http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d82...than-his-brownsAfter he was fired by the Cleveland Browns and sat out the 2009 season to recover from hip-replacement surgery, Romeo Crennel wasn't sure another head-coaching opportunity would come along. Now he's in command of the Kansas City Chiefs and feeling more prepared than before to take on the role. "I think that the talent base here is a better talent base than we had in Cleveland when I first got there, because when I first got there, I think the (first-round) draft choices from the last two or three years were not even on the team," Crennel told Cleveland Browns Daily on Tuesday. "And when you talk about having a nucleus and building a nucleus of the team, you try to build it through the draft. Your draft picks are the guys that you want to be around for a while, and we didn't have any. (Not news to the city of Cleveland.) "We had to kind of piecemeal and go into free agency and grab guys here and there and then try and get some guys in the draft," Crennel said. "And we really didn't have a quarterback, and this league is a quarterback league and you gotta have one of those. ... There were a lot of things that we had to work through to try to build that program. "... This time around, because of the experience I had in Cleveland, I think I can better handle the things that will come at me as a head coach." Good news for the Chiefs, but for the Browns, it's another case of a coach learning on the job before moving on to success elsewhere. Before Crennel, there was Bill Belichick, whose icy relationship with the Cleveland media during his tenure is well-documented. Three Super Bowls appeared to cheer him up some in New England.

Tough to argue with a single point that he made.
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

Everybody learns from experience.
The cook doesn't have to shop for the ingredients, but he sure as heck better be able to reject them.
Here, Romeo didn't have roster control. As I remember, Savage had that control.

And we didn't have a very good Coach or staff either...Under Romeo's watch we went 24-40 including two 4-12 seasons and a 6-10 season. They drafted their so called franchise QB and auctioned off their 2008 draft. What did he do to make this team better? He had A Franchise Left Tackle, 1st round WR and TE, 1st round DE, DQ, and they drafted Quinn. Dilfer was the QB of choice when he got here and a first round selection. His biggest mistake was letting certain guys do whatever they wanted..He had no respect. Romeo's time here in Starters and drafts, not counting the coin flip.

Good luck, Romeo. You failed here. You've made your excuse for why. You have now stated you have more talent in KC. You better be able to back it up.
I'm not betting on you.

well, he does have more talent in KC and they play in an easier division (even with Peyton). I'd say he does better than 24-40 overall, but not sure that means he's a success there either

First of all Clevesteve the part I read says " talent base better than the Browns when I first got there " So it's not as shocking a statement as the title of this thread. It's not as much of a put down of the Browns today.
2nd of all, What's he supposed to say He's in KC now. 3rd of all, Matt Cassell swings the pendulum about 20 degrees by himself.
Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

Crennel: Chiefs' talent base 'better' than his Browns
Thanks Captain Obvious...
The Browns were 6-10 the year before he got here, the Chiefs were 10-6 and in the playoffs the year before he started...
So in his first year here he went backwards to 4-12, shot up to 10-6.. then back to 4-12... We're trying to build a football team, not a roller coaster.

That 2008 team was snakebitten by injuries from the get-go and still were two defensive meltdowns away from being 6-4, at which point we started losing QBs to season-ending injuries at a rate of about one per game.

I saw Travis Wilson third round pick on that list, and couldn't help but laughing. "i'm the best WR in the draft"....... I just shake my head once again.....
Biggest problem with Romeo was his clock management. Guy was just confused from the get go. For KC's sake, i hope he figured it out. Or just get used to looking at a flabbergasted expression every other week as precious seconds tick off the clock.

Nothing mentioned about Country Club Crennel? I imagine KC will be one of the most penalized teams next year.

Not to nitpick, but it was the other way around. He took a team that was 4-12 to 6-10 in 2005. For some reason completely unbeknownst to me in 2006 he regressed to 4-12. The next year we had the breakout 10-6 just to fall back to 4-12 the year after that.
I think he has more of a chance to succeed this time since someone like Pioli should be on the same page as him unlike Savage. However, there were plenty of times when Romeo did stuff that made me go "HUH!?!?!?"
Hopefully he's learned because I do like him as a person. I would like to see him succeed unless it's against us.

Thats as much a shot at the GM's that were there before Crennel got there as it was at Savage when you think about it.
Didn't RAC inherit KW and what was our centers name that was a first round pick?.. damn,, escapes me at the moment.. But that's it. Thats all he had from the previous first rounds picks..

Yes, we invested a 3rd round pick at center in 2002 (Melvin Fowler), a first round pick in 2003 (Jeff Faine) and another first round pick in 2009 (Alex Mack)... all in the center position... and people wonder why we have had trouble building a team..
I bet most teams don't invest more than 1 mid to high round pick in that position more than once every 7 or 8 years.. and we have 3 in 8 years... Thats the opportunity cost of having to leave other positions go untouched when you have to keep drafting the same position over and over and over again.

yeah, all those high draft picks, the high-profile FA signing and we still ended up starting a guy the Eagles were going to cut at center for a year

Man, It always cracks me up how Brown's Fans want to heap the blame on Romeo but give Phil Savage a break. Please, I wonder what the wonder kid Phil is doing now.. thats right, he is bagging groceries at the Piggly Wiggly. Romeo had to deal with a GM who was undermining him all the time AND who could not pick talent! Then crap talent kept getting hurt.** please remember the amount of players we had on I/R those years **. When he tried to discipline the problem children( Edwards and Easy Rider Winslow), it was Savage who the kids ran too!.. Then to top it off, you have an assistant coach trying to take your job.. BTW. where is Todd Grantham?? Oh yea, he was so good, he is coaching college kids now!..
Romeo will do better automatically based on experience and having a decent GM!

I wonder if it was Savage's research that convinced the Eagles' Brass into swapping first round picks plus giving Denver 2 mid round picks in order to move up and select Michigan's Brandon Graham in round 1.

I am not so sure that he didnt have ANY roster control (e.g. Willie McG and Big Ted) but he certainly didnt have control of his own time outs.
I wish RAC well but to make excuses for him is irresponsible.
