Went to camp yesterday, it was a gorgeous day. I wasn't able to watch everything, but what I did notice, I liked a lot.

The offense looked crisp. Very few balls on the ground.

McCoy was hitting his targets in stride. This should be very effective in gaining yards.

He loves his TEs. Moore & Watson in particular. Neither of them missed a ball.

Only saw Robo in on one drill. We kept talking about it, wondering where he was. He was around, but didn't participate in 11 on 11's and only saw him once on an overthrown deep ball during the 7 on 7s. Saw him catching passes on the far side of the field late in the session, but that was it. Thought it was very strange.

Norwood is quick! Has a serious afterburner once he gets the ball in his hands.

Little looked pretty good. Caught most of the balls that were thrown to him, but Skrine defended him well twice. Once with a break-up, and once he just ripped it from his hands when Little was on the ground on his back for a take-away. It was sweet.

Cribbs looks good. It was funny though, at warm ups, he was walking around, chatting it up with everyone while they were stretching. Finally a coach walked up to him and said, "Do you have a problem?" Cribbs responded by doing some half-asses stretches.

Moore is awesome. If he can stay healthy, he will be a weapon to contend with.

Watson looked good. He is solid.

Hillis will be catching a lot of balls. He looks really good. In great shape.

Brandon Jackson looks good too. Has some speed.

Hardesty put a lot of time in carrying his helmet. I think when the season starts, he should definitely be one of our best helmet carriers.

McCoy has is best chemistry so far with Hillis, Watson, Moore, Little, Cribbs, & Norwood, I think, in that order. But again, I don't know why Robo wasn't lined up so I don't know where he fits in.

Seneca looked okay. Not great, but good. McCoy was better yesterday.

Jarett Brown is someone to keep an eye on. His throws are live and come out hot. There was at least one drop by a 3rd stringer, (Castile maybe, but not sure,) because of the zip on the ball.

O-line looked solid. Braxton is a beast, I think he got in there for Pashos a couple times, if I remember correctly, (though it may have been with the twos.)

Lauvao looked good.

As I said, it looked like the O carried the day for the most part.

On D, I saw Fujita make a nice INT, it was a ways away, so I'm not sure who the intended target was... maybe Mitchell?

Skrine is Mr. Hustle. Loved his energy.

Dockery is as advertised. Great hustle, in on every play. Wished him luck as he signed autographs and tooks pics with the kids. He was appreciative.

Coye was invisible. Saw him there, so I know he was on the field, but...

Haden and Ward are awesome.

Adams looks good, Young looked a little lost, but has physical ability.

Jayme Mitchell is a beast! Don't know how he'll play, but he's huge.

Middle of the D-line is solid with Taylor & Ruben.

Coaches were calm and controlled, no yelling except, "Tiger! Tiger!" A lot of teaching. Colt spent time with his receivers & TEs when he wasn't throwing discussing things like route running, hand position and ball placement. It was good to see.

Overall, it was a great time. Good energy all around.

That's really all I can think of right now. If I didn't mention someone, it's simply because I didn't notice them do anything of note.

Cleveland Browns training camp: Smith's speed turning heads

Steve Doerschuk
Sporting News

BEREA, Ohio — Rookie Buster Skrine, star 2010 rookie Joe Haden and 30-year-old Mike Adams probably are the fastest men in camp on defense.

Based on the eyeball test alone, there is little doubt that one speedster stands above the rest on offense — undrafted rookie Armond Smith.

Smith wasn’t a blip on the college football map until 2010, and even then he didn’t start right away. Plus, he played at tiny Union College in Kentucky. His quickness and blazing speed eventually got him playing time and big stats, but barely a sniff from the NFL. The Browns were the only team that called after the lockout when undrafted free agents were being signed — and they’re not they did. He is running away from defenders and moving with confidence. He should be fun to watch late in preseason games, when it would not be a surprise to see him break enough big plays to gain roster consideration.

Coach Pat Shurmur says QB Colt McCoy and the “ones” will play the first quarter of Saturday’s preseason opener against Green Bay. Veteran QB Seneca Wallace will take over with the “twos” in the second quarter.

At Green Bay in last year’s first preseason game, Wallace played lights out in leading the Browns to a 21-14 halftime lead. He knew then that Jake Delhomme would start in the regular season, if healthy, and he has the same understanding in relation to McCoy now. However, he also knows that both Delhomme and McCoy went down with injuries last season, and, at 31, he is hungry for any chance to play.

Wallace spent seven years in Seattle in a West Coast system to the one being installed with the Browns. Coaches suspect he will look better than McCoy early in the preseason, especially since he will be facing second units. McCoy would have to fall flat on his face for Wallace to enter the discussion as the opening-day starter. McCoy has steadily improved in camp, making that unlikely to happen.

Projected starting safety Usama Young might sit out the preseason opener after sitting out part of today’s practice with a tight hamstring. Mike Adams has a legitimate chance to move ahead of Young. Montario Hardesty is running but has been held out of practices this week. He is on a slow road back from 2010 knee surgery, but remains in the discussion to be Peyton Hillis’ top backup. He will not face the Packers.

I never missed an afternoon practice when they where in Lakeland College (guilty of leaving work early), but they are just too far for me to get there on a regular basis nowadays, not to mention the price of gas. (about 50 bucks round trip)

so you can read it at work

Quote:

Carlton Mitchell, WR

-First of all, there is big buzz both online and on Twitter about Mitchell and his potential. Seems there is a large number of fans who are really backing him to become the Browns' deep threat this year and for the foreseeable future.

-I have seen, since he recovered from his shoulder injury last week, a receiver who took the time to really learn his craft and build his body during the lockout.

-Last year, when Mitchell was a rookie, he looked really skinny. But you can clearly tell he spent time in the weight room this offseason because he arrived to camp well sculpted.

-His route running is vastly improved; he catches nearly every pass thrown his way and he does a great job of utilizing his speed. To those who say the Browns don't have any team speed, I beg to differ because Mitchell will blow the doors off of defenders this season.

-On one particular play this morning, Mitchell was matched up against Skrine and it was a showdown of speed versus speed. Mitchell used his speed to beat out Skrine to get open and caught a crossing route.

-On another play, Mitchell burned past cornerback Coye Francies on a deep route and came up with a fantastic one-handed grab on his way into the endzone.

-Finally, on an incomplete pass from quarterback Colt McCoy, Mitchell was able to burn past S. Brown and get open even with safety Mike Adams doubling up on him. If his fingers were an inch longer, he would have come down with another great one-handed catch.

Other Observations

-Linebacker Kaluka Maiava was still getting reps with the first team defense as the weakside linebacker.

-Cornerback James Dockery made several plays batting out passes from his covered receiver and he looks to be the one undrafted rookie who could make this roster when final cuts come around.

-I saw McCoy going through his progressions after the snap at times, but when tight end Evan Moore was on the field, it seemed McCoy starred him down a little too much.

-More double running back sets with both Peyton Hillis and Brandon Jackson in the backfield. In one formation, one was the to left and the other on the right of McCoy when he was in shotgun.

As I predicted.

True, you can't tell how they will do in a game and the real bullets start flying, by practice a lone, unless they are not performing in practice.

I like all the positive reports about these wide receivers, I just don't see where they all fit. Even though Robiske and Massaqoui aren't as good as everyone hoped I see them both as locks to make the team. Then, obviously, you have Cribbs. So that's three dudes right there. Little and Mitchell seem to be shoe-ins, Little because he was our second round pick and Mitchell because of his huge potential. Now, we've all heard positive things about this Matthews guy, Norwood, and even Demetrius Williams. Only one of them will probably make this team. Matthews and Norwood you can try and stash on the practice squad, but Williams is either on the team or cut.

Some difficult decisions ahead.

Kid is something special. There are always a few undrafteds that I believe has a chance to make the team. This young man has the chance to be a special player and major contributor. He has that WOW!! factor.

I hope we can find room for him the roster or PS.

Was it you that posted the video of his College days?

At times it looked like he was in fast motion and the rest were at normal speed

I just noticed this:

This concerns me quite a bit.

I hope that Cribbs isn't getting too full of himself. He's not that great a receiver, despite the seemingly annual buildup, and he hasn't broken a kick in quite a while.

He was out there on teams, catching punts with Norwood and Smith (who blazes), and he was working hard with the receivers, and looked good catching the ball and getting RAC. It could be that he had been out on the field early and had already warmed up, but I don't know for sure.

Side note - I thought the punter was pretty inconsistent. His distances were all over the place. He boomed a couple, but he's no Zaster-blaster or Hodges.

Smith should shine with the practice players in the 4th quarter of preseason games.

Wow. Awesome writeup.

I love reading these comprehensive type writeups from those on the board.

Your write up was mostly positive.

What were the negatives that you saw?

LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

Hm, well, I suppose I would have to say that the D was mainly getting beat by the O... lol.

Didn't see much pass rush, but then again, I didn't really expect to. But no batted balls and passes were mostly completed, so the DBs and/or LBs weren't stopping them, (other than the cases I noted.) Most completed plays were in the middle of the field so the outside corners were covering well.

RBs were finding their holes everywhere but in the middle...lol. (It looks likes we may have some speed to get outside with Jackson.)

Didn't see Colt throwing many sideline throws, if that can be seen as a negative. (On the plus side, his arm looked good going down field. He threw a few nice 15-20 yard passes.) So I don't think it's an issue of having the strength to get it to the sideline, but more about comfort level with the receivers and tight coverage by the #1 & 2 CBs. (I don't think arm strength is an issue for Colt, it may not be the strongest arm in the league, but it's strong enough. He can throw the deep ball fairly accurately from what I saw.) If the outside receivers were covered, (which they often were,) he'd go to the middle of the field and hit his TEs or slot, or check down and dump off to Hillis or Jackson.

I think punter may be an issue. We'll see.

Cleveland Browns might have hit the jackpot again at punter with Richmond McGee, Bill Livingston writes
Published: Friday, August 12, 2011, 6:20 PM     Updated: Friday, August 12, 2011, 6:29 PM
By Bill Livingston, The Plain Dealer

They are a team within a team, members of an often thankless lodge. They play cards together in the locker room. They hang out together at the other end of the practice field when the offense and defense are smacking pads.

They are each NFL team's long snapper, place-kicker and punter.

On the Browns, two of them are as well-known and highly regarded as such positions permit.
Ryan Pontbriand of Rice, the first long-snapping specialist ever taken in the draft (by the Browns in the fifth round in 2003), has twice been a Pro Bowler. Phil Dawson of Texas, the last of the original Browns from the 1999 franchise restoration, is a former second-team All-NFL kicker and the team's designated franchise player.

The third, the new punter, Richmond McGee of Texas, hopes to make his own name. If it is done at all, it will be done in a hurry.

"I'm a fast punter," said McGee who will handle punting chores tonight against Green Bay in the exhibition opener. "Most punters have their toes on the 15-yard line [meaning 15 yards behind the line of scrimmage.] My heels are on the 14-yard line. The 10-yard line is the block point. I only need 3 yards to get it off."

Special teams in football are as stopwatch-and-measurement geeky as track and field. A 15-yard snap should reach the punter's hands in 0.08 of a second. McGee is about 4 feet closer to the long snapper, counting the distance from his heels to his toes, so the snap to him at the same velocity would take 0.073 of second. Twenty-seven milliseconds difference might not seem like much, but every little bit of time saved helps in a discipline in which the ball is supposed to be in the air, snap to thump, in a total of 2.0-to-2.1 seconds.

"I've only ever had one punt blocked," said McGee, who was a senior on Texas' 2005 national championship team. "It was against K-State. We had a missed protection."

He was not the most noticeable Longhorn, punting only 34 times in 2005, the second-fewest among major college teams, as Texas scored an NCAA record 652 points. "Vince Young didn't give me a lot of chances," McGee said, grinning. "But if we were going to win, that's what he was supposed to do."

McGee was signed after previous stints in the Philadelphia Eagles' training camp and on the Chicago Bears practice squad to replace Reggie Hodges after Hodges snapped his Achilles tendon early in training camp.

In this regard, unlike Pontbriand and Dawson, who have set their own standards of excellence, McGee has some big shoes to fill, no matter how far behind the line of scrimmage they are positioned. Hodges was one of the NFL's best at pinning opponents inside their 20. He also ran 68 yards on a fake punt against the defending Super Bowl champion Saints in New Orleans. It was the longest dash by a punter in NFL history.

"He might have run out of gas," the affable McGee said. "I know I would have. Punters aren't used to running that far."

At Texas, McGee executed one fake punt for a 2-yard gain. "I missed the first down by a yard. My tight end, David Thomas [now with the Saints] was trying to hold off three guys," said McGee.

The Browns have often had good punters (Chris Gardocki, Dave Zastudil, Hodges), possibly because they have gotten so much practice at it with their offense. After Hodges' injury, McGee is the only punter in camp. He is also the holder on Dawson's field-goal tries. It is the first time he has been a regular holder.

Coach Pat Shurmur has been impressed with his punting. So was former Browns coach Sam Rutigliano. Observing practice Thursday in Berea, Rutigliano said, almost under his breath, "That punter is pretty good."

In addition to the national championship at Texas, McGee was on a state championship high school team in the Dallas suburb of Garland. "My record is incredible. I think I've lost six games my whole career," he said.

Told that that is probably going to change, McGee said, "You said that, I didn't."

Browns founder Paul Brown called the seemingly humble punt, because of the huge amount of yardage that is at stake, "the most important play in football." Jim Tressel made it a special teams mantra at Ohio State.

McGee said he had never heard the saying before. "But I'm in favor of it," he said.

Hmmm let me think about that for a second

we really need to get the real games going if we're having articles about the punter already... I know it won't happen, but I sure hope we don't see our punter too often this year

Went and looked at his Youtube video... dude is just plain fast.. no two shakes about it.

Granted... some of the angles the defenders took were just completely wrong. But a lot of the time it looked like he was like two steps faster than everyone else. Would liked to have seen him against some of the better defenses in the country at the time.

Hm, I wonder in what imaginary world Rutigliano or Shurmur would ever go on record as saying that the only punter in camp is not doing well.

Admittedly, I was only at one camp, and merely stated that I was unimpressed with the consistency of his punts. Cle was talking about the one time he saw him in a game situation. But now that I've actually read an article that says Shurmur is impressed and Coach Sam likes him, I'm certain there's absolutely nothing to be concerned about.

Go Team!

Am I the only one who gets frustrated when I read an article or posts on here about a player I'm unfamiliar with, and it doesn't list the position he plays? Now I'm gonna go see if Mr Armond Smith plays RB, or WR, or other.

Shurmur,, Maybe wouldn't say much.. But Coach Sam,,, man, if he don't like someone, he says it.. No hold backs, no issue with laying it out there.. Sam don't play the word games anymore.

Even Shurmur to a point. Remember this is the guy that says Benard needs work and to lose some weight. Shurmur seems to call it as he sees it, but he tends to do it in a politically correct manner..

Just some worthless thoughts really, because we haven't even had our 1st preseason game, but maybe tonight,we'll all get to see the kid.

by the way,, you were in Cleveland and didn't tell us so that we could move our schedules around and meet you for an adult beverage? Huh... next time I'm in Cali,, I'm gonna ignore you too.

I'm a fast punter," said McGee who will handle punting chores tonight against Green Bay in the exhibition opener. "Most punters have their toes on the 15-yard line [meaning 15 yards behind the line of scrimmage.] My heels are on the 14-yard line. The 10-yard line is the block point. I only need 3 yards to get it off."

Let's see about that the first time a team actually sends the house to actually try to get one...

U might just find out this game ain't Texas college and high school football...

Go Browns!!!

McGee was horrible on Family day when I was there.

I was there and he wasn't horrible like you say. He had one bad punt in the beginning..not Derrick frost bad, but compared to his others. Everything else was booming high and pretty good. I think you are stretching it.

I really hope the kid is a viable option. We've really been spoiled by Zastudil & Hodges. They were major contributors. I just thought McGee was inconsistent, his deep punts varied by as much as 30 yards, unlike Hodges, (who I got to see last year,) who was consistently long, and along with Zastudil, could put the ball inside the 10 with consistency and could accurately place their punts. This had a huge impact on the success of our special teams. McGee has the leg, no doubt, he just needs to be consistent and accurate... I just didn't see it my one day there.

by the way,, you were in Cleveland and didn't tell us so that we could move our schedules around and meet you for an adult beverage? Huh... next time I'm in Cali,, I'm gonna ignore you too.

I would have loved to have a beverage or two with you, (and anyone else who would've cared to join us,) but it was a busy day. It was my birthday present from my gf: camp in the morning, picnic by the lake, take in downtown Cleveland, then the Indians game that night. It was a great day, (except for the loss to Detroit,) a cop even pointed us to a free parking spot for the game! Sorry we were unable to connect though.

Great gift and she obviously knows you well. Sounds like a keeper to me.

Am I perfect? No
Am I trying to be a better person?

Saw this quote in an article

“Peyton has implemented some incentives for us blocking and I want to help him and other backs spring for long gains.” WR Greg Little

wonder what those incentives are?

so basically what this article is saying is, Shurmur is impressed with him, Coach Sam likes him,, But Cle and Cal don't.

Hmmm let me think about that for a second

He may be very good. I am just stating what I saw for the one practice I was there for. Maybe he has been outstanding since. But on Family Day last Saturday, he wasn't good.

He won't run them over.

Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.
