Post-scrimmage quotes from Cleveland Browns coach Eric Mangini

(Opening statement)- "How's everybody doing? We had a really productive day. I enjoyed the fact that we got the weather that we got. We really haven't gotten much heat throughout camp but at any point, that could change. It was a good reminder to us how important it is, we're always emphasizing hydrating, but a day like today really reinforces that. We'll get those weather shifts in the different places that we play throughout the preseason. It was fun to have the fans that we had there and be able to visit with them a little bit after the game, the whole team be able to visit with them, and spend some time with them and thank them for coming out to this early event.

"I liked the amount of situations that we got. As I said before the game, you don 't know what's going to come up, but there's going to be a bunch of them. Some we've practice, some we haven't, and how we respond to them is ultimately going to affect how the game goes. We saw that throughout the course of this game, the shifts between momentum, being up, being tied, Brown taking a lead, White having a chance there at the end, the missed field goal, all those different things that go into any weeks' game. There is a lot to coach off of, a lot to teach off of and a really good start for us here, leading into next week."

(On what the first play says about Brady Quinn)- "You always like to start the game that way, if you're the team on the good side of that pass. I was over on Brown sideline during that play and that was an example of where you have to stay high on the receiver to cover. I think there might have been a little bit of a stutter, from the receiver, to freeze the defensive back, and Brady cut it loose. I thought it was an excellent way to kick it off. It was a really good example of how quickly one team can get momentum in a game."

(On the quarterback play)- "I thought both guys had their moments on the plus side and on the side that we need to continue to work on. I'm not used to seeing D.A. (Derek Anderson) as a scrambler there, that scramble there into the end zone on that third down play. I'm sure he'd want that interception back that he had. I think it was in the first quarter. Brady's interception there, to set up points, for Brown, ended up being the game- winning field goal there. Both those plays, they'd like to have back. They moved the team different times, with different levels of effectiveness. I'll be able to get a better gauge as we watch the tape. I thought Ratty (Brett Ratliff) did a nice job in his opportunities, hitting (David) Patten for those two deep balls. There were some good things."

(On Josh Cribbs' development as a wide receiver)- "He's made progress each week. I like the way that he can get open. He's a strong player, so at the break point he's able to gain some separation. He just needs to continue to refine the routes, continue to see the covers unfold. As he starts to build in his routes, know what the exact adjustment is. Those are feel things, those are experience things and we give him a lot of reps during camp. He got a lot of reps here today, and he'll continue to get a lot of reps. If he works the way he has, he should make strides."

(On the run blocking)- "It' s tough in a game like this, where there isn't tackling, to run the ball effectively. Both offensive coordinators, I think, went to where they can get the more yards, although Noah (Herron) split that one against blitz coverage. Most of the time, when you do these types of scrimmages, it ends up being more of a pass overall game then a run overall game."

(On if Rob Ryan focused on trying to take Braylon Edwards out of the offense)- "We're going to get some approach, there's going to be some philosophical approach as to how to beat us. The important thing is the players that do have singled up coverage, those are opportunities, those are windows to get more passes and to win against man-to-man coverage or single coverage. We'll be able to do some things with him to move him around, where you can't always count on him to be in the same place, to free up some things. Every week, it's going to be some type of adjustment that we're going to have. Some of it we'll be ready for. Some of it will be game plan specific that we go over on the sideline, talk about and then have to react to it."

(On what he said to Derek Anderson after his penalty)- "It's important that you focus on the task at hand. The officials are going to be officiating the game and they're not going to change their minds based on any amount of lobbying, any amount of discussion. It doesn't happen. It's not a debate. Their rule is final. We were just talking about the importance of focusing on what you have to do in that play, don't worry about the officials. That's something I'll talk to the whole team about. Those guys are doing the best job they can. We're going to like the calls sometimes. We're not going to like them sometimes. Whatever it is, it doesn't matter. It is what it is. We have to move forward. Don't waste anytime debating."

(On Coye Francies' growth)- " He got a little bit of a later start, starting camp on PUP like he did. There are some good things that he did here today. He is an aggressive player and sometimes too aggressive. One of the things that he and I have talked about, is the importance of covering with your feet, with understanding the illegal contact rule in the NFL and where you can jam, where you can't jam. That's a little bit of a transition for college corners and you get that feel. It's not just understanding the rule, it's getting a feel in press man coverage, of when you have to lay off with the hands and when you can keep going."

(On Mohamed Massaquoi)- "I'm not sure how many catches he had. He had an amazing catch a couple days ago in the red zone, a one-handed 'Jordan' grab. He's got really good ability. He's a young guy. I'm sure both those guys appreciate being in the stadium, being in the locker room, going through this experience, looking around. Now, the first time they come in here, hopefully some of those nerves, butterflies, uncertainty, all the things that go along with playing in a new place, maybe we've taken a little bit of that away, because they have experience to some degree. "

(On D'Qwell Jackson)- "He got D.A. (Derek Anderson) on the same type of ball in OTAs. I don't know if he's got that pattern down or what he saw. It looked like a repeat of a play that we had in the spring. He's got great instincts. He has a great feel for where the ball goes. He works at understanding the blocking schemes, understanding what the offense is trying to get done. As he grows in that area, combined with natural instincts, I think he'll keep doing a great job both in the run and passing game."

(On how D'Qwell Jackson sees the game)- "I really like his work ethic. I like his approach. He is very serious. This is all business, all the time for him and that's what you want. That's what you want from all your players. He still is a young player, so that realization hits different guys at different times and he's got it."

(On if Fred Weary was signed because of Red Hadnot's injury)- "It was to add some depth to the offensive line. That was the main thing that we were looking to do. We worked him out and liked the workout. He kind of got thrown in the fire, because we signed him later yesterday. We shoved him in a meeting room, and then joined the white team and away he went. He's got experience to draw on. George (Warhop) will have to spend extra time with him. He went from not playing, to in a scrimmage. I didn't notice him, so he did a good job."

(On Lance Leggett)- "Lance lived in the meeting rooms when we first got here. He was up every day. He wanted the information. He wanted the playbook. He wanted all those things and he worked at it. It's good to see all that hard work translate into being able to make some plays. He's got good vertical speed. There are some things that he needs to improve on, in terms of route running and getting off the press, and things like that, that we've been focusing on with all our receivers. He responds to it. He's very coachable."

(On Alex Mack's performance)- "That's a tough day, when you draw Shaun (Rogers), it exposes you . I like the fact that we had limited pre-snap penalties. That was something that I was looking for, because that's tied into focus and discipline. I thought there was only one false start and one encroachment. I'm not looking for one false start and one encroachment game, I like zero and zero, but typically, this time of year, in an environment like this, you have a few more, so I was pleased with that. Alex had a lot of responsibility today. He had to make calls, had to make adjustments, had to run the no huddle. He's not going to run any laps today. He's got to be in great shape from all the extra work he does."

(On Derek Anderson playing with the first team)- "I'll look at it this week and decide a little bit later in the week."

(On Syndric Steptoe's agent's allegations regarding his injury)- "I didn't talk to Syndric Steptoe's agent. I don't know what he said. I know that the practice that we had planned is exactly the practice that we executed yesterday. Seventy-nine other guys were able to practice effectively. Really, the play that he was injured on, laying out for the ball, I don't think it had anything to do with the elements."

(On how Steptoe got hurt)- "He really laid out for the ball. It was a great effort play. He just wasn't able to bring the ball in. It was in typical Syndric style. He always gives that type of effort. He was trying to go up and get the ball."

Post-scrimmage transcript: Brady Quinn
by Staff reports
Sunday August 09, 2009, 9:08 PM

Post-scrimmage quotes from Cleveland Browns quarterback Brady Quinn

(On the day overall) - "It was good. I think a lot of the scenarios we've been practicing kind of got played out in that game. We got a lot of guys in for some different reps and different scenarios and we learned a lot. We definitely did some good things out there."

(On the touchdown throw on the first play of the first drive) - "Lance (Leggett) is an extremely fast guy and we wanted to try and get some play action, to pull the safeties and see if he could get behind the coverage and he did. He made a great play, ran a great route, and the offensive line did a great job of holding up."

(On Derek Anderson saying he was giving the defense hand signals during the scrimmage) - "He would say that (jokingly)."

(On if this was a nice dress rehearsal for next week) - "I think the coaching staff did a great job of preparing us for game-type scenarios , whether it's at our facility or here at the stadium today. As you can see, everything is very game-like or as close as possible as you can make it."

(On his mechanics for a deep throw) - "I still have some more in the tank. When a guy beats him [defensive back] and gets behind them [defense], you don't want to overthrow him. You do want to give him a chance, so you don't want to under throw him. You are just trying to put it as much on point as you can."

(On how Josh Cribbs fits in offensively) - "Josh is an unbelievable athlete. You want to get the ball in his hands, because when you do, he breaks tackles and makes things happen. Today, unfortunately, it wasn't a tackle type of scrimmage, so some of the skills like breaking tackles and making people miss really didn't come into effect, but he did a great job for us today."

(On if Cribbs is better as a receiver this year than in previous years) - "Without a doubt, he is definitely someone who is capable of playing wide receiver as well as special teams. He probably doesn't give himself enough credit for what he is able to do out there as a wide receiver."

(On his overall play today) - "It's tough to tell right now, we lost the scrimmage, so I'm kind of upset about that. We'll probably go back and watch the film later today and come back and make some corrections tomorrow."

(On how his first week of training camp has gone) - "I think it went well. It went kind of how camp goes. You have your good days, your bad, and probably the biggest thing with that is fighting through that adversity and fatigue, soreness and responding the next day. I think that was one of the key things for me, was mentally not allowing myself to get down if I had a bad day or wasn't doing the mental things that I need to out there on the field."

(On if he will get more reps with the first team) - "I hope so, but again, I'm going to play with whoever is out there with me. I think that's how I went into this situation. We have a lot of guys, who are talented and who are able to make plays, and are excited about trying to get into the game. That is more or less my attitude going into today."

(On if this setting gives him more of an idea of how he is playing) - "I don't really know, that's an interesting question. The preseason is nothing like the regular season so it's really hard to gauge your progress and how things are going until you get in a regular season game and that type of scenario. The speeds are so different and there are guys who you are playing with or against who might not be there in the regular season."

(On if he has been throwing deep more to get reps or to shed the image that he can 't go deep) - "You are the guys who have been saying that. I've never shied away from throwing a deep ball. I just try to be smart with the football. I take what the defense gives me and I'm not going to force a throw. Today, we had a guy who got open down field and that's the type of offense I like to run. I like to have ball control, control the clock, manage the game, and make plays when they are there, but not force things. We are trying to play smart football and that's the kind of football I like to play."

Post-scrimmage transcript: Derek Anderson
by Staff reports
Sunday August 09, 2009, 9:06 PM

Post-scrimmage quotes from Cleveland Browns quarterback Derek Anderson

(On how he feels the scrimmage went)- "It was alright. I made a bad decision down in the red zone. They were having some troubles with their headsets, again. I thought I knew the call, but it wasn't the right call, so we had some confusion there. We didn't panic. It was about winning this scrimmage. Compared to this, when we had the scrimmage yesterday, we were down, we came back and didn't panic. I thought guys played well. It was hot as heck out there. We have to get better though. It wasn't as good as we've been practicing, obviously, with the tempo, and catching and throwing. We're getting better and I like the things that we're doing."

(On if it was strange to switch off at quarterback with Brett Ratliff)- "It's a little bit different. Ratty's my boy. I love him. He threw us a touchdown to get us back in it. We had the one offense going versus the one defense and those guys are good. Big Baby (Shaun Rogers) is a beast and he's been giving those guys trouble all camp. I like the things that we're doing defensively, too. That's how you win championships, with defenses, and our defense is good. "

(On how he thinks his week of practice went)- "I thought I had a great week. I grasped some things, getting guys in the right situations, commanding the offense. Overall, I think the week has been good. Camp has been pretty good for me."

(On how much he enjoys running the huddle)- "I love it. I talked to Dabs (Brian Daboll) about that. I feel like I can just go at my pace, so I can get into a little bit of a rhythm. You miss a throw or something and you try to get going. I like to get into a rhythm early and if I do, some pretty good things happen."

(On if they had a problem with the helmet communication)- "Yes, we had a problem with that last year. They'll get it fixed. The whole first three drives it was in and out. I just started calling my own plays."

(On if he feels more comfortable in the offense now than in minicamp)- "Yes, I'm trying to understand what they're getting us to do. I've been throwing the ball really well and I'm happy with that. When you're throwing it well and your reads are good, good things happen."

(On what caused him to receive a penalty)- "He said I threw it at him. I was just sacked. I just kind of tossed him the ball. Whatever, just next play, not a big deal. He said it hit him. I was like, 'You have to be kidding.' I was like, 'Being on the 10-yard line wasn't bad enough."

(On if his touchdown run would have counted in a real game)- "Of course. The first guy wouldn't have gotten me. I might have got hit."

(On if he will throw a lot of short and medium ranged balls this season )- "For our side, I would say because we gashed them down the field. They weren't going to let Braylon (Edwards) get lose. They rolled to him. They put the safety over top of him. They game planned it. From the situation yesterday, they game planned it and did some different things to make us throw the ball underneath. Obviously, if we were in a real game, we would run the ball effectively and it would be a lot easier for us. We were forced to throw a little bit more. I don't even care. We won and I'm happy about it."

(On if he thinks it means anything that he was with the first team offense)- "I don't know. I've been playing well. I've had a good first couple weeks of camp. I'm just going to continue to do the same things I've been doing."

(On if there were any wagers on the scrimmage)- "There was a lot riding, but I can't tell you what it was."

(On D'Qwell Jackson intercepting his pass)- "I saw him running to it. I should have moved him to the left a little bit and I probably would have had it. Obviously, I ran the wrong play than what he called. I'm glad it's a scrimmage and not versus [a real opponent]."

(On Mohamed Massaqoui)- "He's been playing well. Today we had a mix-up on the goal line going in, getting the fade. Whatever, we had to change our signals because Brady (Quinn) told them all the hand signals, so we got mixed up on that. It was a scrimmage. I thought for the situation, we did all right."

(On the helmet communication system not working)- "It was mine and Ratty's (Brett Ratliff) was working, and mine wasn't. I was like, 'Come on guys, we went through this the last two years.'"

(On if it was good to practice with the defense taking away Braylon Edwards since he will be a focal point for opponents)- "Like I said, we would run the ball the way that they were playing it. If they were taking a guy out of the box, putting him over the top of Braylon and giving us a chance to run the ball. In this thing, when they're tagging off with one hand, you can't tell how far a guy 's going to get. It's not really indicative of the way that we actually have been playing, but it's a good start."

BS. You just wanted a better vantage point of the blonde.

You know...she may have been a butterface for all I know because she was wearing those big sunglasses that women wear these days. But I'll describe it for you...

Browns haltertop as seen in the current 2 for 1 deal at the team shop site. Grey booty shorts. Had some curves to her as well but wasn't large by any means. Had her hair up in a ponytail as well, about 5'5".

Post-scrimmage transcript: Shaun Rogers
by Staff reports
Sunday August 09, 2009, 9:03 PM

Post-scrimmage quotes from Browns defensive lineman Shaun Rogers

(On how the scrimmage went today)- "It was alright. It is always good to be at work in the heat with your pads on. It's probably one of the hottest days we've had during camp. It was good to be in the game situation, with that type of temperature and atmosphere."

(On what Derek Anderson said after he got sacked)- "Derek was already sacked. He was trying to get it to be an incomplete, but that was null and void."

(On his sack dance)- "You've seen it before. Don't act like it's new."

(On how camp is going)- "It's swell. It's my second year in this type of system. I am still learning and getting acclimated to the new regime. It's just been fine."

(On if he gave Alex Mack everything he had)- "I didn't give him everything, but I gave him enough so I could get some work in. I've still got to do my job. I am still being evaluated and graded every day. I still have to perform to a certain level, expectation."

(On the scrimmage being like a game)- "Again more so for the heat and situational. Every day is a good day that you are out there. You always could be far worse, you could be on the sideline with an injury or you could just not have a job at all right now. It was a good feeling to be out there. I was glad to see a lot of fans out there coming to support us. I just look forward to the stadium being packed when it counts."

(On if the defense will attack more this year)- "I can't call it so far. Rob Ryan has a lot of history in this league of good defenses. I am just looking forward to performing in the defense. Whatever he calls I am going to run to the best of my ability. Hopefully, it has much more of an impact."

(On if there are any changes to his technique)- "No, the 3-4 is always going to be a 3-4. If anything, maybe there are a few hiccups here, but mostly on the second level with the linebackers, safeties and corners. The technique is still the same."

(On the defensive line rotation)- " We played a lot of plays last year. When you give people opportunities, mistakes will be made. Hopefully, we don't play as much and hopefully, we cut back our mistakes. Which in turn would decrease some of the numbers all around and have a productive defense as a whole."

(On how Rob Ryan is going to make the defense better)- "We are just breaking down the fundamentals. We are continuing to do tackeling drills, pursuit. We just continue to do things to develop your technique, your pursuit, tackling. Constantly going through criticism and breaking down what we are doing wrong, the alignment, a slight shave from a four to a five to make a difference in the plays. We are really concentrating on a lot of the idiosyncrasies of our defense and just trying to make sure everything is perfect. After that, you let your players play."

Dang if I know. When you consider Paul Brown invented the darn things you'd think the Browns of all team would have them ironed out by now. I was the same thing last year.

One thing I hadn't considered though; maybe it's DA's head and not the radio.

All I know is they better get them fixed.

thanks ddubia for the 'scripts.
Ammo, we're on the internet.... I understand you wanting to describe a nice-looking fan, but there's millions of pics of hot women on the 'Net. An MB description doesn't have the same impact haha.

It's on the Browns home page, in the multimedia vault. I saw the pass, Legget got behind Rod Hood and Nick Sorenson. The throw looks like a duck when it left his hand. I think he is still having problems with trajectory, and he has always had a wobbly deep ball. That is never good in the wind we have on the lake. But he did get him the ball and it was a TD- that's what matters.
Anderson made the big mistake down by the goal line, can't be doing that. I wonder if The white team was stealing signals...lol it looked as if DQ knew exactly the play and the hot read...all the QB's did some good things and bad. You realize that is the first deep ball I think Quinn has completed in three years. That was good to see.

Given how it was difficult to breathe and I felt like I was swimming through air just to walk because it was so humid, I was surprised even 100 people showed up.

There were a lot of people looking for shade in the concourse too and sitting in the A/C in the team shop, Gridiron Grille and the other bar in the lower level (I can't remember the name), so there was a pretty good crowd...

I thought that between seats in the shade and the occasional breeze, the heat was quite manageable, even though it was in the mid-90s. Must've been that blonde that was getting to Ammo.

Rogers looking good on defensive line
By MIKE McLAIN Tribune Chronicle POSTED: August 10, 2009 Save | Print |

CLEVELAND - A few months ago there was conjecture that Browns defensive lineman Shaun Rogers wanted to be traded.

Rogers sure seems happy to be back with the team now. He topped off a string of impressive practice showings Sunday with a dominant performance in the Brown and White scrimmage won by the Brown squad, 17-14, at Cleveland Browns Stadium.

Rogers was a handful for rookie center Alex Mack. The 6-4, 350-pound Rogers not only won battles with brute strength, but he also exhibited outstanding short-range quickness.

"I didn't give him everything, but I gave him enough so I could get some work in," Rogers said. "I still have to do my job. I'm still being evaluated and graded every day. I have to perform to a certain level of expectations."

Rogers has the prototypical look of a two-gap nose tackle, but he has the quickness to be a one-gap defender. He might get more chances to aggressively attack gaps in defensive coordinator Rob Ryan's scheme.

"Rob Ryan has a history in this league of good defenses," Rogers said. "I'm just looking forward to performing in the defense. Hopefully, it has much more of an impact."

Rogers and the rest of the first-team defense was on the field quite a bit in what was easily the hottest day since training camp opened Aug. 1. The temperature at the start of the scrimmage was in the low 90s.

"Every day is a good day that you're out there," he said. "You always could be far worse. You could be on the sideline with an injury or you could just not have a job at all."

MIDSEASON FORM: The best player on the field might have been inside linebacker D'Qwell Jackson. He dropped running back Jamal Lewis for a short loss on the first play of action. He ended a Brown drive with an interception near the goal line.
In general, Jackson was seemingly everywhere.

"If you can't (get up for a scrimmage), then I don't know what's wrong with you. You're not a competitor," said Jackson, who's in a contract year. "I know when those lights are on, that's when the stars shine. It's not just because of my natural abilities. It's the guys up front, the calls and guys willing to sacrifice to be the best."

STAY COOL: Quarterback Derek Anderson appeared to lose his cool when he threw the ball at Rogers after being sacked. Anderson was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct.
"Derek was already sacked. He was trying to get it to be incomplete," Rogers said. "That was null and void. I'll talk to Derek about that later."

FAST START: Receiver Lance Leggett opened the scrimmage with a bang. On the first play for the White, Leggett beat cornerback Rod Hood to haul in a 51-yard touchdown pass from Brady Quinn. Safety Nick Sorensen was late on deep coverage.
"It was a great throw by Brady," Leggett said. "Once I saw the ball in the air, I kept running and ran up under it."

UP THE MIDDLE: Running back Noah Herron, a five-year veteran, had the run of the day when he broke free on a 39-yard touchdown play.
Herron was drafted by the Steelers in 2005. The Packers signed him off the Steelers' practice squad that year. He spent three seasons in Green Bay and was in Tampa last season.

"Any time you come from a different team, obviously the culture changes," Herron said. "At the same time, when you have a new staff coming in, it changes even more."

AT HOME: Third-string quarterback Brett Ratliff had an impressive showing. He connected with David Patten on a 62-yard touchdown pass. He hooked up again with Patten later on a play covering 48 yards.
Playing here in a preseason game last year as a member of the New York Jets, Ratliff threw a long touchdown pass to David Clowney.

"Ratliff did a nice job in his opportunities, hitting Patten on those two deep balls," coach Eric Mangini said.

NO BIG DEAL: Mangini responded to a report that the agent for receiver Syndric Steptoe, Jerome Stanley, was upset that Mangini changed the practice format Saturday. The agent blamed the change for a shoulder injury suffered by Steptoe.
"The practice we had planned was the same practice that we executed," Mangini said. "Seventy-nine other guys were able to practice effectively."

Steptoe tore a labrum and is done for the season.

ROSTER MOVE: The Browns signed offensive lineman Fred Weary on Sunday. Originally selected in the third round of the 2002 NFL draft by the Houston Texans, Weary (6-4, 307 pounds) was a first-team All-American and first-team All-Southeastern Conference player as a senior at Tennessee.
Weary started 43 of 63 games in which he played in seven seasons with the Texans.

A: This is a low blow cheap shot.

B: I never said I wouldn't want him on my team, but that I don't like players with personalities like his. Big difference.

Im wondering if Leggett will get his chance now that Steptoe is out for the year. Im thinking they keep 5 WRs.

Edwards
Mossaqui
Robiskie
Furrey
Leggett or Patten or Hubbard

Leggett and Hubbard are eligible for the PS and I dont see a dime a dozen WR being claimed off the PS. I also dont know what those 2 contribute to special teams if anything at all.

Edwards should return to form and with Stallworths 17 catches and 170 yards, I see this years WRs as an upgrade.

Cheap shot ... Please You said "

" He is a very talented player, but not the type of personality I want on my team.

So for the record : You like or dislike Mr. Rogers in Brown & Orange . Yes or No will suffice

I'm glad we traded for him, I'm glad we gave him his contract and I'm glad he's a Brown. I wish he wasn't an idiot.

I've seen several interviews with Shaun Rogers, and he is far from an idiot. I think he is a sensitive guy... but no idiot. Along with Joe T., SR is the best player we have.

I think Leggett can make it over Hubbard and Patten....

..BUT- I think Cribbs is going to be the 5th WR. It only makes sense. Besides, the guy will never get a new contract just playing special teams and not making it as a WR. They are going to incorporate him somewhat into the offense regularly. Lining up as a wide out instead of coming in twice a game and knowing his either taking the snap or running a gadget play/reverse.

He seems like a bright guy, no doubt, but his character would classify him as a bit of an idiot. He whines, complains, is lazy, and has no work ethic.

I haven't heard too much whining and complaining from him, not yet.
As for being lazy and no work ethic (same thing really)... I haven't heard that either. Alot of fat guys appear lazy because... they are fat.
He's not lazy on Sundays. Even if he takes a play off now and again, he's still more productive than most guys on our D who give the proverbial "110 per cent".

Don't be doggin' on my D boy Shaun. He's a monster in a nightmare who's come to wreak havoc.
