Seriously, she insists, a card would be fine.

*L* ... I once made the mistake of actually believing my wife when she said "we shouldn't buy anything for our anniversary". Once.

If you were one of these rookies, what would you do and why?
In all honesty, to me it would be a no-brainer, I'd go without questioning it. Being a young man trying to be a professional athelete, I would go just to see whta it was like to be looked at like a pro. Sounds a little selfish, but I've coached young kids on the football field and it is very satisfying watching them learn, plus it made me feel good that they looked up to me. Maybe that second part sounds wrong, but that's the truth.

If you were providing advice to one of the rookies, what would you advise them to do and why?
I would tell them to enjoy the experience, because it might be something they never get to do again. I would tell them that this is the kind of thing that pros do, and tell them how much the kids appreciate it. The kids would be looking at them as pro football players, the very thing they are trying to become.
And yes, I would tell them it would make them look good with the coaches, but I would also tell them that it probably won't make a difference as far as making the team.
I wasn't trying to make you look bad with the , I just find it rediculous that people actually believe that going on this trip would have anything to do with making the team. If you need them to boost your ego, I feel sorry for you, because that was not my intention.

As many others have said, what does this have to do with our success as a football team?
Maybe Mangini is a total jerk. Maybe he told all the rookies "I'm going to tell everyone this is voluntary, but if you don't come, I'm going to cut you and make sure no one ever picks you up." But you know what? If the guy gets us to the playoffs and the Super Bowl, I sure as hell am not going to care what kind of guy he is.
I don't want coaches for the sake of "he's a nice guy." We got that with RAC. I don't want players who are "good guys." Yeah, I don't want criminals and thugs, but if the guy is an egomaniac or a primadonna, but he shows up and plays his heart out on Sunday, that's what matters to me.
When it comes down to it, I want Ws. I don't care what Mangini did this weekend. I really don't. Could he have gone about it better? Yeah, maybe. But, in the end, why do people care so much?

After reading that Mangini to a plane.
I am firmly in the 'you need to walk in the shoes of the other guy"
He should have road the bus.
Charity events are normally one day and done, turning in to a weekender in just inappropriate.
Welcome back, Joe, we missed you!

It does bother me a little, to be honest... Mangini not taking the bus.
I'll try to give him the benefit of the doubt... maybe he had something important he needed to tend to on Friday and couldn't take the bus.

Cause you've got two groups on polar opposites here ..
Group 1 consists of the folks that believe Jeannie can do no right .. and of course there all over for him for FORCING his rookies to work at his charity and take a 20 hour bus ride ..
they tottally ingore he fact its a GREAT CHARITY and a GOOD CAUSE ..
Group 2 consists of the group that believe Jeannie can do no wrong .. and they just tottally ignore the fact that it was WAY OUT LINE for jeannie to ask his rooks to do this .. no matter how good his intentions were .... IT JUST LOOKS BAD and is in BAD TASTE ..
no matter how good his intentions were or how much he stressed to the rooks they had a choice .. IT PUT THEM IN A POSITION THEY SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN PUT IN ..
thats why folks care ..

Load the boys on the bus for a 10hr.ride,bid them farewell with "maybe I'll catch a ride home with you cats" then take a nap before your plane leaves. Nothing at all wrong with that behavior.
Devils advocacy says the head coach is more important than those players, and that Devil would be right.
I mean, it's not like he has anything else to do. He's just the head coach of the team. Maybe Lerner should ride on the same plane as the players.
I don't have a problem with the head coach taking an easier route than the players IF he had something better to do, which he most likely did.
The rookies have to learn playbooks. Mangini has much more to do than that.
Now having said that, Mangini is an ass. On a team of mostly black players, his choice in music to be blaring is stOOpid. Might as well play some Waylon Jennings and Mel Tellis while he's at it. That'll REALLY help him connect with his players
This is Mangin........er........Bill Belichek at his best. He's either going to win and it'll all be ok, or he's going to lose and be a humongous failure. I like that he's playing hardball because unlike that dolt Crennel, the players need to KNOW who's calling the shots. However, based on his reputation, you can bet I'd never invite Mangini over to dinner.
But if I did, I'd play some Tool and see how he likes it

The agents would be holding the team hostage from calling Goodell and the newspapers if that was said. Mangini seems like hes being careful about not messing up and playing by the rules in front of the media and general public. Maybe thats why he dont want the media around. You cant mess up if the media dont know everything. He better not break the rules after ratting out his old boss.
But your right. Mangini dont have to be my favorite person as long as the Browns are improving and winning. I already didnt understand as to why he would waist the time and resources to cover up the Browns mural at the stadium being one of the first things he did as the Browns head coach. And now hes expecting rookies, in their early 20s and should have the energy, to attend a football camp for young men in his hometown. Keeping them out of trouble and keeping an eye on his new recruits. The worse thing he did was not ride on the bus with them and rode the plane. Mangini probabley would have had to pay for the tickets since it isnt a team event. He would have been leading by example if he did ride the bus. I dont have to work for they guy so I dont care what hes making these young well paid players do. I really dont care about the agents. He cant be that bad if so many of his ex-players came to play for him. I also didnt read a bad thing about him from his ex-players after he got fired. Most of the negativity is coming from local writers that feel they are being left out in the cold from insider information and former staff members. Nothing from the players. Put up the Ws, consistancy, improvement, and a quality product and you wont here it from this fan. I for one would love to be in my young 20s and taking a free cross country bus ride to a place I have never visited. To teach kids a few tips in football and from what I have learned over the years would make the trip that much more fun.
I wish I had an agent in high school, because then I could have had him call the local Tribune and tell then how "we dont like the coach calling my house at 9 o'clock in the summer to make sure Im home resting for practice tomarrow and not running around with my friends chasing tail".

And if you read some of the reports, he's playing music that was written before or during the time when many of these players were born.
I'm sure Braylon Edwards was elated to hear Bon Jovi, Queen, and Journey

... are mutually exclusive and have nothing to do with the each other. Not sure if you feel that way or not ... can't tell from your post.
The only issue is did Mangini have an ulterior motive or did he make the players feel like he possibly had an ulterior motive? That's the issue. That's the division. Not whether or not you like Mangini. There are some that feel there wasn't any ulterior motive at all and these guys could say "I'm not going" and not think twice ... then there is the other camp that thinks at the very minimum there was doubt in the players' minds about what their options were.
Perception is reality. IMO, none of these rookies would have felt 100% comfortable saying no.
LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

While it seems the guy is kind of a jerk, I'm sure that many of us will agree that THAT DOESN'T MATTER when it comes to football. What matters is that he gets us Ws.
I mean, people wonder why we continually struggle, and I think a part of it is that nobody (fans, media, etc.) is ever happy with what a coach is doing. I mean, as soon as we hired the guy, there were people ranting and raving about what a horrible choice it was, and this was before he even had a chance to run a draft, let alone coach a game.
Now, the first time we lose a game this year, people will be calling for Mangini's head.
I'm not saying we have to be "kool-aid" drinkers, but we shouldn't be as pessimistic as many of the "realists" on here. Their reality is essentially the complete extreme bad happening. "I'm just telling it like it is, the Browns will never win another game and the city will be hit by an asteroid. That's just telling it like it is."
No, you want it like it is? We haven't played a single down this season of real football. We haven't put on pads, we haven't played a preseason game, we haven't even signed a damn rookie yet! Hence, there is no way to judge how Mangini is as a coach of the BROWNS.
People mock "the best fans in football" when they have their orange colored glasses on. Well, I mock "the best fans in football" when they have their "we're the worst team in the history of the universe" glasses on.
I just get so damn tired of people finding something to complain about and then just bashing it and bashing it and bashing it. The Browns aren't perfect, and there are things Mangini is doing that I wouldn't do, but right now, I'm not going to pass judgment for the very basic reason that I don't have enough evidence to do so.
Oh, and Toad, about the music, I want to say I read somewhere that cone of the criteria for the music is to be clean, and, well, frankly, that eliminates a lot of rap stuff (although I tread on thin ice calling that "music" ). And, the point of the music is just to be loud, IIRC.

Preachit, Rev. Toad!
Maybe a little "Olde Scoole" is just what this team needs. Lord knows the other approaches seem to have brought less-than-stellar results...
I'm all for seeing this team run by a Paul Brown/Lombardi/Parcells- type coach. They all seem to have at least one thing in common, besides a no-nonsense approach to their jobs- championships in their bios.
A nice SB run, and who among us would be complaining? Not the fans, these rookies... or the feckless media, for that matter.
wadded BVD's anyone?

How is this old school?? .... asking them to do this was JUST WRONG!!! .. Old School is making joe run a lap for a mental mistake (physical mistakes are gonna happen and shouldn't be punished unless its an extreme case .. but mental mistakes .. UNACCEPTABLE .. ) .. Old School is holding people accountable .. and I believe that jeannie is going to do that.. Old School is getting them up at 6:00 AM and having them run wind sprints up a hill for an hour .. Having them go on a 20 hour bus ride and work at your charity is NOT EVEN REMOTELY CLOSE TO OLD SCHOOL ... hell have them go dig ditch and then have them re-fill it with the same dirt .. thats way ore old school than what jeannie did .. it is NOT OLD SCHOOL .. I like EVERYTHING that jeannie/Coke have done so far .... EVERYTHING .. they drafted QUALITY KIDS .. no QUESTIONABLE CHARACTERS .. NONE .. everything I have heard about everyone of these kids is that there HARD WORKING GOOD CITIZENS ..... I have not have the time to follow the college game over the last 3 or 4 years .. so how good they are .. I can't really say ... but there FOOTBALL GUYS . and that is HUGE in my book .. at practice hes organized and holds people accountable .. i LOVE that .. so far everything I have seen has the arrows pointing up (and its still WAY TO EARLY to know much .. but we only only gauge what we've seen so far .. ) .. and I like jeannie .. BUT PUTTING THOSE KIDS IN THAT POSITION WAS JUST WRONG .. it was great that it was for CHARITY .. OUTSTANDING .. but asking guys that u controol there futures to help with YOUR CHARITY .... NAHH .. that is NOT OLD SCHOOL AND IT IS WRONG!!! .. I could really care less .. this will not really enter into my eval of jeannie one iota .. I don't think this makes him a bad guy .. to me all it means is that his heart was in the right place but he made an judgement in error by putting the rooks in a bad spot .. it means NO MORE .. NO LESS .. but watching people stick up for this makes me just scratch my head and wonder if this guy could ever do anything wrong .. same on the other side ... my sole defense for him would be that he did not have them at his house washing and waxing and cleaning up the inside of his car while the rest of the rooks were mowing the lawn, weeding and trimming the hedges ..

It's not wrong and it's very old school.
It's just old school employment, not old school football. Let us not forget these folks are employed.
How long has your place of employment been donating to the United Way or other charity organization, how long has your place of employment been donating their services to a charity organization? How many places of employment want 100% participation and prop up those that give of their money or their time by producing lists of these "giving" employees? How many of you don't want to be on that list?
It's been going on for as long as I've been employed and I think over 30 years qualifies as "old school".

EM's task here isn't just to teach plays, or have these guys in shape. His job is to make this a great football team and IMO you rarely achieve that without great players.
Not just great athletes - great level headed, well rounded players. These are kids suddenly thrust into "pro-athlete -ville" and all the dangers and distractions that go with it.
Look at all the talent that's been lost in the NFL due to those dangers.
PacMan Vick Matt Jones are just the start of a list that could have hundreds of names on it if we tried.
These kids need direction -and some very simply- need to be taught how to be good people -because they may never have been taught so before.
If you watched the Cavs games you probably saw the commercial with the Dad busting his son's chops about building a brick wall right. Demanding that he tear it down and start over.
The commercial ends with the kid grown up explaining that he realized it wasn't the brick wall being built but his own character.
EM force feeding these guys a little bit of "humble-pie" and asking them to GIVE instead of take is the very pinnacle of coaching.
Great teams are made of great players. Great players can't be built without being "great people" first.

Eric had reservations about doing it at first and then people told him they thought it would be a good opportunity for them to be exposed to this type of event, and having the chance to work with the kids.
Definitley an error in judgement on Mangini's part, IMO. However, it probably doesn't warrant all the vitriole being spewed over the incident. I get the impression that Mangini is a fairly straight-shooter with his players and I honestly believe he meant it when he said the trip was strictly voluntary.
However, his hesitancy to offer the opportunity in the first place SHOULD have been his guide on this one. That tells me he at least had an inkling about the akward position this would put his rookies in. He should have gone with gut on that call!

*L* ... thanks for making my point .... Psst .. there not employed as far as I know ... the drafted rookies I know are not employed .. I do not believe that the UDA's are employed yet either ... I believe there compensation does not start until TC opens up .. I believe all they get for the OTA's and team activity stuff is expenses paid .. but i am not 100% sure on the UDFA's .. and dude .. theres a huge difference between donating MONEY and TIME .. whens the last time u donated anytime to a charity .. and dude ... if this is so cool .. WHERE WERE THE VETS??? .. just sayin .. anyhow ..... thanks again for making my point .. U did it wonderfully ..

I've been giving this some thought the last couple days, and I'm not as supportive of this as I was.
I don't think it's a huge deal, but it might have been poor judgement to ask the rooks to do this, which may have put them in an uncomfortable position.

I have no problem with volunteer work...if it's voluntary. For most rookies, I don't think this is the case.
Right now, Mangini is in a position of power over these rookies. He does not solely control their destiny, but his decisions will play a large part in the length and path of their careers. For most rookies (with first day picks as the notable exception), the coach has greater power and leverage in their professional relationship. These rookies who give their consent to take part in this volunteer program might be giving "exploited" consent. Whether it's truly voluntary or not, they are put in a position where they feel that NO is not an acceptable answer because of the difference in power between them and their coach.
I'm going to draw a parallel to this situation. Suppose I am a particularly tough teacher at a college, and I'm teaching a class that is required for most of my students to graduate. I ask a student if they would like to rake leaves for my 80 year old neighbor. I tell them that their participation is voluntary. Now, are they REALLY in a position to give their consent? If they volunteer, is it because they really want to help, or is it because I hold most of the chips in our relationship and they don't want to tick me off? If I put my students in this situation, I have exploited the extra leverage and power that I have in the teacher/student relationship. In my opinion, this is akin (but not exactly the same) to what Mangini is doing right now. Sure, raking leaves for that old lady was nice, and it probably won't hurt the students, but that doesn't hide the fact that I used my position of power to coerce someone into doing something they probably didn't want to do.
Most of you say this volunteer program is not a big deal. I'm sure most of you would be unhappy, however, if your boss "volunteered" 3 days of your time off from work. I'd probably be reading post after post about it in the Tailgate Lot.
On an somewhat unrelated not, Mangini is in CLEVELAND. I haven't lived in Cleveland for a few years, but as far as I can rememember, their are still disadvantaged youths in Cleveland. Why not help them out instead of helping out the kids that live 10 hours away?
Much respect to ya, even if you wish me the opposite...

Amen Tulsa... we had a girl at our office sign up for a Habitat for Humanity gig... I overheard a couple other guys in the kitchen.. one guy said, "Are you going?" the other guy said, "I don't know, is John signed up to go?" John is the VP... if John was going, he was going.. it was that simple.
I do get a kick out the "They get to play in the NFL, they should stop whining about this stuff" attitude though... I could see if somebody made $70K a year and their boss asked them do something like this... they would complain and the unemployed folks could say "At least you have a job, you should stop whining."

in what U overheard .. if John the VP asked for volunteers .. then you'd have at least a bit of a correlation to what Jeannie did .. but seeing as how John the VP ASKED NO ONE .. wheres even the small part of the correlation?? ..
and ... the folks in yours and Tulsa's example ALL READY WORK THERE .. these guys other than Mack/Robo/Mass and Venuike (who are pretty much assured jobs .. ) .. there in the INTERVIEW PROCCESS .. that changes the entire scenario ...
I do not see the correlation at all .. well other than it involves charity

I agree.
When a coach starts asking rookies to do something, there is a very fine line between asking and implying they probably should.
All attended if I am not mistaken.
My wife and I have entertained more than a few times over the years to groups of 20-30-40 people, and rarely has everybody sent a R.S.V.P , and all of those people are friends.
I find it hard to believe at least a few of these guy felt like it would be a career limiting move if they declined.
That said, I don't think it that big a deal, but I hope he reconsiders the invites to guys not under contract at the least, and move the camp to the Cleveland area ....I can't imagine Carmine, or whatever his name was, caring all that much who's kids his foundation helps.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn. GM Strong

The coloration is Mangini is company in this scenario. Mangini and the company asked for volunteers. Companies aren't going to force you to participate but like any good company, Mangini desires to see 100% participation. Giving back to the community is a time honored tradition in corporate America.
And yes to answer your question I have given both my time and money in support of our community for under privileged children's homes.
Even if all the rooks receive is room and board, that is still considered compensation. If they aren't officially employed, they are attempting to gain employment and the scenario holds true. If their spot isn't secure on the team and I wanted to make the team, or at the very least increase my chances, there is no way I wouldn't be involved in the companies charity work.
Not to mention, helping children is just the decent thing to do regardless of their proximity.

I can't believe there is 3 pages on this...
They were requested to attend an optional camp for charity. They are fighting for a job...intended to be "required" or not, you get on the bus.

Ive talked to someone from Connitcut that went to the camp. He got to talk to the players. The players were not in a bad mood and said it was blown out of proportion. It was mainly coming from the agents. So if that is the case, why do we care and feel the need to argue what an agent thinks. It wasnt the end of the world for the players.

j/c Chain of command. Mangini is the boss. You better go to these "voluntarily" events if you are a rook.
My boss eats his lunch whenever he wants, and leaves early if he wants. I eat my lunch between 12:00 and 12:30. And I clock out at 4:30. Do I go to my boss and bitch that he gets to do what he wants while I can't? Hell no, I know my place. If I put the work in and get myself up to my bosses' level, maybe I can do what I want also.
I'm sick of crybaby spoiled athletes and (most) younger peoples attitudes. I'm only 35 but people nowadays expect everything handed to them and cry if it is not.
Suck it up boys, get your arse on that bus, make a good impression and collect your millions if you can do your job on the field.
How in the world can you fix something... If you don't know how it's supposed to work?

One thing nobody really brought up.....that I can tell anyway....is imagine the chance to talk football with the Head Coach for 10 hours. Or even 10 minutes. I doubt rookies get much of a chance to talk to the HC until the turk comes calling. A smart rookie would go to this camp, annd try to get a chance to talk football with Mangini for whatever time they can get on that ride back to Ohio. (Mangini DID ride back right?)

I've been struggling to explain exactly how i feel about all this, but this post sums it up nicely.
voluntary.. ya right.

Just further proof of how the media despises Mangini.
"In the same week Mangini told Josh Cribbs the team would move on without him if he kept pressing for a new contract, which first-year player wanted to stand up and say, "Hartford on a bus? No can do."
I fail to see any remote connection of a Coach telling a player to stop being a cancer by pressing for a new contract - to kids saying no to a volunteer Charity action. Totally rediculous reasoning by the media.
As for the bus ride... Mangini flew to Hartford for the camp while the rookies rode the bus. He planned on joining them for the bus ride home, though, which one can only imagine lifted their spirits.
Free transportation!
With a chaperone!
Shows you their bias - couldn't have portrayed a more biased piece, thanks.
1. Mangini has family in CT - so he took the plane ride he was going to take to visit home anyway.
2. He has planned on taking the bus ride home...so the only reason posters like yourself responded with HE'S FLYING was to those who stated that its a positive to take a 10 hour trip with the HC and pick his brain and maybe bond with him...its happening.
3. The sick bias towards Manigini in a negative way is so apparent when here Shaw actually makes a case where Mangini is damned for taking the bus ride back...damned if he does, damned if he don't. As Shaw states OH Great now they no only have to take the trip but do so with a "CHAPERONE" and even turn that negative.
This poster and many on this board have come to realize that the media totally dislikes Mangini....he made them work for their columns as he put this new regime together and didn't waste meaningful time Kumbaya-ing with the media!

Do you really think the media hates Mangini simply because he doesn't give out a lot of info, or that he stopped the leaks? That seems so petty to me. But, I wouldn't put it past them.
I have no problem with articles being critical of a guy. But it just seems that the Cleveland media is making many mountains out of very few molehills.
I just hope that if they treat him like crap now, they do it if we start winning. Otherwise, we can start going on their blogs when they're praising Mangini for this that and the other thing and saying "but wait, didn't you essentially say that he was the devil incarnate?"
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism
