That's what they say, but you can typically see what your first day picks look like by the second year.

I know that you must be disappointed that MoMass is contributing and possibly even starting the season since you already pegged him among the greatest draft day blunders in Browns history:

Quote:

this draft is so deep at WR....the Massa pick will go down in Browns draft blunder history....will be fun looking back at this draft in 3-4 years and see all the other WR who contributed and being picked after Massa..."why 2?" will become a running gag, Mangini will be gone and the homers confess they didn´t like him from the get go, lol

but seriously...the guy worked hard this offseason and showed why Mangini had the respect in him...he has talent, he did not just "excel at interviewing"

You definitely can't judge them after the first pre-season, especially WRs who usually take a couple years to develop.

Rumor is that bennet may get cut by the chargers, frankly I don't see it.

The Browns would be foolish not to pick him up. He would be a significant upgrade.

I agree. And although I had high hopes for Carey, if that's the worst mistake Mangini will make this year, then we roll with it. Now if he doesn't start Quinn or even trades him, then all bets are off with this guy. So far - and granted it's early - I think he's done more good than bad, but there is still time for him to really screw up. I just hope it's nothing major.

He already screwed up in April...the offseason was a joke....looks like all 4 top picks aren't real upgrades to start the season even though at positions of major need, esp. the 2nd round looks like a big fat FAIL job....Veikune is horrible out there, Robo managed to be even worse than Massa which is saying a lot

You have GOT to be kidding me dude.... the entire second round is a "FAIL job". Yup, we got us enough of that there evidence that them boys' is BUSTS! Can make yerself a rational conclusion after 4 pre-season games, mhm.

Wow. It's been one full preseason and our 2009 NFL draft class is a fail job

The way I figure it, after this second round of failure; Django probably has approximately a year to get his resume ready for Mr. Lerner. By then, the failed Man/Kok experiment should be off to some other far-off destination, looking to dupe some other owners into letting them play "Football Operations for Dummies" with their franchise.

That did seem to be a rather odd course of action when he cut him.. I get the feeling that Mangini is not the type to just go off without reason. so I keep wondering what Carey did or said to tick him off..

In either case, let's not label mangini an idiot for cutting a 6th round pick.. I mean, it's a 6th rounder.. is it really that surprising?

They basically acknolwdged that they messed up by saying that nobody claimed a guy like this in 3 years...it was 100% outsmart move...just a 6th? but we did that great 2 spot trade downs in round 1 to get it

and Mangini isn't an idiot...that's part of his problem, he is a robot

as to labeling rookies: yeah it's early but don't forget I'm a draft nik, so I know a thing or 2 about those guys/saw CFB film on them etc. ....Veikune was a hot 3rd/4th round project....he wasn't even paying attention to the 1st day of the draft. CB S.Smith otoh hand was a premium talent, big, physical with cover skills, bigger school, 1st to 2nd rounder...he dropped all the way to MIA at the end of round 2....he is their #2 CB right now and played great thus far (watch his 1handed RZ INT last game)....why do I mention this? because even though it's early there ARE rookies drafted AFTER Veikune, Robo, Massa who are doing MUCH better and are HIGHER on the depth chart on BETTER teams....what does that tell you?

Titans' cuts ...

Titans release returner Jones, CB Faggins

By Jim Wyatt
THE TENNESSEAN

The Titans on Friday released returner Mark Jones, according to the player's agent. The team also parted ways with several other players.

The move leaves the team without an experienced return man for the regular season opener at Pittsburgh on Thursday night. Several other players have also been informed of their release on Friday as well, including receiver Paul Williams, a third round draft pick by the team in 2007, veteran fullback Casey Cramer and a pair of veteran linebackers.

The Titans also released cornerback DeMarcus Faggins, signed as an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

Jones was signed as an unrestricted free agent this offseason after playing last season at Carolina. After being injured earlier in training camp, Jones performed well in Thursday's preseason win over the Packers, and said after the game he hoped he'd secured a roster spot. Jones averaged 22 yards on four kickoff returns, and 13.5 yards on two punt returns.

But agent Brian Levy confirmed on Friday Jones had in fact been released.

"He was released this morning,'' agent Brian Levy said. "A bit surprising.''

All NFL teams must be down to 53 players by 5 p.m. Saturday. So far the team has released at least 19 players on Friday Three more players will need to be released to get to 53.

Jones signed a two-year deal with the team this offseason that included a $200,000 signing bonus.

Rookie Running back Javon Ringer could return kicks against the Steelers, but it remains to be seen who will return punts.

Players who've also been informed of their release: linebackers Rocky Boiman and Josh Stamer, safeties Tuff Harris and Nick Schommer, defensive tackle Mitch King, offensive linemen Ryan Durand, Jason Murphy, Cory Lekkerkerker, and Fernando Velasco, tight end Matthew Mulligan, defensive tackle LaJuan Ramsey, receiver Phillip Morris, cornerback Tanard Davis, running back Rodney Ferguson and punter A.J. Trapasso. The Titans indicated they were interesting in bringing Velasco and Morris back to their practice squad if they clear waivers.

Williams, who played in 5 games over the past two seasons, still has practice squad eligibility.

The Titans signed Faggins to a two-year contract as well this offseason, which included a $200,000 signing bonus. Schommer was a 7th round draft pick by the Titans.

Could the Browns actually release Jamal Lewis today?

Saturday, September 05, 2009

Mary Kay Cabot
Plain Dealer Reporter

Could Browns running back Jamal Lewis be cut today when the Browns trim their roster to 53?

NFL sources said rumblings began a couple of days ago that Lewis, who turned 30 last week, could be one of the dozen players the Browns let go, and ESPN.com's Adam Schefter on Friday put Lewis at the top of his list of big-name players on the bubble. Nationalfootballpost.com's Mike Lombardi also speculated Lewis will be cut.

The question is, would the Browns release a player after giving him a $3.5 million roster bonus in March? Would they put the ball in the hands of rookie running back James Davis? And what about Je rome Harrison, still recovering from a left knee in jury?

"Nobody has told us anything about Jamal," said his agent, Mitch Frankel. "We've had no conversations with the Browns about him, and no one has told Jamal anything."

Frankel said he would be surprised if the Browns part with the 10th-year pro.

"Jamal is a great asset to that team," he said. "But anything can happen in the NFL."

Frankel said Lewis, who also has heard the speculation, is taking it one day at a time.

"We'll wait and see like everyone else," he said.

Lewis, coming back from off-season ankle surgery, averaged 2.6 yards per carry on his 24 preseason carries with a long gain of 11. He hinted during an interview on his birthday, Aug. 26, that he wasn't going all out yet. However, his protege, Davis, averaged 7.8 yards per carry and scored on an 81-yard burst against the Lions, although many of those yards came against backups.

After Thursday night's game in Chicago, during which Lewis and the rest of the starters were idle, Lewis praised the young back, who picked up a blitz on a touchdown pass and blocked well on Gerard Lawson's 55-yard kickoff return.

"I've known him for a long time, and to see him come out here and do a good job and take things in the way he has and handle things like a real professional, that's a great deal," said Lewis, who attended the same high school as Davis in Atlanta. "He runs good, and he looks good, and he's going to be a great back."

He's also spent much of the off-season mentoring his apparent successor.

"Whatever I know, I try to give to him, and he takes it and adds to it everything else that he has and makes it special," said Lewis, who rushed for 1,304 yards in 2007. "I try to let him know everything I did wrong and how to make it right."

Lewis, who last season became the 24th back in NFL history to reach 10,000 career yards, also was looking forward to sharing reps with the rookie.

"When they brought him here, I was like, 'That's cool,' because I remember him from high school, so being able to be in the same backfield with him and practices and the same meeting rooms, and actually share my experiences with him, it's a good deal," said Lewis. "I had a Priest Holmes [as a mentor] when I came in the league, and I try to pass the same things down."

If the Browns cut Lewis, that would mean they paid him $10 million for the 1,002-yard season he had in 2008. Signed to a three-year extension by then-GM Phil Savage in 2008, Lewis made $6.5 million in 2008, including bonuses, and then the $3.5 million roster bonus in 2009.

Would it be wise to cut him after that kind of investment? His base salary for 2009 is $2.4 million, which he would not get if released.

"Eric Mangini and George Kokinis are running the team, and they can do whatever they want," Frankel said of the Browns coach and GM.

If it does happen, the Browns potentially would have at least $19 million on the books this season for players who are either gone, on the bench, or coming off it. Derek Anderson, who could be the backup quarterback, received a $5 million roster bonus in April. Corey Williams, who's playing behind Robaire Smith at right end, received a $6 million bonus. Receiver Donté Stallworth, who's suspended for the season, received a $4.5 million bonus, and Lewis got $3.5 million.

The deadline for final cuts is 6 p.m. today.

Others on the bubble:

Rookie receiver Jordan Norwood, who showed promise early in camp, dropped a potential touchdown pass in Chicago and could be headed for the practice squad. . . . Second-year tight end Martin Rucker hopes to get the nod over free-agent tight end Aaron Walker. "[Saturday] comes with some butterflies, but I feel I had a good camp and worked as hard as I could," Rucker said. . . . Running back Noah Herron suffered what appeared to be a stinger and sat out most of the Chicago game, but could make the team if Lewis doesn't. . . . Linebacker Beau Bell, the Browns' fourth-round pick in 2008, might not make the team. . . . Receiver Paul Hubbard could be headed back to the practice squad. So could second-year receiver Lance Leggett. . . . Linebacker Leon Williams could get beaten out by rookie free agent Marcus Benard.

What is CBF film. I'm asking.

Quote:

...Veikune was a hot 3rd/4th round project..

Was that as a DE project since that was his college position? As in he has a great motor and athletic skills but needs to put on some weight and strength to play DE in the pros so that makes him a project?

Most draft reports I've seen, (and honestly I don't go nuts looking for them nor do I pay much attention to them not being a draft nik myself), rates players at their position. Sometimes I've seen them say a DE player projects as an OLB in a 3-4 because he's too small to play DE in a 4-3, but still, their primary evaluation is at their playing position.

Veikune, being a DE was likely considered to be a possiblity at OLB in a 3-4 as a project but M/K projected him as an ILB in their 3-4 which I doubt may draft reports considered much if at all.

So, does that make him a project? Yes. But these guys think a lot of his mental ability, motor and athleticism and have had him take reps at ILB, OLB and DE in camp. I assume that's to give him a more thorough, in-depth knowledge of the entire front 7 responsibilities which will only serve him well as he progresses. But the price to pay for that is a longer learning curve as he tries to absorb all that information and adjust to the pro game.

As you and I and others have seen and mentioned, it looks like he's thinking too much giving the impression he's slow to react. Well sure he is. Cat's been playing in a pro scheme for one short offseason and at several positions at that. I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, which I would want granted to me were I under the same circumstances.

Dude might be the worst bust in the history of the NFL draft. But my thinking is that to expect him to play, here at the pro level, while being out of position, and judge him as though he played this position all through his college career is unfair at least.

It tells me that CB S. Smith is playing the same position he's played all through his college career and has only the upgrade to the next level of competition to deal with. That's a mighty tall order in itself on any rookie. But now put him in Veikune's situation and give him reps at CB and both safety positions then drop him in at safety and see how fast and instinctively he plays in the preseason.

It also tells me that he's on a team who did rather well last season and has that going for him along with at least that season and heading into this one as some bit of continuity that is lacking here in Cleveland. They have already evaluated their roster before the draft from the perspective and viewpoint of having watched them play an entire season on the field. Here in Cleveland we won't be at that point until this season is over. That is huge in as far as the type of team each of these players repsectively find themselves. Smith lucked out compared to all of our picks in that regard.

As to Robo and Mass they are on a team who can't even decide on a starting QB, are playing in an offense that was just installed this camp and everybody is adjusting, Not just them. No one has any experience in it. Do you think either of them would be doing even slightly better if we had only one starting QB under consideration? How about if all the offensive players had at least one season under their belt in this offense? How many times early in camp do you think our rookie WR's have asked a question of a veteran only to get an answer from a player who is not completely sure of the answer himself? A lot can be said for the impact of consistency. These guys know no consistency as yet.

We've likely got a RB who was drafted in the 6th round this year, Davis, who may end up 2nd on the depth chart behind only a legend. What does that say about CB Smith? Should he then be the #1 CB since he was drafted so much higher than Davis and he has no legend ahead of him? Naw.

I don't think comparing one player to another as to where they fall on their particular team's depth chart, regardless of where they were drafted is fair at all. Each team has their strengths and weaknesses at depth. For example, Leonard was at the bottom of our DL depth chart but is now with Carolina who needed him much more than we did, yet they are a better team than we are. Each team is different. That's not a fair nor even a legitimate statistic to use as a comparison.

Maybe I'm way off base here and the adjustment to the pro scheme and the pro level while playing several positions in camp, as Veikune has done, should be a breeze for your average 2nd round rookie to overcome and play at a high level in his third and fourth preseason game. Maybe. And understand, I'm not disagreeing with you then stating that Veikune is the next Hall of Famer from the Browns. But I am all for giving a guy an even break and an honest chance.

You know, as I read your posts and the negative responses you get from them, (some of those don't count a sliver since they're coming from fanboys with love/hate relationships with players regardless of the real football considerations evaluating players), I see an underlying theme. It seems like you had a completely different draft board than did the Browns so they drafted not only different positions than you would have gone for but also different players at the same positions you would have taken.

It seems to have resulted in what I'll call sour grapes and has caused you too unfairly and prematurely hate on a player or two, or three, because they were the wrong position or player at the right position to take at that slot in your opinion.

As with everything else, I could be way off base here. But to consider the draft, with the possible exception of a player or two in the later rounds, a complete and utter failure before the picks even step off the podium is pretty harsh and appears to lack any form of compromise. Harsh I say, because we are about a week away from the season opener and you're still harping, yes harping, harping and persistently dwelling on the draft picks and why M/K's are a failure and yours would have been better.

You've got a lot of good football knowledge and are greatly educated in the draft and I've learned some from reading your posts instead of just scrolling past the barrage of negativity they carry. My advice, should I be so bold, would be to accept our roster, including the draft picks, as it is what it is at this point and we all must move on to the upcoming season.

You somehow remind me of the guy who's wife locked the keys in the car at the mall parking lot and he is then forced to work in a pouring rain to pry the door and retrieve them. He spends the rest of the day telling her how she should be more responsible with the keys and always remember to pull them and put them in a safe place. He wastes no opportunity that day to remind her of her blunder while making logical, and probably correct, suggestions as to what she should have done. He does this as though by the mere constant harping on the issue it will somehow magically happen that the keys will have never had been locked in the car in the first place. But it's too late. They were. It is what it is. He can't make it un-happen.

As time goes on we'll all recap this draft and your take may well be spot on. But at this juncture all you have to go on is your opinion, just like everyone else who has studied the draft, (namely M/K for one small group), and it carries little weight until the facts are in.

If you feel this analysis has helped you in any way you can email me a nickle.

I hope you're right. Lewis is a dedicated, hard-working player that always stays in great shape and always gives 100% effort. (As opposed to, say, Shaun Rogers, who apparently thinks its okay to spend the entire pre-season on an exercise bike while his teammates are sweating their onions off in two-a-days.) But if the legs are gone, they're gone. If that is Mangini's judgement, Lewis is gone. You have to admit his production in pre-season games was not up to par. The first step appears to be gone.

For better or worse, it's pretty apparent that the HC and/or the coaching staff didn't agree with your thinking..

But again, this doesn't happen for no reason, something happened, Carey must have said something or done something or taken something. Or maybe one of the coaches provoked him and that lead to some problem or during a physical they found something they didn't expect

As for trading him,, what would his value be.. Picture this, he's drafted in the 6th round by a team that is open minded enough to let the other two 6th rounder they have play and flourish, and they already want to trade him.. How's that look? anyone that would bite on that is idiotic?

If I'm an exec with another team, I wanna know why they would be willing to let him go.

All I'm saying is, something is fishy.. something that we will probably never know about happened...

But that's JMO,,

Just throwing this out there, but are they allowed to trade a guy they just drafted? I have to think they can, but maybe there are rules we aren't aware of.

I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

Well, I would say that the coaching staff of the Cleveland Browns is probably more capable of deciding these things then a draftnic. And I"m sure you are terrific at it man.. But geez,, come on?

As for Mangini, it sure sounds as if you have a grudge against him or something. Robot? OK,, but I don't get that comment at all..

Dominic Rhodes an early surprise cut
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on September 5, 2009 12:05 PM ET
Even Marshawn Lynch's suspension couldn't get Dominic Rhodes on Buffalo's opening roster.

The former Colt, who was expected to provide a veteran presence behind Fred Jackson while Lynch missed the first three games of the season, was released by the Bills Saturday, according to Fox's Alex Marvez.

Xavier Omon is set up to be the team's third running back after Rhodes' release and will likely get carries in the first three games of the season.

Browns cut Ivy
Posted by Tom Curran on September 5, 2009 12:22 PM ET

Cornerback Corey Ivy will be among the players released by the Browns today as Cleveland cuts down to 53 according to PFT strongman, Mike Florio.

Signed in March after spending three seasons in the AFC North with the Bengals, the 32-year-old Ivy couldn't beat out the competition for the nickel corner spot. Ivy's release means that rookie Coye Francies and veteran Hank Poteat will likely make the cut.

Given he played 16 games for the Ravens last season and still has some tread left on his tires, Ivy will likely be a guy that will latch on somewhere.

Browns | Ivy currently leading at nickel CB

Marla Ridenour, of the Akron Beacon Journal, reports Cleveland Browns CB Corey Ivy is currently the team's nickel cornerback. However, CB Coye Francies could find himself filling the nickel cornerback role before the season ends.

Actually, Veikune was projected to be a better fit at ILB by some good scouts, even being compared to a Bruschi....I was kinda "happy" when they announced that he'll be moved there because I trusted those reports and he just didn't look explosive enough at OLB...but he was an overdraft in my book from the minute the pick was made

Nobody is expecting him to look great or dominate...but a 2nd rounder shouldn't look like garbage either and that's what he looks like right now...Benard and Brown were not drafted and also play out of position...they simply don't look this bad...oh, and Veikune isn't only "thinking"...he's also simply athletically limited...on the TD pass to Gaines he not only was waay too late to recognize the play...he was also slow...he has no closing speed...once the guy is beyond him = sayonara

Veikune would be a sure fire cut just going on tape (same with Robo btw)....but his status of overdraft assures his spot

I applaud you for your calmness and thank you for your suggestions ...rest assured, I'll be the biggest fanboy of those same clowns come gameday...believe it or not: my only agenda is the Browns winning again

Back to actual roster cuts...and not the ones who deserve to be cut

Oh and CFB = CollegeFootball

Dude you do know that very few WRs are great players in their first year right? I'm sure Mangini knows this too and decided to draft now and let them grow so that way when it's time to make a run they will be experienced. Many consider the WR position as the hardest transition into the NFL. So basically it's WAAAAYYYY to early to judge them.

That's surprising. I thought he was actually doing pretty well this preseason.

An NFL source has told Scout.com that linebacker Beau Bell will be released by the Cleveland Browns today.

The second-year player appeared in four games during his rookie season in Cleveland and contributed primarily on special teams. During the Browns' seventh game at Jacksonville, he forced a fumble on kickoff returns coverage that set up the team for a field goal. Bell sustained a knee injury late in the season and landed on Injured Reserve.

The 6-foot-1, 250-pound linebacker was the team's fourth-round selection in the 2008 NFL Draft out of UNLV. During his college career he logged 320 tackles, second-best in school history.

Well, I would say that the coaching staff of the Cleveland Browns is probably more capable of deciding these things then a draftnic...

Never underestimate the ability of the Cleveland Browns to totaly screw up a sure thing. Everytime I think they can't ... they outdo themselves.

Evidence, everything from the Oliphant trade to the Helmut throw game.

on a completly different subject, because I didn't follow the above statement's reference, on a completly different subject, IF the Browns cut Jamal Lewis, it will be the 3rd time since 99 that they have cut their most proven runningback from the previous season.
Travis Prentice, William Green, and IF ? ,
and the last two times it was a detriment in running TD's and runs for 3rd down conversion I would argue ...
But I didn't go look it up.

Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

Browns cut Ivy
Posted by Tom Curran on September 5, 2009 12:22 PM ET

Cornerback Corey Ivy will be among the players released by the Browns today as Cleveland cuts down to 53 according to PFT strongman, Mike Florio.

Signed in March after spending three seasons in the AFC North with the Bengals Ravens, the 32-year-old Ivy couldn't beat out the competition for the nickel corner spot. Ivy's release means that rookie Coye Francies and veteran Hank Poteat will likely make the cut.

Given he played 16 games for the Ravens last season and still has some tread left on his tires, Ivy will likely be a guy that will latch on somewhere.

No surprises so far. What a bust Bell was... I'm more curious to see what kind of talent we'll vulture off the waiver wire... this roster has its fair share of bums just waiting to be replaced.

I have a question for everyone. Would it be crazy to move Jamal to FB? I mean the guy can block and would be perfect for short yardage situations.

Rookie OT Will Be Among Cuts
by Ed Thompson of ScoutNFLNetwork.com, September 5, 2009 at 12:54pm ET

Augustus Parrish Profile

An NFL source has told Scout.com that offensive tackle Gus Parrish will be released by the Cincinnati Bengals today.

The undrafted rookie initially signed on with the New Orleans Saints but was waived in June. The Bengals picked him up in early August.

The former Kent State offensive lineman has experience at both tackle and guard. The three-year starter has good mobility at his position, but his late start with the team undoubtedly hurt his chances of making the final cuts.

He can? I've never seen Jamal as a good blocker. And when we have Vickers, it would be pretty stupid IMO. We have no need for another fullback, especially one making $6 million.

I like vickers better.....Lewis should finish out this season as our number 2, and then will either retire or be released at the end of the season. I expect him to be our starter for ummm....say 5 weeks or so....then a mix of him and Davis....then towards the end of the year Davis will be our feature back....

Just throwing this out there, but are they allowed to trade a guy they just drafted? I have to think they can, but maybe there are rules we aren't aware of.

I never heard of one, but I don't know for sure..

Why not? See Eli Manning and Phillip Rivers..

Eli Manning and Phillip Rivers were traded for one another several years ago .....

Is there an echo in here?

That's what I get for answering in the middle of a thread .....

LOL Well, It's hard to argue with that thought.. the only saving grace if there is one, is that this regime is brand new and to my knowledge, hasn't really done anything really really stupid yet. some would say that Carey thing was a mistake,, we'll see.. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt on that.

As for the Browns dumping leading rushers.. Yeah, Travis Prentice was our leading rusher.,.. but what did he have in the way of production.. virtually nothing to write home about... William Green self destructed. I won't lay that off on anyone but Green himself.

Trading Rubin Droughns may have been a bigger mistake.. Prior to Lewis, Rubin was the best back we've had since 1999. But he was having some off field issues as well and his production did drop off some. (I seem to remember him being injured for a time.. not sure)
