It's a mind-boggling eight-year, $80 million deal, with $22 million in guaranteed money, and it makes Clements the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history.
Clements was expected to be pursued by several teams, but he never got out of San Francisco.

Thanks. I couldn't fine one I'd rather pick up Dielman to go along with Steinbach than pay 80 mil to Clements

Another half cracked link, but they all add up to a conclusion of done deal IMO. Depends how it is broken down, but 10 mill a year is pretty good bling bling. I can get used to Holly, if he stays healthy. There should be more budget minded options available also

I tried to get on the San fran board and it was to busy. Overloaded with Peepers. I want to know what their fans think about breaking the bank for him.

I'm fine with this Clements hasn't been a cornerstone like that.
A good friend of mine's Whole family is diehard Bills fans, and they were completely fine with him leaving until about week 7.
He plays for cash. He's overrated and over-hyped. He's certainly no Champ Bailey, I dont even think he's a healthy Leigh Bodden.

Great news.
Glad we didn't sign him. I didn't want to spend big money on a cb from day one.

I agree. I was interested in Clements, but at 8/80... WOW?!?! Talk about overpaying for a guy. As has been said, ain't nobody worth that.

I like Clements but that contract is bonkers - he's not worth THAT much money. We could definitely spend the cashes better elsewhere.

Everyone is getting way too caught up with the $80 million figure. Bottom line was Arrington signed for $49 million.
While $22 mil guaranteed is a lot of money, with the way the salary cap is inflating, that really isn't that bad.

Maybe not at the moment, but this upwards trend in salaries is going to catch the new cap levels quickly in just another season or 3 at this rate.

Who? Asante - no he was franchised.
In other SF News, there are reports that the 49ers' deal with free agent safety Michael Lewis includes $10 million in guaranteed money. That's an incredible bonus for a player who lost his starting job to Sean Considine after getting burned in Week 6 by Saints WR Joe Horn for a touchdown. New Orleans ultimately won that game.
Lewis played in 14 games in 2006 for the Eagles and finished with 43 tackles, two sacks and two interceptions -- one, an 84-yard return for a TD in a Week 14 game against the Redskins. Lewis had nine passes defensed and a forced fumble.
Not many NFL teams had Lewis among the top-tier free agents, but it's clear the 49ers were intent on upgrading their secondary and they've committed over $30 million in guaranteed money to make that happen.

I think he and his agent are probably in a room somewhere doing their best Dr. Evil impressions. 80 Meeeeeelion dollarrrrs! Whuuhahhahahahaha, Whuhahahahaha! That would just be foolish money for the Browns to try and match with the needs on the team.
Brown's fan since 2004...the tradition continues.

glad we didnt get him for that, he is good, but the best defensive player in the league? no way! Imo, the 49's can only be upset with him in a couple years because they are going to place unrealistice expectation on him. I'm not sure I'd even say this guy is a top 5 cb in the league, leave it to san fran freaksco

They had what, 36 mil in cap space? They must really think they're ready to win now, spending that kind of money on Clements and Lewis.

my thoughts exactly, i was just saying that they must think they are a player a way from winning, to spend 80 mil on a cornerback, ludicrus! I guess this puts them out of contention for Thomas

Saw this at work..........
At first I was ticked off, but if it was gonna a burn a hole THAT big in our pockets, then I guess we have other options that I like better. $80 mill is a helluva sum.
He's not the best corner in the league, let alone the best defender. But he's now getting paid as the best defensive man in the NFL. Wow, I would have been happy to have him, but then my joy would have turned to disgust knowing we paid him that much money.

I had posted that Clements had signed with SF around 6pm but for some reason it was deleted. But I am glad we did not try to make that crazy offer that he got from the 49rs.

I believe it is because you used the rumor mill as your source (going from memory). In case you haven't seen them yet read The Rules of the Pound at the top right of the page. Welcome to the board.
