"Sarcasm folks...I just don't get why the "old" Matt Roth thread had to be closed"
I don't know...maybe I posted something in agreement with you on it?
The world would have ceased to rotate on its axis.
Good pick up btw.
I wonder if he's the SILB that we are searching for to compliment DQ - in everything that I've read he's tremendous against the run...that SILB is the perfect 2 down position on our Defense.
He was made available primarily due to going in the doghouse for missing Training camp on a groin injury he claimed he still had and the team Drs. gave him the OK on.
Don't know too much else about him except that I loved his prospects coming into the draft in 05.
High Upside...No Risk also they waived him cause they knew they weren't going to sign him. Probably didn't want the risk of Locker Room cancer as they look like they aren't heading to a Playoff run of any kind.

That was a good one....Veikune will never even sniff Roth...and Roth isn't any good to begin with
Interesting you think Roth "isn't any good" while NFL.com's scouting report of another guy (I believe) you were high on, Connor Barwin, compares Barwin to ... guess who?

Newly acquired Browns LB Matt Roth says he had falling out in Miami THE ASSOCIATED PRESS 51 minutes ago * Buzz up! 0 * Print BEREA, Ohio - New Cleveland Browns linebacker Matt Roth(notes) is happy to be out of Miami after what he termed a falling out with the Dolphins. Roth was claimed off waivers by the Browns this week after totalling 158 tackles and 12 1/2 sacks in five seasons in Miami. He started a career-high 14 games last season, three years after the Dolphins selected him in the second round of the draft. Roth says the Dolphins questioned whether he was really hurt after he missed all of training camp with a groin injury. "I've got five more weeks and then I'm a free agent," Roth said. "It's one of those things where the writing was on the wall. Neither party was happy, so it's best to go our separate ways." web page Not looking like he will want to be here after 5 weeks either.

I bet after he found out he'd just become a Brown, he repeated this mantra to himself over and over as a means to cope.

Dosnt sound like he wants to stay here with comments like that.....we need to see what he has to offer and then decide if we try to keep him around or let him walk...

Tubby, I thought he was referring to his situation in Miami when he said he only had so many weeks to go until free agency....

I agree he was, still the guy can't be very thrilled about being sent to a cellar dweller.

Agreed but a middle of the road player on a sub par team can become a standout. Still, you gotta check out FA wwhen you get the chance.

He only has a few weeks to show the league what he's got before FA. He's going to a team that really needs linebackers. Hmmm... It's a good match for him. If he just gets a few sacks he'll be a standout on the Browns.

While some players may be motivated by playing for a winner ... the NFL is primarily a JOB. These guys go where the money is ...... a preferred region of the country is second ..... family concerns are third .... and winning is somewhere around fourth.
If this guy were any good, he'd go to the highest bidder. There might be certain teams/cities/coaches that he would eliminate right off the bat .... but money is the single biggest motivator for these guys.
Look at how many players "Love their team/cirty" ....... but must be the highest paid player at their position or they're taking offers. Even cornerstone "franchise" guys do it ..... and the lower players ,,,,,, down to the bums ,,,,,, follow suit.

I think most of us would follow the money as well ... whether they want to admit it or not.
LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

Let's try and not put words in his mouth.. these players have a habit of doing just fine with foot in mouth issues on thier own.....

One of the few bright spots and will flourish here...ASSuming that Ryan stays and we play this same Defense.
of course Roth's contract runs out after the seasons end...we got to sign him among some others - beginning with DQ.
If you think about it - remember when Ryan and Mangini first came here. They talked about the OLB being stronger and bigger - especially the SOLB one would think so....but I also remember Ryan stating that Wimbley and Hall have to get bigger.
Well Roth is like the perfect guy for their defensive scheme.
He doesn't have much else but a Bull Rush...but a very good one at that. It keeps the QB in the pocket and should give the WOLB plenty of sack opportunities also anything up the middle....cause if the QB steps up...Roth appears very adapt on throwing away the blocker and converge.
I loved the way he played the Run and was able to control the outside and prevent the RBs from running up the C-Gap. Wimbley didn't have a good day with that...it seemed like wherever Wimbley was (he switched sides sometimes) they would run his way and have the C Gap all day...not to Roth's side and that was the strong side with the additional TE blocker.
Hope we keep him...I know it was one game but its obvious this kid has talent and thats something this team needs!

Both of those guys will probably be restricted free agents.

4th n 5th seasons respectively...RFA only if there is no CBA made.
So could very well be...but got a feeling they are going to get that done in the off season??? Who knows.

Granted we have a large amount of injuries at the linebacker position. Roth went from being in the doghouse at Miami to starting with the Browns after only two days of practice. I'd say he's probably grateful for the opportunity at the least. But who knows? I can't speak for him. I know if it were me, both teams aren't going to the playoffs, I would want the frest start and the opportunity to play and at least showcase what I can do. He wasn't gonna get any decent contract next offseason sitting on Miami's bench.
I also agree with eotab, I believe a new CBA deal will be reached over the offseason. Which should make our first priority following VP, GM, and coach, re-signing DQ. We cannot let DQ walk.
Just my two cents.

If he wants stupid big $$$ we had darn well better let him walk. He is not that good in our 3-4 and if we switch to a 4-3, he would be unproven.
Not to mention he is coming off an injury that is not a "good injury" for an undersized LB.
We haven't missed a beat without him...we STILL can't stop the run and the middle is STILL wide open at all times.
He's the best we've got but he IS replaceable...and that was before the injury. All that said and I like the guy.
I would NOT trade or let walk:
Thomas Rogers Pontbriand
I would not give a huge contract to anyone except:
Thomas Rogers
I would "upgrade" the contract of:
Cribbs
Everyone else is up for grabs

I've said it before and I'll say it again.
D'Qwell Jackson is a top 10 linebacker. He just isn't recognized as that because the people around him have been/are crappy.
Re-signing D'Qwell Jackson should be a top priority in the off-season.
Now if there is no CBA then we don't have to worry about him hitting free agency for another year.

You are saying that there are only (9) LBers in the league who are better than him? I don't see it...could be.
I think he is painfully too small for the 3-4 and cannot get away from a G once the G engages.
Top 10? Meh.
