The owners opted out of a deal that the players were fine with and wanted to see continue.

Their suit? It's called throwing everything at the wall and seeing what sticks. I guarantee they don't expect the draft to be done away with.

while that's not untrue, what you have to realize is that the reality of the game and it's finances changed..

Correction they used their 'option' to opt out in 08. It's not like they changed or did not honor the CBA. They got screwed with the last contract and I do not fault them for using that option.

Nobody screwed them. They were not forced to sign the deal.

Honestly, how anyone can fault one side over the other at this point is beyond me.

But I can tell you that if they use "replacement" players (which I do not think they will do) I will not pay for that if I can help it. Being a season ticket holder I may not be able to prevent them from taking my money but I'll damn sure make certain they know my displeasure.

I have not paid for my tickets yet. I am seriously thinking of forfeiting the PSLs rather than fund this moronic lockout. We'll see. It's not a decision I am looking forward to making.

I'm with ya otto. I've been pondering selling my PSL's since I haven't gone to many games since having my little girl. Something tells me I won't be able to sell my PSL's this season. And I refuse to take a bath on those.

"well, if i was at my job and i did or said this, i'd be fired" "i make x amount of money and bla bla blah"

here's the difference. that guy is the best in the world at his job, and you're replaceable.

you don't have a guaranteed contract because you aren't as important to your business, as these guys are to theirs...

with that being said, i still tend to side with the players in this thing, because i have a hard time believing the owners aren't making buck with the current system, but again, i don't know every detail in this situation.

my gut feeling says that these guys get something done before september.

the one thing that sickens is that the league is at an all time high right now. popularity has never been this good. they own sundays. they own monday nights. the super bowl is boss. and to think that there is disagreement is befuddling to me.

Here's my view. What the company makes is irrelevant in what the employees make. Sure it would be nice to know you work for a company that pays you well if they make good profits from your work, but in the end all that matters is if I feel I am compensated properly for the work I do. If not I am free to find other employment.

If suddenly the economy had left half empty stadiums and little merchandise sales, would the players willingly taken a pay cut?

i believe so, yes. like i said earlier, i think if the owners proved that the cuts and additional games were absolutely necassary, i think they would. it doesn't take a genius to figure out that you make a sacrifice if it makes the league work.

but here's the thing. even in the midst of a pretty bad recession, the nfl has been great. attendance is great in most cities, tv ratings are through the roof, merchandise, etc.. the nfl has banked during this period where everyone else is making cuts to keep business afloat.

and i think if you use other pro sports leagues as a reference point, these guys are underpaid.

yeah, there are guys that make over 10 million a year, but let's remember one thing. for every peyton manning, there are 100 blake costanzos. guys who, still make more than me and you, but are working year to year, and while even those guys are still making great money, they aren't rolling around in $300,000 cars and living in $8 million dollar mansions...

i have no problem with what these guys make. if someone offers you money like that, i think you're probably worth most of it. it's the american way. it's the american dream.

i think baseball players are overpaid, but honestly if i were a baseball player, i probbably wouldn't think that, or at least tell anyone.

I don't really care what they make either. It's professional sports, it's a given they will make a nice paycheck.

But since when does what the private company as a whole make determine what the employees make? Like I said earlier, a good employer will pay his employee's well if the profits justify it. And I don't think anyone can say the players are not paid well.

And I bet for every player there are probably 10 or more stadium and organization positions as well. So if the players get 50% of the total revenue, why do they think they deserve so much more than the other folks who make the league run.

Sure the players are the face of the organization, but without the coaches, trainers, office staff, stadium staff etc. There are no teams or game either.

Let's say there are 10 "other" employees for each player(and I bet it's more than that), that's roughly 16,000 employees to be paid with the other 50%. Add in building maintenance, travel expenses, training facilities, etc.

i think because the players are under the assumption that the owners can afford to pay them what they have been. remember, the players aren't asking for any more. it's the owners that want salaries across the league cut by 1 billion. about 18%. and they want them to play 2 more games..

they are under this assumption because the owners will not show them their financial numbers.

my guess is, the owners are still profiting, but not like they think they can. they see this as an era where nfl is just dominating our culture. we as fans may think that it might always be like that, but you don't know if popularity will be like this in 10 years, in 20 years, in 30 years... that's how i believe they are seeing it. they want to strike while the iron is hot.

because honestly if you were strugging to run your team, wouldn't you just show the nflpa so that they'd realize there isn't any other choice but to take a cut?

You answered your own question. The players get paid the big bucks because they are the ones putting themselves on the line to entertain the fans. Fans come to the stadium and tune in at home to watch because they want to be entertained by elite athletes who are able to make the seemingly impossible look pedestrian. Deep bombs. Broken tackles for huge gains. Monstrous collisions. Last second heroics and triumph or tragedy. Nobody is buying season tickets because their beer vendor serves the coldest $8 Bud Light in the country. They're not buying his replica hi-liter yellow shirt and authentic nametag.

You could argue that if the players went away then the teams would just find replacement players, but if those replacements stink then the crowds will be long gone as soon as the novelty of having any game at all wears off, and that won't take very long.

what are the chances of this actually happening?

If zero is a realistic percentage, then zero.

I have already paid my season ticket fee and if there are games in September, I'll be there....in person or at the bar.

This is just my opinion, but this whole thing with the NFL labor contract and such has left a really bad taste in my mouth....in fact, it is pushing me away from the NFL all together....

look we need to put this in perspective here folks....

These guys make more money then the President of the United States for gods sake! your telling me a football player is more valuable then the man who makes all the crucial decisions along with Congress for this entire country? are you freakin kidding me?

these NFL players that play a "sport" getting paid 30 million like Bradford is a glaring example of "what is wrong" with america....

do you realize how screwed up those kind of priorities are? Im sorry but the President is more valuable then ANY NFL player....not to mention the President has to always be looking over his shoulder in fear of some whack job wanting to hurt him....

This whole thing with the NFL and the players is nothing more then GREED of epic proportions...in fact is greed that is just as bad, perhaps even worse, then the criminals that crashed Wall Street in 2008

how much is enough really?

The NFL would be better off if they just terminated EVERY single players contracts all together and just started over as an "at will" employer....and start off with reasonable salraies and benifits for players...

A QB is worth about 300,000 and a full medical package...if he plays well he gets a performance raise...if not...you fire him and move forward like any other career.....

the NFL should just do away with contracts in their current form all together....and simply set rules that a player will play for a team he was drafted by for 5 years...after that...if the player wants to leave, he can....plain and simple. its not the end of the world if a guy leaves...you hire someone else and move forward.

this is absolute nonsense....it reaks of greed...theses players making millions like this is why it costs so much money to go to a game, why it costs sky high for a stinking hotdog.

the NFL and the owners should just flat out say:

"were not signing another contract, if you players don;t want to play we will hire other people football will go on without you" and if Manning and Brady don't like it, tough luck....there are tons of people who are good players that never got a chance that would die to play in the NFL for 300,000 bucks

atleast these players will put their hearts and souls into the game and it will actually mean more to them then a stinking paycheck.

95% of all these players today have no heart...their playing and going through the motions for a paycheck....can these bums with cause and just start over NFL....just clean the entire lot of them out and start over....fans will get better ticket prices, stuff will be cheaper, and everyone will be able to enjoy an NFL game when they want to....owners will make more money.

you better believe players who are actually playing because they love the game and are making a decent salary will be a much better football product....these guys won't be making millions...they will be pouring their hearts out on the field...working their tails off to get a raise...they won't sign some big contract and be a bum like 90% of these guys are...see rogers, Haynesworth, the list goes on and on

clean house NFL....your not required to sign no contract....the contract is up....fire every one of them and just start over...you will be better off, the fans will be better off, the product will be better, and we will actually have football players, not posers going through the motions for a paycheck.

do you want real football like college football? where guys are actually really competing? if so...you will hope the NFL cans these bums and just start over from scratch....it will be a better product and a much better expereince...

there is not one of these single bums that play in the NFL that are worth more then the President...i don't care who is Preisdent...none of these guys are worth more money then the man who runs this country...i don't care what kind of convulted messed up excuse one wants to give.

thats the end of my rant...i hope the NFL cans the whole lot of them and started over.....guys like Hillis...will play just because he loves the game...but guys like him are very few and far between in the NFL....this will weed these bums out and bring us real football players that just want to play for the love of the game just like college...and they will get a retirement and medical package...thats enough....this nonsense has got to end...its just assine....none of these guys are worth that kinda money.

you have guys and gals being shot at in war zones for the defense of this country....your telling me a football player is more worthy of money then one of our troops fighting a war? risking his life and limb? give me a break!

i hope the NFL cans the whole lot of these bums....it would be a good start!

the money wouldn't be there if the fans didn't support it. who's fault is that??

You rip the players, but what about the owners?? They're not making a killing too?

I'm really indifferent to it all, but if you don't like how much money these guys make, stop supporting it, and find a different form of entertainment.

The President is a public office, which should be done more as a service than as a job, and therefore any pay is just compensatory for the lack of income he is generating based on the time requirement of the position.

Once he leaves office he will command millions to speak at colleges and functions, and write a book or 2 and generate millions of dollars in income based off his time in public service.

While we all generally understand this is an argument that goes nowhere based on perceptions about money & value, simply stating that we need to "stop supporting" it is -- in my opinion -- actually impossible. Our economy just doesn't work that way. You can probably track every dollar of the GNP back to its origin or influence as an ad dollar for the NFL.

That may be an exaggeration, but that's how I see it.

Peterson: NFL is like 'modern-day slavery'

The NFL labor situation is "modern-day slavery," according to Minnesota Vikings star Adrian Peterson.

The running back's explosive comments were quoted in a Yahoo! Sports story last Friday, the same day the NFL Players Association decertified and the NFL owners subsequently locked out the players.

Peterson vented his anger about the owners refusing to open their financial books.

“It’s like . . . well, show us. We want more information, and they want to (expletive), going around, saying this and that, just open it up and give us the information we want,” Peterson told Yahoo! Sports shortly before the NFLPA’s decertification last Friday.

“. . . If they have nothing to hide, just give us the information. Why not? Obviously, there’s a lot to hide — these guys are professionals, and they’re maximizing what they do. But they know that if all this information comes out, the information the players want, it’ll be right out there for everyone to see. It’s a rip-off — not just for the players, but for the people who work at the concession stands and at the stadiums.”

But Peterson didn’t stop there. Many NFL players feel that they aren’t being treated as business partners, but Peterson chose a different term for the treatment.

“It’s modern-day slavery, you know?” Peterson said. “People kind of laugh at that, but there are people working at regular jobs who get treated the same way, too. With all the money . . . the owners are trying to get a different percentage, and bring in more money.”

Yahoo! writer Doug Farrar apparently removed Peterson’s comments for a time shortly after they were published. The quote already had spread across the Internet, however. Yahoo! included an editor's note Tuesday that said it was reaching out to Peterson for context to his comments.

“I don't think he meant it in the way it's going to come across, but the word itself is a problem,” Farrar said via his Twitter account.

Peterson, who was selected in the first round of the 2007 draft by the Vikings, will enter the 2011 season — if there is one — in the final year of his rookie deal, a source confirmed.

Hmm, he's concerned about the little guy, how nice of him. Wonder if he was concerned about the fans who pay high ticket prices to accommodate his 40 million dollar contract?

So ... I am willing to forgive this 100% and even commend him as long as the player's newly proposed CBA also includes retirement, benefits, and the other overall terms for parking lot attendents, concessions stand workers, ticket takers, and etc...

FF, I am peeing my paints over this one.

First off I don't recall a slave ever having one, a choice and two, the pay that Peterson has.
Nobody had to force him to sign his contract.

Here's a thought... How about the players who make thousands and even millions off of endorsements from their privilege and opportunity to play in the NFL.

Why should they not have to share that with the League and or players.
After all they want a cut of all the revenues that is made by the League.

It's not like they are paying Manning for his looks.

Nuts!

I think that Peterson should spend the remainder of the lockout/labor disruption/strike/whatever the hell this is as a true slave ...... working 18 hours/day for free ... being beaten if he isn't productive enough ... being fed barely enough to survive ... living in squalor with animals and bugs and all kinds of foul, disgusting, and diesase infested conditions ........ while those you love are being worked literally to death all around you.

Shame is that Peterson probably still sees himself as a victim regardless.
