I know H & H have said they wont be players in FA but we do have to fill some of these roster spots with NFL players,
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We will sign some guys. They just don't want to overpay for guys that are nothing more than above-average NFL starters.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So I guess above average guys are not better than our average guys. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the GOAL of every team, is to win the Super Bowl, not build for 3 years down the road?

and spend real money to get to the cap floor.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As another article on this board pointed out, you don't have to get to the cap floor till 2013.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So let's sit on over 30 million dollars, and lose 12 games just to resign some guys before the cap floor deadline, that makes since. And to everyone who says we have to save some for Thomas, Hillis, Rubin, if you haven't noticed if theres a will theres always a way. Teams that were over the cap as recently as 3 days ago are still spending big money.

because when all of the good players are left and left with crap and have to spend your money, you get carp with crappy contracts.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Or you get players who you like for reasonable contracts.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Or you get crap that no one else wants for crappy deals.

I know this is against board etiquette but I posted this in another thread and I think it goes here as well:

There are no "five year plans" anymore. That just doesn't cut it in today's NFL. At most, a fan base or an owner will give a FO 3 years to start hitting the playoffs. Unless you're Mike Brown and the Bengals....then you just care about money.

This team is sorely lacking in talent. Two years at 5-11 should be a solid hint that we pretty much suck as a football team.

Teams that suck need talent. We have very little. I'm all for building with the Draft. But that cannot and should not be the only way to get talent. Not if you want your team to be at least "good" before they leap to great.

I'm not saying grab every big name FA out there. But one or two high quality guys are not out of our reach financially. The fact that we don't appear to be even trying to haul in top notch talent is starting to worry me.

I have faith in H&H's abilities as football men. But that faith isn't blind. And it isn't everlasting. I don't expect a winner this year. But I do expect improvement over last year. If I don't see it I won't be bashful about voicing my displeasure.

I know I have ranted, but starting to worry me does not cover it. Waiting for next year is not an attitude fans want to hear as their team prepares to do battle with the thin talent and a roster full of holes. Not only worry that we will not compete but the drubbings we take may devastate a pride that Mangini and ryan was building.
To stand pat and pretend that is a strategy when we are so seriously undermanned says to me management is writing off the year and we are officially in the running for the #1 pick.
We will not only get beat a lot this year but we are back to HUMILIATING non competitive football.
The collective agreement must not apply to this year because lerner and the front office seems intent to save their sheckles for next year.
How livid will this fan base be should we win One or two games? and get pounded into the dirt?
Should that happen Holmgren?herock or Both will be shown the door along with the coach.

Cleveland Browns WR Mohamed Massaquoi (foot) has a cast on his left foot/leg during the team's start of training camp.

well, that just sucks..

I think there's an idea some folks better start warming up to. MoMass might be on the outside looking in. When the dust settles he might just be our third or fourth best receiver.

I say bring Edwards back. I like the thought of a starting 1, 2 of Edwards and Little. Bring Edwards back without the weight of living up to a #3 overall pick status. Do some PR to save a little face with the fans. I would (and maybe this is asking too much from him) hope that the fact the JETS are kind of saying you're kind of not considered a key piece for us that he will be humbled and forced to mature a little bit. Edwards always frustrated me. Fitzgerald talent but always #2 production. But I'll take his talent on this team any day.

Sun, I have a couple of good buddies who are SF fans so I pay attention to them. He certainly never lived up to the contract and his play was mostly subpar.

Of course that would be a key piece of it.

I'd like to see us attempt it though.

I really hate saying this,, But, would the Steelers go after Asante or any high dollar FA or someone in trade if they were in the same situation as us? No, they'd bite the bullet and take the time to build it right.

Just saying, jumping on a guy like Asante or really any big buck FA/trade doesn't make any sense to me.

If the Steelers were 30 milion or so below the cap floor this year you can bet they'd be spending the money to reach it. And if they could improve their team by doing so? You can bet they would bring in a player that fit their scheme and that could play. They wouldn't spend it all on scrubs. I'm not asking for them to spend like a drunken sailor on some washed up old guys. Would it have KILLED them to sign ONE talented player young enough to stick around a while and make a difference?

If they just can't stand the thought of bringing in some talent, then I suggest they either extend JT and give him ALL of that 30 million this year or just hand it over to the NFL as a fine for not spending it.

In the meantime, if one of our corners goes down we'll be looking at Buster Skrines as a starter. Yikes! We have VERY little depth at corner and zero depth at DE.

On the plus side we're definitely in the hunt for Andrew Luck. I think we have a real good shot.....

Gees, I would have thought that would have been said about Robo instead of MoMass.

As for edwards, like I said, I could warm to the idea, but frankly, I don't think it's even remotely in the cards.. My best guess is that we don't want him and he don't want us and anyway, someone else will eventually offer him more money than we would anyway.

Just a guess..

You can tell people are frustrated if not desperate when they start talking about bringing Edwards back.

Even if we wanted him back, he wouldn't want to come here again.

I think the bridges were crossed on that one, never to be revisited.

I'd sure like to hear what the plan is to reach the cap floor without bringing in any talent. Whatever it is, by saying we don't NEED any talent while claiming "no excuses" they are straight up saying they have everything they need RIGHT NOW to win. If that's the case we should all be very happy this year by the performance of this team.
If not, then I'd sure like to hear exactly why they WANTED to be talent poor at some pretty key positions and just couldn't bear the thought of signing one single big talent player. I must have seriously underestimated the talent level of this team. We must be loaded for BEAR.

I say it about both of them. We won't have a good WR corp until those guys are 4th and 5th on the depth chart(if on the team at all). Neither guy has shown me much. Now, perhaps one of them might take to the WCO and blossom into a decent receiver, but I'm not holding my breath. I say trade that Atlanta pick for DeSean Jackson. Then spend some of that cap space we need to make up on a new contract for him.

Benard part time was a better pass rusher than Ray Edwards. I really believe this kid can be a double digit sack artist as he gains more experience. He isn't as good against the run as Edwards but he wasn't bad in that area.

My question is: do the Browns plan to use Benard as a DE or a Lb? I think he is one of the players most hurt by the lockout. He is unable to be told whether he should bulk up for DE or lighten up for Olb.

I think I remember the Coach (maybe Heckert) mentioning Benard would be look at, at DE and I can only speculate as to weather or not he has bulked up, but my guess is he needed to add about 10 lbs.

Just when it looked like the Philadelphia Eagles were doing nothing but spending to bolster their defense for a title run this year, they’ve traded away a member of their defense for a future draft pick.

Philadelphia has traded defensive tackle Brodrick Bunkley to Cleveland for the Browns’ fifth-round pick in 2012.

Bunkley was the Eagles’ first-round draft pick, No. 14 overall, in 2006. Although he showed flashes of the talent the Eagles saw in him coming out of Florida State, he never became quite the player he was expected to become. Last year Bunkley played through an elbow injury for most of the season and appeared in 14 games, starting five.

Today’s acquisition of free agent defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins made Bunkley expendable, and he’ll compete for a starting spot in Cleveland.

We traded a 5th rounder for Brodrick Bunkley.

He fits in with Rubin and Taylor. He's smaller than those 2, but has a similar skill-set as Rubin in he's very strong, and effective against the run. We got a solid rotation of run stuffers at DT now. Gotta keep your big men rested

I kinda feel bad for the guy though. The Eagles have made a huge splash this offseason and are looking to be a very special team this year and he gets booted before he gets a chance to enjoy it as well, but I'm glad to have him

Thanks for the news.

I was wondering when Heckert would get around to another trade with his former team.

DT Brodrick Bunkley will not have the expectations he had in Philly and is young enough to fit into future plans.

I wonder what his contract status is?
A 5th rounder seams like a fair price none the less.

I remember many folks on the board wanting us to draft Bunkley.

More than happy to ship a fifth for a warm body on the line.

The Eagles are killing it right now. Loading up on talent and piling up some picks.

Not a bad deal for our interior rotation of DT's.

His contract is set to expire at the end of the season, so he would be a FA in 2012, unless we sign him to an extension soon, or sometime during the season (obviously)

this isn't One way or the other. when a team has as many GAPING holes as this team does across the board and then do nothing in free agency is communicating that the front office is building for Next year and expecting the fans to endure a 3 win season in silence should that happen we will see if they get an opportunity to stay on themselves. the argument is not blow the bank or Do nothing there is some grey in between black and white.

Ugh the success holmgren had was as a COACH and now is in the rear view mirror. As a GM he was FIRED. All I am saying is IF you have a young qb with suspect blocking recovering from an injured shoulder with crappy receivers and you promise some rela weapons and well do waht we have so far, you are playing dice with reality. When you see all three Qbs in walking boots and do not upgrade the oline you are playing dice with reality.
When you see your star RB so g\beat up by the end of the season his last 3 games barely TOTAL a 100 yards and your idea of help is a tippy toe 3rd down back you are playing dice with reality.
when you have almost no DEs and hire a conservative DC and go with a 4-3 lacking the talent or depth to do so you are playing dice with reality. when you have slow oft injured lbers with little deph..razor thin in the secondary with no pass rush.....

We are terribly unprepared to compete. we played physical football in 2010 yet i wonder if that left the door with Ryan and Mangini. remind me the plan when we are routinely getting beat by 3 scores our QBs are injured and our defense resembles a throughway making opposing QBs lick their chops.
Yet we are being patient. after a three win season and another wait till next year good luck finding any free agents that want to come to Cleveland.

Thanks,

Well at least we can set his price and are not locked into a long term deal someone else negotiated. Add that to the fact that we are not filling up our cap hit yet we should be in good shape to retain him if we so wish.

Philadelphia Eagles: Brodrick Bunkley Will Push Antonio Dixon to the Bench
By Bob Cunningham
(Senior Analyst) on February 26, 2011

When the 2011 season kicks off, Brodrick Bunkley will be the starting defensive tackle next to Mike Patterson, and Antonio Dixon will be on the bench.

And the reason is simple: Bunkley better fits the new scheme.

New defensive coordinator Juan Castillo has already made it very clear that defensive line coach Jim Washburn will be able to do whatever he wants with the guys up front. It will be Washburn's scheme, and Castillo, along with Mike Caldwell, Mike Zordich, and Johnnie Lynn will have to work accordingly.

In Washburn's scheme, the defensive ends go after the quarterback. That's been talked about to death, so we all know that, but something that's not being talked about is the fact that his defensive tackles also play a one-gap responsibility rather than two.

Under Sean McDermott (and, to a degree, Jim Johnson as well), the defensive ends were taught to look inside and play run before attack the quarterback. That half-second on every snap was the difference between a sack or a touchdown pass on several occasions.

McDermott (and, again, Johnson) also had the defensive tackles responsible for two gaps on every snap. Since they usually would line up either in, or close to, the B-gap, they would have to sit in the B-gap and squeeze the A-gap. That meant taking on the guards and driving them inside to create a pile in the middle.

That, of course, is the job description of a big defensive tackle weighing somewhere between 320-340 pounds — not for someone the size of Bunkley who is generously listed at 305 pounds.

But Bunkley did it, and did it well for a couple seasons. However, he struggled in 2010 and then injured his elbow. If it was going to be tough for him to play a two-gap system before, it was going to get even tougher with an elbow injury that was obviously going to hamper his upper-body strength.

Enter the 330-pound Antonio Dixon who fit the scheme perfectly, and we have what appears to be Dixon drastically out-playing Bunkley.

That, however, was not necessarily the case.

Bunkley is still the superior player. In a one-gap scheme he could easily be one of the most disruptive defensive tackles in the entire league. He has a very good first step off the ball and if he's allowed to use that speed through the gap rather than sitting and trying to create a stalemate at the line, we could see a very different Bunkley than we've seen recently.

In fact, we could even see the pass-rusher the Eagles thought they were getting back in the first round of the 2006 draft.

This is not to say that Dixon will be useless in this new scheme; he's a very good player who, after shedding a few pounds, can still be very productive in this new system.

However, it would not surprise me in the least to see him go from a starter to the fourth guy in the rotation underneath starters Bunkley and Patterson, and former second-round pick Trevor Laws who, like Bunkley, should thrive under Washburn.

I was one of the peeps wanting Bunkley that year. He didn't pan out as good as i expected but we are in a big need. I don't like giving the pick for one year of contract but it is a reasonible pick at least. My only question is this...Are none of the DLine availible in free agency on his level? Did we really have to give up a pick to fill this spot?
This is a minor complaint since our needs on the dline are so big. Just throwing my thoughts out there.

It's a 5th round pick.....it equals his failed potential, plus his glimmer of hope.

I don't mind giving up 5th round picks for former 1st rounders who still offer a flicker.

The loss usually isn't great and the potential payoff is worth the gamble.

To me it's like getting the powerball number plus two others up front......you're going to get a little something.

Hit another number or two and you have bettered most 5th rounders by a good amount..

Outside of Mebane and Jenkins there wasn't a lot of talent out there at DT. I really think Bunkley will be a solid fit in this defense and he gives us an excellent 3 man rotation in the middle. This is one of those deals that wont draw a lot of press but could really work out well for the Browns.

Been reading some Eagles posts, and the the bright side looks like he was not ideal for a 2 gap system which I gather the eagles were running, and that he could really excel in Jaurons 1 gap. One guy went so far as to say Bunkley could become a terror in a one gap. Here is to hoping these two posters are on to something.

If we could add another defensive end our defense could be half way descent this year I think.

Offensively I would like to see us add a speed guy. Steve Smith from the Giants comes to mind. We could also use a right tackle.

I would definately like to see us add one high tier guy either at end or receiver.

We'll see.

As a baseball guy, I do know a change of scenery can make a big difference a good percentage of the time.

I do know Bunkley had what most people look for in a player out of college.

For whatever reason it didn't work for him in the NFL.

Put him in a new environment and maybe it will.

To me, he is like Gerrard Warren......to the team that drafted him, the team and fans expected him to be the next Joe Green.

Ok.....that didn't happen, but Warren was still a pretty good player....at least to the team and fans after he left the Browns.

It wasn't Warrens or Bunkley's fault they were drafted where they were drafted. OJK....they didn't live up.....it doesn't mean they couldn't play.

Bunkley could be a great value.

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

I'd sure like to hear what the plan is to reach the cap floor without bringing in any talent.

Since you wrote this, you've learned that there isn't a floor or minimum amount that needs to be spent..

Do you want to be sarcastic again?
