Where is the proof he will be productive again?
Well, generally, proof comes with production---and production comes with PT. So logically, you can't have proof without first giving the opportunities.
He has done well with opportunities before, and so its not hard for me to "hope" that he gets more opportunities to supply you with the "proof" you need.
Simple enough, isn't it.
There's also just as much proof he won't be effective too. And that proof is a lot more recent.

Correction...There is one QB that is scared and still makes mistakes and is highly ineffective..see 5 TO and 10 sacks and the other who came in down 20 or 27 and felt the need to try to put this team on his back and do something. So do you want a wuss at QB who still turns the ball over or someone who can actually move the ball.
Well spun.

I am actually somewhat excited after this drubbing for the sole fact that Mangini put DA back in the game. We need to put him back at the helm for next week. If we do, I seriously believe that the game will actually be watchable. Always waiting for next week.

If BQ would have forced throws down the field and been picked off he likely would have been yanked anyway.... You absolutely positively can't play the QB position if you are constantly playing in fear for you job... Heck DA might light it up against the Bengals, but soon enough, he'll have a couple stinkers back to back, the boo birds will start, the fans will start calling in the shows, the camera will start spotting BQ on the sidelines when he throws an INT... and he'll get tentative.. He's done it before too.

I don't think anyones trying to spin anything. It looks to me like it's a legit point that DA came in down 27-0 and came in swinging. Yes he made some bad decisions in a desperate effort to score quick but he very well may have done things differently if the score was manageable.
You keep saying things like "well spun" and trying to discount DA but I'm yet to see you back anything up.
Here's the facts:
Browns 2007: 9-5 With Derek Anderson and yes he had impressive stats.
Browns 2008: 3-5 With Derek Anderson and gets hurt his first game relieving Quinn after he was injured for the year. Anderson may not have been magnificient in his 8 games last year but he wasn't terrible.
2007: I'm pretty sure that season spoke for itself
2008: 142-283; 50.2%; 1,615; 9 td; 8 int; 14 Sacks Don't try to dicount the extreme amount of injuries going into last year and the awesome amount of dropped balls that contribute to that 50.2%.
So in 8 full games that's not impressive but it's not horrid to where he should have been pulled in favor of Quinn. Anderson had a successful '07 and never got to follow it up without having to look over his shoulder for no good reason.
Don't forget he was yanked off a practice squad in 2006. Was awesome in 2007. was DECENT in 2008 regardless of how it is twisted. The numbers are there. People expect Peyton Manning after 1.5 years off the practice squad!!!!!! His short comings can be corrected while his arm strength can't be taught. No his 8 games into his sophomore season doesn't disprove that he is a legit NFL Starting QB. For those with selective memory, yes he did have some clutch games in the 4th quarter of 2007. The only reason we all remember the last Bengals game is because we forgot about Dawson missing the game winning field goal against the Raiders where no other than DA drove the team to be in position to win that game.
Quinn, I'm sorry he was a 1st round pick and made 0 progress. At least Anderson moved the team in his first 3 games of his career. Don't give the more talent or better OL bull crap either cause it's not true. Quinn would make the Redskins Hogs of the 80's look bad with his skittishnesh.
DA needs to be handed the job and continue to develop. I say this cause the Browns need to draft defense, rb, and wr. I do not want to see another dang 1st round pick spent on a fricken QB. Lets face it if we draft another QB and he doesn't have an arm like Manning, scramble like Vick, and brains like Kosar all in one person then 90% of this message board will act like he straight sucks if he's not winning after week 2. Even if he does win people will complain that he has a uni brow or something.

Thank you. I'm tired of the musical QB. It reminds me of a guy who has a faithful girlfriend who cooks and cleans but is like 5'8" 150 lbs and he's mad and insults her cause she's not 125 lbs. So instead of working with her and concentrating on other aspects of the relationship and buying a house he leaves her. She goes and finds a good guy who exercises with her and invests time in her and she is now a 125 lb bombshell with all the other intgangibles.
DA is our 150 lb girlfriend. He just needs some TLC!! Then we can concentrate on the rest of the team and have a shot at a bright future.

i agree. excellent post. the only mistake i noticed was where you said waiver (practice squad p/u) in 06. it was actually in 05. he was drafted by the rats in the 6th, and they tried to sneak him onto their ps. phil, who i believe had no knowledge whatsoever about taking a qb, but knew how to "sell" a draft pick, plucked him bc he knew the rats system and players they had been targeting.
i still think that da could develop into more, but the fans won't give him a chance. in the end brady quinn is a better sell, and became this savior billed as the next coming by many. it was more about the hype.

If you watched the rest of the team you would also notice that they actually started running and playing hard when he came in too. I don't know why, but they did.
I'm going to break a long-time rule of mine and reply to one of your posts...
The reason for that which you noticed and question was the QB switch increased their sense of urgency.
Pulling a QB mid-game is a monumental move. It points the finger at the entire team that they are in fail mode. The spark that happens is the players on both sides of the ball wake up and renew their sense of urgency. It's one big reason why a QB switch to the backup often seems to work. But it doesn't begin and end with the play of the QB or mean that the team likes the backup better. It's a response to the wake up call.
The renewed sense of urgency increases their momentum.
Unfortunately that didn't last long once the turnovers took the momentum out of them.

Of course DA came in guns a blazing. We were down by 27. What else did you expect? The rest of your comment is purely speculation.
The question was...Do you want a wuss for a QB, or one that moves the ball. Please tell me that is not spinning a question to get the answer you want?
In '07 DA was up and down all season. His rating was still "only" 82.5. Yes he had nice stats at the end. But in crunch time he still didn't do a very good job.
In '08 he was terrible. His rating was 66.5. Yes there were dropped passes. Yes there were injuries. I'm not discounting any of that. You can't discount the missed receivers either. To say his performance wasn't terrible. Your kidding yourself. Go look at the game by game stats. They are horrible.
1st off, in that Raider game, DA threw 2 picks in the 1st half that lead to a 16-0 lead for the Raiders. Yeah he lead them back on the last drive to have a chance to win. But had he managed the game better in the 1st place, it wouldn't have come down to that last drive. Cribbs also had a return for a TD too. And BTW. The FG was blocked after the 1st attempt, which he made, was nullified by that stupid rule that allows teams to call a TO right before the snap. Just sayin.
Why is this argument that at least DA moved the ball, or put points up, in his 1st few games have anything to do with anything? So freakin' what. Are we now grading QB's on their 1st few games? If that's the case, a lot of good QB's would not be in the league right now. That is the weakest argument yet.
I don't know what to say about your Redskins comment. Other than that's the stupiest thing I've ever read.
"if we draft another QB and he doesn't have an arm like Manning, scramble like Vick, and brains like Kosar all in one person then 90% of this message board will act like he straight sucks if he's not winning after week 2."
Kinda like what you guys are doing with Quinn. After 3 weeks he's totally gonna suck forever.

Nothing at this point. But that doesn't mean that things can't change. It's not about who is the better option. It's about seeing if Quinn can play. I'm just saying that all the breaks that you guys want to give to DA, should be given to Quinn also, if you want to be fair about things. You guys are ready to write Quinn off after 3 bad games. How is that fair?
We are in a full scale rebuild mode. Again. That's the sad truth. This season has to be sacrificed, as far as winning and losing goes, to see what players are worth anything. We all knew this going in. I don't understand why the results so far are so shocking.

DA shows more promise than Quinn.
Quinn would have to actually convert third downs, and move the team for me to even give him another game---he doesn't do these things.
DA does do these things.
That is why he is the better option.
Quinn was supposed to be ready to.................................
you know what. I am not going over this again.
DA is the better option.
Quinn is worse than I could ever imagine.
If you think for a minute that BQ deserves another snap then good for you, I guess.

Definitely a tough decision. But let's face it, this team is not going anywhere this year no matter who's taking the snaps - way too many holes on the roster & coaching staff. DA may win us a game or 2 this year, but so what. I think the Browns need to grin & bear BQ for at least half the season. Let's see what he can do (or can't do) over an extended period of time & put this painful issue to rest one way or the other.

Its no wonder this team sucks. we have draft a highly rated qb give him 6 games and determine hes a piece of crap. This team is just terrible right now it doesnt matter who plays qb get used to it. It honestly makes me sick to hear some people say we need throw in the towel on BQ. I would hate playing for this team. If you dont perform like Tom Brady from day one people call for your head. Yeah it sucks that he isnt playing very well right now but with this team come on.. Why not let the guy get comfortable and actually have a chance. oh wait i forgot its the Cleveland Browns that wont happen.. what a joke.

Actually they were already writing him off in the 1st quarter of the first game of the season... and has steadily got worse as the Browns have been steadily playing worse... Then Quinn gets benched and DA comes in and throws as many INTs that Quinn has for 2 1/2 games in 1/2 a game.. And of course, DA supporters will use their excuses.. "we were down by a lot".. but what big play possibilities are there if you keep turning the ball over? DA simply is not going to help this team neither is Quinn... until DA learns to be smarter on when to throw the ball... and when Quinn learns to release the ball to his playmakers.

It goes all the way back to the 1st game of '99. Ty Detmer was signed to groom Couch. Couch was not supposed to play unless there was an injury. But it took all of about a few bad plays and the crowd was chanting for Couch to come in and play. They got their wish, and his very 1st pass was picked off. That pretty much set the tone on his whole career. It wasn't very long after that, the fans turned on him, and was chanting for Holcomb.
Now 10 years later it's the same old story with the fans. Nothing has changed but the players. Fans turned on DA, chanting for Quinn, and now the fans are turning on Quinn.
Those who do not learn from past failures, are doomed to repeat them.

I don't care who starts, this team will continue to lose. Mangini is not the problem. QB is not the problem. The problem is EVERYBODY. With the exception of maybe 10 players the WHOLE organization should be purged including the FO.
Today I put away all my Browns things... I will wait till the return of the REAL Cleveland Browns to show my support. The imposters posing as the Browns today do not deserve the support of the fans. The whole organization is a farce and legitimate laughing stock of the league. They should be... they've EARNED it.
Sure, we'll trade BQ who will go on to be a solid QB for someone else, after they undo the mindf*dge he's been handed here. BE, DA and several others will join him. We'll probably fire a coordinator but keep EM and company for 2 more years... get a few more High draft picks so we can rob them of their futures as well....
When you find cancer you either cut it all out or die from it. Well, we're circling the drain. Bandaids won't fix this mess. We need a transplant, a transfusion, several things ending in 'omy', platic surgury, physical rehab and a REALLY good shrink.
I've had a lot of low points as a Browns fan but I can't remember anything lower than this except when Modell stole the team. I just want to see a team that is worth the energy, money and time I devote to it as a fan. The current product falls well short of that minor expectation.

Always waiting for next week.
Based on the article I just read, Mangini, continuing his recent string of idiotic and unexplainable decisions regarding the QB's, didn't tell Anderson he was starting the second half.....................until he was already back out on the field.
There's needing to be ready at any moment to go in, but I can't EVER remember a QB being told he's starting the second half after the teams had already returned to the sideline.
That would have the same effect as being told on 3rd-and-long without a moments warning that they are benching the starter, and you have to go in with the play on the tip of your tongue.
That's a recipe for...........well...........for 3 INT's
Regarding starting Anderson or not...........I can't say I have much faith in the guy, but I do know without a shadow of a doubt that Quinn isn't ready for this. He needs to sit down, watch some film, take some notes, breath, and decompress. I've seen QB's play like in the past, and the players are always just one bad play by the QB away from shutting it down for the day.
As much as I doubted Quinn, I'm now *this* close to saying he's gotta sit for the rest of the year.
There's a difference between being the 0-3 Browns and a team like, say, the 0-3 Dolphins. We need a win........Hell........some offensive movement just to get the blood flowing again. We can't afford to have Quinn go back out there, laying the kinds of eggs he's been tossin' around.
I'm of the opinion that it's time to let Anderson go out there even if he throws 5 int's, if for no other reason to let Quinn try and learn something by watching his broken self on film. He clearly isn't going to learn anything right now, as he has no idea what he's looking at out there.
I'm not done on Quinn, but my God, I haven't seen a starter play this bad since Detmer was here...........
***Gordon, I really didn't think you could be this stOOpid, but you exceeded my expectations. Wussy. Manziel, see Josh Gordon. Dumbass.***

I agree...relief pitchers get some time to mentally prepare.
At any rate, I think he may have been protecting Quinn by doing what he did.
It was at the point we had to take shots downfield to have any chance and he knew Balt was going to tee off and become ball hawks in the backfield.
Why have your young qb either get picked off and hammered or continue to look foolish throwing 2 yard passes when you need 15 yard passes.
I think Quinn is back in next week.
Putting DA in was like bringing in a relief pitcher...the starter wasn't getting it done and the game was about to get ugly.
Might as well bring in the guy with the bigger arm and give it a shot.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn. GM Strong

You guys are ready to write Quinn off after 3 bad games. How is that fair?
Because that was the worst 3 game stretch of Browns qb'ing I've ever seen. And I've been a fan since the late 60's. And trust me, we've had some bad ones.

What U think is really inmaterial..because if you really think DA is the answer , you're fooling yourself , which by all your posts going back several seasons..isn't hard.. We have a sorry situation at QB right now,..but the thing is the plug shouldn't be pulled on BQ yet..I saw exactly what I knew I'd seen in DA..low football IQ..he may have a better feel of the offense than Quinn right now because of experience but that ain't saying too much.. he's going to keep making those dumb mistakes like he always has..

What about Quinn are you so confident about?
Why is he a better option at this point?
Personally I'm not all that confident in anything about this team any more.. nothing, zilch, nada.
What I do know is that DA came in with nothing to lose and he played like it. We were on the road so he wasn't going to get booed for throwing 3 awful picks, the game was already over so it didn't matter.
If he starts next week I'll root for him to do well.. but I can all but guarantee you that if the Browns struggle early, maybe he throws a pick or two... the booing starts... it will be the same result.
DA is a very streaky QB.. if he gets on early, we have a chance to compete, if not, it will be more of the same.
Honestly I don't know what's wrong with BQ... He's always been more of a ball control passer, I agree with that... but in all of his preseason games, in his games last year, any time I've ever seen him... I've never seen him this gun shy and look this rattled.. so I can't really answer your question.

Thats a point I brought up in the locked threads..he didn't look confused/hesitant when he played last year or preseason..something isn't clicking or something is holding him back..himself..what it is I don't know..

The reason I used the example of what Anderson did after the first few games is to show that he progressed. Quinn has showed nothing at all. He has not progressed. He is terrible and doesn't even show a glimmer of hope. If you think he has hope then please enlighten me. I told you why Anderson should continue to start. If Quinn showed me anything then I would agree to keep starting him. What's this obsession with Quinn that some people seem to have? People sit there and want him to as our QB just because he's Brady Quinn. It's stupid. So what if Derek Anderson isn't some pretty boy who is going to make commercials.

What U just said about people wanting Quinn because he's Brady is stupid.. He was a first round pick..U have to see what he has before U make a decision on him..three games is not enough for a guy getting the full start for the first time..this ain't about marketing or ticket sales..it's about a seemingly NFL QB who's supposed to possess the skills needed to be a successful QB..

Honestly, I want him to get more time to see if he can work his way out of whatever funk he is in... I want to see a bit more, not because "he's Brady Quinn".. but because DA is DA. I don't dislike DA, I try not to say bad things about DA to prove my point... but my opinion is that DA is always going to be a Jake Plummer style, very inconsistent gun slinger and that is not what this team needs for long term success...
As we sit here today, on the rock that is ROCK BOTTOM... I fully understand that DA might bring some immediate excitement to this team by forcing throws downfield.. he might score a couple TDs and he might even win us a game or two....
In my mind, none of that fixes our long term problem... I have much less confidence today than I had 3 weeks ago that BQ could, in fact, fix that long term problem... but I'm willing to give him more than 2 1/2 games to figure it out.

If Marc Bulger is released by the Rams this offseason, we have to get him.
Why?
Cuz Bulger currently sucks on a team with no WR's and no line.
But unlike anyone on this team, he has a history of greatness. I doubt he forgot how to read a defense. He's still an accurate QB. Been one of my favorites ever since he took over for Warner.
Depends who hits the open market, but IMO he's the one most likely to hit the market, come to another team and turn the ship around.

Starting DA isnt gonna change a thing, there just isnt enough talent around our QB to make them look average.
We need to play Quinn to see if he has anything, than we will know if we need to draft another QB and over pay them also.
