updating the "make life easy on the Heat" East playoffs for the Josh Smith knee injury last night.

Shumpert, Lin, Amare - out for the Knicks (Chandler battling flu)
Rose - out for the Bulls
Horford, Josh Smith - out for the Hawks
Rondo and Ray Allen - out for the Celtics (both will be back at some point)
Dwight Howard - out for the Magic

Lebron's manhood - out for the Heat (at least when it matters)

They're taking the East, it's just inevitable. I think Boston, should they get to the ECF, has a fighting chance. They should have never traded Perk.

I think OKC and Miami would be a pickem, I think Lakers and Miami would have Miami slight edge. Same goes for San Antonio, I think oddsmakers would have the Heat a very slight edge over the Spurs.

I know some of you guys want Miami to fail and that's totally cool and totally understandable, but I just don't care anymore. I just want to see some good basketball, and even if Lebron did get his ring, it doesn't mean anything other than he's gonna have some people off his back.

Just thinking though, if he does make the finals, which I think we all agree they will, if he doesn't get it? Man, lock and load.

I agree with the actual odds on those teams, but I think Vegas would have Lakers as a pick'em, Thunder/Spurs as slight underdogs just because of the betting power behind those teams.

Could be, Lakers are gigantic public favorite, maybe only the yankees are bigger.

If I were setting the lines, I'd still have Miami a slight favorite to win the series, maybe -120 with the Lakers +130

I like this Spurs team. I just worry about how they match up with Miami. Spurs don't have the athleticism or energy to keep up with their starting 5. San Antonio is smarter though and their shooters can help them when Miami goes on runs.

You forgot to mention that Pop would own Spoelstra.

You know damn well if it came down to Spurs/Heat, Pop would do everything in his power to keep those games in the 70-80's. Giant emphasis on transition defense. He'll make them get everything in the halfcourt, and for as good as Miami is, they'd be miserable.

Miami has great defense also. It'd be a very low scoring affair.

100% agree, but the last thing Erik Spoelstra wants is to get into a chess match with Greg Popovich. I think they'd rather have an up and down kinda game.

Man, Chicago looked like they gave up last night.

I heard all season how great that team was without Rose. And how Tibs should have been coach of the year to deal with Rose being in and out of the lineup (and still finishing with the best record in the East).

But now with Rose out, it seems like they're getting a pass for mailing it in last night.

I thought they were supposed to be just as good without Rose......remember them beating up the Heat a few weeks back?

Sometimes it takes a team a moment to recover from the emotional blow, and the 76ers may have gotten a spiritual lift all the sudden for the same reason. And the 76ers aren't a bad team. They can get hot. In the end, thought, the Bulls aren't that great without Rose, and even with him I didn't see them beating the Heat.

Pop would school Spoelstra. If the series became a chess match Miami is screwed. It would be like Dallas last year. Rick Carlisle did a master piece of coaching with his bench and drawing up plays. I have no doubt Pop would be even more effective. However if it becomes a game of checkers and Miami uses their athleticism they will win. Miami has ridiculous speed and athleticism that lets them get away with a lot of things.

Pop would need to use his bench a lot. Tell Tony to play smart and not turn it over. Most importantly don't let Timmy run around chasing Bosh.

That entire series last year, once Dallas overcame that game 2 defecit, it seemed like Miami was always 2 or 3 moves behind. Carlisle is so underrated as a coach. Thought he got a raw deal in Indy, although it worked out well for him.

As far as the Bulls go, I think Thibs is an excellent coach, but that team is a regular season team. A lot of those players fed off other teams giving up. The bad teams in the NBA this year were REALLY bad.

I like Derrick Rose a lot, but I don't think with him on the team they would have beaten Miami. He''s not a closer. They need another guy. I mean if he can get to the rim? that's one thing, but I don't want him hoisting jumpers inside 5 minutes of a close game.

Carlisle will get his due respect soon. He's solid in a lot of areas that HOF coaches excelled at. Phil Jackson is the best ever at getting players personalities to mesh together. I feel Larry Brown is the best ever at maximizing the talent he has. Popovich is the best "chess player" he always gets the right guys to do the right things at the right time. Not saying Carlisle does all of that, but he has a healthy mix of it.

another coach that would give them troubles? Lionel Hollins. And Memphis has the bigs, the PG, the wing-defenders to give the Heat everything they can handle.

of course, I'm not confident they can navigate the West, but that's my favorite 2nd round matchup (Spurs v. Grizz - again)

Some people still think OKC is too young and inexperienced to beat Miami, what's that make Memphis?

Am I the only one that pronounces hyperbole "Hyper-bowl" instead of "hy-per-bo-le"?

I could see them stealing a game or 2 from Miami...

I could also see them self destructing horribly and getting swept...

I was really hoping Miami wouldn't even make the Finals this year, just progressively every year losing a round earlier... As the pressure builds and builds...

But I digress...

Unfortunately beating the Heat is an incredibly difficult thing to do. Wade and Lebron let their role players get away with things and take chances. It leads to turnovers and you all know what happens on fast breaks. Your role players have to make Miamis role players suffer for gambling.

I find it slightly funny that Miami is talked about as thei great defensive team, because they basically get a lot of their transitional scores off of them NOT playing defense. (leaving their man early, not staying in for rebounds etc.)

A team like the Spurs (veteran type) would do well because they won't beat themselves by turning the ball over, which is how Miami gets their game going...

Plus I'd love to see Timmy D get another ring, and yet continue to go unrecognized as one of the best players ever...

Miami doesn't play that good of team defense. They just have a bunch of super freaks that constantly attack you. They gamble way too much.

When they want to, they can be very good, problem is they don't have a good halfcourt offense to feed that. Once you get into crucial situations, they really fold in the halfcourt, and teams can get out and run on them just like they want to do.

Maybe it's me but I feel it's harder to score against a super athletic team in half court because of the small amount of space you have to get off a shot. It is easier to get off shots when guys are rushed.

I can see that, but the problem is that when things are moving fast, it's harder to account or where those super-athletes are at any one time. That allows them to gamble more and use their athleticism to their full advantage.

In the halfcourt, if you have a good PG (or distributor), then you can make them pay if they cheat too much.

San Antonio is so good at that too. When you double up guys, they have so many options. There always seems to be 2-3 good outside shooters on the floor, Parker with the ball who can get to the rim, and a HOF center. When they are D'ing you up, it just seems like it's inevitable that they will get theirs in the halfcourt and then run when you break down in your offense. It's really good basketball, and if they had New York or Boston or Chicago on their jersey instead of San Antonio, you'd be sick of hearing about them because ESPN would force feed you them 24 hours a day.

and they get the scraps from other teams to fill those roles.
