I used to think NASCAR was really dumb until Shep brainwashed me.

That's so cute.

Make fun of it all you want. I make fun of it too a lot of the time. Some people take it WAY too serious. Believe me, I saw some of the marks that still thought it was real.

It's NOT a sport but to say the participants aren't athletes (NRTU) is just flat out ignorant.

I don't consider it a sport but I think they are athletes – it certainly takes an athletic person to do most of the stuff they do. Guys like the Hulkster weren't very athletic.... all he did was his stupid leg drop... but plenty of wrestlers are athletic. I think they have to be.

For the most part, the new breed of pro wrestlers have to be athletic. The appearances of slow plodding guys like Andre the Giant and fatties like Dusty Rhodes with man boobs are few and far between.

Hence the appearance of all of the anabolic steroids. Vince McMahon's right hand man, Pat Patterson, likes his "boys" looking good....if ya know what I mean.

You know what I find funny about this thread....the NASCAR fans and the WWE fans acting like they're offended because they think we're dissing them by saying they're not a sport.

No offense at all. I just happen to personally think racing is a sport. I've been too up close and personal with it (working events, crewing for drivers) to happen to feel that racing is not a sport. I'm including ALL racing, not just that left turn only (except for twice a year) stuff that is NASCAR. Road racing and NASCAR are a completely different skill set in driving, and it's more than just the addition of right turns.

I used to get offended when people dismissed racing as not a sport. Then I just decided to let you all continue to believe in your ignorance. Actually, it's more that I know that no matter what I tell you, you aren't changing your mind. Really, for me, it took getting as up close to racing as I am to discover my own answer about whether or not racing is a sport. Prior to that, I called it an activity. Now I know the truth of it.

Nascar is a different kind of sport...but it IS a sport...it requires a physical skill. it's competetive and it's not SCRIPTED! i think it's a sport!

How about the extreme sports? Heck, it even has "sports" in the name.

Skateboarding
Surfing
Biking
Motocross
Snowboarding
Skiing
Snowmobiling

Essentially, anything in the X-games.

DRAG RACING? that isn't a sport...u drive .25miles, granted really fast...but it's not a sport...does it really require a physical skill? i don't think so...NASCAR requires a lot of skills because you are going extremely fast for a long periods of time...it requires brains and physical conditioning.

all of that is sports...god i can't believe i'm saying it...but even ice skating is a sport. Although...one could argue that these games are judged by people...and that can influence the outcome. yah these are games...not sports...anything that has judges IMO isn't a sport.

hmm...i didn't think about that rowdy...good point...Boxing is just so fin' brutal i forget it's judged lol...but it still has some sort of science behind it doesn't it? like how many hits a guy lands on the other guy...

Ice skating and anything that requires a "trick" to be judged is very unique...because one judge might give a trick 9 and the other might give a 5.....

DAMMIT why did u have to bring up boxing lol...this ruins my theory.

The scoring for boxing is more formulaic than ice skating, but it can still infuriate people. It isn't an exact science. Knockdowns will take a point off the victim, but if no one falls down, a 10/9 9/10 for the round can go either way. I'm not as familiar with MMA scoring. I have a feeling that could be erratic at times.

I think MMA is somewhat similar. Rounds can sway either way. They also go on the 10 point system.

The WWEs winner is predetermined before the outcome, so its not a sport. But then again, if you go by that, then the NBA isnt a sport either.

I dont have the definition of sport but the WWE is mere entertainment. The WWE matchups are not even a contest of any kind. The matches outcomes are practiced like a play. Their strength, agility, athleticism and durability are real (with the help of steroids), as is their risk to injury. But having a predetermined outcome is in no way a sport.

Not really. You talk about what's going to happen during a match before the match but you don't practice it out. During the match, you will tell the other worker what to do.

Strangely enough, the movie "The Wrestler" was pretty realistic with the locker room scenes and the in ring work. That's typically how you talk through a match.

Guess it was an "assumption" but I bet I'm right.

Oh, and BTW...a bunch of toothless hilljacks driving around for 500 miles (NASCAR) while holding their bladders from peeing themselves does NOT constitute a "sport." Git-R-Dun !!!

Good example can be found here during this match which a few people might remember. Andre tells Hogan how the match will end. It's been admitted by Hogan and McMahon that even they didn't know about the slam and outcome until this moment in the match.

More assumptions on your part.....

As I said earlier, too often in debates such as this one folks try to change the definition to suit their opinion, which is why it is senseless to debate it....

You're wrong so you try to resort to false slams to make a joke or a point, of which you have failed in both.

Not at all. There is nothing "athletic" about sitting in a car and driving around in circles for 500 miles. If that's the case, I could find the spot that Chevy Chase drove around in circles at during the movie "European Vacation" and be an "athlete."

Firmly believe that golf, bowling and NASCAR are "activities" but not "sports" and their participants are no more "athletes" than a pro wrestler.

Like you said, there are two sides to this view and the NASCAR fans are so militant in their beliefs that it's "athletic" and a "sport" that it's comical.

Nothing funnier than a diehard NASCAR fan..

I think of golf & NASCAR as sports...
I guess it depends on what you are used to thinking about those sports (or activities if you will), But I don't think you have to be terrific "athletes to excel at them.

Big slobs like John Daly, Tim Herron and Craig Stadler have been successful at golf, and guys in their 40s routinely win at NASCAR, I believe. If NASCAR success depended largely on "athletic ability", then it would be a younger man's game.

Golf is more of a younger man's game than it used to be, but still a guy who's in his late 40s can win a PGA Tour event, or threaten at a major.

Well thanks for being the be all, end all of the discussion and clearing that all up for us

Being a NASCAR driver, or any race car driver for that matter, takes a physical skill. It is a different skill set than a traditional "ball sport" such as football.baseball.or basketball but is still a physical skill set. The same can be said for golf. I like how people minimize what race drivers do, but at the same time they couldnt do it. If it is so easy dont you think everybody would want to do it and make the millions that the top drivers make? Why do the very best make so much money if it doesnt take skill to be the best?

Reference was made in another post about the spot that Chevy Chase drove around for 500 miles, as to simplify it. Yeah anybody can drive around in a circle for 500 miles. Just about anyone could throw a football, it is a matter of how well you can throw that football that detemines if you are going to be playing that sport. The very best at throwing that football will most likely be playing in the NFL, the not as good at a lower level, going down levels to not playing at all. How is that any different than NASCAR? Or any type of racing?
