The problem is that you need multiple QBs versed in the option if you are going to run it full time.

Maybe we can take them to the cleaners again in a trade for Seneca Wallace?

I can see most people's issue with Tebow.

It's actually not Tebow, it's how the media shoves him down your throat.

WOW,, if that's not the dumbest reason to hate someone, I am not sure what is.

Forget debating if he's a good QB or not. Forget debating if you agree with his religion. Forget debating if you think it's right for him to openly show his faith, etc. Tebow is a great person, regardless of his skills on the field. Regardless of his religious views. He's a great person. I choose to root for good people to succeed.

To tell you the truth, I'm no different. he's not a Brown so I don't live or die with his wins and losses.. but I wish him all the best., You are right, he appears to be a good guy..

I don't buy the speed of the NFL deal...it's all in proportion.

Fast players exploit slower players at all levels.

As for the number of qbs who run it, actually, that is a excellent point. It's far easier for teams to find decent qbs who can run it then it is to find a decent back-up in a drop back attack.

If your #1 goes down for some reason, you won't see such a drastic drop off in play.

Absolutely not, corners are too fast. The option is just an attempt to disguise the fact that Tebow can't throw the ball. He needs to be a RB and let's let Brady Quinn take a stab at the starting QB job even though I'm sure he won't be much better.

Tebow has won against mediocre teams. I'll be impressed when he beats the Packers.

There are a large number of players that celebrate their Christianity openly. I think it's just an issue with those that don't like him.

No, it's bigger than that.

The more a player is exposed through the media, the more their statements, opinions, and beliefs are felt by the consumer. As a result, when someone like Tebow gets as much exposure as he's getting right now, his outward show of faith hits people much stronger than from a punter.

Taking this a step further, people in this country feel resentment from those who try and push their faith onto them. So when people are constantly faced with Tebowism and his continued statements about his faith, it's perfectly natural that some percentage of people won't care for it.

To exemplify what I'm talking about, what if he were Muslim?

Yeah, that should have stopped people for a split-second, and everything which goes into that microsecond of instinctual reaction is exactly why it's to be expected that some people won't go out for how aggressively he pimps his faith.

In a predominantly Christian country, his outward show of faith is more easily accepted. If he were a Witch Doctor, the outcry would be much greater. If he were Muslim, the outcry would be much greater. If he were Hindu, the outcry would be greater. Just because we're a Christian-dominant country doesn't mean people are wrong if they don't care for his message.

There's a story I recall from 2010 when Tebow took the Wonderlic test at the combine. Before taking the test, he asked that everyone bow their heads and pray. One player told him to "Shut the **** up."

Case in point.

When someone decides to outwardly and aggressively promote a belief, whether it's religion or a love of pickled carrots, there's going to be some push-back by those who don't like such things. Because of this, I can't be critical of people who aren't on-board with Tebow's aggressive religious stances.

From my own personal perspective, I have great admiration for him. He's a great person who has a very good set core of beliefs. However, I don't care for people who push religion in my face. If I were taking that Wonderlic test and had been asked to pray, I wouldn't have told him to shut the F up. I simply wouldn't have done it. I don't believe that any higher deity answers prayers or intervenes with our daily lives, so to pray would have felt very hypocritical. I also wouldn't have done it just to placate his beliefs.

An example of that happened earlier this year at my hotel. Our POS Director of Sales gave my ballroom to one of his old Banquet Captains for a birthday celebration. He's Muslim. I'd met the guy and had no problem with his birthday group. However, at one point during the function, I was at the front desk sorting out a problem with a guest when I saw 8 men make their way to a back corner of my restaurant, drop down mats, face East, and start to pray. As I approached the group, one guy had obviously been prepared for someone to question what they were doing, and had a rehearsed statement ready for me. He indicated that the USA is a country that guarantees religious freedom to all of it's people, so there shouldn't be a problem with this very public display. My response was that while inside the ballroom, out of the public eye, they could do whatever they wished and I would in-fact protect their freedom to do so had anyone protested. However, out in public, they were not going to be allowed to continue. He replied that they wouldn't be much longer, to which I replied "No, you're done now. I'm not offended by your beliefs, but this hotel is neutral, and NO religious expressions by a group are going to be made in public where others will be affected by them." I was then thanked by a frequent guest who stated she felt uncomfortable by their public religious beliefs.

So the problems with some aren't that they "hate Tebow." The problem is that any person who outwardly tries to pedal their beliefs onto others will eventually get some resistance. Tebow must shoulder this if he's going to continue to do as he does.

As for Tebow the football player, well, that's a different debate.

As usual Toadie, you're comparing apples & oranges but doing it in a wordy way.

I don't think you're going to find anyone caring if a Muslim football player let his Muslim faith be known.

What people do get upset about is if someone is preachy about their faith (which Tebow isn't, nor was Kurt Warner nor Deion Sanders nor Reggie White) or prescribe to wearing cultural garb to separate themselves from society. Wearing a burka isn't required by Islam, in general, only by fanatical outliers. Yarmulkes aren't required by Jews, except on some occasions.

I don't think any sane person would be offended if Muslims wore a crescent & star, as many Jews wear the Star of David, or Christians wear crosses or Confucians wear yin & yang jewelry.

Now, I won't argue the point with you about your job. It's not something I know about and won't speak to, but you're supposed to be hospitable in the hospitality industry, aren't you?

You are thinking in terms of today.

If you run this type of system, you starting looking for a back-up who can run it...you'd have all sorts of guys to select.

How many back-ups in the NFL today could provide 'decent' service in a drop back system vs. those who could be 'decent' in an option offense?

Btw....I think the Broncos actually have a good backup to run the spread option.

Brady Quinn.

I'm serious. The guy is an athlete.

Big - check
Strong - check
Fast - yes actually he does have some wheels
Can he throw the football. Yep.

Actually, with what you did to the muslims - consider yourself lucky you didn't get fired. See, in the U.S. we DO have freedom of religion. (religions other than Christianity seem to get more freedom, but that's a different discussion)

I'm actually surprised they didn't file a lawsuit against you, if what you said is 100% exactly as it happened.

We have VERY strict policies regarding what can and can't be conducted in public spaces. If a preacher decides to take to the corner of our lobby and conduct a sermon, he cannot be permitted to continue.

What guests do in the privacy of their sleeping or meeting rooms is their business, as long as it doesn't break any laws. What they do in the public spaces, however, is very different.

Anarchy, we have to be hospitable to everyone, so long as it doesn't interfere with the rights and privacy of everyone else.

People get tired of Tebow because he's very aggressive about his faith. Some find that offensive, which isn't necessarily wrong. That isn't the same as hating his beliefs just because they hate Tebow.

You can't run the option at this level. The corners are too fast. The Dolphins ran the wildcat, we see how well they do in the post-season. Zilch.
The option is an attempt to disguise Tebow's inability to throw the football. Soon enough, he's gonna get SMACKED.
Browns stand no shot with this offense and Holmgren wouldn't have it.

The Broncos apparently don't feel the option offense is a long term answer ... as Elway throws all his QB's (Tebow, BQ, and Orton) down the stairs. Following is from PFT:

Elway: Broncos are no closer to finding quarterback of future

by Gregg Rosenthal
November 21, 2011

AP Tebowmania has taken over the greater Denver area, just not the Broncos front office.

Broncos executive vice president of football operations John Elway continues to be lukewarm about Tim Tebow’s future as the starting quarterback of the Broncos.

Gary Miller asked Elway the following question on his weekly radio show on 102.3 FM, via the Denver Post.

“Any closer to feeling if you have your quarterback on this team?”

Elway flatly answered “no.”

“I think obviously [Tebow is] making progress week in and week out. When you look at our third down numbers, those have to improve. I mean, that’s the bottom line,” Elway said. “We can’t go 3-for-13 [on third downs] and win a world championship. Those are the type of things we have to keep improving.”

Sure, this is tough love. But it’s not the type of tough love we’d see if Elway had drafted his own quarterback in the first round that fits Elway’s image of what a franchise quarterback should be.

Elway did praise Tebow’s ability to work late game magic, saying he wasn’t surprised Tebow could make plays in tough situations.

Still, it’s clear that Tebow has a lot of work to do to convince his bosses that he should be the team’s starter next year. Tebowmaniacs point to the media for unfair criticism of their hero.

But it’s clear that some of the biggest doubts regarding Tebow’s long-term viability reside at Broncos headquarters.

If they keep running the offense they're running, they'd be better off drafting Shoelace IMO. Griffin can really wing the ball. I've only seen parts of 3 or 4 Baylor games this year (always flipping back and forth) but his throws, even the deep ones, seem effotless. *edit* he also doesn't have the solid frame that Tebow or Shoelace (or Cribbs;) )

He's not a fiery guy from what I see. He looks bummed when a penalty is called, but never angry. He acts like he was supposed to do what he did when he does something good. Kind of reminds me of Jay Cutler that way.

They've beaten...

Winless Miami..
Got Destroyed by Detroit..
Oakland without McFadden..
KC without anyone..
The Jets with Sanchize...
And the Anti-Phillip Rivers Chargers...

I'm not saying they suck, but thank their ridiculous defense for holding all of those teams down...

What I like about these stretch of games is that they're finding out how to win as a team . Whether it be McGahee doing his thing, Tebow being tebow, or their defense doing what they need to do, they're finding a way to win. I hope Tebow and the rest of the broncos prove to the NFL they're worth the wins they've amounted.

I think people are just wondering whether or not it is sustainable.

People aren't dumb. It's a nice story. They are on a streak. But it still seems way too gimmicky. Most of the time those things don't work long term.

It can work if the Donks defense holds up.

They have scored 18, 10, 38, 17, 17, and 16 points with this offense in place. They are 5-1.

Prior to that, they scored 20, 24, 14, 23, and 24, (with Orton) and went 1-4.

I would assume that it is much like a defensive team that plays its cards close to the vest, limits mistakes, and let's the defense win games for them. That's a tried and true philosophy .... until they go up against an elite QB or 2. Then it often gets messy.

....I'd say when 9 of 18 for 143 yards constitutes a good passing day, and the QB rushes 22 times for 67 yards.

'Peen, you're a good egg, and I don't want this coming off as me rubbing your face in anything because that's not the case. I also want to be VERY clear when I say this isn't about Tebow, which is what the topic was in the "other games" thread. So having made that distinction, until the Donks do it against some real teams and do it without doing it very ugly, nobody is going to buy into this because it flies in the face of everything that the NFL is: A passing league.

This really is the same thing as we used to debate about when Couch was back there making dumb plays: He only got comeback wins because he put the team into those positions to begin with. Well, the option has only won games in the last few minutes because the offense has been so bad they haven't been able to put people away.

Remember, the topic of this thread isn't "Can with Donks win with Tebow at QB?" nor is it "Can the Donks win while running the spread option?"

The thread is "Can the offense be successful running the option?"

In one game? Sure. In several games against bad teams? Perhaps. The team has won several of these games in spite of the offense, not because of it. So until this offense proves it can sustain success long-term, and because there is no historical data in the modern era of football to back it up, you're going to have a hard time convincing anyone that it can. This isn't much different than all the wildcat stuff that went on for a couple of years. That had some limited success, but long-term sustained success? Nope, it failed, and now it's gone.

So where does that leave the spread option? With more questions than answers.

It's a great story right now, but it's been a perfect storm for the Donks to reach this point. If they are going to win with it, they are going to have to get MUCH better at it, because it's exceedingly dicey at best right now. There are just too many unanswered questions, such as how can an NFL QB continue to take this kind of punishment and do it for 16 games? How are they going to react when defenses catch up to it? How will they acquire free agent receivers when they won't be the focus? How will they draft players for the system? How can the team come back when they are down quite a bit without an advanced passing scheme?

Until I see several examples of this offense beating good teams on a consistent basis, I'm a severe doubter. Not a slight one, a strong one. I simply don't believe that in a passing league, you can have a spread option offense. The tough part is that those who support it have to face an uphill stance of "prove it" before you'll get people to believe. Sorry man, but that's the way of things.

The record does not show that I am wrong.

By that logic, in 2008 the Miami Dolphins proved that the Wildcat was a viable NFL system when they used it as a primary offense to win 6 of 8 games, right?

How's the Wildcat doing in Miami these days? Or the NFL for that matter?

The Broncos have won, what, 4 games with this system? All of them close games against struggling teams.

That proves nada. If they win a playoff game with it, then we can talk.

Once you hit the playoffs, you're dealing with stout D's and powerful O's.
