I'm looking through some of the past articles, but couldn't find anything. They also didn't mention it today or yesterday.

I'm thinking someone mentioned it on here. Dunno.

Either way, I think the consensus is he's pretty durable with how much he had the ball in his hands (specifically, rushing). He won't have to do that in the NFL.

Edit: Plus, he's put on some weight.

There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

Really good value selection by the Browns. McCoy is very highly thought of by a lot of the experts who study these kids week after week. He'll have plenty of time to learn the offense and get acclimated to the pro game. Also, he'll have Jake to mentor him along and a very good offensive line to work behind when his time comes.

It's a win-win for the player and the team. Welcome to Cleveland Colt.

Let's just keep Mangini and any other coaches that do not know the QB position away from him....

NRTU

I've watched Colt for four years now and have mixed emotions. He's a very hard working, all-around good kid who really hasn't had much talent around him. He's not the tallest, but he's still 6'1, doesn't have a great arm, but has very good arm-strength, and is mobile. He was the leading rusher for UT and was able to make plays. For a late third rounder, it's an excellent pick. He could be our starter in a year or two, or could be a back-up for years. Either way it'd be a good pick IMO.

I think it was a gamble to wait because he has the potential to be a solid QB, but it was worth the wait. Best part is he can come into Cleveland and sit behind two very experienced QBs. Lots of time to learn. He won't be rushed like our previous QBs we've drafted.

I can't agree with you on the arm strength. That is my biggest concern with him.

I don't think it's great but I've seen him make some nice long throws... but again, that's not against NFL DBs.

We'll see... I think it's a good pick and like I said if he's not the Franchise QB it's not horrible since he was our third rounder.

Arm strength isn't about long throws. It's about squeezing the ball into a small hole.

I'm not at all against the pick, but I definitely don't love it.

Brian Sipe had a noodle arm and he slung it pretty well in that wind tunnel called municiple stadium!

well.. Colt better get to work....

1) People will say if he doesnt beat out Delhomme/ Wallace he must suck

2) People will say he doesn't throw the ball down the field

3) He has about 6-8 games to prove himself after he gets his shot

McCoy.. Just do you!! WIN!

There's a big difference between the NFL back then and now. Players are faster and the holes are smaller in today's game.

I should probably stop criticizing the new golden boy. Soon there will be a mob ripping me to shreds.

Quinn sucked. Get over it. Anyone expecting McCoy to come in and beat out Delhomme/Wallace should have their head checked. H/H/M will not allow themselves to play musical QB's.

Exactly, McCoy will hold a clip board all year. Delhome will start and if he get's injured Wallace will start.

Right on guy!

Us old dudes know that. Kosar didn't have any trouble either.

As i have posted MANY times......ARM STRENGTH IS WAY OVERRATED!

Accuracy , leadership and work eithic all go in front of a strong arm.

To be fair, it was pretty much just me saying I hate the guy and he was a waste of a pick.

I still think it was a waste and would have made more sense to take a WR.

I have been watching Colt since he was a Jr. in High School we coached against him when he was at Jim Ned (picked off his first two passes!) and I want all of you to know that he will be the easiest person to root far that we have ever had. The kid will come in her with a chip on his shoulder and work his tail off. He is crazy accurate and a great leader. His arm strength is not that great, but he can fit it in any window his accuracy is nuts.....can't be described. I have personally seen practices where the ball never hit the ground.....vs. live competition. I really tried to stay out of the Colt talk to dodge the homer label, I really thought that he was a 3rd round guy and if the talking heads would leave it alone he would fall.....well he fell and he is a great value in the 3rd. Wally must have stones to wait his guy out until the third.....and I loved how the talking heads were calling for the pick @38, then again when we traded back into the 2nd...Wally let his guy fall and that takes stones.

BTW he is not Chuck Frye....really not even close to the same make-up.

It seems like the arm strength would be much easier to improve on than leadership and accuracy.

the easiest way to view this is to say colt is everything people falsely heaped onto quinn. he'll be hard working, be a strong leader, and be accurate on the short stuff. his arm should be enough to get the job done on intermediate and long.

hotbyoungturk - the talking heads may have compared him to montana but that's only because HOLMGREN did it first.

I'll be happy for him to just be Colt McCoy! Screw any comparison! Do what you did in college, be your own man and with a bit of luck things should fall into place!

We can ill afford to screw up another QB!

i'm not expecting "franchise qb" from colt. i just want a consistent qb who is accurate. if he's better than that, great. all i was pointing out is our "qb guru" is the one who first compared colt to montana after some incredulous responses.

However, I just don't like McCoy as a franchise QB. JMHO and my opinion only.

Who said he is the FRANCHISE QB..... who told you that.., what person in authority told you he was the FRANCHISE QB..

He was picked in the 3rd round.. He was a guy that, for better or worse, was talked about in the 2nd round and some thought 1st round..

We got him in the third round.. in fact, lower than we picked Frye..

If he makes it,, COOL,, if not, it was a 3rd pick That's it, nothing more.. Certainly NOT THE END OF THE WORLD...

I view this as we really can't lose on the deal... if he succeeds,, wow,, if not, it's not a big deal...

It is a big deal.. It means a few things:

1) We are drafting at the top of the draft AGAIN

2) We are not winning

3) No Playoffs.. No Superbowl..

4) We have to continue to look for that guy who can finally succeed in cleveland.

the thing that makes the QB position unique is that there is no platooning, there is no rotation, there is no shuffling.. you draft a QB for one of two reasons..

1. You think he can be a franchise QB

or

2. You think he'll be a good back-up because you already have a franchise QB.

I seriously doubt we drafted Colt McCoy for reason #2... now the investment, by taking him in the third, might be less than a round 1 QB.. but make no mistake, he was drafted in hopes that he will be the franchise QB.

sorry, i find that very dated. you can draft a qb to have a starter plain and simple. he doesn't need to be a "franchise" guy and no one called him one.

okay.. so you give him a chance to start at some point to be the QB of your franchise...

I guess some of you equate franchise QB = Hall of Famer = Super Bowl Champion = Pro Bowler

Good point, let's define "Franchise QB"... doesn't have to be Manning or Favre or Montana.. I would define it as a guy that solidifies the position for the long term and a guy you think you can win a SB with.. if you don't think you can win the SB with him, why keep him as the starter?

True! What DC is saying though is when you take a qb and you expect him to be a starter....the intention is in hopes that he can be a long time starter which in turn becomes a hopfull franchise guy.

The definition of "franchise" could be what is getting you.

Not trying to get in the middle, just making one post and one post only on this guy I've watched about every Saturday for four years.

Regarding arm-strength:

McCoy doesn't have a big arm. In terms of the average arm of the average starting NFL QB, he has a below-average arm. The argument against that is you don't have to have a strong arm to play in the NFL, you just have to be accurate. Kosar and Sipe are the examples used to show weaker arms can throw in bad-weather places like Cleveland.

But there's a problem with those examples.

No, players don't have to have strong arms, but they DO have to throw tight spirals. Kosar and Sipe did that. McCoy throws a BUNCH of wobblers, and those get eaten up by bad weather.

You don't have to have a strong arm, but you do have to throw tight spirals. That's the only reason Pennington survived in the Northeast. So keep that in mind. If he's able to learn to throw tight spirals, his weaker arm won't mean much. If he can't, he'll never be a viable starter and the pick will have poor value.

On that note, if he doesn't becoming a valuable starter or at LEAST a guy that plays many quality games as a sub or backup, the pick has poor value. Teams expect 3rd rounders to develop into starters. If Colt doesn't do anything more than carry a clipboard, it's a poor pick.

He has all the intangibles a team wants. He's going to be well-liked by players, fans, and media alike. He has excellent mobility and will be able to make plays with his feet better than Quinn and Frye did. Those same feet will allow him the ability to find passing lanes behind bigger linemen. He's smart and will continue to get better because he has a natural mind for the game of football. He's the kind of kid that every coach wants to work with. He does have an accurate arm, but with a limited range.

Unfortunately, his slide to the 3rd round happened because teams viewed the film (but what about his pro-day workouts?!?! ) and saw what we've always known: He throws a wobbly ball and has a pedestrian arm. It's stronger than Frye's but not by much. He'll be affected by the weather and some of his passes won't be close to the mark because he doesn't throw a tight ball with a bunch of rev's to keep it tight. At 6'1, 215 he doesn't have the size to take a bunch of hits in the NFL, and he'll have to work to find passing lanes because he can't see over NFL linemen. His accuracy is elite on the short stuff but will suffer when trying to make NFL throws. This means a limited play-book that's going to make it tougher to move the ball with him in the game.

I'm ok with the selection as long as we aren't planning on McCoy becoming the starter in a few years. He simply doesn't have enough NFL-quality tools to dump all our eggs into his basket as the future starter. If he wows everyone in practice and camp and takes the job, great, but to plan on it would be a huge risk, simply because if we're banking on him, we're not making efforts to find someone else.

He's a better prospect than Frye was for a 3rd rounder but sadly isn't as good a prospect as Quinn. I'm not going to spend the next two years bangin' on him the way I did on Frye or on Quinn, but that won't mean I'm happy if he's slated to be THE next QB of the Browns. He has smarts, leadership, and toughness that Quinn never had, and because of that he stands a chance of overcoming his lack of tools. It just isn't that great of a chance.

By the way, for those that don't think Holmgren will be involved with his QB's, my advice is short and simple:

Don't bet on that.

***Gordon, I really didn't think you could be this stOOpid, but you exceeded my expectations. Wussy.
Manziel, see Josh Gordon. Dumbass.***
