Why start a new QB thread? Everything has been pretty peaceful around here.
Any, you are wrong, Mangini has not named his starter, publicly or privately. Mangini declined to name his starter for Sunday's season opener against Minnesota. Before practice Monday, he said he has not yet told Brady Quinn or Derek Anderson who won the job.
If this is true, he should be fired right now..
Its true LINK
HACK
I guess you dont have the link where Mangini stated that he is going to have both QBs in his office individually and tell them who won the job and why? The team knows who the starter is. As much as you follow the Browns, I would expect you to know better. Its evident that you are looking for any reason to bash Mangini or any reason to bash the Browns. You try to make it look like your here to talk football so you can bash them here, where we can all read it instead of the smack shack
I would put money on it that Tomlin will not win a Super Bowl win Dick Lebeau retires. Most of his accomplishments have come from Cowhers leftovers of players and coaches.
No I don't have that link....Post it so your fellow Brown fans can read it. I read that one...and posted it in answer to a fellow board member wondering if its true...I did not scour the internet looking for every article...

All I can say is I really REALLY hope that if Mangini decides to put Anderson out there that our own fans don't boo. Anderson is still a Cleveland Brown, even if he's not the golden (dome) boy.
I agree 100%. I would never boo a Browns player for winning the job EVER. Maybe if he flicked off the fans because he was upset with himself, like Cutler, Ryan Leaf, or Rivers has done but not for the coach thinking he was the best man for the job.
There was a qoute in Sprots Illus.(Aug 10, 09 page42) from Bernie Kosar where he said "Theres a game after the game in the NFL- which Kosar called it the 5th quarter- in which the starting QB is supposed to send an upbeat signal to the press and to the public." This is one thing that I dont see as much from Anderson as I do from other starting QBs around the league. IMO, I think that is one reason alot of fans support Quinn over Anderson and not who is the best man for the job. I have yet to see Anderson go out of his way to appease the fans and the media. That dont mean that he doesnt, it just means I havnt seen it. But I have seen it in training camps from Kosar back in the day to Brady Quinn in the present. To me it seems like Anderson wants nothing to do with the exra things it takes to appease the fans. But I will still root for him and want him to succeed as long as hes in Cleveland.

I believe Quinn is the starter, and I also believe that the players know, but it has not been made official. I'm sure Mangini will tell the team AFTER he talks with both QBs. That would be the right thing to do. It is Labor Day, anyone think that maybe the players are taking a day off? I don't see the coaches calling them all in to announce the starter on a holiday. As was mentioned, Wednesday starts the prep for the Vikings, I'm sure that when practice starts the starter will be known by all. Mangini is to much of a perfectionist for me to believe he would keep his team in the dark until the last minute. The reps have been equal, both have had time with the recievers and line. The game plan will be implemented this week and the starter will get ALL the reps with the ones. All this bashing going on of Mangini is just an extension of all the other crap said about him by the fans that don't like him. Guys like Django probably salivate anytime anything is said negative about the coach, his agenda has been clear to many for a while. I got a question for Og. You keep propping up DA, using the probowl in his first year as a starter. You do know that he would not have been there, except for the fact that Brady didn't want to play. He was an alternate, big difference. Also if he's really that good, how can Quinn be so bad? DA a probowler can't beat out a guy who has started 3 games. Funny how you can flip that weak arguement around and use it both ways. The past is the past. The preseason showed the one who performed better in this offense. IMO Quinn looked the part and I would be totally shocked if he isn't starting Sunday.

Joe Thomas went to the Pro Bowl because Jason Peters was injured, but you never see anyone taking that away from him...

Hack - you're a good guy, a bit misguided on your choice of an NFL team to support but you talk football not smack and offer an opposing perspective. On the QB's and who is it? Seriously do we care any longer? This is getting so old. Quinn didn't separate himself enough from DA in the preseason and allows this deadbate to continue. By virtue, I don't think either one of them are the answer for us. As far as Mangini holding it close to his vest who the starter is because of the advantage it's going to give him against Minnesota. Not surprisingly, Minnesota doesn't seem the least bit concerned. Quote:
Vikings unconcerned about Browns QB mystery
September 7, 2009 7:04 PM Posted by ESPN.com’s James Walker
Earlier Monday, we wondered if the Minnesota Vikings really cared that Cleveland Browns wouldn't name a starting quarterback this week between Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson.
It turns out the Vikings don’t.
Here is a snippet from Minnesota coach Brad Childress’ Monday press conference:
Q: How does it impact your game planning with the Browns’ starting quarterback battle not being settled?
“It doesn’t. You just schematically look at what you’ve seen. You are going to go back and look at Jets tape and see what you’ve seen. I know, as do our guys, there are going to be unscouted looks. I mean, they certainly haven’t showed their whole hand offensively or defensively (in the preseason). But you are just going back and looking at, formation-wise, where they are putting people, and what kind of players they are. It will be more about us deploying than about what they do.”—Childress
Browns coach Eric Mangini contends the quarterback mystery will create confusion for Minnesota’s defense. Childress says it won't.
Only one coach will be correct on Sunday.

Do you really think Childress would admit to having to prepare for both? It has to be done. The QB runs the offense. If the two are different, the preparation is different. I'm sure he was going to come out and say, crap we are all mixed up This is just another hack writer trying to fill space. ESPN has questioned everything Mangini has done. They don't like him and it is apparent. I'm sure defenses will prepare the same for the Vikings if either Jackson or Favre started. It's a chess match, and if a coach feels it will help, I don't see the problem. The press does, because they want a story and can't get one. I can gaurantee that if the Browns lose Sunday, there will be many stories about how Mangini blew it by starting who he does.

Not unless the QB is the main reason for the loss. You know, say 3-4 INTs that lead to Minny points. Barring that I would bet that a majority of the articles will mention our inability to stop the run as a key to the loss.

I'm pretty sure that's why I stated " Not surprisingly, Minnesota doesn't seem the least bit concerned." Not surprisingly being the operative phrase! So no, I don't really think they would admit it even if it were true. You should really read and think for just a moment before rolling your eyes at someone.

I was thinking the same thing. Childress aint going to admit he was tricked or outcoached. No coach will. we have seen forsome time now that coaches and GMs will lie or do anything they can to outfox an opponent. When it comes to the draft or game preperations. Belicheck puts Tom Brady on the injured list every week. So when an opposing coach says that he isnt concerned about Bradys injury status and it doesnt change the teams preperations, is ESPN going to say "Only one coach will be correct on Sunday"?
What a stupid statement. So whoever wins the game this Sunday, its because of which coach was correct with their lying chess match Not the execution of the players.
Like the local writers, ESPN dont like coaches not handing out stories to make their job easier. Remember the fluff piece on ESPN about Bradys injury status every week? Belicheck, Brady, and the o-line were all joking about Bradys injury status. It gave ESPN a 5 minute piece on the undefeated Patriots where we could all laugh at that wiley Bill Belicheck and his wiley little head games he plays. ESPN isnt going to applaud a head coach that doesnt give them insider information.

Great point. Stopping Peterson and being able to put up points to make Minnesota have to do something other than handing it off is way more important as to who the Browns are starting and how Childress is gameplanning the defense.

I think the press loves what Mangini is doing...as it gives them something to talk about.....Had he just said..._____ is the starting QB two weeks ago.....it would have been a dead story...Mangini has a secret is much more entertaining to talk about.
Honestly...I do not get why its still a secret.....Its not like are you preparing for Farve or Vick?.....from an outsiders perspective its more are you preparing for dark blue or light blue.

Childress is full of crap saying it makes no difference but what else is he to say? Mangini says it's harder to game plan for two different QB's and he'd have every DC and HC in the league laughing at him if it weren't true.
No matter how you look at it or what Childress says DA and BQ are different QB's and would run a different game plan depending who started and the Vikes will be forced to split their prep time between the two. It might not be 50/50 but even if it's 80/20 they are wasting 20% of their preparation time as they wouldn't have to do that if they knew who the starter was in advance.
How much difference will it make as to the outcome of the game? That depends. If they were otherwise equal matchups then it would be a lot. Since they are not, the Vikes are a superior team at this point, it will make less difference. If they use most of their time preparing for the wrong QB they'll adjust pretty well as the game progresses. So it's likely not much of an edge but any edge at all is big time useful for the Browns and they have to take it if they can get it. It would be stupid not to do that.

Statistically this Preseason. BQ v/ Mobility and Pocket presence. BQ v/ Game Management. BQ v/ Leadership. BQ v/ Intangibles. BQ v/
Well its obvious to me.
DA's the Starter
I would be shocked if it was DA...
Lets cut the Crapola and get this season underway. The team finds out tomorrow as if they didn't know already. But Mangini said that the Starter will get 80% of the reps (actually stated normal starter reps) - so there will be no secret after tomorrow. Wonder how good the team is keeping a secret. One wife, one Mom or Dad and it could be blown.

First year as a FULL TIME starter he makes the pro-bowl, yes he had a few rough games but it was his first full year starting. Give the guy a break.
Here's what I know.. a player makes a mistake once, and around here, he's branded..
It's not just around here, most Browns fans are like that.
I was at my local bar a few weeks ago and I was talking to this girl that was wearing a Browns shirt. Somewhere along the lines I mentioned that I didn't think it matters who starts our success depends on the talent around the QB and if they step up and help.
This girl just blew up and started screaming at me about how Anderson sucks and Brady is the best QB we've had in the last 20 years! I didn't know what to do, this chick was seriously bi-polar.

I think this is very smart ploy, making the Vikes prepare for both QB's...the other half dozen teams with QB battles REALLY dropped the ball by naming their starter 3 weeks before the season. Now teams can prepare for them, and thus they have no chance to really win their first game.
By not telling the QB's you keep the locker room "peaceful" and both guys "hungry", that way the locker room isn't caught up in "who's the leader" and the direction for the season.
They really don't need "reps" with the first stringers, after all its just practice, how important can it be, especially for a QB?
The genius in Mangenius is showing, it must be smart, because nobody else does this kinda stuff!

Quinn didn't beat DA out convincingly? I guess maybe in EM's mind, but on the field, in the game, Quinn beat DA, soundly. I'm sure DA puts on a show during practice, but in 2009, during games...it was pretty clear who the QB is.
Which is why this whole ordeal is a total joke, and if its true that he hasn't told the QB's who the guy is, then we are in serious trouble, cuz thats flat out stupid.

BrownsFanZ,
Oh, I agree, I am sick of the whole debate, Mangini needs to end this whole charade. I think the offense is way more fluid with Quinn at the helm. Things just don't flow smoothly with DA behind center. JMHO
Hopefully, I get to see BQ behind center this year. If it's DA it will be a long, long season.

I find it interesting how you just explained that...tactfully. The ESPN boards are flame after flame just completing trashing the Browns.
I expect that Quinn will be our starter. I'm not convinced he's the answer and/or he'll perform any better than DA. I don't like either of the guys, so whatever. I'm just ready for the season to start!
I'm interested to see how Mendenhall will do, I was a huge homer of his during the draft. I also have the Steeler defense in my fantasy league

Comedy relief...
A guy took his girlfriend to her first football game. They had great seats right behind their team's bench. After the game, he asked her how she liked the experience.
"Oh, I really liked it", she replied, "especially the tight pants and all the big muscles, but I just cannot understand why they were killing each other over 25 cents."
Dumbfounded, her date asked, "What do you mean?"
"Well, they flipped a coin, one team got it and then for the rest of the game all they kept screaming was: 'Get the quarterback! Get the quarterback!' I'm like.... Hellooooo? It's only 25 cents!!!"
However much an advantage we get by making the Vikes prepare for the unknown QB is that much an advantage we don't have otherwise.
And yes they do... other coaches do that same thing. Usually it's when their starter goes down and the backup is expected to start the next game but he coach will not declare either to be the starter yet. Gametime decision they'll call it depending on how the injured QB is feeling come gametime. That makes the opposing defensive game plan take extra time to prepare for both.
Even for a monster defensive player who gets injured the coach will put him on the injury list and won't tell a soul if they guy can play or not. Gametime decision they'll call it depending on how the injured player is feeling come gametime. That makes the opposing defensive game plan for that player even if he's not going to play.
In the NFL you take any small advantage you can get.
Coaches do this sort of thing all the time. In our case the advantage will be a small one vs. the Vikes since we're not that closely matched up. If we were it could be the difference between winning or losing the game. But this won't be that. We can still get embarrassed by a team as tough as them, QB puzzle or not. After the Vikes the mind game and the advantage that comes with it is gone.
As far a the advantage of our QB getting the majority of reps with the first team other than the heading into the opening game I'm afraid we'll have to wait until next year for that. It's the price we pay for not having a QB in place by now.
The only way to have given the starter two weeks of 1st team reps would have been to have named him right after the 3rd preseason game. We didn't do that. If we had the team would have had two weeks prep with the starter.
The starter and 1st team will have two weeks of reps together in time for the second game. Again, it's a bummer. But making an educated decision on our starting QB was the most important thing we needed to get done this camp. So it set us back a week.
A week, so what?
The talking heads have us winning only 2 to 4 games all season. How bad can being set back a week be?
Far too many are making far too big a deal out of this. Mangini is going for a small advantage because he can. Who the hell's to say Rex Ryan is right in naming Sanchez his QB earlier. Hell. for all we know he may already be regretting that decision and now it's too late to change his mind.

That reminds of when Tom Brady was on SNL and they did a sketch on avoiding sexual harasment in the workplace. Basically the sketch played out as Brady could say whatever he wanted and get away with it, while the other guy couldn't even ask for a stapler without catching charges. Their advice was:
1) Be atractive. 2) Be good looking. 3) Dont be unatractive.

This sounds kind of bad, but the only reason I would want to see Brady Quinn start would be so he can finally show everyone how bad he actually he is. This offense will be absolutely horrid if he is the quarterback. Say whatever you want, but the only shot that this offense has at putting up any points is with DA at quarterback. The Vikings, Ravens, Steelers are going to feast on Quinn.

HEHE....and are you saying your boy DA tore it up in preseason to prove he should be our starter? No correct me if I am wrong but didnt Quinn out play DA in each game of the preseason?
I seriously like DA, but not as our starter! I think he is a very solid back-up qb but he had his time as a starter and he FAILED!
Now its Quinn's turn to see what he can do....I Will support whoever Mangini announces as the starter...but my preferance is Brady Quinn...

DA is a complete bum. He hasn't had a good game since like Week 10 of 2007. I'm not sold on Quinn at all either, but with DA at the helm you're looking at another 4-6 win season no matter what.

Could you be any more biased?

That's right DD. Any advantage is something more than we have. I don't get it. A head coach should have winning the Super Bowl as his sole focus and looking for every advantage to achieve that. Pretty simple.
The media's job is to find something to talk about; and there is plenty to talk about when bashing a coach. The media is not looking at how to support the team to get a victory.
All-in-all, I'm quite happy that Mangini is keeping as much away from the public. After we see the team play a few games, then we can judge his performance. Geez, it's a good thing many of these people were not around Eisenhower in May 1944.

Not biased, just being a realist. Quinn is going to develop into just another one of Savage's bust draft selections. I hope Quinn starts so he can go up against legit defenses in the first 5 weeks. IMO he is going to be eaten alive by the likes of Minn, Pitt, and Baltimore. This is the problem with some Browns fans, they are so anxious for Brady Quinn to be the savior, that they can't see clearly what exactly is in front of them. I am not biased, those of you who hate on DA and are in love with Quinn just because he is "supposed to be the savior" are the ones that are biased. If it weren't for Opie trading up to get him, he would have fell to the second round easy. The Sporting News had him as a 3rd round talent. He failed time and time again at ND in big games in wins and losses and individual statistics. The guy is all fluff. I don't hate Brady Quinn, I hate the people that are already in love with him and ready to give him the job just because he is Brady Quinn.
DA is only 26, a little over a year older then Brady, and look what he has already accomplished. He has not come anywhere near his potential. Pro Bowl first year starting, bad year last year, but you cannot put last year on him. This is his 3rd full season starting. If he is going to be legit, this is his year to prove it. Everyone says "lets see what Brady can do, we don't know what we have." Well I don't think we know what we have in DA either, how about we give him a shot. He has actually earned it, and he deserves it.

Because DA has always been so successful against teams with a good defense...
Quinn may or may not be good against those teams, but we know DA will suck against those teams.
you had a good run Hank.

I dont' care about your opinion. It's yours so you can have it. I got mine. But this... Quote:

Can you link to that? It seems so easy just to type it or anything else you want.

One of the best defenses in the league isn't going to care if it's Anderson or Quinn. They are both pocket passers, just one has more mobility, it's not like they have to worry about D.A or B.Q vs. Micheal Vick. Mangini is really playing this all wrong.
Anderson got to the pro-bowl for 1 reason. Touchdowns, All his other numbers were pedestrain (or worse) by NFL standars. This was caused by other teams not knowing his tendancies, Now defenses know as long as they can stop the run with the front 7 and keep there safties back vs. the long stuff, they got him. How did Anderson really stack up statistically vs. other QB's in 2007? TD's #5 INT #4 that is tied with 4th MOST in the league 3 qbs had 20, he and romo had 19. completion percentage, #28 rating #17 . yds/att. #12 yards/game #12 total yards #9
The biggest problem with Anderson and why he will not be a good starter long term? Accuracy, carreer numbers, 54.6% in 927 attempts. This does not keep the chains moving and is absolutly NO help to the defense. For reference typically 60-61% is middle of the road for an NFL QB.
preseason numbers: DA 57% has he changed? I saw this after 07 and wanted him traded while the fire was hot, and since then he has done nothing but prove that he has improved into more than a guy that cought fire for a few games. All this isn't even going to go into the risk vs. reward of his interception ratio.
Ruining QB's since 1999.
