I know Jauron runs a 4-3. But what kind of 4-3?

I'm hoping it's more of the Jim Johnson/Spags 4-3 than the conservative 4-3.

from what i remember from his Buffalo days...it was press coverage from the corners, but it relied on pressure from the front 4 and the LBs were kinda rogue.

they would mix it up between blitzing and covering...but often not much pressure. That being said...in Buffalo the LBs and front four have been awful...but he was a conservative head coach

I would think that Brad Seely would be a slam dunk to stay. I think that it would really get the Shurmur administration off to a good start if he keeps one of the very best special teams coaches in the business. (Assuming Seely wants to stay)

Carl Smith is another really respected coach who might get a look as far as staying. He did a marvelous job getting 3 different QBs ready to play last year, including a 3rd round rookie who wasn't expected to play at all.

Brian Cox is another guy who might get a look. I don't think that his chances of staying are as high as Seely (I would put him around 90% staying) or Smith, (probably a 50/50) but he's probably got the highest chance of staying out of anyone on the defensive side of the ball. Look at how well he did coaching Rubin up. He also turned spare parts into modestly successful DEs, and had a very effective run stopping line until Smith got hurt. After that, his line was still decent against the run.

I thought that the loss of Fujita hurt us more in the run defense than the loss of Smith, and I would have considered Smith our most important key against the run prior to the year.

One thing that concerns me with Jauron coming in is that he prefers the Tampa 2 .... and that uses smaller, faster defenders. 2 problems I see .... we don't have those guys anywhere in our front 7 ...... and we play in a division with big backs and big O-Lines, who will run the ball down the throats of a smaller defense. His defense in Buffalo, in his final year (and I don't remember exactly when he was fired) gave up 222 rushing yards in game 3, 250 in game 4, 171 in game 5, and 318 in game 6! Ouch! That's being beaten over the head with a 2X4. Again, this wasn't Jauron's 1st year in Buffalo .... this was his 4th.

That worries me greatly. I worry about how the Tampa 2 will play in the AFC North. Maybe they'll come up with some modified version?

Further, Jauron was the DC for the Jaguars from their inception through the 1998 season.

He did a respectable, and in many ways, and amazing job with his troops there. He got them to the middle of the pack in yards allowed and points allowed.

However, the year after he left, they led the league in points allowed. They went from middle of the pack under Jauron to 1st in the entire NFL.

His time as Lions' DC was nondescript. They were a lower defense before, during, and after his time there.

Hopefully he has learned some thigns about defending big, powerful rushing attacks, or we're going to see numbers put up against us that make Jamel Lewis look like Ben Gay.

I'm thinking he has picked up a few different things along the way.

He has coached under Mike Holmgren, Tom Coughlin, Steve Mariucci, and Andy Reid. All come from Holmgren's "coaching tree" besides Coughlin.

I will say this about Shurmur

this is the ONE TIME Holmgren needs to follow the "Tomlin Model" and NOT let Shurmur pick his staff....

Yes the Rooney's hired Tomlin in the conditions that Arians, Lebeau and other staff members stayed put....in essence Tomlin DID NOT have free reign to hire his staff...

it is very important that Shurmur do well here....Holmgren has everything at stake on this....Holmgren should be the one to pick his coordinators...this will just ensure Shurmur's success here much like Tomlin until Shurmur is no longer wet behind the ears...he needs strong coordinators.

Defensive Coordinator - Ray Rhodes. He has HC experience, he has ran an aggressive 4-3 in Philly, GB, and Seattle...he will help Pat, and he worked under Holmgren for years.

Offensive Coordinator - Jim Zorn. He is another WCO experienced guy Holmgren is comfortable with...he has HC experience and we would weaken a divisional rival. Zorn is a good play caller.

Special Teams Coach - Brad Seally. Keep him he has tons of expereince and has done a great job.

We need to get this right...I don't think or trust Shurmur to hire his own staff..he is another Mike Tomlin...he needs hos coordinators "picked for him" to set him up for success...just like the Rooney's did with Tomlin....we need to surround Shurmur with experienced "Holmgren guys" for the 1st 4 years so he can really get a solid grasp on HC, and he can learn a lot from Zorn and Rhodes which will be important in the coming years..

i think it will be a big mistake if Holmgren don't interject himself and pick Shurmur's staff....the Rooney's did it with Tomlin to ensure success...Shurmur like Tomlin when he was hired is too wet behind the ear to makes these hires...we need sound expereinced men...Ray Rhodes and Jim Zorn would do a lot for Shurmur...let Shurmur hire his WR and position coaches to learn under Zorn and Rhodes...but we need to have Holmgren step in here and bring in 2 solid coordinators.

right now...for our WCO dirtection....Jim Zorn and Ray Rhodes are the two best guys out there and they understand Holmgren's vision....

Jim Donovan said last night on the news that Shurmur is planning on being his own OC... Not sure how he could know that yet, but I don't like that idea..

Rhodes was demoted by Holmgren from defensive coordinator to defensive assistant in 2005. I highly doubt Holmgren brings him in as a coordinator again.

Jim Zorn had never called plays before the Washington Redskins and the offense was nothing to write home about. There's a reason he couldn't find a coordinator job after being fired by Washington.

Drennen just said before the press conference that The Surmurnator is going to be calling his own plays and making the gameplan. And that their looking at Juron for DC...

I would check your guesses against a list of Bob Lamontes clients. Holmgren didn't cast a wide net for his coaching search. He selected one of Bob's clients. I hope I am wrong and the Browns actually pick the best candidates but I have a feeling Bob will be the agent for all.

I find this line of thinking assinine.

Homgren is an intelligent , experienced man, who was given the reigns of an NFL team. Yet people still believe that his agent is pulling the strings

Do you actually think that Holmgren rose to the status he has in the league using nepotism, and stroking his agents ego?

IMO Lamonte must be one hell of an agent, because if you look at his clients, he seems to have the best available.

To me using this "agent" conspiracy is hilarious and smacks of conspiracy agendas. I guess Holmgren would only draft Lamonte represented players.

What a joke this whole "agent" crap is. I guess some people always believe there is a conspiracy in everything .

I tell you what, I really didn't want to believe it myself, but if they hire Mike freakin McCoy to be the offensive coordinator (another Bob client) I think there might be something to what LeCharles has been saying. Holmgren and this guy go way back to Oak Grove Highschool where Lamonte encouraged Homgren to take an NFL position and then ended up negotiating a deal for him that made him one of the highest paid coaches at the time. Lamonte believed that coaches in general were underpaid and started a mission to mainly represent coaches and get them the money they deserved. You don't think Holmgren has an agenda, but I am just saying that he might. I don't know. It just didn't appear to me that he cast a wide coaching search after interviewing just one other coach besides the one he hired (unless you count the Rooney Rule interview). Good read (start at page 17 if your eyes are tired) from LaMonte himself:

correlation doesn't mean causation.

1. Are Lamonte clients being hired because they are Lamonte clients?
2. Or are these guys Lamonte clients in the first place because they are guys Holmgren knows and trusts and so is Lamonte (so he referred them to Lamonte in the first place).

Those insinuating the agent is running the show are ridiculous. Holmgren is going with guys off his tree because he knows who to trust. Sometimes, I might feel skeptical of this method. However, due to the Holmgren's trees vast reach in the NFL (especially since Heckert likely is helping with the Reid portion which Shurmur is from), I feel more confident this is the correct method.

He knows people who won't BS him on people's skills or knows those people's skills himself. He will go get people he knows can get the job done and doesn't have to rely on guessing. Yeah, Shurmur is a leap of faith as he hasn't been HC before (and I prefer if he has an experienced OC to work with as well). But, the model that is being followed seems solid.

I think that having a lot of guys who are from the same coaching philosophy is fine. I do worry that no one will have a different opinion about anything ...... and I do mean that seriously. I worry that everyone in the room will look at a coach, player, or play and see exactly the same thing every single time. I think that a little friction here or there is healthy.

I still have major concerns about Shurmur. I hoped to come out of this press conference reassured about the pick, but I am not. The best I can think of is that Holmgren has "his" guy ... hit 1st head coach hire .... and he wants him to be successful, so he'll do whatever he can to help/make him successful. Holmgren was joking about the line to the field so he could call plays ..... but I do get the feeling that he would do that if that's what it took for Shurmur to be successful. That level of commitment from both Holmgren and Heckert is, by far, the biggest positive I take from this. Shurmur alone is an "eh:". I feel like both Holmgren and Heckert will be far more committed to Shurmur, and to doing whatever it takes to make him successful, than they were with Mangini.

valid concerns. i hope shurmur isn't afraid to tell Holmgren he is wrong when he thinks he is wrong. that is important.

at least we shouldn't have to worry about the Phil / Romeo problem of FO and HC not being on the same page.

Yeah.

I know that Mangini and Holmgren were never going to work. I had hopes that they would, but as time went by it became apparent that Holmgren was never going to be comfortable with a guy who plays defense to win games.

Whether last year was a matter of Holmgren giving Mangini a year to see if they could co-exist, or whether last year was Holmgren knowing that no head coach worth a damn would even look at the team as it was, going into the schedule it had, I can't say.

I do think that we should see much better results from a FO and coaching staff that are all 100% on the same page as far as what we should see on the field. Heckert should have a great feel for the types of players that fit, and those players should have no problem finding the field with Shurmur in charge. Holmgren should be able to help out at either level as needed.

I sure hope this one works ......

did you see the presser that introduced Shumur to the press at 11am this morning.

Holmgren addressed this very issue. According to Holmgren, he didn't even know that Shumur was a Lamonte client until after he was identified as a candidate.

So, unless Holmgren flat out lied, there is absolutly nothing to this nonsense...

This from Adam Schefter's ESPN.com chat

Quote:

Russ (Ft Lauderdale, FL)

What did you think of the Fox hire for Denver? Does he keep McCoy as OC, or reach out to Fassel, seems like that combo (in reverse) worked well with the Giants...

Adam Schefter

Russ: He'd like to keep McCoy, but everything I hear is that McCoy could be Cleveland bound. If he leaves, then Denver will have a critical hire to make on the offensive side of the football. Fassel would make sense, but Denver never called him during its head coaching search, so I'm not sure if it would start now.

Quote:

Jamie (Pelham,TN)

Now that Cleveland has it coach in Pat Shurmur. Are you getting any information about who the frontrunners are for Offensive Coordinator and Defensive Coordinator positions?

Adam Schefter

Watch Mike McCoy for offensive coordinator, Jamie, and defensive coordinator is something the team is sifting through now. Maybe Dick Jauron, maybe Dave Wannstedt, maybe someone else. Browns still deciding.

I know some aren't as enamored with Ryan, but I think the best move would be to keep him.

He's got upside as a coach. He likes to be aggressive and creative on defense. The more talent we get, the more effective this approach becomes. Don't give up on him because he doesn't have the horses.

We keep some continuity. Defense (and special teams) are really the only spots where we would actually want some continuity (in terms of coaching, at least). The continuity argument doesn't work for a lot of aspects of the organization, but I think it does for defensive coaching.

3-4 (continuity). I like this scheme. Just because we haven't been able to draft worth a damn until a year ago, doesn't mean we have to give up on it.

And the rebuild begins. I really didn't want Manigini to go, but I understand why he was fired. But the way Shurmur sounds, he's doing a complete rebuild. He's going to bring in his staff, his players, his philosophies, so its a rebuild.

double digit losses next year. New scheme on both side of the ball. I'm so sick of losing.

Mangini instilled toughness, discipine, and fundamentals. Let's see if we lose it.

I think there is a 3-headed monster in this one, and not just Shurmur. The GM, President, and new Head Coach are all use to a certain style of play on both sides of the ball.

Each one now knows for sure that their counterpart is interested in the same scheme's and ideas. As far as our roster, most of the change will only influence the defensive front 7. We need help at WR, but besides drafting one high, I don't see us long MoMass, Robo, Cribbs, or even Stuckey sadly anytime soon.

how much of a rebuild will the defense really get? Robaire, Ahtyba, and Shaun Rogers will be the DTs and good ones...Rogers can go back to freelancing like he likes to do while Ahtyba can hold point v the run.

our DEs...we can install Jayme Mitchell, and a guy like Roth though he will leave for FA (too bad we dont have veikune?) or someone can be a serviceable DE or we sign/draft one.

Fujita, Gocong and Benard can be our OLBs and DQ can be our MLB...Trusnik can be retained...its not a rebuild...just a retooling

Anyone who thought, even for a second, that this wasn't going to be a rebuild was grossly fooling themselves.

Simple logic: If Coach == Fired, Rebuild = true;

It may not hold true in other cities, but in all cities with weak rosters - especially Cleveland - it is as good as Law.

Rogers and Robaire?
God help us please.
Mitchells,Roth,ugh!
With that lineup, this new coach won't last the season. At least our pass defense won't be bad,no one will have to throw.
Fujita,Rubin and maybe this Bernard kid, that's it.The switch to a 43 will be long, ugly and needless.

well look at the starters on the DL as

Draft Pick, Rubin, Rogers, Mitchell/Roth/Robinson/Coleman...clearly not elite, but if you make a reasonable pickup like a guy like Aaron Kampman was for Jax we would be very decent in the front 4.

Rogers' best days were as a 4-3 DT that could rush the passer and wasnt supposed to be a 2 gap place holder. he can get out and make things happen.

Rubin and Rogers could be our Williams and Williams...

David Bowens has also been a DE.

what im saying, is that we have a lot of options at LB and DL...while none are very attractive (although i think Fujita, DQ, Gocong will be very solid) we have bodies and we will add more during the offseason

Don't know if he has been mentioned but I would like to see Knapp Hired as OC

Greg Knapp- Currently with the Houston Texans as the QB coach, Has coordinator experience, 15 years coaching experience with QB's. Has worked with Matt Schaub, Mike Vick, Steve Young and Jeff Garcia to name a few and over-all has helped 9 QB's into the pro-bowl. Probably pretty familiar with the WCO from his time in San Fran. And I believe the Falcons ran it when he was the coordinator.

IMO that would be a solid hire.

As for D-coordinator I have no clue, but I don't like the pip-squeek Jauron.

I was thinking someone like Kevin Greene current linebacker coach for Green Bay but better known for histime spent in Pittsburgh. Guy has done wonders with the linebackers up there and has a ton of experience in the 3-4 so we wouldn't have to change schemes. Don't know how well he would be since he actually hasn't been a coach long but he had to have picked up something from his time in Pittsburgh with Cowher.

Didn't see this posted anywhere. I think Ryan would do well down in Dallas.

IRVING, Texas -- The Dallas Cowboys are working on a deal to make Rob Ryan the team's new defensive coordinator, according to a source.

Ryan interviewed with Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett and owner/general manager Jerry Jones on Friday. While Ryan still has a year left on his deal in Cleveland, the Browns will go in a different direction under new coach Pat Shurmur.

Ryan, the twin brother of New York Jets had coach Rex Ryan, has spent the past two seasons as Cleveland's defensive coordinator after a five-year stint with the Oakland Raiders. He won two Super Bowl rings in New England as the Patriots' linebackers coach. His father, Buddy, was a longtime NFL coach and irked many Cowboys fans during his time in Philadelphia.

Cleveland had the 22nd-ranked defense in 2010, allowing 350.1 yards per game, and it was tied for 13th with 20.8 points allowed per game. The Cowboys allowed 351.8 yards and 27.3 points per game in 2010. While not tremendous numbers, the Browns defense improved nine spots in yards in 2010 and had a spike in turnovers with 19 interceptions and nine fumble recoveries.

The Cowboys are committed to the 3-4 defense, and Ryan is the third coordinator Garrett interviewed who has experience in that system. However, San Diego scooped up Greg Manusky, and San Francisco is reportedly set to keep Vic Fangio with new head coach Jim Harbaugh. Paul Pasqualoni, who closed the season as the Cowboys' coordinator, is now the head coach at UConn.

If Ryan joins the fold, the Cowboys could have him coach another position or let him serve as coordinator only. They also need a defensive line coach with Pasqualoni's departure. Dallas recently denied Houston's request to talk to linebackers coach Reggie Herring but could allow that in the future.

well look at the starters on the DL as

In a defense that places importance on speed and tackling above all else, we would be dead last in rush defense. Someone else said that no one would have to throw .... and they're right. That defense would get gashed left, right, center, and even a day early.

Greene did play in Pittsburgh under Cowher, but he didn't spend any time with Cowher as a coach. Greene spent the 2008 training camp with the Steelers and Mike Tomlin as a coach-in-training, if you will. He then went to work as the LB coach for Green Bay the following year. So, in total, he has two years of coaching experience under his belt, and a training camp as an intern. 160 career sacks or not, two seasons isn't enough to make me feel comfortable when our coach and president are offensive minded guys.

As for Ryan in the following post, I'm sure he'll do well in Dallas. I like Rob Ryan, like most of us. I do think a lot of Browns fans overrated what he did here, but you have to love his fire. With an offensive coach like Jason Garrett in Dallas, hopefully Ryan will have a lot of control over their defense to mix up blitzes. Success with a team like the Cowboys will make him a lot more appealing for that potential head coaching job down the line.

Roster turnover: Browns GM Tom Heckert said it will be a challenge for him to adapt the roster to the new West Coast offense and anticipated 4-3 scheme.

LOL, Did you even read my post?

I never said he COACHED in Pittsburgh.

I said "Don't know how well he would be since he actually hasn't been a coach long but he had to have picked up something from his time in Pittsburgh with Cowher." Meaning as a player.

Didn't say we should hire him or we had to "GGTG" just an interesting guy to me with what he has done with Green Bay's linebackers. I know it mighht have seemed like I wanted to hire him after reading what I wrote but i'm really just brainstorming and looking around. That is why I said as for d-coordinator I have no clue.

But then on the other hand, even with his little experience I think he could make a fine coordinator one day. It may not intrigue alot of people but to tell you the truth I would certainly have to think about it. Everybody has to start somewhere I guess.
