I don't think we are going to cut Droughns...I really dont see it. I think Savage would be happy going into the season with Droughns, Lewis, and Harrison as our RB's...
Now T. Smith on the other may end up being cut if Vickers can focus on blocking instead of FB passes
The only way we keep Droughns is if we want to pay $3m to a backup fullback. Savage may like that, I don't. A Droughns/Lewis platoon would give us no advantage, as both are bruising runners that don't really have a great top gear. Now, Peterson (with his big play capability) and Lewis... that's a real combo. If we went into the regular season with only Lewis, Droughns and Wright, I'd be stunned. I don't know that that combo would produce much over what we have recently.
We're... we're good?

i believe what you said was
"Dude the indictment came in 2003 but do you know when the incident actually happened?? Let me help you...it was when he was in COLLEGE..."
but, unless this source in not accurate it says: "The indictment accuses Lewis of arranging a meeting in June of 2003 between a woman who claimed to have a large amount of cocaine to sell and an associate of Lewis who allegedly wanted to buy the drugs, Miller reported."
"arranging a meeting in June of 2003", i read this to be separate from the charge in 2000( the one before college).. maybe i'm wrong, which i have no problem admitting or maybe i'm drunk(which i am)... i'm not sure of the outcome of this charge, but he wasn't in college in 2003...

ATLANTA -- Jamal Lewis insists he did not try to help a childhood friend buy cocaine in the summer of 2000 , an accusation that has the Baltimore Ravens running back facing federal drug charges.
Lewis' attorney said a cocaine buy wasn't discussed during a restaurant conversation more than three years ago involving Lewis, a boyhood friend and a woman who turned out to be a police informant.

I'm not going to defend what Lewis did, but his durability and wear and tear issues are what's going to be important here.

Yup.
Basically, we're betting on whether or not Lewis' loss in breakaway speed came from those bone spurs in his foot, or if he really is burnt toast.
I'm an optimist, I hope he's truly healthy.

I think my neighbors dog [censored] on my porch. He MUST be thinking about Peterson....
Well... I've said from the start that Peterson was the most logical pick for the Browns, that we would address our horrid interior before concerning ourselves with tackles, that Droughns wasn't the long term solution and that we wouldn't bring in a speed back to compliment him. So far... we signed Steinbach, brought Lewis in on a 1-year deal (obviously, he's not a long term solution) to, in essence, replace Droughns on the roster, and now we're looking at a RB corps next year of Jerome Harrison... unless, we fill in the blank with a rookie this year. Want to guess who that guy might be?
It's not that I'm stretching to fit everything around the notion of drafting Peterson, it's that I saw it coming ahead of time, have been pimping the Peterson and the thought of drafting him forever (back before he was considered a Top 3 guy or people were talking him up to us), and now I'm just watching the pieces fall into place. I'll give you my logical process for this one though, so you don't think I'm pulling this stuff from my nether regions.
- We signed Lewis to a one-year deal. - Lewis hasn't shown the ability to be a feature back for years - it's obvious we brought him in to split carries with SOMEONE unless we're operating under delusions of '03. - Lewis is a horrible compliment to Droughns, as they're very similar backs (neither can really bust one deep anymore). Doesn't make sense he'd be brought in for a platoon with Reuben. - If we wanted to platoon Lewis with a speed back, why did we only sign him for one year? If he blows up this next year, he may demand a contract beyond our means. If we wanted him for a longer-term platoon, we'd have signed him to multiple years (as I'm sure he wanted them) and locked in his counterpart as well. Doesn't make sense. - If our intention was to use him as a stop-gap to a rookie back next year, why not sign him for two years? As is, his contract will expire as the rookie is entering - in effect, canceling any knowledge/carry split that he'd provide to a rookie (which would be a huge help). Again, it doesn't make sense.
- Then what does make sense? Taking Peterson. We sign Lewis for a one-year deal to teach AD the ropes (more than likely, what NOT to do in hopes of extending his longevity longer than Lewis'). They'll split carries for the year, with Peterson learning and growing accustomed to an NFL workload all year long. When the year is over, Lewis' contract expires (hopefully he raised his value enough to get an offer elsewhere ala Kevin Millwood) and Peterson takes over as the feature back. We bring in a backup (something feasible), get Bentley back, and presto! Of all the options listed above, this one makes by FAR the most sense IMO.
Sure, we could still take Thomas (who I'd have no big problem with btw) or someone else, I just think Peterson makes the most sense by far. I don't know, because I'm not Savage - I can just analyze what I see. Just saying... if Peterson is the man come April - you know I told ya so.

I'm not trying to stir any debate here between the two backs, but over the last two years Droughns had 7 runs a 1 run beyond 20 yards. Over the same two years, Lewis had 3 runs in each of'em for more than 20 yards.
I think both backs suffered from wear and tear as well as playing behind some not-so-great lines.
What's going to surprise some people is the fact that Droughns has 840 carries in his career. Lewis? 1000 more In comparison, guys like Portis and Thomas Jones have about 4-500 less.
I'm not telling anything that people don't allready know when I say that RB's only have so many carries in them. Lewis, at 27, is allready near the end. I don't know if Droughns is going to be the 2nd back or not, but we are going to have to have a 2nd back to pair with Lewis. Peterson is still in play, but so are the other guys available at 3.
Something else to think about. The team could simply cut Droughns and resign him, though I'm trying to envision how two of the same kind of back are going to split carries. I'm not at all comfortable with Wright and Harrison as the other backs. If that were the case, we're simply repeating what we did this year with a back who takes punishment paired with guys who haven't done anything in the league.
Peterson is still in the mix, but we've got plenty of options, which is the best thing for this team. I sure hope someone wants to trade up to get Johnson, so we can drop a spot or two and get Thomas I don't have anything against Peterson except for his durablity issues and have always acknowledged his talent, but you can find good backs all over the place. The Jets got Jones for a swap of 2nd round picks, we got Droughns for some guys who lived down to their reputations, and despite all the ballyhoo of the Benson/Williams/Brown RB class a couple of years ago, those guys haven't made a difference. Addai was at the ass-end of the 1st round, and teams can land FA RB's all the time. I feel like spending the #3 pick on Peterson, while totally understandable, would not be making the best use of it.
So what's changed with this signing as it pertains to the draft? Absolutely nothing. We can still go in numerous directions, including trading down.

You're thought process is focused on that "we must be choosing Peterson because we have Jamal Lewis to share carries with him now so it makes sense" and "we won't have Jamal Lewis next year because we only signed up to a one year deal."
Well first off, Jamal Lewis hasn't proven much over the past 2 seasons so he DOES have something to prove to our club as to whether he can even be THE RB anymore. So the one year deal makes sense for that. Also, we give him this one year deal and it gives him (Jamal Lewis) the ability to prove to this club two things: 1. That he can still play at a high level and isn't hesitant and still has it 2. That he isn't going to get in trouble and has good character.
Next we can address the fact that we only got him for a 1 year deal. Now why is it that if we only signed him to a year long contract that we can't resign him next year? We can, so where's the problem? If he proves to us what we hope he will, then when we draft again next year, and if we're looking RB, we can still resign Jamal to an extension and keep him around to share carries just like you're worried about.
So again, I don't understand the thought process.

Pretty much. I doubt we're going to use similar backs in a platoon, so we're in essence subbing Lewis for Droughns. We could keep Reuben as a FB, but I'm not sure he's worth it at that price.
For the most part, though, this is a lateral move in contract with a talent upgrade.

It was good-natured ribbin'. You've been seeing every move as a sign that Peterson was the guy when Peterson was always one of the options, hehehe. I don't think you had to lay it out to make people see the obviousness of the situation, Lewis, Droughns, or otherwise. Reuben was always supposed to be a split-carries back. We got lucky and he toted the load in '05. He broke down behind a putrid line in '06. We were always going to get another back (or Savage should have been dragged out to a ditch and shot ) so taking Lewis now gives us options.
We do have numerous ways to go. We can:
Draft Peterson Keep Droughns Cut and resign Droughns at a cheaper rate Cut Droughns and go with Wright or take another back in trade or free agency
If I had to make a comment about the position, I'd say Lewis probably brings a little more stability, even though he isn't as versatile. That gives us various ways to go. Does this move with Lewis bring Peterson more into focus? Nah, I don't believe so, but it also doesn't reduce it much either. All it does is give teams who are eye-balling the #3 spot in the draft reason to believe that we may be interested in moving down, which brings on bidders. We don't have to stay and take Peterson now.

Lewis has had "something to prove" ever since he was hurt and went to prison - he hasn't stepped up to the plate. It's very clear that he's declining, and quick. If we had wanted him for multiple years, we would've signed him for multiple years, we would've just put performance incentives in his contract to ensure production. The one-year contract signifies that we understand what Baltimore knows already - that Jamal Lewis isn't a long-term solution. If he's not a long-term solution, that means that SOMEONE needs to be. I just see Peterson as the most logical person to fit that role... but maybe that's just me.

Haha, I know, I just wanted to put all my thoughts into one post. In the end, I'm for whatever makes us a better team - whether that be Peterson, Droughns, Lewis, or whoever. It'll be interesting to see what Savage does with Reuben though, because cutting him could be a clearer indication of things to come

He had his best season since 2003 last year running for over 1000 yards, so maybe he's on the up and up again. Plus he's only 27 and we always still have the option to sign him next year. That's just the case. Maybe we could've done it your way and put in some incentives, but the fact remains that the way we did it, we don't have any obligations to him if he sucks it up THIS year. So the way we did it was the best way for us.

I think it's mainly been mentioned, but it seems to me that Lewis just makes it easier for us to pass on peterson if we want to. Truth is, neither Droughns nor Lewis can probably make it the whole season without injury at this point in their careers. Honestly, Droughns has more upside. They are both basically on one year contracts at this point.
Wright beat out Green and Suggs (not that that means anything) because he's a good all around back and special teamer. Highly unlikely he becomes the feature back. Harrison showed great moves and speed in his limited time, but he can't block yet and is really green. I think, unless we draft peterson, all four make the roster in some way to prepare us for next year to find a feature back.
The smart thing, like toad says, is I think to build the oline some more with Thomas. Both Lewis and Droughns can produce if they get some downhill steam. They get yards after contact. So with an improved Oline, they can carry the running game while taking punishment.

Your parents give you a big ol' pat on the back for being a Browns fans and it feels you with pride knowing that your family and parents approve of your feelings. Me, I'm not so lucky. I have Bronco fans for family and parents. They tease and chide me every chance they get because I CHOOSE to be a Browns fan and I made that choice over a decade ago when I was a little 10 year old boy. I say I am more loyal than those of you who don't have to deal with being chided like I do.
All this because I don't agree with the Jamal Lewis signing?

I am completely ok with this signing. A one-year deal for ok money. 3.5 mil is barely 10% of this year's starting cap room.
Let's hope he's healthy. The fact that the Ravens still offered him money makes me think he won't be too bad this year.
I think this is a good move that allows us to hold our cards close for the draft. That, in and of itself, might be worth its ROI when it comes draft time. If it allows us to move down 1 or 2 spots and a 2nd just to get the guy we are going to draft anyway, it is more than worth the risk.
The question now becomes what happens to Ruben. I am curious about this. I don't think they compliment one another at all except for the fact of depth in case we don't go Peterson's way. If we lose Ruben, it's rather obvious what we are doing.

I believe he is only something like 27yrs old. I never like the guy because he played for the Rats and torched us for big yards everytime we played them. He is now a Brown. He is an upgrade over Reuben. IMHO If it is a 1-year deal as has been stated, he will show what he has left (a Lot after removing the bone spurs) IMO, and be a great compliment to Peterson or Quinn or Russell. He gives us options that will help in many Trade-Down scenarios. I think it is a Wise Move by Phil to get him. JMHO Go Brownies!!!

All possible, but as long as we're all guessing about the future here, my thinking is we don't draft Peterson, we cut or trade Droughns, and end up with Lewis/Wright/Harrison, opening up the way for Quinn, Thomas or Branch. The one year deal tells me Phil may be eyeballing the deep RB class next year. JMHO

Music to my ears. I'm sure Phil has a plan in place and this signing is another piece to his puzzle. As long as that plan incorporates a "rugged offensive line," he's got the benefit of the doubt from me. I don't ever want to be yelling at the TV again because a Browns drive bogged down due to an ineffective OL.

Just clickin' L...
Why does anyone think this would eliminate Peterson???
U never want to go into any draft with holes as wide as Lake Erie...It's a sure giveaway as to who u would target...
If we didn't sign a decent back and let Droughns go Calvin Johnson would have zero value to us trading down with Tampa...It'd be OBVIOUS who we'd take...lol...
3/5/2006: Signed a four-year, $13.2 million contract. Droughns got $2.5 million to sign. 2007: $1.25 million (+ $1.75 million roster bonus), 2008: $1.75 million, 2009: $2.75 million,
There's a couple M missing in there after his 1.2M Base from 2006...He's about a 3.7M hit this year...If we release him prior to June 1...Which would be the case if we don't pay the RB...He's a FA and his hit is 1.87M...
This would be a minimal wash...It actually hits us with about 1M more swapping backs...
Wright is here thru 2008...
We've still got over 20M bucks...Spend another 10M Savage and get Mahan/Robaire and Ian Scott and Hood in here...
LG/RG check CB/CB check OLB check DE/DE check RB check

just got up and read this in my e-mail....Browns sign FA running back and former Raven Jamal Lewis! Most NFL insiders felt Lewis was in Berea more to tick off baltimore, than to sign with Cleveland. Now we'll see more of Lewis then the back of his jersey as he ran over the Browns in past years! Jamal may not have alot left, but enough to give the Browns another weapon for at least another year. His yards per carry average was not good last year compared to most running backs, but he is a workhorse who can still take the football 20+ times if needed a game. His signing is also ironic for the Cleveland Sports scene as it reminds me somewhat of Carlos Boozer. Carlos asked to test the free agent market saying he fully intended to sign with the Cavs. Of course he did - that was on the player! The ravens made Jamal a free agent saying they fully intended to sign him back...it backfired. That was on the team! My opinion, this also gives the Browns another draft day option - Adrian Perterson is now NOT needed. Take Joe Thomas if he is there or trade down! Will post more soon at www.wmms.com. visit munch on sports @wmms.com Ltr. MUNCH

Personally, I kinda think Savage is rolling the dice and figuring he drafts next year for the RB since next years draft has a lot of potential..
So.. it comes down to the LT and the QB or taking the best offer someone gives us.. I doubt we leave the 3 spot.
A very accurate summary of the situation Saint! All people have to do is look at the past few FA signing periods. What Phil addresses in the FA market,he leaves alone in the draft. We can draft in the top 20 next year and STILL get a GREAT RB! It will be a very deep RB class.
So why spend your #3 this year on one? Just doesn't add up now does it? So IMO- It';s down to Thomas.Quinn,or trade down to between 8-10 and go DL. And Saint,I don't really feel we're going to leave the "*star power spot* of #3 either unless somebody gives up the farm to get it.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Just clickin' L...
Why does anyone think this would eliminate Peterson???
Why would you spend a #3 THIS year on a RB with a GREAT class of RB's coming out next year? Just doesn't make sense DnD. If I did the math and could make that make sense? I could see your point. But we can get a GREAT RB next year with a lot less investment. A franchise QB or LT? Not so easy next year ESPECIALLY if we go 6-10 or 8-8.
I think Savage has the common sense to add this up DnD. I know I've looked at this objectively and I can't see an AP at #3 when next year there will be a bumper crop at RB.

He didn't really address the RB situation to the extent that you would if you thought it was set. He added a temporary player. This may be the veteran back that Droughns was going to be prior to Lewis being released from Baltimore. If they pick up AP then Droughns would have been the 2nd of a 2 back system. Now it looks as if Lewis will be that back.

Well... I've said from the start that Peterson was the most logical pick for the Browns,
with all due respect, thats in your eye's he's the most logical pick, To me the most logical pick is Thomas if he's there, The RB crop next year is incredible and there are alot of them, I like Peterson and wont be upset if we grab him, at 3.
I dont have a problem with Lewis past like some on here, If he continued to get in trouble evey year or it there was a continued show of problems than ya I'd see a problem, Hopefully he can tell these young hot heated kids, hey dont do stupied thing like I did, hopefully he can be a role modle, an Lewis might be able to get a couple other FA to sign.
Signing Lewis to me means a couple things, RD is gone, We can spend just his roster bonus 1.5m on a back-up for Lewis, not to mention saving his salary and we signed Wright earlier this year, so Ruben is gone by the 15th, unless we hold onto him for trade, which either case he isnt here come training camp.

They said that about this years crop of tackles. Now we have 2 legitimate first rounders. Anyway who is in this "bumper crop" of RB's? The only people I have heard say this is on this board.

i don't like the move b/c i think he's got nothing to bring to the rungame anymore that Droughns doesn't...but i understand it, given the length...it allows us to more easily pass on Peterson if we so choose...a move that's a tiny cap hit and buys us a little leverage in the draft ain't so bad...just don't see it improving the team in any direct sense... Ok,,, i've had my coffee now and I'm ready to talk about Lewis.. Lots of things are being said,, first off, some don't like this mans criminal history.. Please try to remember he committed his crime while still in college.. he was pretty darn young.. he just didn't get caught until he was already in the NFL.. He went to prison (not for long enough but it is what it is) and according to all that I can find, Paid his debt to society and has stayed clean since.. So do we hold this against him for the rest of his life? Is it fair to do that? He was young and did something extremely wrong and stupid.. I didn't sell drugs in college, but I sure was bitten by the stupid bug many times, Just didn't get caught is all... So maybe we come up off his butt for this and see what he can do on the field. And while we are discussing his ability.. he had a down year last year,, Carried 314 times, (average 19.6 carries a game), ran for over 1100 yards, fumbled I think 3 times (may have been 4) and did it behind a less than stellar Oline.. (they had thier problems last year also,, not as severe as ours but still not as good as they had been) On top of that he had a bone spur which slowed him down a bit.. Have you ever had one of those... wow,, that hurts man,,, they really do. Now,, what to do with Rueban Droughns.. I gotta say a few things about Droughns,,, first off, he's not squeeky clean either.. not as serious as the thing that Lewis did, but still not perfect either. He's been in the league for about that same time as Lewis.... Yet he has only two 1200+ yard seasons, one with a less than good Oline and one with Denver who has an outstanding line.. Last year he was injured as well with that shoulder issue and as a result, ran for only around 700 yards on just over 200 carries and 5 fumbles.. Not good right! My point is this, For all of flaws we can point out about Lewis, he's cleaned himself up and has been more productive, more often than Droughns has ever been,, Simply put, he's an upgrade,,, nothing more, nothing less... Here's how I see this shaking out,, Droughns will be traded,,, for what and to whom, I don't know. Lewis will be our Feature back for ONE YEAR.. after which we may resign him or let him walk. He will be given a break by either Harrison or Wright or an unknown guy that will either be a UDFA or someone we draft in the later rounds.. (your all gonna think I'm nuts here, but I think Lynch drops to the second where we snag him after taking Thomas in the first). If Lewis has a decent year, he becomes our Bettis and whoever we pick up either this year in the later rounds or in the draft in 2008 becomes our feature back,, Someone tell me if this is a bad thing,,, I think it's a good move. Go get'em Phil!

True Clay, very true.. I dont mind this signing.. I think JL has some left in the tank.. I think he just got bored playing with the Ravens.. I say he rips off 1300 this season, and gets us to the playoffs.. I have a gut feeling that drafting AP would be a mistake.. We need linemen, and I say we try to get Gaines Adams...Trade down and get more picks, sort the crap, and win the whole ball of wax, coming from the basement to the party, with Lewis,lol.. I think we are in for some more head-scratching moments in the month to come, so lace up the cleets and buckle the chin-straps dawgs, we're in for a long game... O yeah, 1 more thing, with the Rats haveing Steve Mc, passing the heck out of the ball, there was little room for JL to get his mitts on the ball, which drove his numbers down.. BET
