God, I knew the McCoy homerism would be flying high after looking at his inflatd stats....but here's the bottom line:
It's not the stats nearly as much as other things:
throws a good accurate ball, seems to play with composure,. especially considering the circumstances of today's game... as Ammo said "he passed the eyeball test".
Yeah it was only one game but I was encouraged by his play today.

One other point I forgot to make.
7. Arm strength. Other than a deep out it didn't really seem like there was a throw he couldn't make.
But the deep out is a pretty important throw. It looks like the Browns have really been working on his mechanics. His arm is stronger than it was at Texas, but it still isn't good. However, we haven't seen enough of him to make any real judgments there. He wasn't forced to make many challenging throws today as far as arm strength goes, so we'll see.
A word of caution: Today was one game. While Colt showed many good signs, it is much too early to say he's a legitimate quarterback. Even Quinn had a decent game or two.
I echo this sentiment.
But it's hard not to get excited. There's a lot that can be said for not being shell shocked against the Steeler D. Especially looking at what p*ttsburgh has done to other QB's this year.

So let me get this straight ...you think that by Colt not playing there's going to be a better chance we'll draft another guy? I'm thinking by him playing we can better determine whether we need to draft a guy. If he's on the bench he's going to be a great unknown and I think we'll get more of the "he could be the guy sentiment". But maybe following your logic we can put Wallace back in and he'll play just good enough that the front office and the fans will be convinced he just needed a chance to start somewhere and he could be the guy.

I'm not inclined to have Colt start the rest of the season. He really needs to "take" the job from Wallace. And frankly I'm not too sure he will. We don't see Colt everyday like they do. So we don't know where in his development he is.
There's no use throwing him to the wolves with a depleted offense either.
This year's draft should bring in a couple of guys who will help impact the game. Along with hopefully a FA or two.
With Hillis and Moore we have the "reliable" guys... now we need to get a Playmaker.

I know you think you're smarter than everyone else but don't twist my words, take them out of context, and try to label them as "rosy". The message I've made is pretty clear. I was impressed with the young man today and think we should continue to see what we have in him.
I really don't see what sitting on the bench does for him or the team based on what he was able to show today considering the circumstances.
I am interested in the long-term at this point. I don't see much upside in worrying about the short-term.
No, I don't think I'm smarter, but there are some things that I think are short-sighted and foolish... and your notion that we just abandon this season for a single player is pretty high on that list.
Answer me this: True or False: If Colt cannot outright TAKE the job from Wallace and Delhomme, does that not tell you what you need to know come Draft day?
Hey, if he continues to EARN the position, I'm all for him being in it.... but to give it to him after a single outing? I think that is the definition of foolish.

Colt will either shut people up next week or make the voices grow louder.
Here's to hoping there are more of us next week.
As for Django: Just for once, notice a positive and don't try to twist it into a negative.

My biggest fear came true in this game....fans, who want to believe in a better future no matter what looking at stats and thinking McCoy deserves 1 or 2 more years of "development" delaying finally drafting a true franchise QB in the Top 10...those homers will only boost MH's ego and decision to pull rank...this could be a disaster...Colt "The Hobbit" McCoy is NOT our future, please don't got there...well he could be "tried out" because he "didn't look soooo bad" but then our future will look more like the same...didn't we say and do the same things and waste time after Frye and Quinn games? Can we ever learn? Please?
Why is it that you always have to be so negative?
Stats weren't what I was looking at. What I saw was a guy who showed good poise, made good decisions, and threw some very accurate passes.
There are plenty of QBs that don't have a great deep ball that either developed a better one or still found a way to become good. Drew Brees and Chad Pennington come to my mind.
This team's best receivers are Evan Moore and Ben Watson (may be Peyton Hillis if you want to give it to him). The best WR on this team is Chancey Stuckey.
And he played a pretty good game against the Steelers, one of the best defenses in football. If our running game was better, we would have scored more points.
I just don't see how you just write this guy off..... Today he was much more accurate than I can ever remember Quinn or Frye being.
Personally, I'm fine with Seneca "The Tallest" Wallace being our starting QB next year if need be. But I'm definitely excited about watching "The Real" McCoy next week.
I just don't see how you watch our rookie QB play this week, he does very well (you seem to be looking at one stat, points, when there's much more to an offense than just him), and you say, throw the towel in: don't watch him again this year, draft a "top 10" qb next year

Quinn's first start:
23-35 (65.7%) 239 Yards - 2 TD's - 0 INT's - QBRAT: 104.3 vs Denver Broncos - 0 Sacks
Frye's first start:
13-20 (65.0%) 226 Yards - 2 TD's - 0 INT's - QBRAT: 136.7 vs Jacksonville Jaguars - 5 Sacks
McCoy's first start:
23-33 (69.7%) 281 Yards - 1 TD - 2 INT's - QBRAT: 80.5 vs Pittsburgh Steelers - 5 Sacks
This is why I haven't jumped on the McCoy bandwagon, all though he had a great 1st start and I'd like to see if he can continue that performance! Hopefully he is our future QB.

How is he supposed to earn the position when he's not getting the reps when the other guys are healthy AND there is a conscious decision to redshirt him this year? That implies he's not going to get that opportunity.
Turns out circumstances had him playing. The opportunity happened out of necessity. But it's happened. We have an excuse to play him now.
And since you like True and False:
True or False: Delhomme and/or Wallace are the long-term answer at QB.
True or False: QB is the single biggest reason for our lacknof success since the return.

The stat line isn't terrible, and given the competition, the Rating is actually pretty good.... but it is the part where the stage didn't look too big for him, his accuracy and poise that makes him seem promising.
He looked the part today, he needs to continue to do it and take the starting role.
Height means squat... Drew Brees does fine. Draft slot means squat... Tom Brady has done ok, and TOOK the job following an injury to the starter.
McCoy is the only reason that McCoy can't put his name alongside those guys.... either he will show that he is ready, or he won't. My bet is that if he does well against New Orleans, he will have an opportunity to keep Delhomme and Wallace in "Rehabbing Mode" coming out of the Bye.

It takes atleast 20 games or so for a Qb to really "get it" so to speak...actually believe it or not..Colt is "farther along" then many would have expected (I am sure this is thanks to Holmgren)
You have to develop colt...you have to let him play...the last thing this team needs to do is draft a QB in the first rd.
Since we have Heckert making the picks this is what we need to do. The picks of Haden and Ward look like winners? right?
Our D Front 7 is terrible...beleive it or not a lack of a pass rush eventually killed us and allowed the Steelers to torch our secondary (Wright has some blame in that as well) but you gotta have a pass rush.
If we have a Top 10 pick...this is the year we need to "Trade out" If we can and get a few more picks...with those picks We need to use them on our Front 7..We Need 2 DE, an OLB, and an ILB (Maybe 2 if Jackson leaves or we add a FA)
If we had a pass rush today...we may have made this a much closer game and maybe even had a win....our D is just...that...its not overwhelming..we lack talent hardcore on the Front 7....when teams are coverting 3rd and 13..you got a problem with your Front 7..No qB is going to fix that.
We need an injection of "young good talent" on our Front 7 like we got in our secondary...if we can add 2 Good DL and 2 good LB...we can move forward with McCoy and be a much much much better team....we cna be one of those teams that keeps teams from scoring on us and we can grind out games...
Taking a QB in the 1st will be a big mistake...if we do you cna look forward to another losing season next year..Matt Ryan had a D down in Atlanta....Brookings, Abraham, etc...we don't have that....
We need to stockpile picks and fix this D Front 7..Heckert needs to finish the job he started (Fixing the Defense) once we do that...we shoudl know by then If Colt is the guy or not, and if not then we draft somebody
in the meantime, add another RB, a WR and maybe a RG and RT and let Colt develop....I really think fixing our D Front 7 will go a long way in making this team respectable again...allowing us to really be able to do something...
you see the Raven's D over there? emulate them..they are the cog in the wheels that make that Baltimore machine roll...flacco is just a beneficary of it...Same with Ben...
Until we fix this D we will not win games consistently...our secondary gets hung out to dry with these guys...we need Front 7 help more then anything...trading down, gewtting extra picks and injecting young talent there will do ALOT for this team...

It's no coincidence the best teams have great QBs.
It's no coincidence the most successful coaches have hitched their wagons to great QBs.
He's just trying to be smart. I'm sure the answers will range from poor re-entry into league, too many coaching or front office changes, or poor drafts.

Exactly. Quite frankly I'm kind of tired of the "We need to build a solid foundation and just have a QB manage the game" logic.
We need a QB who elevates the play of those around him. Period. I saw signs today that Colt McCoy may be that guy. I'm just not trying to get too far ahead of myself.
He didn't play a warm weather team in the cold (Frye) or a horrible defense that left dinks and dunks open because they gameplanned for Derek Anderson (Quinn). I see signs. Don't want to give the kid the keys to the car permanently yet, but my God he showed enough for me to want to see him get another test drive.
The Steelers threw the kitchen sink at him and he largely did not flinch. That's HUGE to me.

I just think back to what Charlie Frye looked like against a Steeler defense after he'd gotten a season of experience in the league. McCoy today, 6 games in and with his first playing time in rookie season, like like the complete opposite of that today. Poised, confident in himself, able to move to avoid taking hits (maybe the part that impressed me most), able to make the throws he needed to make. I'm sure he'll start next week since I can't imagine Jake or Seneca will be ready to go. If he puts up a good showing, I'd have no problem with getting another look at him after the bye.

Honestly, what game where you guys watching? We had 0 scoring drives when the game was still a game....Hillis rushed 12 times and McCoy dropped back to throw over 40 times....the Offense was all pass and we had 0 scoring drives...
poise? what poise? he had 1 read and then took off...the OL did a great job protecting him for the most part...he had tons of time often...he hit some wide open targets mostly thanks to grat 4+ sec protection AND in vanilla time...big deal....he did little that impressed me when the game was on...which part of "we didn't move the ball and didn't come close to scoring" don't you guys get? That's the game I saw....
just because it could have been worse (probably your expectations were McCoy getting killed, who knows) doesn't make perfromance better or worse....it is what it is....no scoring drives and 2 INTs..I already said it'S not telling either way because of the setup...I just don't see the excitement....what did he do? Lots of backfoot throws and 1-read plays = he never went or had to go through progressions (I suppose this was by design.. mybe .weakness?)

He has had a pre-season and 6 games to red shirt. If Wallace or Delhomme are still not 100% I think we have to go with Colt and if he can put together two games and shows promise, then yes by all means keep him out there. It would be a luxury for us come draft time next April knowing one way or the other what we have at the QB position. We have many other needs like WR, DE, CB, SS, ILB, RT etc..... I liked his Savvy and his body language looked like he was having fun doing what he loves to do out there. He looks like he belongs in this league weather that is as a long term starter or a back up would be nice to know. Next Sunday is no easier test for Colt if he indeed starts next week. What better way to find out what this young gun slinger has in his holster

I think you are the one with the skewed expectations. Did you expect a perfect performance? You're just pissed because of the reason you already stated. You already made up your mind that you don't like McCoy and you somehow think the fans are going to stroke Holmgren's ego to the point that he keeps him instead of drafting someone. Ok.

No, I expected points...you know those little things you need to win games or at least be in a game....we didn't score any. If your expectations are that low put me in I would have managed the same 0 points and maybe even avoided the 2 picks by just kneeling, because that would have been the same McCoy and the O produced...Nada, that is

Nice try and that's BS...I gave a performance assessment....you disagree? Fine, then tell me what there was to like or dispute my claims if you honestly can..don't resort to the "Django is buh-buh" rhetoric homers grasp at when they run out of arguments, you're way better than that

I started the thread with the reasons. I don't need to restate them.
Why don't you READ and COMPREHEND?
I didn't expect many points against a great D with rookie starter in his first game.
I mainly wanted to see how Colt performed.
He didn't put up many points, but I liked a lot of what I saw.
Are you saying it's not possible to like any of what I saw because we didn't score a lot of points?
That's short-sighted.
Here's a novel thought. Maybe the first time you do something you really aren't that great at it but you're not totally lost either.
Suppose you get more opportunities. You might get better at it.
I don't know what you do for a living but I hope the next time you start a new job you get judged the same way you judge under the same intense microscope you use on every one else.

I don't want him starting until he is ready in the eyes of the coaching staff. I think he looked very good today. I also think he has more to learn and after watching QBs try and learn on the job I am all for the take it slow approach.
what if he comes out and has a bad outing? Do you bench him then? What about a couple in a row? I don't want to see him take over too soon only to get benched.

IF Colt continues to impress and IF he gets to the point where the argument can be made that he gives us the best chance to win, THEN the conversation should be had.
If he cannot TAKE the job, then your questions come Draft time are already answered, aren't they?
Wait.. so Colt comes out and plays pretty well against the #5 total defense in the NFL on one weeks preparation on the road.. then IF the following week he doesn't play so well against the #6 total defense, the defending champions, also on the road.. then we know all we need to know going into the draft? Really?
Prpl, for me it comes down to a simple question and in the 4th quarter I asked this question of the guys at the bar and got no response.. "What could Seneca Wallace have done today that Colt McCoy didn't do?" And the answer is a resounding NOTHING... if Colt doesn't play well against the Saints then give him 2 weeks to prepare for the Patriots, then the Jets.. that's one hell of a gauntlet to have to run as your first 4 games in the NFL... based on what I saw today, he'll be fine. I fully expect a klunker in the near future as teams get some tape on him and learn to prepare for him.. then we will see if he can adjust.. that's how this works.

What's the worst that could happen...we are already 1-4 with Jake and Seneca. At least with Colt starting we would figure out if we need to do something drastic like trade for Kolb or draft a QB in the top 5.
We aren't making the playoffs...all we are playing for is draft positioning.

Good spin, but that is not what I said. The two thought lines were mutually exclusive.
If he looks like crap in New Orleans, then you have to wonder if he's actually ready... there would be only two games of him with two different performances, one decent, one bad... which is the aberration?
The coaches see him daily, they will know.
As a separate line of though: If the coaches feel that a healthy Delhomme or Wallace is the better option to get us a Win, then Colt hasn't taken the job from them... so why should he get it if he hasn't earned it? THAT's how this works.
Browns is the Browns

I wonder why people always think they have to baby a QB into the league, that they are mentally fragile and need protected. This would be true if our offencive line sucked like it did a coulpe years ago. But if the protection is there to prevent the QB from getting killed, Play them! If they crack under the pressure . . . they werent tough enough anyway. most first year starting QB's throw picks, get them out of the way now and see if we need to draft a QB in the first round this off-season. CM got thrown to the wolves today, and he got beat up a bit, and kept fighting, on the other hand i thought the fact that he was getting his rushing yars and then sliding to protect himself was smart in a way most rookies aren't, knowing that the beatring you will take by not sliding isn't worth a 3rd and 4 vs a 3rd and 6. The defensive comnpetition isn't going to get any harder than today, in my opinion take it week to week, but more showings like this = Colt could be in Cleveland a while. I am surprised no one pointed out that one of the few games quinn did well in was against the lions
Ruining QB's since 1999.

No, I expected points...you know those little things you need to win games or at least be in a game....we didn't score any. If your expectations are that low put me in I would have managed the same 0 points and maybe even avoided the 2 picks by just kneeling, because that would have been the same McCoy and the O produced...Nada, that is
Pittsburg has held MUCH better offenses to less than 1 touchdown in a game . . an you expected points? Sorry bro, you are delusional. -Atlanta had 3 fieldgoals -Tenn didn't score thier TD till 1 min left in the game. -Tampa didnt get thiers till 6 min. left in the game. -Baltimore didn't get thier 2nd (and winning) TD till under a minute left in the game, we were bound to feel the steelers wrath after that lose. I was hoping that CM would just make it out alive and less than 4 picks, he did alot more than that.
you expected points? against the #1 scoring defense in the NFL . . . C'Mon! http://espn.go.com/nfl/statistics/team/_/stat/total/sort/totalPointsPerGame/position/defense

No Cribbs, no MoMass, no Robiskie, (well, he was there but...)
He had TE's Watson and Moore with Stuckey as the only WR along with an injured running game. And the point you pound is lack of scoring?!
C'mon man. The kid did well like they sometimes do when there's no film on them. If he had some receivers and a running game they may have moved the chains much better. We were, as you said, one-dimensional. But that was by default. And the dimension he was operating in is severely lacking in even average players.
He did good. He showed real good accuracy on most throws. He wasn't throwing ropes but he was throwing accurate. I think he did a fine job of what they asked him to do. Simplified? Sure. What did you expect? One of the main points going into this game was the need to set him up in a position to succeed in the face of that defense.
We didn't win or even score competitively. But in the end it wasn't a total embarrassment whereas the coming week could be full of laughable highlights on his account. That's a bit of success right there because that is what it could have been.
I liked his accuracy and the fact he looked in charge. Two good points.
Now get off your high horse and anoint him saviour or you're just buh-buh.

Some posters seriously bad-mouthed Hillis when he came aboard, some going to the extreme that we didn't even need to consider him because he wouldn't make the roster. Many bad-mouthed McCoy unmercifully from the beginning. Those people aren't giving up!
McCoy looked good -- really good -- today and his detractors can't handle it. They are trying to save face by "helping him learn about the NFL game" -- by carrying a clipboard for the rest of the year. You guys who are trying to hide Colt and hope everyone forgets about him had better get used to a different way of looking at things.
Colt McCoy proved himself TODAY and proved to be better than Wallace and Delhomme. He has EARNED the right to finish the season as THE qb. Quit your b******g about Colt and start tearing down some other promising player -- hopefully someone who plays on another team.

I wouldn't say Colt proved he is better...he took a step towards proving he can be pretty good.
I did like his accuracy, and he showed poise.
His numbers are a bit inflated as the Steelers were playing pretty soft near the end.
But overall,I wouldn't mind him starting next week against the Saints which gives both Jake and Seneca 2 weeks to heal...then at the bye week make some sort of decision.
At any rate, I am seeing the Browns improve even if we aren't winning games. I see a plan that looks like it is going to pay off. I hope we stay the course.
At this point my hope is Heckert gets busy and looks to trade Rogers for a pick and this probably won't go over very well, but I would look to ship Cribbs. He is at the top of his value IMO and in the grand scheme, I don't see him helping us win all that many more games....I would look to get a pick for him.
To the right teams, I think we could get a 2nd for each.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn. GM Strong

For the record....I really don't care if we start Wallace or McCoy from here on out....I think we have a much better chance of winning with Wallace and whoever asked what could have gone better with Wallace....maybe a more competitive game? People here don't realize that in the "real" game McCoy had 0 points and 2 INTs and 5 sacks behind a pretty good working OL....your point is exactly what I'm up against: it's not "good" when the assessment is "well, he didn't embarrass himself"....it is what it is and that's "meh"
Play him, rush the next QB, do whatever you please (whatever happened to "let him sit he full year" anyway?)...the problem is: the Hobbit can competely ... the bed and his homers will be here asking for another year "since there were good signs"....THAT'S what I'm up against, I just don't want this guy to stand in the way of drafting a QB in the Top 5 next April
and I really don't see most of the "positives" posted on here....did you really see a "poised" QB? I really didn't, he took off pretty soon, he was 1read and go style and he waited ages back there....the OL really did a marvelous job to protect him but they can't do this every week....on an AVG OL day, guy gets sacked 8+ times and not only 5, which is high enough
the TD drive really is meaningless, the FG was all on Haden's INT...we didn't even come close to scoring for 3.5 Qtrs...I'm really baffled at what you guys saw. Over 120yds of McCoy came with 3 scores up in the last 5 min, coincidence? I saw a rookie QB throw for 150yd, 2 INTs, get sacked 5 times and no scoring drives when the game was on...can we please stop making the same mistakes again and again? Draft a real QB in the 1st, develop McCoy as a backup, which I am sure he's best suited for....what's the problem with that? He was passed over by numerous teams needing a QB over 3 times, that's not coincidence, that's consensus (and before anyone brings up Brady: he was a part time CFB starter and NOT the QB with the most wins)

Cool, and then let's draft Veikune or Robo or Massa or do you prefer Ncutt, S.Jones, C.Thompson? E.Wright and Dqwell is the best we did over the years in he 2nd round....seriuosly, what's wrong with you guys? Rogers maybe but why in the world Cribbs, who just re-signed? We need playmakers and you want to get rid of our only one? Cribbs will be much more effective once we get some more playmakers...yeah, let's trade him...that already worked so well with BE and KW

if Colt doesn't play well against the Saints then give him 2 weeks to prepare for the Patriots, then the Jets.. that's one hell of a gauntlet to have to run as your first 4 games in the NFL... based on what I saw today, he'll be fine. I fully expect a klunker in the near future as teams get some tape on him and learn to prepare for him.. then we will see if he can adjust.. that's how this works.
/\ /\ /\ That's it right there.
Colt played great in this game(all things considered). I'm sure he feels that way, the coaching staff and his team mates feel that way as well. That's taking a BIG positive out of a loss, this is the kinda thing that keeps a 1-5 team motivated, and to me, the most important thing to be gained from this season is to keep showing signs of continuous improvement. Colt's gonna get another chance next week, but like we need to curb some enthusiasm on what he showed yesterday we'll need to give him the opportunity to have a real stinker as well.
I don't know if Colt will start the rest of the season but he played well enough yesterday to start again next week.
