That does kind of suck.......i will be shocked if a really good player will hit the market this year.....almost every team should be okay to resign all their playmakers

"" any chance that we're seeing more of this because a.) We've got a bunch of cap space and b.) we need people pretty much everywhere. They are simply advertising themselves to the potential highest bidder and then tossing in the hometown connection as an added 'extra'. ""

Bingo! -
All these players that want to come home ----- brings a tear to your eye, LOL.
Don't think the Browns need these players that want to come home --- the ones that are on the downside of their careers, injury prone and probably know they're going to have a difficult time signing with other teams so they pull the "want to come home" line. Pfffttt, too funny.
Browns don't need anymore hometown boys - they simply need players with talent.

I agree. I couldn't care less where they are from as long as they are good. Being from the area doesn't make them any better.

Well yes of course but......what about guys like Braby who act like they dont want to be here. I will take a guy who wants to be here over a guy with that attitude. Attitude can elevate a viable player into a good one. Thats why the patriots get it done year after year and the many of the other team in the league with "talent" dont seem to be able to get it done.

I understand what your saying peen but it isnt that simple. I dont really think Doss would fit but it is refreshing to se guys wanting to come back. Lets hope that if anything Bentley & JJ started something that will become a big positive.

I wouldn't say it is a problem, but it may have given people a false impression, which I think they already have. Doss is going to be out of a job. He is going to be looking for a job. It would behoove him to try to tell the Cleveland media that he would like to play for the Browns. I imagine if a reporter from Buffalo interviewed him, he would say that he would love to play for the Bills. I imagine if a reporter from Miami interviewed him, he would say he would love being a Dolphin. LOL....get my drift?

I could be wrong about this (i've been wrong before) but I don't think Edwards problem is not wanting to be here, If this guy was drafted by any other team that struggled, I'm convinced he'd be the exact same person.

I think his problem is too much money, not enough common sense, He needs to think before he blurts out some of the stuff he says... Just a little common sense is all thats called for,,,, Oh,,,,and ya gotta catch the darn ball

Got to watch Doss play at Mckinley...Was outstanding...

But imo...his knee is going to be a factor...this team has had its share of injuries...

it`s hard enough to keep healthy guys game ready..let alone ones who are already hurting

i'm all for it... he's always been a vocal leader on the field, whether it be at ohio state or indianapolis...

he's an upgrade over russell or hamilton... having him and sean jones both out there would be nice...

remember, and i know the anti-ohio state people don't want to hear this, but he was one of the key ingredients on that ohio state championship team, and if he had left early, there's not guarantee that the buckeyes would have knocked off miami, or even michigan...

i would love to have him on this team, he'd be a good addition

adds good depth too, and maybe we'll get a hometown discount...

He wants to come home? Great.

Let's see how sincere he is... let Phil lowball him with an incentive-laden contract, while some other team just ponies up the money.

His next move will tell how sincere he really is.

If he takes the Browns contract, I'm an instant fan! More depth, more competition in camp, and- he's now a Browns player. If he takes the other contract, we'll all know that this was just 'chin music' from the start.

Sorry to sound so jaded, but it's a very rare thing to see a pro athlete NOT go for the biggest bux. SO rare, that it makes the news... sometimes, the lead story. Money talks, and BS walks.

I have no love OR hate for Michael Doss. No matter where he spent his childhood years, no matter where he went to college- he's still a pro player in the salary cap / free agent era.

Actions speak louder than words.

the browns are in a good position on it, because they don't "need" doss necassarily...

sure, we'd take him, but going into the season with jones and russell isn't like going into the season with our current offensive line...

i agree, let's see the browns offer him a contract that is incentive driven, with modest pay, and see if he truly wants to come back home...

Yeah I get your drift and I already knew that as I and PP had mentioned..I was repeating what he said AND HOW he said it..

I had started to go back and print the rest of his comments about if he doesn't resign with the Colts he wants to come here, which I thought was presumptious...but I WENT HOME from work and forgot about..then qwhen I saw your comment I thought whast up with that??
U notice I wasn't advocating or or rejecting him..

I trust Phil to make the talent determination as to whether or not Doss will be here.

But, it is nice to see players who WANT to be here for reasons other than money.

I don't care who wins us ballgames. If he is coachable and reasonably tagged; have a more than casual concern, injured and all. But if we platoon some quality or had him as backup & nickel, we could use more experience than we can depth. Deep green means deep hurt often. I want to have heart! (Saw that on The replacements!)
Use the Force, Phil! And may the Elf be with you! Go Browns!

I am willing to give the kids we have on the roster a chance. I think are free agent money can be better spent elsewhere.

I think Doss would be an upgrade over Poole...but then Poole is really a FS...Doss is definitely a SS. and no offense to Doss but Sean Jones played Pro Bowl caliber games last year. Doss isn't going to come here to sit. Now if Russell leaves us (which may be very likely)...the question is can Sean Jones play FS and allow Doss to play SS. We also have to ask "what does it mean for Brodney Poole"

Frankly our saftey situation is one of the few areas on our team that is actually loaded. We have Jones who would have been a Pro Bowl selection if playing on most any other team. We have Russell who gets our people in position(make no mistake....it did hurt us when he was not in there) even if his abilities after the snap are not stellar, they are at the very least adequate. And we have young talent in Poole and Hamilton and even Jereme Perry shows promise.

For Doss to be worth the money several things have to happen....
  • Russell leaves
  • Sean Jones has to make a seamless transition to FS
  • Doss has to be a adept at putting our people in position as Russell before him
  • Doss & Jones needs to be a legitimate improvement over Russell & Jones or Poole and Jones

Now Russell may leave...
Sean Jones probably could make a transition to FS
Doss could be a leader on Defense
but the last item is tough to call because Jones is playing SS in the examples that need to be improved upon....and we just don't know about Jones playing FS.

Personally I think it is a gamble to bring Mike here. i would love to have him...but it would take away money from other areas that have needs.

Someone mentioned Doss gaining weight...lets not forget Urlacher was a safety in College. So it is possible...not likely but possible...I doubt Doss makes this kind of move. For one it is a position change. Second he would have to move into another area that is kind of stacked.....ILB...Doss will never get big enough to play OLB in a 3-4 those are DE/LB tweeners...but he could gain enough to play ILB and then he would have to learn a new position and then beat out Andra, D'Qwell, Leon, Chaun, and Mason. So I don't think it is going to happen.

Not that what we have are the best around...but they do have potential and with a position change...it is not likely Doss jumps to the head of the class from the start.

If it aint broke.. don't fix it..

Sean Jones is the obvious SS.. He made so many hits this year it was ridiculous.. (ie Robert Gallery I think )

If they pick up Doss... My obvious move to make him fit in is to just move Poole to corner!! He has the height.. has the athleticism..

Next years starters could be Bodden and Poole with Minter and Holly as back-ups... then we wouldnt have to waste a draft pick on a CB, which i really don't want to do..

Doss will try out free-agent market
By TODD PORTER REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

Mike Doss has enjoyed his four-year career in Indianapolis. Now, the former McKinley High School and Ohio State All-American is ready to taste a different part of the league.

Doss and his agent, Tom Condon, informed the Super Bowl champion Colts that Doss would void the fifth year of his contract and become an unrestricted free agent. Indianapolis signed the second-round pick to a four-year contract with a fifth year that was voidable if Doss met certain incentives.

"I'm looking forward to this process," Doss said of becoming a free agent. "There's still a month left until things start to happen. It's kind of mixed emotions. The Colts gave me my first opportunity in the league, and I'll always be grateful for that. It was an opportunity to play with those guys and build relationships over the years."

Doss played in six games this past season before tearing a ligament in his knee in October. Indianapolis placed him on injured reserve.

He traveled to Miami with the team and was on the sideline during Super XLI. Doss also took part in a parade Monday through downtown Indianapolis.

"You have to understand this is a business, and business is business," Doss said. "You move on in life, and sometimes for the better, and I believe this will be for the best."

Doss said he anticipated being a salary-cap casualty during the offseason.

He will become one of the top-five unrestricted free-agent safeties on the market. Jacksonville's Deon Grant, Seattle's Ken Hanlin and restricted free-agent Gibril Wilson are others.

Rookie contracts typically are for the base minimum given a player's experience. Many players are able to set themselves up for a financial windfall with their second contract.

I'd pass on Doss for two main reasons:

1. We don't need him (I don't think he's better than the guys we already have).

2. He's injury-prone. The guy has missed significant time in two of his four seasons in the league.

No thanks.
