Figured he would be. Too bad though, I really liked Ruben. I hope he is successful somewhere else. Good luck Ruben and thanks for the 1,000+ yard season

Doubt it. I think signing Jamal Lewis says we are going to hold off on a running back until next years draft when the draft is going to be deep with running backs, and we are going to use this years pick to fill another need. Most likely QB.

the Browns will release only if they cant find a trade partner but with the 2 back system being so successful it shouldnt be to hard to move him for a 4th rounder.

There are some good prospects in this draft. Irons, Leonard, Bush, Hunt, Pittman, Henry and the two name guys Peterson and Lynch. A couple of those guys, should be available in the 3rd if Phil wants to go that way.

I think Phil is gonna be burning the batteries up in his phones, leading up to the draft . Thomas or Tradedown is what I'd like to see. Pretty deep draft for most our immediate needs IMO.

This means nothing other than Droughns temporarily doesn't have a job..

This probably means we are making space for Jamal Lewis to be our featured back....with that being the case I highly doubt we draft Peterson unless Thomas and Quinn are already gone...

I agree, there's no point in having Droughns if we're going to primarily be running Lewis and Droughns certainly doesn't fit the bill as a change of pace back. There's just no point in keeping him as much as I enjoyed seeing him run in 2005. I like the guy and hope he can go somewhere where his bruising, pounding running style is effective.

Wow, if you asked me whether or not this would happen a year ago, I'd be shocked, although he's had his share of strikes since he's been here whatnot with the holdout, the near DUI, and the spousal abuse.

I do think that Droughns would do well in a system like Green Bay. They do need someone to protect Favre during the pass plays.

Wow, but that would make a lot of sense. I wonder how successful he'll be. The Packers invested in a lot of O-Line and they had a year to gel so Droughns could be pretty successful there.

Who have they invested in, OL wise? I'm just curious.

No way we get a fourth rounder for Droughns. No team is going to pick up his contract when they can get him much cheaper in a few days. Bad line or not, he is coming off a sub par year which he was also injured. He is a good guy and I think he still can produce. Hopefully he will get that chance.

What if we throw in Andrew Hoffman?

I completely agree. One report said there are three teams talking to the Browns about him. Ok, so let's take that at face value. Why send a 4th rounder when you can offer him the same money and land him in a week or two? It's not as though they are releasing Edge James.

Something later than a 4th, maybe, but it still seems unlikely.

He is talking about last year. They picked up since last year;

Bourke, Josh
Coston, Junius
Leffew, Travis
Colledge, Daryn
Moll, Tony
Palmer, Tony
Spitz, Jason

Colledge is their starting left guard, Spitz their starting right guard, Moll their primary backup on the right side.

Bite your tongue!

This team can't survive without Hoffman. Give them Ken Dorsey.

I would be salivating if anyone offers us a 4th rd pick for reuben. he's not going to be expensive, so why would anybody offer us a draft pick is beyond me.

Gotta love how Schefter has an opinion and puts it out as news. He mentioned this on total access. But it wasn't mentioned as them actualy being interested.

Thanks for the help. I made that statement then went into the Draft board, then starting watching some Discovery Channel special on the 300 movie and totally didn't come back to go into more detail on my statement.

I fully expect the Browns to release Droughns, no team would be stupid enough to offer us something when they know we will be releasing him anyway!(unless Detroit are interested ). IMO another good move by Savage as I see Lewis as an upgrade over Droughns.

I see this as another step in the direction of taking Thomas at 3, if Thomas is already gone then a trade down seems the logical step and could still see us taking Peterson.

Actually, I don't think that's what it means at all,,, in fact, I think it means either Joe Thomas or Brady Quinn....

With Lewis as a one year guy that could be extended if he does well, and what is supposed to be a much better RB draft class in 2008, I think it means that Savage goes for a QB or, and I think this is a safer bet,, LT like Thomas...

My guess,,,THOMAS

If we have the cap room, why not keep RD as insurance in case Lewis gets hurt?

Because from a GM's perspective he's overpaid. Hopefully once RD has tested the market and knows what his fair-value is, Phil will make an effort to resign him.

The lesson learned last year with Faine was a painful one. Phil better not make the same mistake again.

As I explained on the other Droughns thread, a trade isn't out of the question. Green Bay has expressed interest. More then likely there are a few other teams.

If a team is up against the cap and has just enough money to take Droughns on, then a trade might be the best or only way to secure his services. They might not be in a position to start bidding with other teams who have a boat load of money.

All teams are under fan pressure to make some moves in FA...I still think we could get something for the guy.

The idea of a 4th rounder isn't real...a 7th rounder....maybe a conditional 6th is the best we can hope for at this point.

Look for any trade partner to be a team with low cap space.

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

Valid point Peen but .....

Presumably Droughns would get a say in whether he wanted to join the potential trade team? if so? why would he? when logically he could get more money for himself if he gets cut?

Droughns will want the best for himself. That will mean getting cut by the Browns and playing teams off against eachother for his benefit not ours.

That's the heart of it. The money.

If RD gets cut and has to renegotiate he may actually get less money. Some would argue that he's overpaid in 2007 compared to other RB's. Taking a trade may actually protect RD finacially.

Someone else said it on another Droughns or McGahee or Lewis thread,,

But what really makes a ton of sense is for Buffalo to give up a 3rd or 4th rounder to us to get Droughns...

He's not a bad back, he can run in foul weather, he's a hard worker and he's NOT a cap killer... To me, that's perfect,, and to boot, Buffalo has a few extra picks because of the McGahee trade..

I wish I'd have thought of it first, but someone else did..

While ALSO protecting the team trading for him from getting into a bidding war that makes someone overpay for him.

Not a surprise if it happens, but that doesn't mean we have to like it. I like Droughns and I really hope he catches on somewhere and kicks some butt (except against us). Plus, my wife has a Droughns jersey. Before, she had a Suggs jersey. Anyone else we should get rid of? I'll have my wife get their jersey and they're as good as gone!

Droughns is still a serviceable back...

If I was the team interested in him I'd TRADE for him and take on the remaining 3 years of his CURRENT Contract...Why???

At 1.25 and 1.5M over the next 2 years that's a BARGAIN even for a Split time back...

There's teams interested...THREE that I've heard...GB/Buffalo/Tennessee...

His 2007 salary ain't much more than his stature Vet Minimum...I guarantee ya' that if he hits the FA Market by us releasing him he'll get a decent sized Signing Bonus...Might only be a couple million over 2 years...But figure it out...The Cap Hit will be MORE than the 1.25M Base the team that trades for em' will inherit...

This might be INSANE...But I'd almost consider GIVING him the 1.75M Roster Bonus just to keep him and use him as a trade up option much like Faine last year...1.75M is chump change to Lerner...Or even try to get a 5th for him and use THAT to move up in round 2ish area...

To ME it's every bit worth the money and the increased cap hit to use him or the pick we get from trading him to move up in round 2 and MAKE SURE we secure a Sears or Blalock...

I need to read that again...lol...

It was fun while it ;asted Rueben.

If this were the Browns 3 years ago we would keep you, and let you rot on our bench.

Far from being insane that makes alot of sense!

The only way I see him being traded is IF we pay the roster bonus. Droughn's knows there are a number of teams looking for a RB - Buffalo, Titans, GB, Giants and arguably some others! he will use this to his advantage. Although his production dropped off, his salary is relatively small in the wider scope of the increased salary cap.

Droughns holds all of the cards in this situation. If I was in his position I would not be interested in a trade BEFORE the roster bonus is due. It may be Droughn's last pay day and he should make the most of it.

Gary Baxter, then maybe we can reach a settlement instead of hanging on to him to see if he can make "history".

lol, that's why I have a personalized one (the wife got it for me for Christmas a couple years ago).

I think we may have to get her a personalized one or maybe a Sipe or Kosar or Newsome, or something like that.
