need IMHO, which is why I go with Crab.
Now trade Rogers and my opinion might change, but for now, that's where I stand.

I saw 3 of his games and Crabtree reminds me of L. Fitzgerald. Not super fast, but somehow produces TDs. Awesome hands.

cool, fair enough. thanks for the read. i certainly wouldn't mind a physical receiver who could actually catch the ball. would make for a good vertical game, like 2007.
i somewhat agree with dcdawgfan though, that heyward-bay wouldn't be bad if we knew we could get him in round two. he'd be perfect if we were set on the short pass, YAC with quinn at the helm. i guess my biggest concern with crab is that, at #5, where there have been receivers taken like fitz and calvin johnson, my concern is that 2 inch difference in height. combine that with an unknown at 40 and vertical and other tests, and i'm a lot less comfortable with the move. i also view raji as a rare prospect where, even if we have a lot of dlinemen, we could still add him. to me, it seems easier to find a good receiver outside of round one than a good lineman, but that's just me.

how do you figure? steve smith, TO, jerricho cotchery, marques colston are some that come to mind immediately. further: Quote:
In the last 10 drafts, only 14 of the 39 receivers drafted in the first round (36 percent) established themselves as solid, consistent NFL starters. The best place to find a receiver is in the second through fifth rounds of the draft.

what do you mean?
You misinterpreted what I originally said--you incorrectly read my post to mean I disagreed with your premise concerning WR and OLmen,...when I AGREED and indicated so with a
Please re-read. "No it ain't" ---"just you." Got it ??
Mulligan awarded; you're welcome.

j/c follow-up article. looks like JJ's knee isn't ready. certainly isn't worth 2.4 million Quote:
Before receiving the Doug Dieken Humanitarian Award from the Cleveland Touchdown Club on Monday night, Joe Jurevicius, disappointed yet far from defeated, talked about the lingering hurt of being released by the Browns last week.
"Whether I'm happy or not, the decision has been made," he said. "It's a little difficult walking around town right now, but I have nothing to be ashamed of. I put everything out there I had on the field and in the community in terms of being proud of being from the city of Cleveland.
"This too shall pass, but it's not easy. It was their decision. It is a business. I have to sit back now and look at what options present themselves to me and go from there."
The crowd packing the LaCentre Banquet Facility in Westlake for the Touchdown Club awards dinner didn't look at the Browns dumping Jurevicius as a business decision.
Dieken, the former Browns tackle and current radio commentator, introduced Jurevicius with lavish praise about what a good teammate and citizen Jurevicius is.
Jurevicius intentionally arrived after the dinner started so he would not be a distraction. He entered the spacious banquet room through a side door and walked to the podium. When he was finished speaking, he left through the same door.
Polite applause started slowly and then grew in volume. After a few seconds, men and women started to rise, and before long, Jurevicius was getting a standing ovation. Twice, he approached the microphone, but the crowd wasn't finished showing its appreciation. The ovation lasted 32 seconds. In awards banquet time, that is an eternity.
Jurevicius told the young players and those in high school and college to make sure they play football for the right reason with the goal of money far down the line.
He lamented not being able to finish his career with the Browns.
He also talked about how much it meant to be with them for three seasons after growing up in Timberlake and graduating from Lake Catholic High School.
"My two greatest memories playing for the Browns are going by the Muni parking lot and seeing fans wearing my jersey and being a captain for my hometown team," he said. "My greatest honors in my career are playing in three Super Bowls and wearing a 'C' on my chest with the Cleveland Browns."
Jurevicius vowed to continue doing everything he can to play somewhere in 2009. But his right knee is not cooperating. He has been through six operations since a staph infection developed in January of 2008 after a routine clean-out procedure on his right knee at The Cleveland Clinic.
Jurevicius said no tryouts with other teams have been lined up yet.
"My knee will be OK," he sad. "There's still work to be done. It's seven surgeries. I have my work to do, and I'm not going to shy away from the challenge.
"If I do play again, I'm going at it full battle, and that's what I'm trying to do right now. If I don't, what do I possibly have to hang my head about? Eleven years being involved with the NFL and three Super Bowls, and I still have the desire and passion to go ahead and play."
Jurevicius signed with the Browns in 2006 after eight years with the Giants, Buccaneers and Seahawks. He went to the Super Bowl once with each team and won a championship with the Buccaneers.
Jurevicius caught 40 passes in 2006 and in 2007, when the Browns finished 10-6, he caught 50 passes for 614 yards and three touchdowns. Twenty-nine of his catches were on third down, and 22 of them were for first downs. After those catches, Jurevicius would point emphatically downfield to signal first down.
The Browns said cutting Jurevicius was a difficult decision. He was supposed to make $2.4 million in 2009 and receive a $250,000 bonus last Friday. Jurevicius said he was willing to take a steep pay cut, but he and the Browns could not come to an agreement.
Fan support for Jurevicius, 34, has been overwhelming the last five days. He said that makes what happened easier to accept.
"I'm thankful for being a Clevelander and being around fans that have been that supportive," he said. "That makes it an easier pill to swallow. The support has been awesome."
It was suggested since 2009 might be his last year and the Browns are obviously rebuilding that maybe Coach Eric Mangini figured it would be better for the future to take their lumps with a younger player now.
"I don't know what their decisions were," Jurevicius said. "Obviously, I am an older guy, but it's not my unwillingness to go across the middle or my unwillingness to put the team first. And it's not because I can't catch the football."
Three days after Jurevicius was released, Donte Stallworth killed a pedestrian while driving his Bentley in Miami Beach. The accident is under investigation.
Jurevicius had no comment on the accident from a Browns perspective. He was sad for the victim, 59-year-old Mario Reyes.

Class.....totally Class
Even though I understand the buisness side of things, I was still hoping to see J.J. back out on the field in a Browns helment.
J.J. is a Brown, he's earned it on & off the field,
