Cahill signs relatively team-friendly deal. And, actually eats up one of his FA years for sure doing it (1 year past arbitration).

Possibly, eats into a total of 3 years of FA years if the team picks up the options (which it will do if he pitches well).

Before people get into a Dolan-hate filled fit....very similar to the Carmona deal we signed in 2008 (Cahill is a better overall prospect IMO)

The A's and their All-Star righty reached agreement Monday on a new five-year contract worth $30.5 million, which takes him through all three of his arbitration-eligible seasons and first potential year of free agency.

"It feels good. I came up with them and I'm just glad they gave me the opportunity to lock me up and I'm guaranteed to pitch for a while, so I couldn't be happier," Cahill said in Chicago before the A's played the White Sox.

The 23-year-old Cahill is 1-0 with a 1.42 ERA in two starts this season. He was the A's opening day starter after winning 18 games last year with a 2.97 ERA in his second season in the majors. Cahill was a prime reason Oakland led the AL in ERA (3.56) and shutouts (17) in 2010 while holding opponents to a .245 batting average.

"We've seen already through nine games how critical the starting rotation is to our success," assistant general manager David Forst said. "It's something we talked about during the offseason, to ensure we keep these guys through the years we control and beyond."

Cahill had been slated to earn $440,000 under the contract he agreed to on March 7. The new deal includes a $1 million signing bonus and salaries of $500,000 this year, $3.5 million in 2012, $5.5 million in 2013, $7.7 million in 2014 and $12 million in 2015.

Oakland has a $13 million option for 2016 with a $300,000 buyout. If that option is exercised, the A's can exercise a $13.5 million option for 2017 with a $500,000 buyout. The 2017 option price would escalate to $14 million if Cahill finishes among the top two in Cy Young Award voting in any year from 2011-16.

Carmona deal from 2008

Quote:

http://blog.cleveland.com/sports/2008/04/cleveland_indians_fausto_carmo.html
Carmona signed a four-year, $15 million contract with the Indians. The deal includes club options for 2012, 2013 and 2014. If the Indians exercise those options, the deal is worth $43 million and could climb to $48 million with bonuses.

Asked what he was going to do with his new-found wealth, Carmona laughed and said, "I'm going to pay Luis Rivera the $20 he fined me when he was my manager in Class A Lake County in 2003."

Rivera, who attended Thursday's press conference, serving as Carmona's interpreter, cracked up before delivering Carmona's answer to reporters.

The guaranteed portion of the contract breaks down this way: $750,000 signing bonus; $500,000 in 2008; $2.75 million in 2009; $4.9 million in 2010 and $6.1 million in 2011.

The club options are worth $7 million in 2012; $9 million in 2013; and $12 million in 2014

people around here always ask me what would happen if the drought ever ended.

and i always never have an answer for them. there are generations of people who would have no idea what to do.

i honestly think it would be under control there, i don't think it'd be like LA with the rioting. yes people would be arrested, but not to that extent.

i kind of imagine it to be like what happened when the cavs clinched a finals berth, with 20,000 people outside the stadium going nuts, and the 20k inside pouring out into a giant party. kinda like that but on steroids.

I don't think I am a fairweather fan ... I think I have averaged about 20 games a season, tried to at least see the scores of every game and go over stats ... don't think I have missed 2 games back to back since maybe ... '04 or '05 ... but last season was honestly just painful to watch. I was a horrible fan last season and I'm not proud of it but I admit it. I think there were times that I would turn it on in the background and just do something else ... read a book ... do the bills ... even play a video game and flip back from "cable" to "tv" every 10 minutes to see the score ... I just couldn't watch for some reason and didn't even enjoy watching.

It's probably way too early to tell, as we have yet to hit our lows or slumps ... but this team seems fun again.

Hopefully Carmona gets straightened out. He looks to be struggling so far tonight.

Yeah, his pitch count is horrible right now. I hope he gets it together. Also wondering if our offense can bail us out tonight.

Haren is really, really tough. We'll be extremely lucky to score a couple off of him.

Fortunately, he's already at 71 pitches through 4 1/2 ..... so he could be out by the 7th if the Indians can run out some pitch counts.

I don't have STO on my cable up here so I'm stuck to refreshing the online game center. Does this guy have a nasty sinker? It seems all these are ground outs.

2-0 now.

Yeah .... and he has something like a 1.83 ERA over the past full year or so. (If I heard right earlier)

Hell of a snag by Torii Hunter. Home plate ump's just trying to get the game over with now...calling just about everything a strike.

Angels ballboy conveniently turns a single into a ground rule double.

Well ..... another well pitched game, but unfortunately a loss.

Time to start another winning streak tomorrow. (or later tonight)

LOL Someone will probably go over the top like that for real if they lose tomorrow.

Why ? The Angels are supposed to be pretty good this year.

I know won't deep end it. Been through too many years with some good starts by both the Tribe and the Reds, only to see them fold later.

you guys can blame me for this one. first time all during the streak i didn't get to see at least part of the game. had to leave for hockey at 9, game started at 9. bleh. and we lost our game too.

but seriously, let's see how these guys respond. they responded very well to 2 asskickings, how do they respond to more of a heartbreaker?

sounds like haren was just on. gotta tip your cap to good pitching and just say you will get him next time.

that's okay. it's a long season, happens to the best of us. and had absolutely nothing to do with Haren pitching like the best pitcher in baseball so far this year.

White Sox dropped to 7-5 after blowing a 3-run lead in the 9th and then giving up 3 more runs in the 10th (Final 7-4).

and the Royals beat the Twins. KC and CLE at the top of the Central.

2013 I would have thought this would be the case. I know it's early, but it's still nice to see.

I see it's a close game tonight. Anyone care to fill me in? I've had a ton of things going on tonight and haven't been able to pay much attention to the game.

Cabrera tripled in the first then scored on a sac fly by Choo I think. Our other runs were from a Everett single then a Brantley double and Choo on a fielders choice to tie the game.

Angels scored both their runs early. One was on a Kendrick double. The throw came in from the outfield and Asdrubal turned and threw to second to try to catch Kendrick overrunning the base but threw it into the dugout so Kendrick scored. The other 2 runs were from a 2-run HR by I believe Torii Hunter.

Carrasco didn't look too bad today & Pestano through a dominant 8th.

Lots of dumb baserunning by the Indians. Everett caught in a rundown at third. Choo picked off third. Cost themselves a couple of runs there potentially.

The Cabrera error was the dumbest thing I've seen in a while though.

The one positive is that neither of the two losses to the Angels were due to starting pitching. Carmona gave up 2 runs over 8 innings yesterday; Carrasco 3 runs in 7 tonight. I can live with that.

you get starts like that consistently, you are going to win quite a few ballgames.

i don't like the mental errors, but with a young team, they can learn from this. if this were an older veteran team, i'd be worried.

You start 8-2 so that if you lose a couple games it doesn't matter that much.
